@Jazzy:
Yeah, if you want to get added to the conference then get on Skype and friend me.
Look for "KennyT0723" and I'll have a Shantae avatar.
Kinda tired through. I'll add you up before I knock it

Evening conference in 15 minutes.
[hide]It was just another a cold summer night in the middle of winter, within the dry marshlands of Ekaboo. Another night where residents of marshlands gazed in awe at the sight of what was considered the oddest pair. They laid an owl minding its own business out in the open talking to a rat. "How long are you going to keep sitting on that thing for", the rat said while shrugging its shoulders.
The owl gazed at the mouse, and then proceed to turn its had one hundred and eighty degrees before replying in a voice shriveled in dread, "Until it dies." The owl's eyes gazed into the bushes attentively, when suddenly a wild hyena pounced out. The owl flew away, as if it foresaw this all happening. It perched in the nearest tree, tilting its head inattentively like a owl would usually do.
"You are really bad at this cat thing. That has to have been the worst pounce I ever seen!", the mouse criticized towards the dumb looking hayena. The hyena laughed excessively as the mouse slowly walked away. There on the dirt where the owl was originally sitting was an egg, laid perfectly perched with the larger portion of it laying on the ground.
The egg then talked. "What took you so long!? That damned bird keeps sitting on me!", said the egg. The egg talked, even though it had to mouth.
"Hyahaha! I wished more burds tied to sweep own my head! Easter to eat, ya know?", replied the hyena in the most illiterate and almost coherant way.
The egg and the hyena has known eachother for as long as they remember. Two days ago, they met in this same exact spot. Before this fated meeting, the hyena chased another meaty bird that could not really fly. The egg's first word to the hyena after it burped out a feathers was, "Dude, I think that was my mother!" The coyote responded with the "nice" and they have been close friends ever since.
They talked about all the great things that friends would usually do. Like life, death, politics, and the theory behind aerodynamics. Well, the egg did most of the talking. The hyena would just sit there and laugh at the thought of an egg actually talking, like maybe it was all in his head or something.
"My friend, I think my time here is coming to an end.", said the egg in a serious tone. The hynena didn't laugh this time. His friend was being serious, and he felt this in his tone. Deep inside, the hyena knew the egg was just a shell. A frail casing keeping locked away pesonas that are better off seen by those with the greatest amount of trust. The hyena's stomach growled. It was silent because it was just hungry, thus it was not really thinking about anything particularly deep nor sentimental… Like a hyena would usally do.
The egg, thinking about the thought of having eyes and neck, imagined itself looking at the dumb hyena and calmly looking up into the sky. The egg liked imagining things. Despite not having a mind nor the capacity to do so. This pair apparently had quite a bit in common.
At that moment, abruptly... The egg hatched. A small yellow bird was born. If you didn't know follow the emotional backstory, apparently this bird is a chick once belonged to a hen, that now rests within the stomach of the dirty hyena that laid nearby, licking its paw like a cat would usually do. In the distance, the mouse from earlier stared with a palm surfacing on his face. Suddenly the owl that was perched in the tree swooped down, grabbing the disappointed mouse and flew away into the darkness of the marshes. Echoing in the distance, "I wasn't looking! Nooo fairrr..." was heard. The owl and the mouse were never seen for the rest of the story.
The hyena laughed and the misfortune of the mouse, then turned his head toward the chick standing besides the broken egg shell fragments. Still laughing, the Hyena then said, "Wow, you ready dun it tis time!"
The eggshells then responded, "Don't talk to me anymore, I'm dead". Followed by the egg's final words, the chick then abruptly said, "Yeah, he's dead alright". Turning towards the hyena, the chick asked question, "How was mom?"
"She was good," the still hungry hyena said laughing, "She was good".
The End.

I wrote for the exercise. I admit, I didn't have anything particularly orignal.
A mouse! :O :D
Party bread.
That is all.
Better late than never for the assignment. Wheee!
