Chapter 15 spoilers:
Tokyo Ghoul:re
-
-
I'm just a little annoyed that they keep bringing up old characters at the end of the chapter, with only one liners or no line s at at all. I get it, you wanna make it special and focus on the new characters, but we can't do that if you bring up old characters we also loved and tease us with them looking older and staring off into the distance.
Maybe things will kick off into high gear with Ayato. I hope so anyway. I need my kaneki back in my life.
New chapters starts of the previous chapter's ending:

The auction is going to be a bloodbath and I cannot wait for it to start.
-
Hype for Yorknew, I mean, Madam's Human Auction arc!
-
Does this means Ayato will die?
Cause I will be very happy if that its the case. -
I know, I read it and I was very happy. I think this my be what tips Kaneki over. God but the speculation for someone even closer to Kaneki is going to appear probably at the end of this arc or the next one. Finally it's picking up, Thank God.
-
Sorry to bump when there's no chapter, but I swear re-reading Tokyo Ghoul does absolute wonders to it. It's just so clever. Either the author wrote this for a really long time, or he really has no other life beyond his manga.
Do these pages seem familiar?

Yeah, chapters later in the final arc, we have:
http://www.twistedhelscans.com/read/tokyo_ghoul/en/13/122/page/20
http://www.twistedhelscans.com/read/tokyo_ghoul/en/13/128/page/17On the final arc itself, it took me completely by surprise the TG ended, but when I re read it, with good translation, and quality scans, it seems to make much more sense in retrospect. Everything's coming to conclusion.
Also Batoto comments section:I can't be the first to notice this, but I love it: 1000 divided by 7, rounded up is 143. So if the 1st chapter is 1000, the 2nd is 993, the 3rd is 986…. the torture countdown finishes on the last chapter. I knew the number of chapters was planned since the 72nd was titled "Halfway", but this is extra neat.
-
Wow, that final tidbit. mindblow I knew the halfway bit, but did not think of that at all.
Yeah, this series is great. The finale for TG was excellent, I think it is one of my favorite endings of a manga just from the thematic and character perspective. Sure, there's hanging story threads, but I don't think the story's is this series' strong point. It's basically the only thing I want the anime to keep because they've been keeping the important tidbits of character development with this season. Better end it as the tragedy it's designed to be - I really want those final chapters to be animated, like the fight with Jason was and as the opening lyrics might be an indication, I think it still might be.
I liked this week's episode a lot more that last week's. It had Kaneki's confrontation with Amon as the centipede and tidbits with the twins, Suzuya and Ayato. For what it is, writing-wise it's fine. I just feel like Kaneki's transformation isn't nearly as weighty because of his "monster" side being almost non-existant, which the presence of makes Kaneki as interesting of a character as he is. His fight with Ayato in the manga was a really good exploration and really dove in the negative side of his new way of thinking and the aftermath of that added to that, the anime keeping the scenes it did kind of still works, it's not bad, just doesn't have as much weight.

Was that Tyson or Muhamad?
-
[hide][/hide]
Is that some Japanese hand sign or something? The only other place I remember seeing it is when Matahachi was waving his hand in front of Kojiro lol. That dude's quite suspicious. I wonder if he's going to jump in to save to save Suzuya and screw the whole mission up.
Ishida is continuing to tease us with Touka showing up here and there. She's really acting quite differently. Wonder what happened. (Beside Kaneki "dying"). Other than that, hype for Auction Arc! There have training montages just for this! -

