Spring rundown 4-5 episodes in!
tl; dr Anime is cool and good. This season has been pretty great. There isn't a single series I don't enjoy.
Attack On Titan's second season has been a blast to watch - the first three episodes struggled a bit with direction - it felt like the intense scenes were a little "too intense" and clashed with the "calmer" stuff, but the animation, music and anime-only additions have been very good and improving the story. It's just as gripping and great watch as the first season even if I've reread that portion in the manga for many times. As a fan I am very happy.
My Hero Academia's second season is just as fun as the first season, but it also has the same flaws. It's really jarring to go from AoT to this because AoT is basically the smart version of adaptions: It has ditched the recaps in favour of more material or smart additions to the story. Basically, MHA feels really Shounen Jump-y in it's pacing. Not as bad as some of the episodes in the first season and it still has great animation, but yes, it's like a very high quality Toei Animation adaption, rather than something smarter.
Re: Creators is the surprise hit. Ever felt like Light Novel anime frustrate and make you groan for the typical trappings they fall into? Dumb names, fanservice and terrible stories? Well, Re: Creators has a genius premise that mimics the typical Light Novel stuff, but at the same time comments on said trappings and storytelling in general even. It's extremely watchable and has great characters. The writing is just really really strong and it's a lot of fun so far.
Rage Of Bahamut: Virgin Soul is the underrated fun story that will probably be forgotten because the original series is a underrated fun story that not many people ultimately noticed. The characterization is even stronger this season and the animation is at points even more incredible. It's even two cours! I feel like they probably won't be able to keep up the animation quality for those two cours, but if they keep up the character writing, it's going to be excellent.
Little Witch Academia continues with it's charm and very fun characterization, too. The plot itself is very cool to follow, too.
Finally, Berserk is actually really really compelling. It looks like trash, and while I liked the first cour, the second one is much better storytelling-wise, too. The most recent episode is my favorite of the season and the only thing it did is finally clarfy everything that's going on - in the sense of just the most general picture of things. I don''t know if the first cour also had material cutting problems or something, but it feels like the story has a real direction and a sort of endpoint for the main players. Gutts' character has a very clear direction. Griffith has a direction. Serpico and Farnese have a direction. The writing is very strong on most fronts. So CG or no, I dig Berserk.