! “Ha! Got a vertical block coming. That's quadruple bonus points for clearing four layers.”“Up yours Bob,” Steve said with a grin. “I'm still ahead by a thirty something points.” His palms tightened over the Gameboy.
“I'm getting closer though. Your “Tetris Master” title will soon be mine. It's been a few years, but I'm finally gonna trump you.”
“You always say that, but we all know how it'll end.” Steve chuckled. But this is getting too close. Sweat gathered along his palms and trickled down his wrist. “You know I'm always going to the boss of Tetris.” His eyes darted along the greenish-yellow screen and followed the falling blocks. Wait, only a minute left?
“Stop shaking so much. You're going to tear off the cable.”
“My bad.” Steve's vision began to blur. The blocks merged into vague blobs. Dammit. He shook his head to draw the sweat from his eyes. When he turned his attention back onto the screen, his weary eyes bulged. The cubes formed an awkward angle a few blocks from the top. Bob grinned.
“Uh oh. Looks like I'm catching up; only a few seconds left old.”
“Hah, still I'm still ahead.”But only by a few points. His jaws tightened.
“Almost there!” Bob bared his teeth. Steve's eyes struggled to follow the blocks darting down the screen. The blocks became a mangled mess, but he was still ahead.
I can make this. Need to stay focused. Keep your eyes on the blocks. Don't get distracted. No. Don't. L block. Okay, now Y block.
“I have you now,” Bob said in a deep, hollow voice.
No. No. No!
“Ah…time's up.” Bob grinned and dropped the gameboy onto the grass. “Finally, I win.” He sighed. “That's...the first after thirty or something wins in a row?” The gameboy fell from Steve's trembling hands. His fingers still tingled from the sensation of furious button mashing.
God dammit. Steve felt a sharp pang spread through his gut. A burning sensation tickled his throat. He closed his eyes and clenched his teeth. I lost...I lost. Lost. Lost. Lost. He glanced upwards to find Bob standing over him with a hand extended towards him.
“C'mon, I owe you a drink.” Bob snatched it. Before he could pull himself up, he heard a harsh crunch beneath his left foot. A shudder trickled down his spine. He lifted his foot to find the shattered remains of Steve's Green gameboy.
“Oh god.” Steve's eyes widened as he brushed Bob aside and crouched besides his crushed handheld console. “Shit!” He attempted to put the pieces together, but failed. The tattered gameboy fell from his trembling hands. Teeth bared, he turned to Bob, grabbed collar with one hand and raised his fist with the other. Bob anticipated the blow and closed his eyes. He waited several seconds, but nothing happened. His eyes peeked open to find Steve lowering his fist and sighing. “Forget it.” Steve chuckled and loosed his grip from Bob's collar.
“Sorry.”
“It's nothing. Besides, the gameboy's an old piece of shit compared to the stuff I got at home.”
“Shit?” Bob's eyes widened. “An old piece of shit? ” He kicked Steve's shin left shin and pushed him against the ground. “Old?” He pummeled Steve's face. Blood squirted out from his nose and gushed out from his gaping mouth. “What do you mean by old?” He slammed his fist into Steve's lower jack, knocking out his front teeth. Steve grasped at Bob's shirt, but the older man brushed his flailing arms. “I'll show you what an old piece of shit can do.” He snatched a pencil from his shirt pocket and shoved it into Steve's left eye. The young boy screamed. His free hands clawed at his ruined face.
“Please. Stop.” Bob lowered his fists and smiled.
“So what is it you were saying about old shit?”
TETRIS!

Well that went morbidly quickly enough :O
great to see you guys! And I don't go by 'leggies'. Makes me feel like a creepy crawlie
nope you're leggies now
Right…I've changed my name to suit it! It's not too late to regret
I have a confession to make…I am madly in love with Holy...she can glop on me anytime :ninja:
One of these is happening next month, right?
~~Yep.~
I'll edit this post later with the details. I'm going to do three more conferences, one for each coming month, and then stop doing them indefinitely after December. From there, someone else can take over (either an organizer or a committed member) or alternatively, you guys could let this thing die.
