Some people are always negative, about everything. And with some shows like Doctor Who epecially, (which frequently changes its tone and what it is… it's been a lot of different shows over the years) once you realize there's an element you don't like of the current run and you've latched onto it, you start seeing it everywhere you look and end up spouting "See, this show is just full of the thing I don't like!" cause you're actively looking for it.
Aside from the REALLY bad science in the tree episode, (Fake science is fine to be dumb. Real science is less so.) I've really enjoyed this season, it's been very solid.
I still don't like Capaldi as much as Smith, and I probably never will. That's fine, I also don't like Tom Baker as much as Pertwee, even though I freely admit Baker had the best stories. The doctor changes, and some embody things you like better than others.
And yes, its easier to complain about the bad than to gush about the good. So... here's some good.
! A GREAT first table setting episode to the finale. Loved it throughout. Started strong with the Doctor and Clara threat scenes, Danny's death, and the result of that. The volcano scene was especially tense, though I'd cottoned onto the fact the Doc was prepared somehow for her about to do something nuts.
! The Nethersphere scene's kept me guessing, and the whole Dark Water (only bio matter can be seen in it) thing….GENIUS as a surprise reveal to the Cybermen who's metal wouldn't show while the water was present. Also, their containers...TOMB OF THE CYBERMEN anyone? Genius Moffat, sheer genius!
! I loved the existential uneasiness. Death can come at any time. Life can change at any time when a loved one dies. Death might not be death ... and might actually be worse. Clara can betray her best friend because she is a 'mass of chemicals'. Timelords can become timeladies. All these untrustworthy bodies.
! And its good to see the creepiness of the cybermen back. Finally! Cybermen stories really lurch from the few gems to the many clunkers. This helps validate their place as important Doctor Who villains. Someone finally remembered, after a few seasons, 'That's right, cybermen are all about body horror ...'
! With this and 'Listen', Moffat has really been giving it 110% and proving why, long after 'Blink', he still deserves to be holding the reins. This season has had several gems, with 'Flatline' being another classic, 'Mummy' being solid, 'Sherwood' being a good comedy episode, and so on. (I rewatched it after getting used to Capaldi. It sat much better a second time.)
@RuNa:
I've said this before in regards to other sections (Naruto, HxH) but it is now even very prevalent in the One Piece sections.
Well, Naruto will be done next week, for better or worse. And HxH we're generally positive about… while it's actually running.