Also Batoto comments section:Yeah Ishida really knows what's he's doing. There are many other interesting stuff like those in the manga too once you re-read them closely. Like this (Its a bit long but its worth the read)
! > About the Name ‘Aogiri Tree’
I recently got really curious about why Ishida Sui choice the name Aogiri Tree (which translates to Chinese parasol tree, a plant/tree used to make Chinese musical instruments), so I looked around a bit and found some things that may (?) be relevant. Or not lol.
So, アオギリの樹 (Aogiri no Ki) basically translates to Chinese parasol tree; it’s also known as wutong, Firmiana simplex, and formerly Firmiana platanifolia.
I tried to look for more info on Chinese parasol trees such as myths and possible symbolism, but without much luck, hahahah. I was really close to giving up when I found two…rather interesting poems. One written by a Chinese man and another written by a Japanese man who (apparently?) wrote poetry in Chinese. BOTH poems, funnily enough, tell of a phoenix perching on a parasol tree.
First, Liu Yong’s poem ‘Phoenix Perched on the Parasol Tree’:
On a high tower I lean long against a slender breeze.
My vision ends in spring sorrow
rising dark and dark at the sky’s edge.
Grass colored by misty light of the dying sun.
No words. Who can understand why I stand at this banister?Maybe I should go wild and get drunk,
singing over my cup.
But forced joy is tasteless.
I don’t regret my loosening belt and robe.
I’m fading away from you.— The Anchor Book of Chinese Poetry: From Ancient to Contemporary, The Full 3000-Year Tradition
There are a handful of interesting similarities between this poem and the things Kaneki suffered through at the hands of Aogiri, such as…
- the high tower (the torture room)
- my vision ends in spring sorrow (the reality that those happy, vibrant ‘spring’ days with his mother weren’t actually picture-perfect, which resulted in her death)
- dying sun (the ‘kane’ in Kaneki meaning gold which could equate to the sun and him dying slowly by Yamori’s hands?)
- who can understand why I stand at this banister? (this could mean a lot of things: his ghoul vs human fight, being on the brink of insanity and/or death, being confined and tortured, etc.)
- go wild and get drunk (giving in and eating other ghouls)
- but forced joy is tasteless (eating another ghoul even to become stronger to protect those around him doesn’t sit well with Kaneki and yamori didn’t taste too yummy either lol)
- I don’t regret loosening my belt and robe (aka letting go and changing into shironeki)
- I’m fading away from you (yeahhhh self-explanatory)
So yeah, kinda interesting. And then we have Chuugan Engetsu’s poem ‘Imitating the Old Style’:
Strong, strong is the wind of the Last Days*;
from the earth dust rises, swirl upon swirl.
In the heaven, the sun shines faintly;
in the world of men, both good and evil flourish.
Mole crickets and ants go after stench and filth;
but the phoenix perches on the parasol tree**.
Here there is one man far from worldly concerns:
he moves freely among the white clouds.*** The last of the Buddhist kalpas, or cycles, in which all things are destroyed. Chuugan is referring to the period of civil war between the Northern and Southern courts.
** The phoenix was said to perch only on top of a parasol tree (J. aogiri, Firmiana platanifolia), and then only when a saint was about to appear in the world.
— Traditional Japanese Poetry: An Anthology**
Things to note include…
-
last days ([aka ‘in which all things are destroyed’] could be referencing Aogiri’s involvement in the last arc and the huge death toll on both side of the fight)
-
in the world of men, both good and evil flourish (‘the world is wrong’)
-
mole crickets and ants go after stench and filth (Aogiri members are ruthless and seem to attack and eat each other)
-
but the phoenix perches on the parasol tree (phoenix = Kaneki, and he stands above the rest of Aogiri)
-
he moves freely among the white clouds
??????????????????????????? -
also could be one hell of a coincidence, but the ed of the anime ‘聖者たち’ (seijatachi) translates to ‘saints’, which is what a phoenix perched on a parasol tree foretells the arrival of.
So I feel the name Aogiri comes from a poem (which we know Ishida Sui is fond of), but more importantly, we have the phoenix that’s been mentioned to ‘perch’ or otherwise ‘be above’ Aogiri.
AND SO AT LAST WE COME TO…… THE PHOENIX.
Yes the phoenix, which I believe Kaneki symbolizes in both poems.