Depends on what you all want.~~~
Hey guys, sorry about my superinactivity but I've been really busy as I've just started my Erasmus semester~. But when things settle down I'll (try to) start contributing. :)
Change of plans. I'm stepping down from this as well.
I look forward to seeing how you guys revive and maintain this thing in my absence. I've enjoyed my time here and I sincerely appreciate all the patience and willingness to participate I've been shown over the short history of this thing. I can honestly say that some of the best conversations I've ever had were had in these writing conferences.
If you guys ever need me, give me a ring. Otherwise, ce la vie.~
it's "c'est la vie" :p
Thanks for all the awesome conferences~ They were really good fun, and I've already learned so much from them too!
And I missed it in September hahaha.
Although I'm not much of a writer, I wanna give it a go running one of these with a new angle. I'd honestly hate to see such a great thing die out.
First of foremost. Timing. I don't really think it matters how many people attends a conference. For better or worse, picking a preferable day and seeing how it works out is the best bet. It's just kinda impossible to expect alot of people to be there at a certain time. I think we kinda already do this, but we just should never ever feel bad for not being able to make it on days we appoint.
Secondly, my concern with the Skype Group. It's more of an annoyance than a convenience, mainly due to the influx of notifications. I personally think it's fine to have a group for AP members to get together and chat, but it does somewhat get in the way of those that probably do join for the group's intended purpose. If there's notifications, one would expect these notifications to be relevant to writing conferences… so... you know? That way, it's worth checking? I suggest one of two things. Start fresh with a new group and make the current an AP hangout that's open to friends. OR. Vice versa what I already said(keep the current, and make a new AP hangout group). Otherwise, if no one minds, we keep it the same. But do realize that does bring up the possibility of secluding or turning off newcomers.
Lastly. While I could do this alone, I think it would be an interesting dynamic to have alteast 3 people that have very different approaches to running a discussion or activities. Like takes these examples. One person could find benefits in creating a variety of fun assignments to invoke creativity. Another people could have strong interests in something very specific, and present things from that( like general horror, mystery, obscure books/comics/manga and other subjects that did tend to pop up alot in previous conferences). And another person could simply be a storyteller that tells his or her own stories for everyone to hear. These are just ideas on the surface and there's many different directions we can go with this. I just need some hands :)
Lastly, lastly. I don't know how well this would work, but I'm think of making a report or notes of the conferences. Then posting it here, just to somewhat fill people that miss them in on what happened.
So yeah. These are just ideas so far.
One person could find benefits in creating a variety of fun assignments to invoke creativity.
I like these all of your ideas, and I keep hoping I can make it to one of these.
For this specific point though, I do have what I think would be a fun idea. Everyone can post a Location, Time Period, Genre, Plot, and Point of View on here. Then, whomever is running the show would write them all down, cut them up and then draw one of each type at random for each person, and then that's the story the person needs to write.
I did this all the time in writing workshops, and it's a lot of fun and challenges you creatively. My favorite mashup I ever got was: Taiwan, 1960's, Historical Fiction, Heist, Second Person.
That is the most challenging piece of fiction I've ever had to write, and even though it only turned out decent, it was a ton of fun.
So yeah, there's an idea some people may be open too.
All sounds good to me. I think the idea of having a separate convo specifically for the writing conferences is a good idea, basically for the reasons stated; it doesn't bother me at all to have all those notifications or anything, nor should it really bother anyone (you can just turn them off >_>) but a separate one would allow for putting in "important" things in there and having them stay visible etc. Plus the whole thing about being a welcoming environment for anyone new joining in.

Heheh! Thanks for the responses. I'm not attempting to make immediate action until everyone is more informed or comfortable with the ideas, but yeah :)

I like this idea. Sounds like one of those assignments that are planned specifically to be presented ahead of time. Unless everyone that does get it can write it during the conference. Or maybe it could be homework. But I don't know. You tell me how it can work within a conference.
