Bakuman addressed this? Haven't read Bakuman. About Negima I don't know I don't feel that exactly exciting vibe that you get from Oda's spread it's certainly good. It certainly draws you in on how it's toned and I admit I like that about it but maybe I just dosen't satisfy me.
To each on his own. I find it hilarious I was rambling about Gon for all this time then you come and break the unpatented truth of Gon in this one thread. That's pretty funny
By the way how is current bastard at the moment?
Ask Aldrich, he's a massive fan of it.
-
Honestly Negima has that 'good background but something just isn't right' vibe to it.
Its probably because the characters are so flat that it looks like he just photoshopped his characters to a real life photograph.

Yeah….yeah..that has something to do with it too...
Well said.
-
Well you go from city that looks as detailed as a photograph tooooo…
Depthless Chibi face and flailing arms.
Backgrounds can look as slick as they want to... but if the characters don't look like they belong there thennnnnn

lol I got THREAD BANNED
Anyway
By the way how is current bastard at the moment?
It's been on hiatus for about a year and a half now
If we're talking about guys who stopped caring a long time ago then Hagiwara (Bastard!!'s author) is pretty much the worst offender
He basically takes giant breaks (sometimes 2 years), then comes back for 6 months, draws some unfinished chapters with doodles and sketches that basically read like porn doujins and goes back to sleep
You know that he actually is the guy who introduced Togashi to his Sailor Moon wife, his mentor basically, so that explains
Also to be ON TOPIC I'm pretty much sure the examples that guy gave of Akamatsu's supposedly great monster and character designs are ripped off straight from Bastard!!
The black demon monster is basically Satan's Augoeides, and the goofy DARK NEGI form is Majin Dark Schneider (someone else post the pics I can't be arsed) except you know, completely devoid of personality and creativity
OOOOOOOOH BAN EVASION
-
Some of you think waaaaay too much and are waaaay to elitist about art quality for a weekly shounen.
It's a fantastic light story and the art is perfectly reasonable, and i'm really quite bemused that the topic needs much more conversation than that.

Wow man, it's so elitist to say a thing sucks!!
omg did you see that guy say he got a bad burger???? FUCKING BOURGEOISE MOTHERFUCKER, STRING THAT ARISTOCRAT UP
Oh and also what kind of fucking moron says what you just said on a One Piece forum lol.

I know right? You can pretty much scribble on a paper, good shonen art.

LOL, what did you ever do?
I hope this account won't be banned as well.
@RobbyBevard:The art in Bastard is very 80's for the first few volumes, then it starts changing and polishing into something really cool around volume 10… and then around volume 17 it gets crazy awesome looking.
Just looked at the raw. It's from volume 24 that it started looking good for me (the first pic you posted is from this volume, to avoid confusion, since I don't know how many pages each volume in your version). Before that, the lines are too thin and no emphasizing in contrast, so it looked bland even though every detailed.

I still remember the hilarious doublespread with a single text summary explaining what should be happening on the page and an apology for no art.
I think that was the last scanlated chapter 135 or 136.
-
This is how you use tone:

Bastard!! art is great, but Berserk is far better than it. Negima possess good backgrounds, but it's not something great, I can feel a little bit of blandness, like it's lacking something…
But the characters are all the same, looks like a bunch of clones.

Holy shit., what does this guy do? play videogames like Togashi all day. I've seen pics of Haigiwara and lets say he dosen't like look the type to attract any girls easily.

I've always seen Negima designs as pretty much a gaia sprite, I talking about the male and female designs as whole, most of what Batter posted was being 'tryhardy cool' without any heart so it failed for me. Also I don't know why you were banned from here you barely even posted in this thread.

Exactly, spot on.

Are you serious?
That's worse then Kishimoto and Togashi. Both which are weekly and at least churn out 'art' even though both are severely lacking…I can understand if he took a two month break to improve the art, or make up the story bnut that? That's unexcusable.
-
A lot of you are coming in here with no interest in the series whatsoever, and are just here to watch Zephos beat up on Lion. That's fine, but if thats going to be the case, either don't say anything at all and just watch, or be constructive.
His challenge wasn't an open invitation to come in and start trolling the joint.

According to 4-panel comics he made about his daily life on recent editions, he's always traveling or going to parties, even visiting friends, manga artists or not, like Tetsuo Hara, they are good friends and Hagiwara made 2 or 3 4-panel comics showing him visiting Tetsuo and his family.

