How would that make a difference?

Your Joking Right?
First im talking about monthly releases. and second is it not obvious that it would not have stiff competion the weeks naruto was released -
It would be best it they released One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach all on different months.

Your Joking Right?
First im talking about monthly releases. and second is it not obvious that it would not have stiff competion the weeks naruto was releasedIt doesn't make a difference because "Naruto" has a bigger fanbase than "One Piece" regardless. It's not gonna sell more just because another bigger series is getting released the same day.
-
One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach are all being released every other month. Asking for their releases to be staggered is asking for a slow down in the release rate. I'm not exactly sure who that would help, but it's certainly not us. Just keep the volumes coming!

Actually they will be at 68
-Vol 66 in May
-Vol 67 in August
-Vol 68 in November -
Do you guys think we can make volume 61 reach the top of the manga portion of the NY Times best seller list this month?
-
I don't know, I do know a lot of people(including myself) bought volume 61 online on Viz Manga. So that may have brought down sales of the physical volume.
-
I'm going to be buying Blue Deep and Volume 61 on the same day. So whenever my store gets Blue Deep is the day I get 61.
-
Picked up Volume 61 on Sunday. Were the post-time skip Straw Hat sketches always in volume 61 or were they originally in Data Book Green? I guess they were in volume 61….I just assumed they were in green with the other sketches. I think I got mixed up....I vaguelly remember them being in the volume 61 SBS in the Japanese volumes and I doubt Viz would pull anything from another source. Can anyone confirm this though?

Yep, they were always in volume 61. I know because it and 62 are the only Japanese manga volumes I have! :P

Hello all. I just recently finished up my One Piece collection (All of OP to V60, picking up 61 this week, and the two Color Walks). It's really nice to have a smooth translation. However, I was curious if there was a list of all the name mistranslations from the Viz volumes? I know some of the obvious ones, like Zolo, Roguetown, etc, but I was looking for a more all-encompassing list. The One Piece wiki has some, but seems to be missing others. Thanks in advance!

Off the top of my head:
"Zolo"
Choo saying "Smek" intstead of Choo
"Roguetown"
"Kami Eneru"
"Vassals" instead of "Priests"
"Neptunians" instead of "Sea Kings".If anyone can think of more, by all means. Hope this helps ^^
-
Technically, Neptunians aren't a mistranslation. It's a translation of the kanji (sea god + genus) rather than the furigana. Same thing with smek, it's a soundeffect for kissing.
Portgas is Portgaz, but that's more of a romanization fault than outright mistranslation. Oh, and Teach being Teech, one of the few remaining remnants of the 4Kids era.
-

This right here still kind of ticks me off since this name change only happened in one of the games (Pirate's Carnival, IIRC), and not in the actual 4kids dub.
-
Well thank God they went with Ace instead of… shudder "Trace"...
-
picked up vol.61 today, only had time to read 1 chapter. Kinda bummed that Jewelry got taken out off panel but, i was super stoked when they showed more of Apoo and Blackbeards crew.
Looking forward to seeing the other crew members training for the next 2 years.

Bought volume 61!! So awesome! Also got the final issue of Shonen Jump! Now that its over gonna start buying missing volumes!
-
When is that interview with Oda from Jump Festa 12 gonna be in SJA?

When is that interview with Oda from Jump Festa 12 gonna be in SJA?
It starts this weeks issue, then continues in the week after that's issue, and then a video of Oda drawing Luffy will be on SJ Alpha.com the week after that.
-
Whoa, I had no idea we had that stuff to look forward to!
I thought Oda was against being filmed though?

Well, if it follows suit of Massashi Kishimto's video and Tite Kubo's video we will probably just be seeing Oda's hands most of the time.
-
Why wasn't the interview in the issue?
-
I assume the Oda Sensei interview is in the next issue. They took a break inbetween the Kishimoto Sensei and Kubo Sensei interviews didn't they? Makes sense.
-
I am just going to guess it was because they teased the Toriko X OP crossover in this issue.

Just as I thought:
-
Naruto in first.
-
I finally got Vol. 61 the other day. It's strange seeing the fan art gallery back after so long.

-
Just as I thought:
This is great news. Hopefully, it might stay in the Top 10 for a least a couple more weeks.

