And just 'cause you train with him, you gain a couple of years on your look? :P
Why are Coby/Helmeppo so underrated?

The timeline has always been blurry on OP. It might be 2 months. But it could be 2 years :/
-
Yes it is far fetched to assume that, and its fucking retarded that Coby can use Soru but Luffy needs gear 2 for it.
-
Well, the Strawhats, all except Zorro, only trained their skills in battle, never with actual "training". And they didn't even battle continously but had larger gaps between their fights.
On the other hand Helmeppo and Coby probably spent most of the time with actually training - under the command of one of the marine's strongest vice-admirals Oo; So it's more than possible that they've reached a level that is not sooo much behind the Strawhats.
-
assuming Luffy was trained by Garp for years on end, Coby and Helmeppo are much stronger than Luffy was at the beginning of the series in just a few months(after garp's training)…i think that's ridiculous.
It means Coby and Helmeppo are more capable fighters than Luffy and I don't like that idea. Coby knowing one of the six forms...WTF? that's too much of a powerup; if he was an elite captain level i'd be satisfied.

@Skull Kid : Luffy does not need gear 2 to do Soru, gear 2 raised his attack speed, as in how fast his punches are etc. When he met CP9 he copied the way they hit their feet into the ground (soru) so that in gear 2 he would move fast, as he attacked fast In the end its an assmiliation of the two (This was all explained in the blueno fight.). He could still do it without gear 2, and he would move really fast from one point to another, but his attacks would be slow like normal.

Nah, that's just how Shonen works. Like RPGs. You fight frickin strong boss-monsters with crazy skills and (almost) die all the time. But once you defeated them, leveled up, got new weapons and skills, the whole game will adjust to your new strength: The normal standard-mobs are suddenly as hard as the boss-monsters from before were and the upcoming boss-monsters will be even stronger.
It's just like that - It doesn't really have to make sense XDD

Why are Coby/Helmeppo so underrated?"
To answer this original question honestly, its because Oda made them as humurous side characters and its way too late to try and change them now. No one wants to see Coby and Helmeppo be able to put up a fight against the SHs or use Soru. It turns the strength system and CP9 into a freaking joke, even if Roger himself had trained them.

We know Chopper uses steroids though. How long do you think its been since Zoro joined the crew anyway?

@Rollo:
That's directly from the Spoiler thread in Battle Franky's post.
**THANKS A LOT!
there's a fuckin reason I don't go into the spoiler threads. the effectiveness of this week's chapter has just gone down.**

Rollo T – that's one warning for talking of spoilers outside of the spoiler thread. Do not effing do that.

Going by classic shonen logics, former weaklings being trained by powerful, important characters greatly improve (see Piccolo/San Gohan). Now, of course I don't expect them to be anywhere near the top 3 Strawhats, or Franky and Robin. I can see Helmeppo trying to get his revenge against Luffy only to get comically slaughtered off screen like Usopp at Alabasta against the Kung Fu Dugong.
Gohan was strong from the beginning; even Raditz said that boy's stronger than him, he's just not trained for battle. Besides, even after Piccolo trained him, he was still somewhat weakling because he can't do nothing against Nappa…
Your prediction for Helmeppo is cool :D Love to see his arse kicked again. And even though I'd hate to see them compete with SH level, we just don't know what kind of... "journey" they had all these time in Garp's command, so yeah, at least OP don't just throw away old characters.

I really enjoy Helmeppo's improvement over Koby. (Nobody whine about how I spell Koby with a K instead of a C)
Helmeppo was a spoiled brat of a tyrant, who literally lost everything. Unlike Koby his desire isn't for justice, but rather to redeem himself and restore his privilaged position. Through all he's more developed, making a change for the better. Though he'll probably always be a rank behind Koby due to his attitude, he has improved his character from being a spoiled wimp to a person devoted to his desire.
Koby will always be a dork. He's always been the same character since the start and will probably never develop into anyone differently. Sure he can become crazy powerful since he's being trained under Garp, but otherwise he's still a dweeb.
I'm glad that characters that haven't been seen for 400 episodes (by technicality 300ish, due to their cover story). Finally returned to the scene.
Gin better show up again!

HYPOTHETICAL:
If Coby came back as some sort of uber powerful guy, around the level of Chopper and was a bishie, what would you do and think?
What would you guys do if he gained Chopper-level strength but was not a bishie?
Discuss.

Actually, I think that's anime filler information. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the manga ministory even touched Helmeppo's goals in life. For all we know, Coby's enthusiasm could just be rubbing off on him, or he might want revenge on his father.