I remember some chapters where he left blank pages or just put onomatopoeia with narration in it.

That's cool. But what I said was more a joke if anything, that's no excuse for dicking around with his art especially if has two freaking months deadline, I mean Miura or Togashi where they dick around playing videogames still churn out more effort then him.
Sounds like a cool guy though. He likes parties, he's my type of guy.

Wow, first time I'm behind pages in the Negima section. Pretty neat.
@RobbyBevard:
Lion, this is your battle. You hunt down some of the fantasy stuff, I don't care enough. Find the underwater library, sewers, and the flying islands and some of the towns and shit. I've already given you an example of the sort of things to hunt for.
[hide]http://i26.mangareader.net/mahou-sensei-negima/186/mahou-sensei-negima-338766.jpg[/hide]
Is this really even a battle any more? It seems to me it's become more of a huge messy discussion with multiple people taking on multiple people including my opponent (so much for mano a mano). A lot of people, including you, have been making my points for me. Heck even Zephos said he doesn't want to argue with me any more. I suppose I'll whip something up and save it on the hard drive just in case. Oh and I might as well give those awesome drawings.

why is the art such a huge discussion? this is a over 300 chapter series
If you can answer this one question as a yes, then maybe i'll listen.
Has the art gotten WORSE since the start of the series to now?
If not, shut up. You obviously just don't like the art, so why make such a big deal and bitch about it. There's nothing to be done or discussed about if you dislike the art style
-
@RobbyBevard:
It's done by a team of 7 or 8 people, instead of one main with 2 or 3 assistants, is what's off about it.
Is that really the reason?
I'm not saying Akamatsu doesn't have a fleet of assistants, though I can't imagine him having less than Oh Great!, but a big reason his backgrounds are so detailled is he's basically transposing reference shots he takes during his "gathering materials" breaks. Kyoto Animation did this a lot for Suzumiya Haruhi, I guess it's a time/effort saving measure.
I don't think this is true for Mundus Magicus' backgrounds, but when I think of Akamatsu's insanely detailled BGs, I always think of the ones seen when Negi's in Japan.
-
why is the art such a huge discussion?
Because Lion Chan invited a bunch of strangers in that haven't read the series to discuss it.

I was just trying to increase the activity of this thread a little…

That's well and good, but did you have to invite Don Corleone, Voltaire and that Pokemon researcher guy?

Well after almost four months of reading and brakes I have finally reached final chapter of Negima… and my personal verdict of it is...mediciore.
It is brilliant in some points, unfortunately great majority of the series is not. People claimed that first 40-100 chapters would be tough to get through but that is groase understatement, I would say that it took about 150-200 chapters until story really picked up and I would get excited about it.
There were some intresting moments during those first 200 chapters such as school festival tournament and Kaede's plot and Kyoto mini arc but other than that it felt very…filler like, full of 12 year old fan service and pointless subplots serving to do nothing but making embarrasing 'romantic' moments between 10 year old child teacher and his numerous girl students.
After Magic world arc begins series gets hold on itself and builds rather solid plot with purpose, everything is pretty smooth ride from here and I did immenensly enjoyed Rakan battle what was really amazing but as for recent chapters? I cant really get that excited, Fate is not that convincing antagonist and while his defeat is assured by Negi I cant get hyped up for it, mayby its just because battle system is so…chaotic. Its pretty much same with Fairy Tail who also uses generic 'magic' system allowing numerous and unforseen asspull techinques pulled off just because its 'magic'. I think Negi is made far too powerful now and its just broken because of it. Power diffrence between Negi and Fate compared to everyone else will make this battle once again one vs one where powerful techniques follow each other resulting typical Shounen battle where Main hero pulls a final hit to overpower his enemy.
That being said I dont think charecters in story are particulary exceptional and while there are pretty good charecters and personal stories of some of those girls are pretty amazing I dont think series stand out charecter wise from the rest.
Battle system IS very random to me or rather Negi's powers are, he haves affinity to lightning and is very good melee fighter but hes battles are still very chaotic and random.
Art is pretty solid though faces and features could be more distuingished.
Story is pretty intresting though only long line main plot is Negi's search for his seemingly non-caring father filled with innumerable fanservice sub plots and some intresting more serious side plots, but with great world building and solid current arc story is at good shape, though it took over 150 chapters to get it really running...
-
I don't think my power level is high enough to get the most out of an Rot3K parody manhua. It's hard for Westerners who didn't grow up with that story to be able to keep track of the characters and their subplots, I'd need something simplified like Sengoku Rance (for Warring States Japan) just to familiarize myself with the character names, the geography and the political motivations.

