Good episode. Glad they kept the Rape Horse in, lol.
-
Welp i can't keep up anymore, this anime is so fucking bad it makes my skin crawl. Too bad.
-
I'm surprised they went with CGI for such a big series. At least with Kingdom they were taking a punt. Overall though, I only half read the manga when nothing else got a release and I wanted something to read. I'm actually really enjoying the anime.

*Removes an important character piece that will be important in future *Keeps the horse rape scene….... Yep fuck this anime.
-
every series out there can get a decent looking show out, madhouse can adapt stuff like one punch man even with amazing animation, and yet Berserk can never get at least standard decent animation.

Other than areola and nipples

Tfw everything in the new berserk warriors game (coming out this fall in na and eu btw^^) looks way better than this anime, lol

Black Swordsman and Lost Children arc, which is chock full of development for Guts considering what he was when the manga started

Easiest way to do detailed armor and big army fights.
CGI gets used a lot in anime, particularly in mecha shows. It's really good for keeping consistency on stuff that's hard to do by hand.

Lol. Not true at all. With like 150 shows coming out per year, there's tons of shitty looking anime, you just don't care about any of it. And OPM is a a weird exception. They threw a ton of money at and it was like, THE best looking anime show in the last several years. Possibly because it was only 12 episodes, but also possibly because the standards on the manga art were so high it being anything less than out of the park would offend everyone as pointless.
Berserk is in kind of the same boat, but its art is even more detailed and impossible to replicate in animation.
And Berserk's original anime was fine for the period but aged badly. Characters were on model, it told the story, the music was fantastic, and the mood was handled really well. And the movies looked really with gorgeous backgrounds and very fluid animation and generally looked nice… except for the cg in the first movie... which was better by the end of the movie and fine by the second.
*Removes an important character piece that will be important in future *Keeps the horse rape scene….... Yep fuck this anime.
Important character piece would have been like 10 episodes just to get through the stuff in the first three volumes, and only if they rushed. similar for Lost Children. Horse rape scene is horrific iconic moment that takes a minute.
Yes, they should just adapt the whole series and do the missing arcs, but if they only have X amount of episodes I understand wanting to get through a certain section and a good stopping point. So it was either skip, trim everything down to the point that nothing worked anywa, or get to the end of the season at a completely awful nonsensical stopping point.
It sucks, and its not how anyone would have preferred them to do it… but it is understandable why. They're probably trying to get through the entire Conviction arc, which is about as long as Golden Age was... and that took 24 episodes... and even that cut out like a volume's worth of content in the middle and at the end.
Tfw everything in the new berserk warriors game (coming out this fall in na and eu btw^^) looks way better than this anime, lol
Yes, because a game tends to have higher budget than an anime series, they only have to make a handful of characters, and can throw more money at making ten seconds look good than having to make 90 minutes look good and they dont't have to worry about really conveying the story when text notes can cover it and its all about gameplay. (And once they have the character model and lighting effects done well once, it'll continue to look that good… but doesn't mean they're covered for closeups or unusual camera angles or anything.)
If its like every musou game ever though its still going to also butcher the story into a cliffnotes version and also leave out a ton of stuff.
The game looks good, no question, but it IS a game rather than an anime. DIfferent standards.
Berserk is a bloody, violent, NOT for all ages series that can't ever be more than niche. No matter how long it runs or how popular it is to its devoted fans, it's just not going to ever be mainstream, so it's not ever going to get a huge budget thrown at it, same way Bastard won't.

While also going the weird route by going the original route for tying up the story of the game because the story is still ongoing.

Eh, I think having them get on the boat and being hopeful about the future might suffice in this case.
Or they could just hamfist a Femto showdown in there that doesn't work at all, sure.
The narrative won't matter much in the game beyond setpieces and maybe some still shots trying deperately to present the story with some key phrases that only fans will be able to follow that already know the story anyway.
If Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors, Gundam, One Piece, Arslan, and FotNS are any indication anyway.
Unless they go full on fanfic like they did with Orochi, Zelda and Dragon Quest, but they don't seem to be.

Mind providing some more information? Those references have all gone right over my head.

! Black Swordsman showed how Guts would do anything to kill all the Apostles after the events of Eclipse, such as sleep with one of the Apostles just so he can get close to kill it and sacrifice innocents to kill the Snake Baron.
! However in his fight with the Count especially after hearing his backstory and how the Count refused to sacrifice his daughter, he realized how his anger should be towards the God Hand for taking advantage of humans ( though he will still try and kill and Apostles that threaten him and his friends). Even though the Count was a monster Guts made sure the Count's daughter hated him, not her father at the end
! Lost Children was the same thing but Guts realized, with the help of Skull Knight that protecting Casca was more important than revenge but that he would have to make that decision himself. Plus his interactions with Jill and Puck help him mellow out considerably, even though he can't fully escape the past -

As someone that's literally read a few chapters here and there and watched a few films, and is now watching the series. I literally had no idea about any of that stuff but it's something I can look into on the wiki.

