I've recently started reading this series and I like it more and more as time goes by. Part of it is that it's a uniquely Japanese take on a uniquely American sport, but a larger part of it is the sheer hilarity of watching Hiruma destroy any obstacles in his path. His video response to the American coach is one of the funniest things that I've seen in a long time. I really don't know of any series with this many characters where one person completely dominates everything that happens to the extent that Hiruma does.

It's a weird series, largely because I can't remember the names of most of the cast. See, while I have a vague notion that one of the characters is named Sena and another is named Kurita, my brain almost automatically substitutes their nicknames instead.

i started the anime and never read the manga, so i'll wait a few eps to judge it, but it's true that hiruma (if he's the bad boy leader of the team, i don't know his name) looks like a very good character. as a lot of people like the manga, i think i'll like it too.

I actually like this manga because it's a very original idea for a manga or any comic period. It does it in a way thats not very jockish but still jockish at the same time. Very cool.

Sorry to dig to the back of the forum, but Gamespot just came out with a preview of an Eyeshield 21 game for the Nintendo DS here: http://www.gamespot.com/ds/sports/eyeshield21/news.html?sid=6146534. If this game makes it over to the U.S., it could be another reason for me to buy that handheld.

Also, as an athlete, I really appreciate the way Eyeshield 21 makes the characters struggle so hard to achieve their goals. Manta and Sena in particular are determined and resilient and, at the risk of sounding like a bigger than usual dork, I get inspired by their actions. Not to mention that I can get a pretty good runner's high going if I play "Breakthrough" in my head for the last half-mile of a cross-country race or a track event.

that game has been out for a while. It isnt that good because it is basically a point and click kind of thing because your only tapping the screen after being given a prompt, so there is no real game play to speak of. It is better than the ps2 game tho

Eyeshield 21 is probably the only sports manga I actively collect, a perfect combination of the teamwork cliches with fun characters, wild designs (though they don't show up in the American versions I collect, even the chapter pages in the Japanese manga are a sight to behold) and great comedic moments to balance out the sports drama.

(personally, though, while I rather just stick with the American version since that's what I started with, I really want to get the "Ballers High" book that recently came out in Japan as sort of a "scouting report" for some of the later teams and such in the series.)

I agree…although I think Kurita is the best.^^ He's like...the only fat main character who is actually great (and sooner or later among the best) at what he does...that's SO unlike any other shounen manga (well...One Piece does feature weird characters like Usopp, so I say that counts as well and Naruto does have Chouji, although he's a side-side-character or something). In other manga the "best" only consist of spikey-hair-boys (Naruto, Ichigo etc.) and boring "I'm so hot"-stereotype boys (Byakuya, Sasuke, I think everybody from Prince of Tennis).
Also, what I love about Eyeshield, it doesn't try to be uber-cool. It sometimes is very stupid, but in the same loveable way One Piece or Yakitate!! Japan are.

Oh man, this match against Shinryuuji is turning into a depressing match. You thought the matches against Poseidon or Wild Gunmans was tough? It has nothing compared to this.

Actually that is the one thing that's miffing me right now. Agon is just too dues ex machina powerful. He's already shown that he's smarter than Hiruma (apparently), stronger than Kurita, and faster than Sena. That's just . . . . . cheesy.

I wish some of these damn scanslating groups would at least speed up so we can be close to caught up with Japan.

Well, so far it's only one play. The Dragonfly, which is a combo he does with his twin brother Usui. (whom he calls unko-chan. What a jerk) The play basically consists of the brothers both playing quarterback and constantly passing the ball to each other so you can't be sure which one has the ball. Or something like that.

The ONE thing the Devilbats have been counting on is that hopefully Agon will run out of stamina, because apparently he never trains or practices. But even Hiruma is starting to think it's over.

One good thing about Agon is that he has managed to make Sena do something that has never happened in the past. He pissed Sena off. We've never seen Sena get really pissed, but now he is PISSED-OFF. Because Agon ridiculed Hiruma, Musashi, and Kurita's dream of the Christmas Bowl.

Man, Agon is such an exaggeration. Then again, pretty much everyone in Eyeshield is super-exaggerated, which is why it's so fun. But Agon... in that one little encounter he managed to really piss me off, I bet if I was caught up I'd be pretty mad.

