Phoenix gotta be near Nausicaa's level now that I think about it. After recollecting the last story. It was terrific imagination. The hibernation of millions/billions of years. The re-creation of the world. Snails once ruled the Earth. Developed nations (of snails) eventually came to destruction.
A true contender for the greatest manga of all times.
One Piece Overrated?

G-8 is still "One Piece", not the original "One Piece" but essentially it keeps the spirit of the story alive and ties into the canon quite nicely.
Maybe, I admit though I haven't seen it that it has an interesting premise.
BUT, that wouldn't make it in anyway essential, central, and at best merely resembling the real thing.
And as such, no I am not missing any part of the One Piece experience. Just some maybe neat thing some guys did in the name of OP. Like a really good AMV.
I'm not the kind of person that believes just because a story is being reinterpreted by a different artist it doesn't mean it can't be held in high regard.
Neither am I.
But that doesn't mean I would regard even good material as an essential part of the original.
And in general the OP anime is FAR from qualifying as that.
Some of the filler does add to the story.
No, absolutely no.
By nature no.
By virtue no.Little moments like in recent episode where Coby picks up a fallen soldier's locket or those episodes after Alabasta with the crew just hanging out on the boat I felt complemented the canon material pretty well.
They are still flab. Nothing is missed.
The anime-only viewers and the manga-readers are essentially enjoying the same story.
No, not if you appreciate the construction.
And what kind of music do you consider impressive? I don't have any particular tracks off the top of my head, almost all of them are great. Just try looking through the OSTs online and give a listen and see what you like. I might post something later.
How hard is it to pick a highlight. How good can a soundtrack be if you can't differentiate the songs.
Somebody else reading do this for me.
-
Hokuto no ken ended when Raoh died.
You know what? I'm perfectly fine with going with that story.
-
Okay JERK DISEASE, I picked out two examples for you:
Here's a personal favorite of mine:
Anyway I see where you're going with this, but I disagree that by virtue the anime is lower than the manga. Construction isn't everything, heck some people just prefer the anime medium.
And I don't remember implying anything the anime being an essential part of the original. It isn't the original, but it's an adaptation that does the manga justice. All I'm saying is that it doesn't matter which version you're experiencing.
-
Devilman a SHOUNEN???
I think we should rank older mangas as what they would be now. No way in fucking hell Devilman would be considered shounen nowadays. Same with Hokuto no Ken, although we could argue that, if you take the gore away, what's left is a purely shounen structure. But fucking Devilman??
Also, I haven't read Phoenix, but I get it isn't very shounenish from how Sea described it.
If we speak about "pure" shounen, I think Dragon Ball and One Piece are at the top. Easily. And I would add Slam Dunk, if only because of the exceedeengly good art.
-
What you call Pure shounen is what started by Dragon Ball (and Fist of North Star).
And yes Devilman and Phoenix are totally not the typical shounen these days. -
what i like about phoenix and Osamu Tezuka, they tell a story.
-
I really couldn't get into Fist of the North Star.

Ban for "Being a Tool"
This forum is just like "Something Awful" forums, except, you know, for the quality of the posting.I'm not sure if you're implying that the posts are better here or there, because actually I'd say we're better aside from a few of their sections.
For instance our Arab Revolutions thread is ten times less filled with pretentious pinko bullshit, and twenty times less filled with a bunch of people being huge vaginas about how "OMG EVERYTHING IS FALLING APART MUBARK WILL NEVER FALL NOW AAAAHHHH:sad:".
And that's the intellectual wing of their forum!
-
I'm implying the posts are a million times better there.
You in there, or you just lurk? -
BTW, I dunno what you consider "pretensious pinko bullshit" (I'm awful with… well... everything Politic-related, but I'm specially awful with English terms), but I remember seeing a guy getting banned there for arguing that the Muslim Brotherhood is the reason why all of this is happening, and will take power over Egypt.
That was fun