I had this one idea for an activity, and it might be a little goofy. Like we have 6 or so paragraphs. On each paragraph, all that's written is the first three words and the last three words. Additionally, we have the names of 3 or more characters without any description for who they are. The objective here would be to give everyone that wants to partake a paragraph, and then tell them to fill in the blanks using the named characters. Finally, we combine the results to see what kind of oddball scenario would unfold when it's read in sequence.
I'll help. :) My schedule's a little more demanding these days but I'd love to keep this thing going.
Alright guys. Upon discussing a day to do this, we are going with the first Saturday in November. So. November 1st.
8:00 PM Eastern.
As for a possible topic. Since it's post-Halloween, let's talk heavily about horror. I've noticed that we do have quite a bit of fans within the genre, so it might be alot of fun.
Things we will cover.
-What does horror mean to you?
-What immerses you within a horror setting?
-What can any good author do to hook someone that's typically not phased by horror? (like say, this person uses "never being scared" as a reason to berate a horror story)
-Volunteer Speaker Question: Share two stories. One fiction. One non-fiction. What are the differences or similarities that makes each kind of story work? I ask this because I'm personally curious if a story is scarier if it's best left for the imagination, or if it's based off an event(or events) that happened in real life.If anyone wants to volunteer to take the helm at this one, please say so now.
The plan here is to spend around 20-30 minutes on each category. Maybe less depending on how the discussion goes.
As for an activity, here's something really simple!
-Create or describe a terrifying scenario, and make this personal to you. (It does not have to be written, unless you want to. Just remember this is more presentation or a moment for you to chime) It could be an imagined scenario, something based off an event in your life, or it could be a parody or joke. Just be comfortable and confident enough to share one. I won't care if the scenario is really just you being late for work and facing your angry boss either :3
See you guys there! If you are new: My Skype is hiroyvalesti. Add me, and I'll add you to the Writing Session group.
Oh boy! Horror! Something I can actually contribute.
Not sure if I'll be making it. So you guys might have to do without my many enlightened views and suggestions, sorry to dissappoint.
I don't know if it's an oversight in the original plan, but I might have mistaken the first Friday with the first Saturday.
So, it could be either of those. We'll see. If you can't make it, I'll make sure to keep notes of stuff were talked about and share them here(even if the turnout ends up low, haha!)
Edit: Yup. Definitely Saturday
Ohmigosh these topics sound incredibly intriguing…. But I can't make it on either Friday the 1st or Saturday the 2nd of November. :/ An evening session might be possible for me on Friday, but I can't promise that I'll have the energy to stay up. Goddamnit. Oh well, I'll look forward to the report if nothing else!
Ohh I would totally be into a horror discussion but I can't be there the weekend of 1-2-3 November :(
Aw! Well, don't feel too bad about it. We can always do horror again with a completely different agenda(any genre is pretty broad). Here's hoping we could a set a date that's good for most people in the future.
Bumping the thread to remind whoever missed the initial post.

Skype Conference tomorrow. The volunter speaker thing is still open. Otherwise, we can discuss it for a short while before moving on the activity.
Going to start right now. Will edit this with a report after it's over.
If you are going to be there, be there :3
Alright. Now that's it's over, here's a debrief of what occurred. Sai-chan, Kitsune and myself showed up. Pretty small, but I still liked the size. Ironically enough we were all not huge fans of horror, despite me starting the thing specifically for those that like it. Because of this, we had to skip over the volunteer speaker question in the agenda. As for things on the agenda, we actually did stick to the 30 minute plan and we never seemed to run out of things to talk about. Here goes.
[hide]
During the first thing on the list, Sai-chan and Kitsune expressed that horror can be great if it plays on scenarios that plays on fear, rather than those that completely relies on cheap jump scares. To me, horror was about playing with an idea or setting that could be scary, even if it's not actually meant to be. During the course of the last 17 or so minutes, we went over various examples. Mostly films. Like The Others, The Haunting (1999), Poltergeist, and several films that can be considered a sub-genre of horror (psychological thrillers, or kid friendly "horror" movies) like Gravity, Identity, Nightmare before Christmas, Caroline and Paranorman.