Because I'm such a big Natsuhiko fan... how's he doing in the game? Anything notable or profound?

Well, because of him Shinryuuji Naaga's got a safety! Ahaaaha!
But it would have been better if they got a safety then a touchdown so he deserves SOME kinda credit.

I feel kinda weird that the match has passed about 6-7 chapters and it's almost half-time....maybe the match will end for about 10 chapters or such.
That is one thing i like about ES21, important matches involving Deimon Devil Bats doesn't take to long, or to short but i would like to see this match alot longer, since Shinryuuji is the strongest high school team in japan.

PS. I got my copy of ES21 Baller's High and vol.14-17 ( Devil Bats vs. Poseidon -> Devil Bats vs. Wild Gunmans ) so if anyone needs a question about ranking and such then ask me ;)

isnt it the fall tournament? it is either that or the christmas bowl has finally come. I just know there is a tournament in the current manga and the first team that the devilbats have to play is the shinryuuji naga

! The Fall Kantou Tournament is over and Devil Bats got accepted as the 3rd ranking team. ( 1:st - White Knight, 2nd: Wild Gunmans )
In this fall Tokyo can have 3 representatives to the Christmas Bowl so Deimon Devil Bats ( who lost against Wild Gunmans ) had to have a match against Bando Spiders ( Who lost to White Knight ) to be ranked as 3rd.
! If you wonder why Shinryuuji Naaga's wasn't there, here's my thoughts why:
1. They are Kanagawa representives.
2. They were in the Spring tournament where they won against White Knights so they don't need to enter the Fall tournament to get into the Christmas Bowl. ( i think that at that time only one was accepted as representetives )
! Eyeshield 21 is now in their "2nd Series" where the Christmas Bowl arc starts with them against the strongest team, Shinryuuji Naaga.

If you want to know how the teams are sorted in the Tournament:

! The winner from the A-Block will meet the winner from the B-Block, making it the final match of the Christmas Bowl.
! A-Block:
Seibu Wild Gunmans vs. Misaki Wolfes
Taiyou Spinx vs. Hakushuu Dinasours
! B-Block:
Deimon Devil Bats vs. Shinryuuji Naaga
Oujo White Knights vs. Sado Strong Golem

I like and hate Agon at the same time ( like the same way i feel about Cartman :P ), he's a cool character but i hate his disrespectful way of talking to others besides pretty women. ( just to get laid )
I think that next weeks chapter will be one of my favorites because it is where Yukimitsu-kun will shine….i hope, i don't wanna see him get on the field and lose just like that, that would be really worthless.

Yukimitsu-kun has been one of my favorite characters ever since the 2nd series started.....mostly because of his new hairstyle but if he succeeds in something that will surely surprise me then he will probably be my favorite character :) ( Kakei/Hiruma is now my recent favorites )

I also like Unsui in a way more than Agon, he's like the good half.
I think that the coolest pic of him as a mean guy is the cover of the Dragon Fly chapter. ( like a mirror with different halfes )

I still think that Deimon has a chance of winning but then there are higher odds of them losing but with a close point difference, since Deimon is 99% Offense i think that catching up with points has more advantage then preventing them.

I think that Shinryuuji's weakness is just Yukimitsu-kun, even though they don't underestimate them they still don't know anything about Yukimitsu-kun's skills. ( which we will se soon :) )
I still think that Yukimitsu-kun will play as a Quarterback, or as a Wide Reciever since he has something that no one has and can only be used against a strong team.
Lol, Yukimitsu-kun have what Takamura once said that Itagaki doesn't have, unexcpectedabillity~~~~or something, meaning that he does things unexpectedly by his opponents while his teammates knows without being informed.

Still, he has checked Agon since their first offense so i think that he knows how to handle him. :)

PS. I've been thinking, even though Shinryuuji would know that the next kick will be an Onside kick, it's probably the job for the Chibi teams ( Sena, Monta & Komusubi ) do catch the ball while the other in a way prevent the opponents to do it.

"igaisei" 意外性? Yeah.

