What ratio of gin to vermouth is ideal, and why? Comments, critiques and recipes are welcome.
The cocktail thread formerly known as Martinis

In my experience, it totally depends on what you're in the mood for.
Sometimes, I just really want to get wasted. Dry's the way to go in this case, real light on the vermouth (only a splash, maybe a 1:5 ratio with gin). Olives are my favorite garnish with this and I think that they really help to reduce the alcohol-y flavor. This is not a tasty beverage for the uninitiated, but it will grow on you.
IMO, a better flavor can be achieved with a wetter recipe. In this case, you want to shoot for closer to a 1:4 ratio, maybe 1:3.5. Best to taste as you go since YMMV depending on the liquor you're using.
I've also found that adding a little salt can really help a drink that tastes too bitter. Adding a splash of olive brine to make a dirty martini can do wonders when you're working with cheap stuff.
-
Thanks. I drink gin straight more often than in a martini, so 1:4 might be better than the 1:1 I've been mixing.
-
My poison is the Vodka Martini. A little drier than the usual recipe demands.
Can we expand this and make it a general cocktail thread? With people's favourites and recipes?
I am VERY partial to the White Russian myself.
-

Go for it .
-
I also like a good vodka martini. Usually I make these a little dirtier, but that's only because I can't stand the straight flavor of most vodkas that I've had. Properly chilled, though, they can be delicious.
My favorite beverage? This is going to sound really not classy, but have any of you been to Las Vegas and tried Fat Tuesdays?
Lately, I haven't really been mixing drinks as much as just having beer/wine on occasion. I love a good islay scotch whiskey.
White Russians and Caucasians are really dangerous. I've made them with heavy cream and/or half and half, as you should because it's freaking amazing, but then I can't drink more than a couple before my stomach starts acting up. Perhaps I need to take them with more food or something.
-
There we go. One cocktail thread ordered and delivered.
Now to get back on topic. White russians are totally the best huh?
It's probably what i'm most likely to order on a night out if i'm not drinking beer or wine.
-
Re: Fat Tuesdays
That looks delicious. As long as it doesn't contain banana flavored rum. I swore that off New Year's Day of 2004, after New Year's Eve being a drunken mess.
-
About martini, I'd swear for a 6:1 ratio, provided that you have a good italian vermouth, otherwise it's not worth the trouble, really. Oh, and a green olive, of course. And please, be sure to properly cool down the glass, before mixing anything in it.
-
I'm in the land of Glorious Rum, so that's my drink. Society norms say that I should love Scotch and as a able body male that or beer is the only thing that I should drink, but fuck that. Fruity drinks and Baileys rules, scotch isn't a drink for ALL ocations.
Seriously, "Lunch-Scotch" "Diner-Scotch" "Beach-Scotch" "Mountain-Scotch" "Weeding-Scotch". It's more a thing of status than actualy enjoying a drink.
-
This is not the innuendo thread I was looking for.
-
Keep the Mojitos coming, and I'll be a pretty happy lady~ Virgin Mojito is pretty good too~ So tasty! :3 The other cocktail I enjoy a lot, is Pina Colada but with very little amount of rum. Had some terrible Pina Coladas that you could only taste the rum :U Meuh!
-
All aboard the rum train here too. Can't stand most gin although I still drink Pimms in summer because it's like a requirement or something and it's really fruity :D
I'm basically partial to any drink that tastes like a dessert.
-

This so much! XD Which is why Baileys on the rocks is my biggest alcoholic love~
-
The only spirit I own is Malibu XD
but then I don't drink that often.
-
Ok try this Print: 1/4 of the glass Malibu, 2/4 Pineapple juice and 1/4 Coconut cream~ It's yum! If you want top with a bit of whipped cream (yes, I am nuts)
I usually use this type of glasses btw:

http://www.foodservicedirect.com/productimages/OT426897S.jpgI've had Malibu and pineapple juice before but not with coconut cream! Does sound interesting, thanks for the tip :)
Taste of summer -
Taste of Summer~ I like the sound of that! :D Though it sounds like it'd be more like… watermelon pulp, strawberry juice, mint, a dash of rum and crushed ice to me~ Damn, I need to try making this when watermelons are out! It sounds yummy o.o
-
I like vodka with Sprite.

I think we have the same taste in drinks - that sounds amazing! XD
Let me know how it goes. -

While I agree that you don't have to drink scotch and only scotch to be a man, I think you couldn't be more wrong with this statement.

Sounds like how I spent a good month of my life back when I was maybe 24. Hahaha… Don't knock it 'til you've tried it. Scotch is a way of life, man.

Mojitos are excellent as well. Got to muddle the mint. It's all in the muddling.
I think my personal favorite liquor is tequila. Any tequila drink will make my tongue sing. I love a good Margarita, but none of that weak sugary stuff. Natural ingredients all the way.
-
Baileys is far far far too sweet for me. A tiny little snifter of it and i've gotten my daily amount of sugar.
-
Scotch is definitely my drink of choice. I wasn't particularly familiar with the different associations of society to certain types of alcohol, but hey it just happened to fit.
-
Rum, Gin, Whisky, Vodka, Tequila, Punsch and all manner of sweet liqueur are all good.
They each have a thing they're great for. Like you wouldn't have rum with your pea soup, that shit is reserved for the glorious Punch.
And you wouldn't get falling of your chair drunk off of some good Whisky, but you sure as hell would with some Tequila.

