Happening Roll #41: 939, Recruit
"So is this village under Marine control?" Walter asked, looking around.
"Yes." Lynn replied. "But the units are spread thin, so no marines are actually stationed on the island."
Kevin kicked a rock on the dirt path in front of him. "Looks like a ratty, beat up place to me."
"Hush," Lynn glared at him, "We'll see if they have any supplies for us. If not, we'll move on."
Just then a group of children came running out of a house. One of them, not watching where he was going, bumped into Chaeffer. He fell to the ground, startled.
"Oops, sorry." Chaeffer said. "Are you okay, buddy?"
The boy said nothing, getting up quickly and running away.
"What's up with that?" Chaeffer scratched his head.
"Don't worry about them. They're not very trusting of marines, or anyone really."
The group turned to a woman who was standing in the doorway. "Not often marines actually land on this island."
She surveyed the group, quickly fixating on one of them. "Kevin!"
"Sir, good to see you." Kevin replied. "So this is where you ended up."
"Please Kevin, I'm not your superior anymore. You can call me Maria."
Kevin turned to the group. "Maria was the former captain of my old unit."
"Old unit? Were you transferred, Kevin?"
Kevin looked back at Maria, then at the ground. "I'm afraid their dead."
"Oh. I'm sorry to hear that."
Lynn walked up to Maria. "I'm Vice Admiral Lynn Wenright. Are you stationed here?"
Maria smiled. "Oh no, I'm not officially with the Marines anymore. I decided that the people here needed my help and protection, more than the Marines needed me. If the Marines were too busy to take care of this island, I would try myself."
Lynn looked around, and thought about what Maria was saying. It wasn't something she liked thinking about, but the truth was that there were more people in the world than there were Marines to protect them. And run down towns like this exemplified that. Lynn stared for a few seconds before her thoughts were interrupted by Maria.
"So I assume you are looking for supplies? I'm sorry, but I don't think there's anything we can offer you."
Kevin spoke up quickly. "Maria, you should come with us."
Maria raised her eyebrow. "I couldn't just leave these people."
"Yeah!" Chaeffer put in. "She needs to stay and help the children."
"Plus," Walter put in, "as she is no longer a Marine, she is not authorized to travel with us."
Kevin gritted his teeth. Then Lynn spoke. "I'm gonna put in a call when we get back to ship. See about getting a unit stationed here."
"Really? You'd do that?" Maria said, surprised.
"These people deserve better, and it's our job as marines to give it to them." Lynn turned to Maria and smiled. "We'd love to have you join us as well. In an unofficial capacity of course."
Maria looked at the town around her, then at the sky. "Well, I suppose I could stand to get out and travel a bit."
"Great, it's settled then."
Walter came up next to Lynn. "you do realize Winger is probably gonna rat you out, right?"
"I really don't give a damn what he does. I run my ship how I want."