Well shit .
-
The Theresa thing may be important later on so leaving that out is a bad idea.
-
Or you can read the manga.
I've been on a run of reading the last few issues. Basically they arrived at the island. Really can't see myself starting from scratch.
-
But from scratch is where all the story is! The current run is only going to be a handful of chapters every few months.
I plan on re-reading it, its been many years for me though.
-
I've reread certain parts lately. It's really interesting seeing Farnese back in the earlier arcs which shows how much she's progressed since then. Definitely one of my favorite characters.
-
I really like Farnese's character in the manga too, she's one of the few that has a real progression and meaningful change. Though the anime is keeping pretty close to the manga's points, I think they're rushing her character development and there isn't much time establishing her as a holier-than-thou uptight noble. She's literally introduced and put into a state of weakness all in the same episode. It's hard to feel any sympathy for her when all we see is her weakness and she hasn't really been established that long in a position of power.
-
I finished rereadig it recently, and everything after conviction arc was a completely different experience than how i remembered it, specially the later chapters which I read as they came out.

i want every companion to die, except puck. pls

…And do you really think that quality of story and art fell?I never did...

Dunno what the policy for pre-release spoilers on this part of the board but it looks like we got some pics from the new chapter up here

I never thought, said or implied that.
Rereading it was a different experience for me because the first time I read the later chapters I had forgotten a lot of stuff, heck I didn't remember who Daiba, Raksas, and the pope were by the time they showed up on Rickert's arc. When reading the last chapters of the sea god arc I didn't remember the first chapters of that arc, etc… I thought everything was more disconnected really.

Doesn't this mean Mangastream picked up berserk? Mangastream uploads their spoilers there and its around the same time as the WSJ uploads
-
I just dont understand how they can recreate everyone's design so good, but screw up Guts…..
-
Guts isn't exactly a sight for sore eyes to start with especially when he's in a state of bloodlust.
-
new chapter http://bato.to/reader#72fd913cdd58f503 my only take from this chapter is Puck have been feeding the behelit cheese
-
Read it and cant wait for the next chapter. It hurts that its so short.
-
Puck will defeat the God hand by given them cheese poisoning.

"The Hundred Man slayer of the Band of the Falcon, Do u know him?"Of course he knows him, It was Corkus.
-
Great Chapter! love love love it~
-
With the rate Miura's going at, Casca might be fixed by the end of next year!
-
Seriously, they've been travelling with Guts all this time and didn't know he was in the Hawks? Or that he was the 100 man slayer? Really?
I get that Guts wouldn't want to talk about that much but you'd think it would have come up.
-
Well between the one track minded killing machine and the grown woman with the mental capacity of the child whose going to
spill the beans about his exploits?Plus his status as the Black Swordsman seems to be much more popular than his former Hawks status.
-
Just caught up, I'm extremely LTTP but I love this. Now to wait a shitload for every new chapter.

It did came up in Vritannis, Guts simply dodged the question.

As I still do enjoy Berserk manga I wonder why they even try to make new anime season that looks absolutely terrible in my opinion..
-
Because anime reaches a wider audience than manga and pulls in new fans?
The anime looks fine, its just nowhere near the detail of the manga because it was never going to be. As for actual pacing and mood? That's a different argument. But it looks fine.
The biggest issues with the cgi are
-the lip flaps are a bit weird (can be fixed by hand animating scenes with lots of talking or picking a different camera angle.)
-the auto generated shadows create a few iffy looking shapes on the faces at certain angles that no one going by had would do… but only a colorist is going to notice that.
-long spurts of continuous motion (especially on Puck when flying) look a little awkward. The ghibli coproduction Ronja has the same issues but you got over it eventually, as do most television CG shows... and most of them get much much better after just a few episodes. (As is, the movies the most awkard bit was the opening of the first film where theystarted with a giant battle scene, but got pretty decent by halfway through and was fine in the other films.)
Otherwise, the fact that it keeps armor accurate and consistent and detailed is a good thing, as are the more complex and realistic than normal anime faces, and the fact it allows heavy crowd scenes.
Hopefully by the end of the series run either the cg gets better as they spend more time with it, or the director learns how to hide the shortcomings a bit better. After watching the first episode I figured out how to hide and work around most of the problems, so maybe they can too if it wasn't all being produced simultaneously.
-
What a nice chapter. Really cool to see them all in a save place where thier actions are not dominated but absolute fight for survival and advance. It's kind of like the Fellowship of the Ring reaching Lothlórien.@Robby:

That surprised me as well. Shows you how different Guts' crew is compared to the Strawhats. I can vividly remember Oda putting in little hints after the timeskip that they told each other about thier adventures during the two years apart. As he said in this chapter. He does not like to think (and talk apparently) about his past.

He doesn't like to talk about his past at all
-
The art seems so off these last chapters
-
I had my doubts about the anime after the first episode, but after episode 5 I think it's amazing!! Totally hooked and really enjoying seeing the chapters animated!