Moving on to the second thing on the agenda. We discuss the aspects that immerses us personally in horror films. The main thing we all seemed to came to terms with is going into a horror setting with a complete lack of information. Like, the idea of being completely confused at everything that is occurring and wanting to find an answer. Kitsune mentioned some various cues/techniques that is used in the making of films, like using sound in a way to distract the viewer from the scenario that is being seen on screen. Another technique he mentioned was pointing the camera in directions where the viewer may not see or expect something that may or may not be coming from another angle. This was interesting, since we all seemed to bring up moments in several of the films we bought up before that utilized these techniques.
On the third thing on the agenda, We went around for about 20 minutes. Maybe a little more than that. The basic idea we came to using placing the element of horror in places where the viewer may not expect there to be scary elements in the first place. Our examples were typical. For the first and only time in the conference, we bought up something One Piece related. One Piece Movie 6 specifically. The movie starts off lighthearted and fun, and then takes a complete 180 and becomes something scary. Sai mentioned it becomes a little more messed up on a second viewing since everything was foreshadowed in the beginning before the shift in mood. My example was Mother 3. During the final segment of the game, there's a bunch of bathroom stalls in the a hallway that has rather comedic interactions with enemies and random people that happen to use the bathrooms. Right at the end of this, the game completely shocked me when a monster (A chimera) jumps out of one of the stall and kills me instantly. Kitsune then mentioned a similar experience in a Shadow Hearts game where was was puzzled and and surprised at a scenario that leads to an expected boss battle in a bathroom as well. It involved constantly interacting with the stalls and a mirror that considerably change dialogues and get more confusing when your reflection on the mirror did various actions.
Finally, we moved on the activity to make up various scenarios. This was pretty fun.
-Mine was having the ability to walk on water and being stuck in the middle of the ocean.
-Then we sort of made up scenarios of being stuck in a wide open space being terrifying, like the middle of a desert and maybe floating in empty space and an immortal being.
-To add to that, we talked about the idea of being stuck in a place or alternative dimension where you can see other people, calling for help and none not being able to hear you.
-Other scenarios involved being being crushed in a disclosed place. Or just being stuck in a disclosed space completely alone.
-On the final legs of this specific talk, we mentioned stuff that scared us all as kids. Since these are hilariously personal, I'll keep these out of the notes. Hehehehe!
[/hide]
And so the conference ended. Sai's random terrifying unicorn button aside(don't ask, lol), I believe this was a pretty great conference and I think the new format can work with more people as well. The agenda not only had this sense of organization, but it also showed that there was an ending in sight. So in all, it lasted a total of 2 hours. As for sticking on topic, I think we did great. At most, we chimed in fun things that happened on Halloween and talked about candy(and chocolate >_>) for 6 minutes, and even that wasn't exactly too far off topic. So yeah, I'm actually looking forward to doing this thing again in the future. We are thinking bi-weekly or once a month.
As for ideas for topics we can do in the future, I'm definitely going to do horror agian… with a different agenda of course. But only on a day where one or two people that are really into the genre can make it. If you are one of these people, feel free to suggest a date and time and I'll see what I can do to work with it. That aside, I'm brainstorming some new ones and I'll announce whatever I come up with ahead of time.
Great update, that was interesting to read. Thanks Hiroy! :D
Yeah, thank you so much for the report. :)
And the next conference …
I haven't really came up with an agenda yet, but I do want to do one sometime in December since I'm busy for the rest of the month(next month too, but I'll still try to find time). I'll let you guys know what topic I come up with soon.
Also, in the chat.. You guys mentioned wanting to hav an EU conference to serve those better in that timzone. I still think that's a great idea, but planning the day or agendas isn't on me. You are more than welcome to use my topics and whatnot, but take lead on it if you really do want that to happen.