Greek mythology says a phoenix is associated with the sun and—more importantly—rebirth and/or resurrection. And while I’m sure Ishida Sui could have left it at that because that alone certainly embodies Kaneki in more than one way, I don’t think that’s where the symbolism ends. Everything up until now has had some connection to China (Aogiri’s name, Tatara’s supposed Chinese ties, the Chinese poet, and the Japanese poet even writing in Chinese). So while the Greek mythology is fine and dandy, I’m gonna be looking more toward…
Fenghuang, the Chinese phoenix.
Also known as Hou-ou, it represents loyalty, honesty, decorum and justice. But not just that!
"The Fenghuang was at times seen as the sacred symbolic joining of male and female, commonly seen as the Yin-Yang symbol. The Yin is female, the Yang male, and when combined, such as in the combination of Feng and Huang, it is representative of opposite forces meeting into a union that produces harmony and balance." — (x)
I think we can agree that Kaneki, with his human and ghoul side constantly at war up until the final chapters, is a perfect example of yin and yang and finding a balance.
There’s also this:
Yin is characterized as slow, soft, yielding, diffuse, cold, wet, and passive; and is associated with water, earth, the moon, femininity, and nighttime. (AKA, Kaneki with black hair in the beginning.)
Yang, by contrast, is fast, hard, solid, focused, hot, dry, and aggressive; and is associated with fire, sky, the sun, masculinity and daytime. (AKA, Kaneki with white hair by the end.)
Oddly enough, you’d think we’d have seen more yin and yang motifs throughout the series, especially since it suits Kaneki so well. And yet there are only two cases, and the timing of their appearances probably say a lot.
The first one someone pointed out a while back:
Itori’s wine glass. This takes place in chapter 143, the last chapter.
The second one I haven’t seen anyone point out, so maybe I’m just delusional but:
(DEAR GOD THIS SHOT FREAKS ME OUT I CAN’T EVEN LOOK AT IT TOO LONG JFC. THIS IS TAKEN FROM CHAPTER 139.)ANYWAY, just please take a look at the speech bubble to your left.
He says:
カネキ (Kaneki)
ケン (Ken)The ‘Ken’ is split in two, and in the middle is the center line of the yin and yang symbol (I hope you can see it?? lol).
As for the timing… Now, this is possibly the first yin and yang symbol that is shown in the entire series, and it happens one chapter before the all-important chapter where Kaneki finally accepts both human and ghoul sides and finds harmony. Or at least I think he does.
Looks like it to me.Sooo yeah. If this is all intentional, I must say that it’s kinda nice of Ishida Sui to throw in some yin and yang at the story’s close just as Kaneki comes to terms with himself at last.
It feels like, at the end, Kaneki was able to make peace with his very being and learned to relieve himself of all the worry and pain he had suffered ever since his stolen childhood and his transformation into a ghoul.
To be honest it also kind of foreshadows some of the events that might happen in TG:re. In the prequel Kaneki represented the centipede, a blind insect that hunts other disgusting creature. Since the story has transitioned from a tragedy to an epic, its been hinted that now he represents Fenghuang the Chinese Phoenix. Haise means Ash and we know Phoenix are known to be immortal as they can rise back from ashes.
Haise, meaning ash, is the ash from which the Fenghuang rose from.
The story also seems to be based on the Fool's Journey. Most of the things are pretty similar to it
http://www.learntarot.com/journey.htm
Just makes you wonder how long it took for him to plan all this.
-
Ah..symbolism. I know it sounds like something out of Bleach Asylum, but I just love it! TG is good enough for me to ponder and read about secret imagery within it.
Would that mean the Tarot journey could plot out :re's plot? Hm. It's vague enough to fit. Edit: Hold on, waitaminute. In that Tarot link, Chariot most likely represents the part where Kaneki sets off on his own to "pluck" enemies. And the Chariot card has two horses, one white and one black. Just like his hair.
-
The thing is there is actual symbolism in TG and all of it is relevant to the story, even if I'd say it's still relatively simple. Kubo thinks he's writing deep and meaningful stuff, but isn't really because there is nothing behind it. There's a difference between subtlety and delibrate slow pacing and obnoxious vagueness and absolutely abysmal pacing. TG means something ultimately, but if Bleach is supposed to have a meaning it sure comes across as boring nothing instead.

