Yeah so far it's very subpar. And the art still makes it hard to follow action. Getting rid of everything that was supposed to set up the main character's traits in that one off and then in the 1st chapter was a mistake. What could have made Hachimaru more unique was to at least some phobias and ailments. Or at least have him get used to walking and being so active. Like give him low Constitution or Stamina. Something…
Samurai 8 Hachimaru-den

Completely agree with the complaints, especially regarding the art style. It feels so cluttered and uninspired.

It's like a far more extreme version of what happened with Deku suddenly going from quirkless to getting OfA. Except here it feels completely unearned and even more cliche, and just makes his disability feel like a footnote more than anything else. So far the only thing is that he's ignorant of the outside world, which isn't remotely unique.

I have a very strong suspicion that Kishimoto is actually contributing to the art despite being credited only as the writer, mostly because of the rocky and woody textures. They give me Naruto's final war flashbacks.
It's really dishonest to advertise this as the story of a weak boy who wants to be a samurai when the end of chapter 3 already tells us this is a story of a boy who is special among special people.
-
I'm also not a fan of another character having the "who is he? He must be special/ destined for greatness." Attached to him.
-
I read the 1st chapter when it 1st dropped, but then I got left behind when I started to think it was a monthly for some reason. Caught up on Saturday.
There's nothing that has hooked me yet. I'll give it 2-3 more chapters and if it continues as it has, i'll drop it. It's not horrible, I just feel like it might not be for me. Maybe when they leave that planet, things will get more interesting.
-
I thought this was the best chapter yet. Clear art, clear understanding of where the story is going, and clear characterizations. Might be because there wasn't much action, but I'm paying for Viz, so I'll keep reading it unless it gets offensively bad!
-
Damn, I want to like this, but the art is so busy.
-
And this is it. I only remembered to read the chapter today, read the two first pages and like 10 pages later I realized I was just passing the pages without bothering to read them (pretty much the same that happened with Seven Deadly Sins, except it took 5 chapters instead of almost 300).
Dropped!
-
It's odd to have combat in a chapter and not recall why or what really happened. I might circle back to it if it suddenly starts getting props in the groups I follow.
But it's really bland but too busy. The main character lost all personality at the start. He's just protagonist number 8.

They've done an extremely poor job at explaining samurai. From what I understand, samurai are cyborgs that have a soul that is a sword, a bone hilt somewhere in the body, a key that is their spine, a pet that is their holder with which they can fuse and stuff, maybe a DNA sword that can only be unsheated by the owner, and a core or whatever Daruma showed Hachi's dad. Everything is plug-and-play. On top of that Hachimaru might be more cyborg that normal samurai because of his own previous prosthetics, since he took the Ronin by surprise with the cane and even asked about it. It's like Kishi liked so much the eye swapping in Naruto that he thought "what if I made characters that can basically swap every part of their bodies because they're cyborg samurai?"
Also, there's no worldbuilding at all. What's Hachimaru's town/area called? What's the name of the planet? Will they travel to places within a single star system or hop between galaxies?
-
The series just feels weirdly amateurish. The art is messy and everything is hard to follow. Character constantly throw around new terms.
The main character isn't very interesting. He seems to have already overcome his weaknesses. People complain about Naruto going from having to work hard to being the destined child, and to an extent I agree, but he still had work hard to succeed. Hachimaru went from being a kid who couldn't leave the house due to illness, to a badass who can easily defeat the villains within the first few chapters.
It's too bad. As I said before I did enjoy Naruto to the end, and I'm really enjoying Boruto (Both the anime and the manga). I wish this was better. Hopefully it gets better.
-
I don't find it hard to follow honestly. Samurai key, holder and a Princess. Pretty simple, even the way of the Samurai concept. I just haven't seen anything that has hooked me yet. I like the art style, but I need something to keep me engaged like i'll go crazy if there was a break week for it.

Canceled in 3…2...
oh wait it's kishimoto so they will give him way more time than this series will probably deserve. He was a one trick pony, with naruto becoming shit long before it ended.

Update: The bone hilt is part of the holder, just like the guns (even though Daruma has his own hilt) and there's a princess component now. I just follow this manga because it's between the other stuff that I read and the morbid curiosity of whether it will get axed.

"I've got a wide strike zone" Made me chuckle.
-
Oh boy, princesses who need to be protected. That bodes well for the female characters in this series.
Ann has a pretty good design at least.

Lol, thought the same thing. Not a fan of it going the "They're fated to be together!" route either.
-
Will this series be the worst parts of the last naruto arcs destilled into the entire story? I hope not.
-
I forget what's a lockerball
-
The device that the Professor uses reminds me of the
! Reaper technique that the 3rd used against Orochimaru. I'm guessing after this debacle, the story changes for the better. Maybe more world building
-
I really liked this last chapter and I've either gotten used to the art, or it's become better. This has officially joined my definite reads list.
-
Yeah, I on the other hand am totally not feeling it. They set up a battle royale only for us to see a bunch of random panels and then out of nowhere shows up this noble samurai wh wants a duel with the main char? Hmm, not making any sense to me. The story just isn't interesting. There is a lot of potential underneath, but it's just not clicking in terms of presentation. At all. The art is getting better, at least. I agree with that. It seems more to me like Kishi is the one drawing and some random new guy is writing, while it's the opposite actually…

Ouch, seems this is truly a bomba.

It's suprising reading how much was changed early on in Naruto.
-
Yeah definitely. Later naruto arcs and now samurai 8 give me zero confidence in what early naruto would have been without many editor suggestions.
-
Those changes are interesting, because they clearly made the manga better, but then ended being negative points. Kishimoto didn't know how to handle Sasuke or the konoha 11. But then, if Kishi was already getting lost before Sasuke's introduction the alternative would have been not getting any Naruto at all.
About Samurai 8, I kind of want to know what's happening currently, but reading the manga is so hard between the art and the exposition. Anyone have a summary of what happened after Hachi met the princess?
-
I'm not smart at all and i'm able to understand what's going on. I keep seeing people say that it's hard to keep up with. I think it's more about not wanting to understand it, which is weird in itself. I haven't read any complex storytelling or concepts.
They needed an alternative to the keys and Hachi's creator felt bad and ran away with him. Keys open boxes, princesses can support Samurai. They want to find the keys and protect the universe from Carla. The protagonist is bland and the story is just ok. Nothing to fall in love with and no complex narrative techniques. The only interesting thing is salty Naruto fans looking for reasons to bash Kishimoto and using this average manga as an excuse. I could be wrong tho.
Wow, i'm just catching up. Started on ch 21, now on 25.
! The twist with Kotsuga was beautifully done.
