The hype was killed outright when Laxus one-shot them all, including Ivan himself. They had no chance to resurrect their hype after all that.

Juvia wasnt with FT for as long as Gray Erza Natsu and even Lucy but they also said they didnt want Natsu or Lucy involved they wanted to take them down themselves obv so since Juvia wasnt needed they didnt think she should know its understandable

I know they stretched it a little, but don't pretend it's something so stupid that it never happened in anything other besides Fairy Tail.
For all we know, Avatar might have checked where Gray was before he joined them, either by having someone investigate or by using some form of MAGIC. Anyone who would have found Juvia in her present state would have one less reason to doubt Gray. If you're gonna infiltrate a dark, potentially really dangerous guild with who knows what kind of magic in their disposal, better to play safe.
I know it was a cheap plot device, but it's videly used in all the media and not as insane as you make it out.
Valid points if these three things were not true:
a) fairy tail treats all members the same, time spent there doesnt correspond with trust earned. Gajeel joined at the same time as Juvia and Makarov sent him on an extremely dangerous double agent mission
b) Juvia couldve went after Gray on her own just as well, blowing his cover much sooner. Letting her in on the plan wouldve secured the success of the operation, i think she couldve played the left bride to outsiders just fine; i know this is hindsight, but shouldve been obvious in the planning stage
c) Gray didnt seem to be able to give two shits about his cover, telling the Avatar members everything about his flimsy, hole filled alibi to their face
Razh, i concede that i exaggerated my outrage for effect, seems i was more pissed of at FT than usual. i usually really dont care about Fairy Tail, but i guess im still ticked off about when all these "best-friends" left Lucy to stew in her own longing and misery

Anyway, good job killing the little tension you managed to create, Mashima. Good job.
And also sidelining all the characters that don't compose the main four in the worst ways possible. Juvia was lied to which led to destructive consequences, Wendy had to be saved and then left behind to heal said person, Gajeel had a cameo and is now forgotten at the moment. But it won't matter much in the end because f.r.i.e.n.d.s.h.i.p. Worst part is that I actually like both Juvia and Gajeel, they're among the few characters that have some semblance of motivation that doesn't just boil down to friendship. And Happy.Two chapters for several weeks in a row is an amazing feat, but I wonder what'll happen to the story…

You bring out some valid points yourself. As you noticed, I wasn't really defending the action. It could have and should have been done more elaborately.
I'm not even sure what I'm expecting of Fairy Tail nowadays. It's so… lukewarm.

It's really a pity that Mashima used global-scale evil organization only to be wasted in a few pages, with only a handful of characters.

Yes, I noticed, but they are supposed to gather during the massacre day. All of them branches, in one place to boot. That's why Erza gave Natsu and the others clearance to openly run wild. The enemies have laid down all their cards. The only thing left to do is to mow them down, FT style.
Unless somewhere else, there are other secret branches that aren't participating in the event, as it's just a distraction for the heroes to fall for.

Glad that Avatar's being dealt with quickly - while that sort of thing isn't great all of the time, their main members are clearly fodder compared to the main cast, and I prefer that over something like Bleach, where every named member would get a fight that's at least three to five chapters long despite being completely inconsequential.

And I actually liked the increased strength as well as the lasso, even though it's nothing ground-breaking in terms of innovation. I'm just wondering when Mashima will stop with the subplots and go for a completete arc once again, not that I mind the short-lived action that much. It's actually refreshing because FT is at its best when its simply trying to entertain, not going for serious story developments.

Yeah, next two chapters all these redshirts make a comeback because black magic and "according to plan", then Gajeel happens and then some other thing hardly relevant. Wake me up when Gellal/Gerard or Zeref dies for real, so there is something accomplished in this series.
Not that I'm not entertained with the recent chapters but it feels so senseless. -

Nice that some of the other characters could do something for a change. Also, I was expecting Erza to say "As with my blade… it's covered in light!". Small victory there I guess.

Competent at fighting? She has been one of the main fighters pretty much every arc. Her powerups so far past the 2 year skip has been just basically lucy kick and lucy punch. Hardly something that would be good against non fodder.

I really hope this arc is over now, I can't take all this one shotting anymore. Avatar getting completely obliterated was okay but a war god? I can't take this anymore. I really hoped the series would have changed after the timeskip but I doubt that this series will ever change.

You know, Naruto got so much for shit because the ninjutsus became so overpowered and everything. In FT they are oneshotting "gods" like it's nothing^^
I'm still waiting for the first "real" arc post-timeskip nr. 2, I don't take all this showcasing of Natsu too serious.

The design of the war god was pretty cool, sucks that it had to appear after a time skip. Seriously, Hody put up more of a fight than this thing.
At this point, I just read the series for the few good fights it has here and there, and the few good moments. Too bad the Gajeel moment won't happen, but that was expected.

I hope this War God is the weakest of the 18 or the War God somehow survives Natsu's Dragon King Fist attack.
cause Mashima is kinda making Natsu's Power crazy high and if Natsu does lose to someone, it better be someone near War God Level instead of someone weaker then that cause Mashima should not forget that he just made Natsu's power at War God 2 Punches Defeat Level.
if we do see another War God Later, then i kinda Hope Mirajane Takes its power and gets a War God Soul Form.
cause we already see Team Natsu at a high level and i hope Mashima doesnt ignore the other FT Guild Members who may get a important fight later.

Well, that went downhill quickly.
This must be among the most ironic and sarcastic portrayals of friendship I've ever seen. Over and over and over Natsu's been spouting how important bonds and that stuff is, but I can't think of a single occasion lately where the Fairies actually teamed up to defeat something. It's just been Natsu hogging the glory. For god's sake, Gray and Erza outright abandoned and lied to Juvia, which nearly killed her. Lucy was left in the dust after the breakup. And while during the first time skip the members tried keep together and contact the lost group, this time they just went off never seeing each other again. How the hell is that friendship?
And would it really be too much to ask for at least a semblance of tension in the series?
I guess I should just turn my brain off when reading.

Seriously, from now on there is absolutely no more tension possible. In this world there is absolutely no consistency. If the plot demands, everything can beat everything. Zeref appears in his final form, pwns everyone but then gets pwned by Happy. I believe it. I just believe it! Besides, there is no proper worldbuilding or foreshadowing. On the other continents there are mages even stronger than everyone else which abilities stronger than magic or curses... and able to summon even stronger gods than these 18? I believe it. Now, I absolutely have no reason to NOT believe it.
Well, FT surely falls into the "so bad, it's actually good" category for me. Therefore, I won't drop it.
