Isn't Moldova basically Romania, but poorer and depressing?
Eurovision Songcontest - Germany 2011

-
It's the piece of Romania Stalin bit off, chewed up, then stuck to the side of the USSR desk, forgot about, then it declared independence after the USSR collapsed.
-
I voted for Italy, Georgia, Slovenia, Spain and Iceland.
A shame none of them won and Azerbaijan were the winners, but hey, they treat that shit as their World Cup, and besides, I'd rather have them than that Sweden band, bah gawd. The best song of this Eurovision was by far, though:
-
Isn't Azerbaijan part of WEST ASIA?
I remember memorizing every Asian country in the world. Despite the stereotype look on Asia, I'm pretty sure Azerbaijan is still an Asian country, along with Turkey.Okay, so these countries don't want to be part of Asia. Fine. We don't even need them anyway. In fact, they hardly even contribute on Asian culture and politics.
Why can't geographers just write these countries down as "Europe" instead of labeling them as a convoluted that is "Euroasia". Russia is geographically Eurasia, but officially part of Europe. Why can't these countries be?
As an Asian, I don't even want this countries to part of us.

I think Kazakhstan's considered part of Europe for some godforsaken reason.

Isn't Azerbaijan part of WEST ASIA?
I remember memorizing every Asian country in the world. Despite the stereotype look on Asia, I'm pretty sure Azerbaijan is still an Asian country, along with Turkey. The South Caucasian countries are controversially sometimes included in Europe, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia. Generally cultural claims are made for the two Christian ones there. But Azerbaijan is deeply tied to Iran historically and culturally, so it's particularly silly if you ask me to include it.
Turkey is another matter. After all Most of the Turkish population is closer to Europe than Cyprus but would you doubt Cyprus as Europe?
Okay, so these countries don't want to be part of Asia. Fine. We don't even need them anyway. In fact, they hardly even contribute on Asian culture and politics.
What the hell are you talking about. Asia is the biggest geographical farce on earth lol. If Europe is a good idea for a continent than Asia should be broken down into at least four or five continents.
Why can't geographers just write these countries down as "Europe" instead of labeling them as a convoluted that is "Euroasia". Russia is geographically Eurasia, but officially part of Europe. Why can't these countries be?
There is no technical definition, it's all ultimately subjective.
As an Asian, I don't even want this countries to part of us.
lol at "us".
There is no "us" in Asia. See? Saying your Asian is virtually meaningless. Azerbaijan and Turkey are ten billion times more related to Europe than say Japan or East Timor.

instead of labeling them as a convoluted that is "Euroasia"
Isn't it just because the two are on the same tectonic plate or something?
so it's geographical definition, not a cultural thing -
What? No that makes no sense, there's a lot of countries on that plate that aren't ever even remotely considered as Eurasian. In fact all of Asia aside from Arabia, South Asia, and most of Japan are on that plate. Pretty sure Malta actually isn't even on it, but that's considered Europe. And half of Iceland too.

/ignorantYeahh.. thanks for the reply.
And no, I'm not ignorant. I just find it hard that only few people talks about this issue seriously. -

Wait- Japan and company aren't considered to be part of Eurasia?
I'm confused -
Eurasia and Eurasian refer to different things. Eurasian when describing a country will generally mean it's trans-continental. Russia, Turkey, and sometimes Cyprus, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan.
-
I see.
-
The traditional boundaries of Europe are generally considered to be the Turkish straits, Caucasus Mountains, and Ural Mountains.
-
I'm actually quite happy for the peeps of Azerbaijan. Those poeple are literally craving for a little bit of positive attention and recognition. And they do have a rich culture, that nobody seems to give a shit about, except for oil. But I realized next year the contest is going to be held at a place ruled by a dictatorship. Propaganda galore! Cracked me up when officials declared how FINALLY the world realized how magnificent the culture and music of Azerbaijan is.The song was composed by Swedes with zero input of anything that resembles the country's culture.
It's not as bad as Belarus but there is probably a lot of propaganda heading our way next year.
-
So all former Soviet States are varying levels of dictatorships?
-
Nope, not the Baltics. And the Ukraine I guess, though that's certainly not the healthiest democracy around. Or Moldova. I'm not sure how healthy the democracies of Armenia and Georgia are. And Kyrgyzstan is kind of up in the air right now.
Russia is mad suspect.
And Belarus, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and especially especially Uzbekistan are all straight up in ya face dictatorships.
The Baltics are the real winners of the "Leave the USSR and you may win a western european lifestyle!" sweepstakes.
-
Moldavian gnomes were good, great even. Zdob si Zdub is a good band, actually. A bit strange to see them at Eurovision. Which was weak, but, hey, when it isn't.
And Baltics suck.
Dictatorship needs a strong leader - ideally, a competent strong leader, but alas - so Baltic countries, being a sad band of spineless and irredeemably corrupt 52nd state wannabees, have no possibility to become one. As for becoming a democracy, a dysfunctional mess that denies vote rights to a good 15% of its citizens or impeaches a legally elected president, has quite a long way to go. Baltics suck either way.

Pricipality of Moldavia, year 1359, founded by Stalin, eh.
Although between slavs, magyar, wallach and gypsy, it must be tough t odetermine your identity.

Azerbaijan is a funny country.

Moldavia was one of the three historical regions of Romania, along with Wallachia and Transylvania.
Modern Moldova just so happens to be on part of it's former territory. The rest is mostly still in Romania, and part is in Ukraine.
It's history is just as I described.
