When is the watch party going to be again
Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)

The 24th, 8pm CT. Basically the idea is they're watching 969 and 970, and right after it ends 971 will come out.
-
As much as I love the Oden flashback back in the sub right now, i’m really not looking forward to Rogers extremely hokey pirate-accented dub voice. I just re-listened to his voice in stampede and I am super unimpressed.
-
We've went over this before but I think it fits. Oda has a thing of only ever giving each stereotypical pirate thing to one character, I think Roger being the pirate that sounds like a stereotypical pirate to falls in line with that quite nicely. Even beyond the pirate accent thing, something about his voice in particular just gells with me. Like the similar pirate accent and odex and the deeper booming voice of 4kids doesnt work for me, the funi one is the only one that quite fits his face to me. I will say that the man is clearly getting old though, he was clearly struggling in stampede. Same goes for his current seiyuu actually.
-
It's wild that his current seiyuu, who replaced the original due to his death a couple years ago, is 77. I hope he gets to make it to the end.
-
Imo they should've gotten the guy who's the current voice for Dr. Eggman to voice Roger; he sounds more like Chikao Ohtsuka than Roger's current seiyuu does.

For a second there I thought you were talking about the dub and got
lined up. -
Any gamblers on whether we get news today?
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Best case Scenario is that they announce it for this coming Tuesday. But may 4th is more likely, whether they announce it or not.
-
It’s possible, it’s just hard to say since the event itself is based around the original, and it’s hard to get a gauge on what the schedule will be like going forward. I’ll try not to get my expectations too high, either way it should be a fun event. Dreading the use of the Japanese friend word again though lol.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Alright that was quick. Voyage 6 is on digital on may 4th and funi on the 25th
-
Nicee so glad it's coming so soon I can't wait to binge these lol
-
Pretty fun stream, the interviews were interesting and it was really cool to see rogersbase participate in an official event like that. Obviously though its overshadowed to me personally by the announcement lol, only a little over a week until we get one of my favorite back stories! Really curious how it'll sound, and it marks both 700 dub episodes and the 2/3 point of dressrosa. Really happy with it all.
Oh and btw, they teased that funi specifically will be doing something special for the 1000 episode mark? Super curious about that
-
I remember being so worried when the dub would reach Dressrosa giving how long this arc is but man being only two voyages away from completion in half a year is very awesome.
-
Sorry if Im being too technical or whatever, but just in case just so you know we should have 3 more voyages, at 9.
-
The last voyage is wrap-up and set-up. That’ll be a fun one. I hope they get someone notable for Kaido.
I’m very excited we’re getting the set soon! I’ve been rationing super hard so that when we get to the flashback, we can binge it. I’m also stoked that the full flashback is all on this one set. Would’ve sucked to stop in the middle.
Curious what their episode 1000 surprise is. I’m forever praying for a simuldub, but I doubt it’s that. It’s weird that they’d drum up excitement this far in advance. Episode 1000 isn’t for 29 weeks, like 7-8 months.
-
700 episodes is a really exciting milestone, it still feels like we just reached 600. For some reason 7 feels like such a larger jump from 6 than say 6 from 5. Like now we're in the big boy numbers lol.
I agree though, didn't really think about it cuz it feels like we're so close to episode 1000. Really makes me wonder how major it is.
-
Simuldubbing would be really good for BM’s VA, too, now that I think about it. Better to have her record all her Wano lines ASAP.
Yeah, 700 is a milestone to be sure. 500-600 still feels like that “halfway to caught up” point. But 700 feels like we’re making progress on catching up to the subbed. Man, that sure would be surreal.
We might be wrapped up with DR in August. I’ll be stunned if they don’t take a break between arcs.
-
I mean, simul dubbing could be arguably worse, cuz if she couldn’t record anymore there could be a mish mash of 2 VAs in the same material. Either way yeah, a simul dub would be the dream.
-
The microsoft store now has all of dub piece up to this point… minus season 9 voyage 2. As before many of them are straight up unpurchasable, and the missing episode problem is even worse with there being like 3 voyages that straight up only have 1 episode.
-
Sounds like they’re all in the process of being uploaded and updated. I’m really not sure why anyone would want to buy those anyways. The video player doesn’t even work on your phone and all the episodes are free with a funimation subscription.
Going through the last set very slowly. Everything after Pica’s intro is super slow, even with the dub helping it feel a little faster. This part of the arc (and much of it after the flashback) are a bit of a slog, eh? Eyes on the prize: Zou and WCI. Would be crazy to get WCI by year’s end.
-
The sloppy releasing of all this content makes me worry more so about if the same issues will continue to happen once the content we actually care about comes out.
I'd actually say the section that drags the most to me is a lot of the collosuem stuff at the beginning, overall its been an improvement. Voyage 5 isn't bad by any means, but it and voyage 2 kinda suffer through stuff thats esential for the plot but no huge pay offs.
Out of the voyages we have left 7 should be the weakest one, but even then we get some cool fight conclusions. The last 2 should be super exciting.
-
@Blake:

I wonder if an announcement of all the unlicensed movies being dubbed together and released in a few bundles would be considered big enough of an announcement, but I could see it happening. Not as big as a simuldub but this type of thing feels fairly likely at this point.
-
Movie releases sounds more likely. Even if it's only one or two.
-
Speaking of movies isnt it time for another One Piece film, Stampede was like two years ago
-
Yearly or even every-other-year releases for movies became a thing of the past after Strong World. I wouldn't expect another film for at least a couple years.
-
I'm fine with less big movies, but I'd really like for the specials to come back. I don't believe that working on a special would reduce the quality of the episodes. Toei has a ton of animators and works on multiple shows. They can balance having a special worked on simultaneously.
-

If it was just 1 or 2 movies being dubbed I don't think they'd even bother saying there's an announcement coming at Episode 1000 though. With Toei commissioning FUNi for dubs now I could easily see all movies just come out dubbed now like they have in other territories for years now. I feel even the Crunchyroll (?) stream of Movie 9 was a hint of this too.

Well, the dressrosa anime is infamous for its inconsistent quality and it had by far the most movies and specials worked on during its life time. And now, one of the best eras for animation in the history of the show, we just so happen to have no specials coming out. So make of that what you will.

Correlation does not imply causation.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Weird that their social media hasn’t acknowledged the May 4 release date.
-
I was just pointing out facts, a lot of things said on here are very much assuming correlation implies causation anyways. That’s just kinda how speculation works.
I will say I think they probably theoretically COULD do so, I just don’t think they would actually put in the money for the sheer amount of time and resources. I think it’s safe to assume that during that era of the anime the staff was very much spread thin.
Either way, I just don’t care much personally. Specials did very little for me. It’s always either rushed recaps or really boring filler adventures. Episode of East Blue and 3D2Y are the only ones I think were done somewhat well.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
So, I guess putting out trailers for the previous voyage right as the next one is about come out is just the norm now? Weird marketing strategy.
-
Heart of Gold is phenomenal. I enjoy having the recaps, too. 3D2Y and Nebulandia are fun at least, if not great.
Toei can afford to hire more people to work on new projects, like the specials.
-
Honestly just forgot about heart of gold lol, pretty decent for what it is. And yeah, once again I think they can afford it, but realistically I cant see them going for it. Obviously if it does happen I’d love to be wrong.

Weird that their social media hasn’t acknowledged the May 4 release date.
TV specials take a lot of staff from the show itself, a simple look at the various levels of staff for them would show that, and most other animators at Toei are busy with other shows, so yes the specials do affect the anime and there isn't much staff available outside of the main anime staff to make one and even if they did make one, it would be 100% outsourced like Episode of Skypiea and we all know how that turned out - You're thinking too big with Toei's staff.
-
They can afford to hire more people, is what I’m saying. Taking on more work without increasing staff is an obvious mistake.
-
In the upcoming flashback kid Vergo appears, does he ever speak? Cuz on the wiki it doesnt list a seperate actor, and given how deep his voice is normally Id doubt they'd keep the same VA for him as a child.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Oh yeah I don't know how we haven't mentioned this, but Apoo gets a few lines in Kaidos introduction in S11 V9, so thats when we'll see him recast. Such a shame Brad Venable is gone so young, may he rest in peace.
-
@Blake:

They kept the same VA for him as a child. Might not be the route the dub goes, but that is definitely what they did originally.
-
Ah okay, I've been trying to check the episodes myself but it seems like they kinda jump from law to doffys past at kinda random points. I do wonder what it sounds like though, maybe he has more range than I thought. Either way I'm sure they'll recast him with a woman if they did that for Law already.
They shouldnt have to do too much for the younger doflamingo family, most of them are already adults. We technically see Diamante at 14, but I think Oda miscalculated the age or something cuz he looks like he's in his 20's lol, so Im sure he'll sound like it. We see 9 year old Pica but he wont have to be recast for obvious reasons. Buffalo basically sounds the same as a kid in the original so they'll probably keep that, so the only one thats sort of a question mark is Baby 5. In the original its the same VA, but I dont know if Katelyn has that high of a range.
-
Ehh I'm sure Katelyn can do a passable child's voices that kind of a weird one to expect a separate VA for… I wonder who's gonna voice kis Doflamingo and how they got got for Corazon
-
I am amazed funi has been using multiple voice talents for all these dubbed episodes. 4kids was already having trouble and making people voice multiple roles in the short amount episodes they adapted. I wonder if more 4kids actors will show up in finish dub ever again?
-
Veronica Taylor and Erica Schroder might appear. They both did Funimation roles fairly recent. Taylor was Ribrianne in Dragon Ball Super and Schroder is the protagonist of… Suppose a Kid from the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town (man I hate light novel titles).
I could see Marc Diraison and Lisa Ortiz return, they both still work (Dirason played Ging in Hunter x Hunter and Ortiz is still doing Pokemon). -
I feel like you were probably referring to this when you said "more" but just in case you're unaware both Disco and Indigo have VA's that were in the 4kids dub. It's completely possible we'll see more, many are still in the industry, they just don't have the presence they once did.
Funi is usually pretty strategic about when they reuse people so it's not too distracting, which I'm thankful for. Its long enough that if 2 characters appear far apart enough and sound similar most people wont notice.
I will say there are a few exceptions though. In the early days they reused Jonathan C. Osbourne a bit too often. He voiced Shojo, Gaimon, and Broggy in a really short amount of time. That being said all of these characters haven't appeared in forever and I miss his voice its so unique! Jeremy Inman is kinda similar but his roles arent nearly as close together so it isnt as egregious.
They clearly don't have as many old men as they always need, so one of the most recycled actors in the show is R. Bruce Elliot. He voices whitebeard obviously, but also Nako (the doctor from cocoyashi village), Henzo (old dude from rainbow mist), and most recently Gancho from dressrosa.
Randy E. Aguebor playing both brownbeard and hajrudin recently was also really destracting, I'm ultimately glad he was recast as the latter because of that.
-
Justin Cook is the only egregious one I can think of. Bellamy and Kidd sound nearly identical and they’re both recurring characters that appear within thirty episodes of each other multiple times (front and back half of DR).
-
What I don't understand is everybody says they made Bellamys voice deeper to sound less like Kid, but to me that just makes him sound MORE like him. Kid was always the deeper, gravellier one. I've said this before but if anything they should have excentuated that his voice has higher, especially considering his epithet is "the hyena", which very much implies he has a higher voice even in the manga.
-

In a rare turn of events, I agree with you 100%.
-
Would you guys say the One Piece’s cast of important side characters is larger or smaller than MHA? Imo, if funimation can handle the cast of MHA, it can handle just about any series thrown at them.
-
Larger definitely. MHA has a fair bit but you have to also take into account that OP is 900 episodes long and has the amount MHA has like every new major arc.
-
@Blake:
Larger definitely. MHA has a fair bit but you have to also take into account that OP is 900 episodes long and has the amount MHA has like every new major arc.
True, but it seems as if MHA throws new characters in every episode lol. One piece is grand and pretty incomparable to most shows of course. A lot of one piece side characters were introduced early on, so i think finding cast for bigger characters later on in the series shouldn’t be a challenging task. By that I mean, not as challenging as finding a cast for a large series on shorter notice like in MHA. I could be totally wrong tho haha, that’s just what I think of the subject.
-
I think thats just simul dub shows in general really. Even then they have the manga to cross reference if need be if they need to know how important a character is down the line. One Pieces schedule is must more lenient, true, but I think when it comes to the sheer amount of people you need to cast it takes the cake.
-
Collection 26 (which includes the first voyage of Dressrosa, 11.1) is currently a few $ cheaper than 11.1 itself on Amazon if you haven't gotten it yet
