you can only steal as many points as they have on their account, meanwhile with a credit card or worse yet personal info to acquire a credit card has no limit essentially

Well while there are bare minimum security laws there aren't really any laws that say how security information has to be stored so as long as they did the bare minimum they should be fine. Now for the alerting us part as soon as the intrusion happened they hired a security firm so as soon as their investigation was done sony was legally required to tell us and they did.

What? There's been a massive security breach and your seriously complaining about them implementing a security measure to ensure our data won't get compromised? Yes, it should be mandatory.
I can't remember how changing your password works for the PSN but I don't see how a working e-mail address is required.

And why should sony risk hackers having access to large number of accounts. And why should they not take this opportunity to safeguard their customers( especially given they've just screwed up rather spectacularly in that regard)

Sony's definately taken a hit to the face and below the belt, but I see there ARE some opportunities to come out of this in a good way. But they'll have to surpass our expectations, or at least surprise us. Throw in some useful and much needed features into the rebuild.