But then again we don't know what Yukimitsu has or doesn't have because we've never seen him play. He originally wasn't allowed to play simply because he wasn't athletic enough at the time to be put in the roster, but that appears to have changed.

sports anime makes me wanna puke, but eyeshield is different. for the first time in my life, i find a sports anime that is not gay.

it's crazy, how can people be so hyped over e21, when the characters development is for 10yo children. i mean, ok the matches are cool, hiruma rocks, but other than that, it's very very childish. i feel stupid every time i watch this (but keep watching it, though).

The manga is more violent and has more curse words so it's still kinda for younger teens to older.

The anime is more childy-like, what do you expect of an anime that aires like 7:30 in the morning to children :P?
The things i don't like with the anime is:
1. The animations sucks since they came to America.
2. They edit and take out important things in the manga that could have saved them more time instead of doing bad fillers, however some of them would make sense to take out. ( for example during White Knights vs. Shinryuuji Naaga where Agon's true natures shows….however they could have just edited out the blood thing and milder violence. )

But it's also the sport and the graphics in the manga that is very interesting.
The effects and the character developements gives me alot of joy, i also like the newest artwork because it has alot of tension in it. ( try comparing ch.1 with ch.179 and you'll notice the huge difference in art and story )

Another thing that i like about Eyeshield 21 is that the main team isn't really a super strong team at all ( compared to other manga......like Prince of Tennis, and probably Slam Dunk....lol, how good can Rukawa really be :P? ), they grow from a very weak team with some talented players to a B ranked team with alot of different players with their different talent and skills.
So far they have lost to very strong teams but with a short point difference ( well, besides Deimon vs. Oujo 1 because Deimon weren't a "complete" team back then ), it also shows that Deimon grows but is still far away from being uber strong like Shinryuuji Naaga.

Because i always se 7 a clock but i thought it was during the morning….then yes, they shouldn't have made it to child like.....but doesn't that mean that Naruto airs like really late for children?

ahhh the good times. While i was in japan, I remember i saw the episode when they had to climb tokyo tower and then i had to go down to dinner and was flipping through channels when i saw naruto but it was filler.

Yeah, when I heard they took out Apollo's racism I was very disappointed. One of the things that impressed me was how well the author dealt with the issue of American racism . . . . when he's not even American.

When the whole team got down on their hands and knees along with Panther to ask him to be allowed to play . . . . that was just a hell of a moment.

One thing I always thought was interesting was how Apollo's racism is different from what you usually hear about; instead of believing himself to be superior, he was scorned and frustrated that black men were, by nature, atheletically superior to whites.

I can sympathize with him, thouhg (but not to the same extreme as him!): when you work your ass off in a sport only to be completely outshone by people who are naturally good is probably one of the most crushing things in athletics that you can experience.

Now that I think about it, Apollo is one of the more intriguing characters in the series (not that there isn't anyone else that is interesting).

Oh, a question: I've fallen in love with Ikari, the new defensive linesman for Oujou. I was sad to see him disappointed in the Sankaku game; does he get to play later?

Ikari is the psycho guy who's always chained up, right? :laugh:

We sadly have not seen him play yet. Actually, for all they're the rival team, we haven't seen much of Oujo lately period. After they spent all that time on Takami and Sakuraba not much happened. But I bet Ikari will probably be "unleashed" when they eventually take on Deimon.

Although one thing of note is that Shin was named the MVP of the Tokyo Tournament. Sakuraba's manager had a prize for the MVP, a brand-new plasma-screen laptop, which Shin broke the minute he put his hands to it. (he ripped off the monitor) Nice to know some things will never change. :laugh:

Hm...so far, Shin has broken 3 things:
A videocamera, i think it was for no particular reason or he wanted to check the little screen.
A GPS, just to ses if there was a map in there.
Laptop, for fun? XDDD ( he probably though: "Well, i already destroyed 2 things, a 3rd wouldn't hurt. )
But to be honest Shin isn't really dumb, he just has no sense in technology....which would probably be the reason why he's training.....because he doesn't know how to start the TV on :P?

I like Ikari, he's funny, however i wonder which his opponent will be against Deimon. ( Ootawara is a DT so he's near Kurita and Komusubi )
Since his stats is unknown ( through Baller's High ), it's not really certain in what he has for talent....well......he ran kinda fast when he heard the Punk's coach insulting Sakuraba.....but he has alsothat massive body muscles....like a Jojo :P