Without those chapters to build up the day-to-day relationship of Negi and his students, it wouldn't be believable that they'd be so supportive of him by the time of the magical world field trip. Especially the girls who weren't of the "main cast" for a good long while, like Ako, Natsumi, and Mana.

I agree. Fate's not the kind of villain who's so overtly antagonistic the readers not only lack sympathy, but want him dead. Beyond Fate's brutality toward Negi, there's not a whole lot of justification to hate him unless you've internalized the same passion as Negi, and so are so supportive of his no less justified views. I don't think Akamatsu is even portraying him in a distinctly negative light, as the possibility always exists that he'll become one of Negi's allies, just like Kotarou did.
From my perspective, when the hero is a child, the ideal series villain is an adult. When the hero is an adolescent, an older adolescent works. Children, like Fate, never seem to work well as major villains, though Akamatsu managed to pull it off with Evangeline simply by making Evangeline an adult in a loli body.
That being said I dont think charecters in story are particulary exceptional and while there are pretty good charecters and personal stories of some of those girls are pretty amazing I dont think series stand out charecter wise from the rest.
Are you implicitly praising Naruto and Fairy Tail?
Battle system IS very random to me or rather Negi's powers are, he haves affinity to lightning and is very good melee fighter but hes battles are still very chaotic and random.
Yeah, Negi's are kind of spontaneous and tough to tell apart, but his beam-spams never seem to work out in the end, he almost always ends up having to use some kind of strategy that's easy to understand.

Then stay the hell out of our discussions about great manga art.
You have no one to blame but TLC here, don't get on my case.

Michael: You heard what happened in the General One Piece Section?
Frankie Pentangeli: Mike, I almost died myself. It was all so…
Michael: IN THE GENERAL ONE PIECE SECTION! IN MY THREADS WHERE I GO OFF TOPIC! Where children come and play with Hurt and Heal. In the General One Piece Section.

Wait isn't HxH still in it's first thread?
Also MiXiM11 only had 1 thread an no one besides maybe a small handfull of people on this forum even bothered to read it. Whenever someone would read it they'd read the first 10 chapters an think it's some shoujo comic when it turned out to be more of a battle manga and a good one at that. Plus it ended where it needed to end.
As for Negima's art: it's nice, the character designs are bland for my taste but it's nice.

This fight is already awesome. That is all.
! Does anyone know what Fate did when Negi was gonna Oukahouken the shit out of him and where he's used it before?
-
I've been working towards getting to where the action in Negima is supposed to ramp up. I had stopped reading it years ago when, apparently, it ramps up, or gets serious, however you want to call it.
I've been curious to see how it fares with my own eyes, so I restarted from the beginning, so I may properly judge it. I might have something to say here in the future, so your topic doesn't have to be so lonely anymore! You'll have a guest for at least a few posts.

! you mean the petrification cloud? He used it in Kyoto to petrify the girls in the room when Asakura pushed Yue out the door. I believe he also used it against Negi, which is the reason he pactioed with Konoka…
! Anyway, they seem pretty even, which kinda supports my theory that this fight won't last very long, IMO. It is a little creepy seeing such a stoic character like Fate to smile like that...but still cool... -
Well, my county's library has some of the volumes, but it's all screwed up…(4-13, 20, 24) but I'll read it somehow...I've heard a lot of good stuff and the pictures that have been posted on here look cool...I shall start it soon!!

! Awesome chapter. Full of side character and main character goodness. It's fun to see Misora actually do something and without the hood! It was quite admirable how Shirabe managed to persevere despite being so heavily out-numbered. Fate and Negi is shaping up to be an incredible pure-distillled shonen fight just like Negi vs Rakan. The best part is to see the two worlds beginning to fuse at the end. Insane!!!
Oh and Akamatsu has long been confirmed alive for those who were wondering. He twittered himself from his Akamatsu studio.