Good on that, but than they'll allow huge moronic diatribes about how awful this is because its MOVING TOWARD BOUGEROISE DEMOCRACY NEOLIBERALIST TENDENCIES or someshit.
Sections of that forum would probably be literally upset if the protests overthrow Iran.
-
Hmm, well, that part of the forum population is nearly not as big or as relevant as you seem to be implying with that post, cause I saw the two mega-threads regarding this subject, and I don't remember many people as the one you describe.
I don't doubt you for one second, though, not even SA can filter all the shit, I am there, after all -
I just tried top read the first chapter of Negima, then on the second page I dropped it like a rock. I hate the artstyle, it's so mindboggling generic I nearly lost my mind. Perhaps that just me but part of the reason I got into One Piece is the very thing tha people most dislike: The artstyle. With Negima it looks disgusting and overtly shameful I just could not get into that shit I'm sorry.
-
Maxdexter: Well I can acknowledge that. but the way it was still handled was eye-rolling preachy and very typical. Also regardless, Ed defeating this near omnipotent villain that fast, is pretty dull and I do acknowledge the villain was conceited and full of himself but in the end he transformed to a bland bishonen design with a generic apathetic god persona. I just didn't like Ed suddenly giving him the smack down after just getting his other arm back. I wish he was defeated in a more clever way and I have a feeling Arakawa could have done that. Also I don't have much love for the ending, It wasn't bad, but with a lot of FMA it just gave you too much what the audience wanted. I'd would have preferred a more somber upbeat ending then the one we got. Arakawa is talented and is very well researched, but she needs to work a little more when expanding and making her world more wider to explore. I mean the FMA's world is interesting– its a fantasy world with elements similar to the industrial revolution era FMA is a great series at the start with an but 'okay' near the end. It just didn't 'wow' me with it became, at the start there was more potential then nearing the finale I just got disappointed . But I think I will reread the series for fun.
I'll agree that it wasn't "wow", more complacient and fanservice-ish way.
Father did become bland in the end. But I like the way that he was defeated, as a mortal, with punches and kicks. He used his power to contain power, not to use it, he was practicaly just a container.

I have read Fairy Tail as well but the designs are kinda bland and souless. Their pretentioulsy cool RPG. I think I dropped it some near the sixth volume, and have read some pieces online. Fairy Tail is good, not great it just does not have that creative sense of world One Piece has, and the characters are kinda meh. I can see why folks would like it better than OP but I feel its vastly inferior to it. It's at least better than Rave Master structure wise, and it has many surprisingly similar elements to One Piece but like I said it's a bit average and structurely better than Rave Master. Anyone who loathed Rave Master might not like Fairy Tail(though its better). The problem with Fairy Tail is that it's a nervous shonen, it's afraid to go anywhere new and it just overdoes alot of things because it wants to be accepted. The fanservice is pretty clear proof of that and the melodrama is so fucking corny it's almost on par with Rave Master the whole repetietive
Because they are my friends
'Because we are Fairy Tail'
It's pretentiously cheesy and the series overdoes that alot. Goddamn don't get me started on Gerald and the furry melodrama that rivals Sonic adventure games in awfulness. Fairy Tail is a nervous shonen IMO. It tries to hard to be accepted and is afraid flex its muscles and its a rookie in handling shonen cliche's–even Bleach and Naruto handles it better in a sense.Soul Eater is good, it takes pride of the genre its in. It's generic but it handles the cliche's of genre in very cool ways. It's certainly prideful of being shonen and it has an interesting female protagonist. I suggest folks read it It's great pure shonen fun.
Negima: I don't care what anybody say's the art/character design looks fucking horrible, and I'll never read a page of that again sorry.

Fair Tail is One Piece with mutilple sclerosis.

Fairy Tail is the scum off the One Piece soup. It has the same basic barebones feel but lacks any of the depth, imagination, character development or world building. It's so bland and unimaginative it really becomes hard to take seriously, Mashima just throws cliché after cliché at you and expects you to swallow them like they mean anything. You can tell he's just copying out the standard shonen formula and not putting anything new in to make it fresh or even just interesting. I don't know if this because of lack of talent or because he's scared of alienating little boys but as long as it continues the series will be mediocre and boring forever.
I haven't read Rave Master and I don't really plan to as I've heard it's worse.