I'm pretty sure you can get falling off your chair drunk on any liquor you want, I just don't know if it would be a particularly pleasant experience with some.
I've gotten pretty smashed off of whiskey/scotch, but that's usually when I have a drinking partner or two, and a campfire. I just realized that I might be offending some of the Scotsmen out there who insist on the use of "whisky". Please forgive my ignorance, hah.
So no one has really tried Fat Tuesdays? I highly recommend it if you ever see one. Go for the extra shot, it is totally worth it. I would say something else on topic but I can't think of anything at the moment.
-
This. Was hands down my favorite cocktail. From a Argentinian restaurant in Tacoma, Wa called Asado. Had it on my 30th birthday. It burned soooo good.
DIABLO MARTINI
Habanera Infused Vodka, Passion Fruit Puree, Pineapple Juice and Grenadine… -
I don't know why but I am still stuck to the traditional LIIT when it comes to cocktails. If I really want to get happily sloshed on a Friday or Saturday night with no hangover and only with cocktails, LIIT would be my first choice.
Apart from that, I had an absinthe cocktail(Absinthe Sazarac or something no idea!) in a bar not too long ago. That was pretty AWESOME! If someone could suggest me some absinthe cocktails it would be great
-

I dunno if i've ever chugged Whisky. I've gotten drunk of Whisky drinks from time to time.
But when i drink it pure i'd prefer to take my time and relax.

I think Scotch is a pretty established international term for Scottish Whisky. I just prefer not to use it because it sounds weird to my ears.
But that's probably just due to me having grown up on it being called Whisky.

I went to vietnam and sat at this random bar. Turned out they had the best cocktail i had ever tasted. The name is Brainstorm and its basically Cointreau mixed with Amaretto and pineapple juice. Jesus it was amazing i had 3 of em back to back. Too bad i couldnt find amaretto here :(
-
No amaretto?! What benighted corner of the earth-er, I mean, why not?
Amaretto is great! What? Just because I drink gin or bourbon straight doesn't mean that I can't like sweet liquors.
-
I'm not normally a big fan of whisk(e)y but I really love Islay whisky. Had the pleasure of being curled up on a couch in a cottage in the Scottish hills surrounded by friends in front of an open fire, and we shared a bottle of Islay peaty whisky and it tasted like warmth and love.
I like absinthe but I can't tell if that's just because I adore art nouveau.

Add it to mulled wine. That's how we did winters up in Schleswig-Holstein, and it tastes like a kiss from Christmas.
-
In my own benighted corner of the earth, I can't seem to find any passion fruit. 'Twould be something to try mixed with plum wine. Of course, my pancreas is kicking me at the very thought.
-
Bourbon i get, but drinking just a glass of Gin seems pretty awful.
On it's own it's got this kinda medicine like taste.
-
i cant mix vodka and tequila
it does not play together well in my tummy
-
You shouldn't really mix Tequila with life either. They don't play nice.
-
Of all drinks that I hear brings out the craziest in people, tequila probably tops the list by a mile.
-
So, what does it say about me that it's my favorite liquor? LOL
-
That you probably have alot of amusing this one time i woke up in X stories?
Unless you meant it as you sipping on lots of Margaritas
-
Honestly, I don't think that I've ever blacked out. And I drink the stuff straight. It's one of the only hard liquors that I can do that with without screwing up my face.
It's better with salt and lime, though. And I definitely love me a good marg.
-
The only thing I liked to do in the course of gastronomy was a class where each student had to invent a drink.
I "invented" a drink that mixes run, milk, grated coconut and condensed milk. Everyone liked it and I got a 10.
Normally I drink gin tonic when I go out with my friends. But it does not mean I don´t drink other things.
-
Regular rum or coconut flavored rum?
-

Print, you've got excellent taste for a lady (I really hope I'm not wrong on your gender, lol).
Most girls I know can't stand scotch, much less an islay. It's all about the peat! And they're so smokey, too.And absinthe. Wowza that stuff will knock you off your feet.

Coconut flavored rum, of course.
-
@Print Error: I'd like to try absinthe just once, but the cheapest I've seen it locally is $65 a bottle. Is it a bitter or sour spirit? I'm guessing bitter, but I really don't know.
@Captain Ugly: Sounds good!
-
Absinthe tasted like Fennel. I've tried the green absinthe. Don't know if i wanted to try the black one. It's illegal in my country
-
I've only had green, myself. Didn't know that the black kind existed.
-
It's really annoying when bars don't prepare absinthe the proper way. It requires the right kit with sugar cubes and spoons with holes. If done the proper way, you won't be getting the bitter taste that very much.
The reason absinthe is banned is not just due to its high alcohol content but it causes hallucinations IF prepared the right way. Thoroughly enjoyable one IMO
-

Heehee, nope, you're right! And it's the smokey flavour that makes it so good. Regular whisky just has that 'standard strong liquour' taste that I can take or leave. But then I am someone who drinks lapsang souchong.
As for the absinthe, I've not had it often! A few times at a canalside bar in Manchester. Mostly evaporates on your tongue, but has a very strong herbal taste that reminded me a bit of the aniseed liquours - ouzo, sambuca, and so on. But basically I just want to be a pretentious French artist in the 1890s.
-
Has anyone tried Everclear cocktails? I have tried one which had Everclear, Bacardi 151 and some others. Ended up blacking out big time. It had a really intimidating name too.

No it doesn't, it's been proven time and time again that there is nothing in Absinth that makes you hallucinate.
Unless of course preparing it properly entails adding drugs to it lol. It's one of those myths that just won't go away.