Heya Uta old buddy.
-
Chapter is out! http://imperialscans.com/read/tokyo-ghoul-re/18-ferry/1
Finally we get some action, Suzuya is great! Next chapter should be brilliant as the CCG begins their attack. Will be interesting to see whether they'll manage to save Mutsuki as well as whether Uta died from those blades. I'd really love to see his kagune, so hope we get to see him in action too.
-
Uta gets stabbed in the eyes by Lolita Suzuya
KARMAAAA~
-
But Uta was a "nice" ghoul right ? Why is he in charge of the auction ? Hum maybe he is undercover and works with Nishiki.
I like how Madam A follows her instinct. -

Itori and Uta were manipulating Kaneki by giving him informations that puts him in dangerous satuations just for the lulz.
Souta was the one who throw the steel beams on Rize.
And in chapter 143, they were celebrating Kaneki's downfall… -

And in chapter 143, they were celebrating Kaneki's downfall…Yikes, I forgot most of those. Thank you ZONBI.

-
I hope Uta is okay.
Was all this Suzuya's plan? I mean, when and how Tooru was caught? -
Tooru's been down on his luck these few chapters.
I did not expect a quinque leg, in fact I actually just forgot he even lost a leg in the first place:p. I wonder if he's going to go after madam out of his own grudge or something. And Uta is clearly gonna survive that stab.
-
I hope he still have Jason.
-
! And speaking of Jason…

Chapter is out! http://imperialscans.com/read/tokyo-ghoul-re/19-party/1
We get to see some Suzuya vs Ayato action, was waiting for this! Was also nice to see that Naki is no longer such a crybaby. Mutsuki on the other hand is really starting to annoy me and I hope to see more of her in the next few chapters.
-
I hope Ayato dies.
-
Whoa, really confused, to many people talking, too much chaos!! Art also is a little whack this week too, just look at Naki's face.
and also, Ishida, y u use too much screentone?
-
So, Gourmet talks french while his subordinate talks german?
What the hell is going on? -
^Idk, but I'll bet there'll be more about Germany in this series, since they made a point of there being another counter-ghoul centre there.
Theory Time: Kanae vs Torso next week. Or maybe Kanae crushing Torso. Meanwhile Mutsuki is doing whatever.
-
Rumor has it chapter 20.
! Seidou is alive
-
! Apparently he's now got white hair and is a half ghoul too. He's been through the same thing as Kaneki! Can't wait to see how twisted he's become.
-
! Poor guy is the new one eyed owl and looks so deranged

ugh the face of terror :ninja:! >Sasaki and Qs are fighting. >Saiko is tagging along behind.
Other investigator noted how Sasaki movement resembles Arima.
Miza is known as Sanmaiba (Three swords). Bikaku user.
Miza slaughtered an investigator with the tripple blades.
Akira is facing Naki. Akira’s quinque is Fueguchi! (From the shape, I think it’s Hinami’s father)
And Hinami is coming to help Naki
Saeki (Torso) beats Kanae up.
Mutsuki runs away but was attacked through his stomach from behind
! Also miza totally reminds me of Jugg from dota -
http://imperialscans.com/read/tokyo-ghoul-re/20-rotational-movement/1
Totally called it. Kinda.
! Mutsuki still can't escape being a damsel in distress, despite switching genders. I blame Haise. Bunch of new faces, but, I'd wait till later to see more of them. Hinami vs Akira incoming? Also, trying to feed Mutsuki to Tsukiyama would just totally invite the same problems again, wouldn't it? At least that would mean One-eyed-s are all more tasty, and any of the the Quinques squad would work. (I have a theory…....)
! I was expecting one-eyed Amon, but Seidou? That's a whole new bag of drama right there.–- Update From New Post Merge ---
So I have a theory about the ending or end-solution to Tokyo Ghoul. This is only if Ishida is going for a world peace ending, where humans and ghouls peacefully coexist. It might not happen, the series could possibly end on another tragedy or just Kaneki living his own life as best as possible (The fool's journey). But I have an idea that could possibly work out, both world peace wise and Kaneki-development wise.
! See, it's been implied that Half-Ghouls are tastier than regular ghouls. First with Tsukiyama's obsession over Kaneki's scent and taste. This factors in later, but overall, what if half-ghouls were the key to peace between the two species? The solution is infact a practical one. See, half ghouls could act as a "peaceful" food supply, if a significant amount of the population is half-ghoul. Half ghouls could have regeneration abilities, so larger chunks of meat could be distributed with less negative impact on the "donor". The half human aspect could work around the side effect of Ghouls going insane from cannibalism. Aside from cross-breeding, both the CCG and Aogiri Tree have both experimented with cross breeds, and a stable dieting system could be worked out, if it wasn't for all the war and combat.
! How does this connect to Kaneki? Well, he's always been about protecting and saving his friends/ loved ones. Instead of taking, he gave. He turned away from that philosophy, and we got psycho ghoul Kaneki. Of course being a doormat wasn't ideal either, but acting as a food donor could finally be his answer to his philosophy on his life.
Might not be correct, but this is the best idea I've ever had. -
Takizawa is the new Owl…Okay.
Now, what the hell was Saiko doing? -
Holy shit this chapter. Takizawa. Tooru. What the fuck.
-
So. Many. Japanese. Names.
-
I forgot who Takizawa was and when I google'd the name I felt real sad. Poor guy. D:
-
Yes he had one of the most pitiful death in the serie.
Hopefully in his new ghoul life he will be able to compete with Akira. This will be a shock for her…or not.
I already had doubts, but now I think it's safe to assume that Amon will be back. -
I feel sad for Akira, too. It's one of those things that, "ooh she's so cool" at first, but she might be going down the path of her father. Also the 13 with the blood of Tooru. 13 in Tarot is Death, which can mean rebirth, regeneration, transition to a new state. She's injured the same way Kaneki was. So, uh, probably Kagune time with her/him.
-
In a ethical way, should we address Tooru as him or her?
-
I have no idea how that works.
