I'm a huge fan of people voluntarily forgetting about Franky, Usopp and Sanji's thrashing. Even Robin ended up pretty f*cked up. Or how Jiolla single-handedly messed up with 3 strawhats without breaking a sweat.
Or how Luffy has had his ass handed to him not one, nor twice, but three times already by Doffy and, in fact? For a while people said how weak Luffy was and that if this was his level, good luck facing Yonkous if that was all he could do. Kind of ironic, in retrospect.
But, lo and behold, Zoro is the only one that's gonna leave the arc unscathed (and he deserved a break after being the biggest blood donor in the East Blue and the Grand Line), and this isn't how the New World was supposed to be, where're the worthy opponents, ad nauseaum et infinitum.
Now, I'm not stupid or blind, I know fully well where these complaints come from, they come from Oda's execution, specially of the climax and the succession of officers being defeated by the chapter. That's why people already signed off the Family as a bunch of weak-sauces, even going as far as putting them at the NFP level. It's in the execution, and it is indeed kinda flawed, possibly formulaic. . .even though Oda has used formulas since day 1 in his manga. The only difference between the way officers have been dealt with and, say, CP9 or BW's agents got offed is just a matter of "time". They got longer fights. But the structure was exactly the same, going one by one in a determinate order, usually leaving Zoro the last fight before it's Luffy's turn to fight the big baddie.
This has been One Piece's arc structure for a while, but here we got 1-tons of characters trying to find their much deserved panel time, 2- less panel time to be shared, 3- secondary characters we just recently met fighting foes that usually went to the rest of the SH's that, this time around, aren't here. This is this arc's variation. And all put together might, and probably DID mess up the overall perception we got from the villain's threat level.
But, again, just remember the way the SH's have been performing during the arc (it also doesn't hurt to go back to those chapter threads and read complaints like Franky being a weakling cause "he couldn't deal with 3 OFFICERS, A VICE ADMIRAL AND 100 MARINES ON HIS OWN", which happened) and how most of them except for Zoro have dealt with either severe injuries or complete defeat at the hands of tricky DF's (Sugar, Giolla).
@Razh:
Not much of a fan of 9 mountains and 8 seas crap. I liked Zoro better when he wasn't a poet.
Zoro's been doing that for a while. He did it before 36 pound cannon, 108 pound cannon and Rashomon, off the top of my head. Probably even more I can't remember right now.
It's buddhist stuff Oda has Zoro recite at random times before unleashing an attack.