I'm down for a December EU conference, but I think I could manage an American timezone one aswell.
Who here is from Europe anyway?
@Mrs.:
I'm down for a December EU conference, but I think I could manage an American timezone one aswell.
Who here is from Europe anyway?
Hi. .
Fellow European reporting for duty. o/
I'm also interested in being the host if at some point we manage to organize a EU conference. I'm not the most coherent English speaker, but either way I'd love to try. And if Toraish feels like backing me up then I'd say things are starting to look promising. :)
That makes three so far! Three can be a conference.
I'm kinda sorta partially from Europe, does that count?
Sure it does.~ I'd say that if someone non-European could make the EU conference even despite the timezone difference, they're free to join. :)
Sorry but are you guys starting the thing soon? It's been awhile since we had one of those.
Not before the end of this week. I've got all my course exams now, so a Skype thingy is pretty low on the priority list unfortunately.
Preferably before 21/12 for me, 'cause then I'm going home for Christmas and probably won't have much time for Skyping either.
No date yet(I recently got a job, but no schedule yet), but I have an agenda ready. This time without the volunteer question thing since that was very experimental.
Like usual, each agenda will be covered in 30-40 minutes.Maybe a little more depending on the flow. So if you do attend, please be wary of the amount of people that are there and try to watch the amount of time you spend contributing. That way there's contributions given out by everyone that do want to share. So what's our new subject?
Adaptations. Novel to movie. Movie to Novel. Movie to Game. Basically any sort of story that is adapted towards another media.
Things we will cover
-Are you more or less okay with liberties taken in adaptations? Answer/Discuss this without bringing up any examples, as hard as it may seem. This is intended to ease our way into the other questions :3
-What's a great example of an adaptation in your opinion, and why to you personally feel that way?
-What's a bad example of an adaptation in your opinion, and why do you personally feel that way?
(if we don't go way over 40 minutes in the previous 2 questions since they could possibly go a bit overboard)
-What creative liberties would offend you or not let go if your own work was to be adapted?
Activity: Adapt something.
Take an established story in any media and construct/deconstruct it into a preferred format that matches your creative skills. Be creative and do what you want! Write a short story, draw something, make an animation, direct a 2 minute movie, conduct with wand in front of a big band, build a robot that speaks sign language. I don't care what you do, as long as it's a way to tell a story. Just have fun with it(and don't think too hard about it, or else… well... it won't hurt you to not do it ;)) You are expected to share/present your own work to the group.
And that's about it.
Personal Note
Had a hard time thinking of a new things we can talk about since I'm no way an actual writer. So sorry if my setup leans more towards general creativity. :D Just let me know if this direction is a good or bad thing, thanks!
This is my kind of topic.
Should make for an interesting discussion! I'm in, if available on the set date.
Mixing in other kinds of art can be really interesting, and it's definitely relevant here. I like the idea!
Errr, so I mentioned I wanted to revive this a few times. So now I'm actually going to post something about it.
These things were really helpful to me, and they were always fun, and I think it's a bit of a shame it's fallen by the wayside. So, I'm going to try and pick up the old writing conference, dust it off and give it a shiny new … hat or something.
I was thinking of some ideas for such a conference, but as I'm pretty sure the agenda Hiroy's posted above was never used, we can just use that. It's an interesting, open and welcoming topic, after all.
In any case, I'm aiming for the weekend Saturday 14th - Sunday 15th of June, or thereabouts … If anyone is interested (I'm sure someone is) please post to let me know~ And then we can run with whatever particular day and times are convenient for the most people ^_^
For anyone who's never been to the old ones but would like to come but want to know more (<-- great sentence), probably go read the first post, because I'm hopeless at explaining things in an engaging way.
If this happens, I'll actually be audible this time! Not that that's any kind of bribe or motivation; nobody wants to hear my whiny voice but …
Normally, I would definitely be there, but I have a family event that weekend. Sorry…
I would love if this were revived though. Even if I'm not there, it would make me happy if it all managed to come together.