I'm pretty sure this list is only for bookstores. Just as well, it's been selling really well on Amazon for quite a while.
-
And once again, let's not forget digital sales. I actually have bought volumes 60+ from Viz Manga.
-
Hi guys, since this place seems to have quite a few people who know Japanese I though I'd ask.
I'm new so please don't flame me if this isn't the appropriate thread, I figure it's a better bet than starting a new topic.
I was reading scanlations initially until I started buying Viz volumes this year, and I was noticing some differences. Nevermind the names or things like Kami, or even occasional typos, they don't bother me much.
But there are specific instances in translation where it seems to either differ severely from what I recall from scanlations, as well as seemingly conflict with what's happening in the panels.
One of the later volumes that I noticed it was third page of chapter 526 where Domino talks about boiling prisoners' clothing as "baptizing" instead of prisoner being themselves dipped into hot water, was that confirmed to be a mistranslation?
Another one that stuck out yesterday was conclusion of Zoro and Kaku fight, where the dialogue is very different. In Viz version Kaku exclaims that the Zoro turned his own (Zoro's) attack into mist, even though pictorially it seems like he Turned Kaku's attack into mist and that's the way it was translated in scanlations.
But then Zoro's attack itself is called "silver mist". Not sure here. Then there is also in the same panels Zoro's exlamation about suffering being good on the path of carnage in scanlations, whereas Viz translates as "pain and suffering, that is the path the lies before you" directed at Kaku. Similar but ultimately rather different.
Whenever I run into stuff like this it makes me scratch my head and wonder how legitimate is the rest of the translation that I assumed to be correct. Can anybody familiar with the original language enlighten me about these?
There's more but these are the ones I remember off the top of my head. -
The translations might be tweaked a little to what the scanlator prefers. They might've thought that the mist came from Kaku's attack or vice versa and decided to change it so it made more sense. As with the "baptizing", it could very well just be a choice of words. Perhaps the Japanese word used was something like "initiated", or "reborn", and VIZ did not think to use the word "baptize" so they just said "bathed in hot water". This isn't really my area of expertise, but if Stephen decides to pop his head in here I'm sure he can give you better answers.
-
He's talking about how Viz's translation says they boil the clothes instead of putting the prisoners in hot water.
-
Just as I thought:
naruto is still number 1 =(
-
Of course it is, I doubt that will change soon.

Well the manga should be over pretty soon with what has been happening lately, I'm actually sure it should ends before year's unless Kishimoto randomly pulls something on us.
But I really don't think Naruto coming out is affecting OP sales, I mean do you really think as soon as Naruto ends people will just cling on to One Piece?

Yeah you're right, its just frustrating that slop is selling better.
At least one piece is selling decently to warrant continuation. And I guess that's all I could ask for

Wanting One Piece to sell better makes sense, but do we really have to wish other series would sell worse? Viz making money is a good thing for us and them loosing Naruto does not benefit us at all. The more money Viz has at their disposal, the better for all of viz's series. OP isn't going to start selling like it does in Japan when Naruto ends.
Also, I think Naruto is nowhere near One Piece level, but it is a decent manga.
-
Just as I thought:
Great! I'm also glad that Psyren is in the top 10. Wasn't in the last list from what I recall. I have the two first volumes, and knowing it sells well means they'll do all the 14, or 16 volumes. Whatever it was.

As I own all 61 volumes, in bookform, I would be quite annoyed if it was dropped right before the end. What an incomplete collection that would be.

Another question for those in the know, I was curios since Viz translates sound effects:
Are sound effects something that is added to the finished panels later in the process, and Viz gets virgin pages from the japanese publisher, or do they have to actually erase the effects, redraw parts of the image, add then add the translated effect on top of that?
I can't quite figure it out since whenever there are speed lines, textures and other such thing behind the translated effects that aren't visible in original they never look out of place. -
I think they have to redraw the sound effect wholesale. It was very obvious early on (the panel where Morgan is defeated in Vol. 1 was atrociously butchered), but they've gotten a lot, lot better since. I haven't seen any obvious mistakes with redrawing since Vol. 24.

http://www.nytimes.com/best-sellers-books/manga/list.html
As per usual, the new volume stayed on the list for the next week but went to a much further down spot. I'm a little disappointed to see the usual happen after what looks like the highest ranking "One Piece" has ever gotten on the New York Times Manga Best-Seller list. But it beat "Soul Eater" which is nice, on the ICv2 series rankings "Soul Eater" beats "One Piece". And to be fair the list had a bunch of newly released manga volumes on it. And "Naruto".
