From the reviews alone I'm expecting/hoping the movie to be good (thanks though for the reassurance), and expecting it to be different from the manga. I'm just wondering if good reviews alone could help the movie not be a financial failure since the movie trailers/concept has a lot of things going against it from succeeding box office wise.

I think the movie will do fine. They mainstreamed it enough for it to be digestible for the general audience. It was actually pretty impressive how with smart editing and script-writing, they pulled out a pretty solid three-act structured story. The ending was a bit of a cop out that made no goddamn sense (kinda like Oblivion) but other than that, I thought it was a pretty good movie.

I skimmed through the first chapter of the manga adaptation recently and I gotta say I don't know if I like the supposed badass rita the way obata drew her. She looks kinda scrawny and shy, doesn't come of as a badass fighter. Emily Blunt fits this role much better just judging by the trailer. Although I don't know how the original charactrer is written in the novel.

Just read the final chapter is this today. I really enjoyed this Manga and wish it had gone on longer, even though it was based off a novel. Somethings are best kept short though.

Does this have a chance to be made into anime?
Like just 1 season 13 episodes? -

They can go all Suzumiya Haruhi season 2 :ninja:
Maybe a feature length anime then?

Endless eight was a masterpiece the more I think of it haha.
The makers actually made the audience feel like the Kyon in the anime.Frustrated uncertain confused krazed

@Kaizou:
I don't get that part.
The feature length depends on the success of the movie. If it does get an anime, then I think OVA sounds more suitable for this series.
What is an OVA?
Well there is an anime Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi.
In its second season there was an arc called endless eight.
It was about the characters repeating their summer vacation over and over until the heroine was satisfied with how they spent their summer.
So for eight episodes they basically repeated the same thing.
Probably the reason why suzumiya is never getting a third season. But I'm hopeful.–- Update From New Post Merge ---
If my memory is correct the season had eight repeated episodes out of thirteen.

So to clarify my point was that since this has similar themes of time loop repeating over and over, it could perhaps follow the footsteps of the great Endless Eight lololol

@Kaizou:
So not quite a series and also not quite a feature length?
Hope it happens for this then.Is there a great OVA out there thats regarded as a masterpiece?
Or could you recommend me one :-) -
If you don't mind over the top violence and cool action you could try the 10 ova series adaptation of hellsing. It's called Hellsing Ultimate. I also highly recommend The Garden of Sinners or Kara no Kyoukai. 7 part ova or pretty much 7 part 50 min movie series from the same studio who did fate/zero for example. It is a really good supernatural mystery thriller. As per usual the animation from ufotable is fantastic.

Speaking of Hellsing. I have read boatloads of everything, but haven't tried the Hellsing manga. Worth a read?
-
I personally didn't read it myself, just watched the ovas. But since the ovas are following the 10 volumes, and very close I think at that. I'm pretty sure the manga is very much worth reading, since the ultimate adaptation was awesome. And by reading the manga you get to see the amazing artstyle of hirano.^^

TLC was right. There's definitely familiar elements, but Edge of Tomorrow is pretty loosely based on the story, or at least the manga story.
Worldwide the movie might be able to make its budget back, but this doesn't seem to be doing that well in the US which was what I feared/expected. I'd suggest to anyone to go out and watch the film, but don't expect to watch the manga translated into the big screen. Definitely the funnest movie I've seen all year.

Yes, read it immediately! One of my first mangas that I read, and an old favorite. And it's quite short… maybe 10 volumes or so.

The last volumes are amazing, the starting ones not so much.
I think Drifters is better overall.

So just how different is the film from the original story? Like, is the ending in the original just as nonsensical and lame? (I actually really liked the film up until then)

I heard the film was pretty good, but the ending was different.

If you want to know.
! At the end of the book, As Rita and Kenji are fighting the mimics that launched a suprise attack on the base, they kill them all, and Rita states to Kenji that due to the loops and headaches they have both become antennas (basically the mimics that force the loops to start or something like that), one of them has to die in order to stop the loops. They battle and since Kenji has watched Rita fight 150+ times he overpowers her, and in her final moments holds his hand and he tells her he loves her. Ending is Kenji now out of the loop and war hero, with now painted sky blue jacket, and leading the mimic war front. Never saw the movie but I think she lives somehow when the loop ends, but still had to die, so I don't know how she is alive

I keep getting told by people to see the movie. Maybe I should start with the manga first? Maybe see the movie and then go back and read the manga so I'm not raging at the screen about how they changed stuff? Anybody have a suggestion for what I should do here?

Extremely Yes. The OVA series is a good way to get the story as well, just make sure you're watching the Blu-ray versions of episodes 1-5. ESPECIALLY OVA I. When it was re-released it was completely redone for the better.
Also, if you do read the manga… Hirano is an amazing artist... later on. For the first two volumes his art can get... extremely derpy at times. There's one shot in the Anderson fight in volume 1 where Alucard's face looks... like a potato... Otherwise it's amazing.
-
I would suggest movie first, or if you read the manga to not go into the movie expecting it to have the same tone. It's a very different take on the material.
Think both are very enjoyable though. The movie is much more comedic action blockbuster in a good way while the manga is more solemn and works as a action/drama.

What kinda irks me about the manga is how weak the female lead looks. So thin and fragile that it is hard for me to take her as a badass compared to the movie actress. But that is just how obata chose to draw her and all the other characters for that matter.