Okay you're being a little harsh. Rave has it's moments and some nice designs. The fact they get shafted is besides the point.
Also the main cast for a while includes a Captain Falcon cosplayer with two aditional prostetic arms.
But it can also get trashy. Stil it is leaps, bounds and mountain ranges above stuff like Kämpfer.
-
Oh I deleted that post. It's not the worst I've read worst, it's actaully far below average in the shonen department. I was being too harsh on it, I'll say its the manga Eragon actually.
-
It's different adapted trash than legit professional trash.
I'm sure there's bound to be thousands of bad unprofessional movies out there, that doesn't make Dragon Ball Evolution any better.
It's about weight classes.

@No:
Okay you're being a little harsh. Rave has it's moments
ehh, nope.
and some nice designs.
Rave designs look like stuff I would have thought was too stupid back when I doodled random monsters in armor in middle school.
The fact they get shafted is besides the point.
Funny, I'd say that's a pretty major point.
Also the main cast for a while includes a Captain Falcon cosplayer with two aditional prostetic arms.
…who is this referring too? Is it the Vegeta guy?

I agree on Fairy Tail being one massive pile of shit.
And besides, this thread is fail because we all know One Piece isn't overrated.

Quoted for effect. By the way Jerk have you read Fairy Tail?
-
Reading Rave Master means I will never touch another work by Hiro Mashima.
-
Have you actualy finished RM anyway, I forgot.
-
Well Jerk, I'll assure you it's better than Rave Master. But if you ever do find the time to read it I'll give you a fair warning that the serious contains al ot of fanservice and I mean alot. With Fairy Tail, I feel Mashima's evolved a little and gotten a grasp on the shonen genre somewhat, though not fully yet. He's still is a rookie in handling it tastefully unlike post Kreig Oda, and pre-Tsunade Kishimoto and even Kubo to an extent(in terms of fight finishes)
I'm interested to see him develop and mature his art and writing some more before I give a final judgement of him. -
@No:
Have you actualy finished RM anyway, I forgot.
ahaha, would it MATTER?
After 17 volumes of pure unadulterated shit you're not going to try and tell me something fundamentally changes, and I mean a change in cast, tone, style, art, pacing, skill, you NAME IT. -
There's a guy in a captain falcon costume who has two rubber arm prostetics alongside his regular arms that joins the main cast for a while.
-
@Sonic:

In Japan yes, it is. In other parts in the world, especially most of the west it's underrated. Italy loves One Piece, and is perhaps the only European country that really cares for it. Damn, I wish I could find those Italian One Piece soccer shirts.

Well the cast changed.
Even though he got removed from the cast by….diarrhea.

Hmm. I always thought Fairy Tail was DBZ's and One Piece's extremely retarded love child.
-
Fairy Tail is the rape-son of rave master who stole a sample of DB's "Boys" and inseminated itself with it. And then raised it by comparing it to one piece and what a shame it is for not being that awesome.
-
I think the guy who writes Fairy Tail has a foot fetish. I occasionally browse the new releases on manga stream for giggles and I have noticed that women seem to lose their footwear on a regular basis.
Anyway, glad you guys share my hate for it.
-
I've only read the first volume of Fairy Tail. I thought it was enjoyable and that it was plently fun but I still didn't really have any interest in purchasing any more volumes.
-
Hmm. I always thought Fairy Tail was DBZ's and One Piece's extremely retarded love child.
Isn't DBZ already kinda retarded even though it's damn epic ?
-
Isn't DBZ already kinda retarded even though it's damn epic ?
My point exactly.
But I do like to read Fairy Tail. I just don't think it's great. And I only own the volumes Gajeel comes out in during the Phantom Lord arc, because Gajeel is awesome like that.

I don't hate Fairy Tail, it's just tries too hard to be accepted and I wish it would relax and flex it's muscles more. The awful furry melodrama, terrible preachy friendship stuff that it force-feeds to the reader too much it becomes unbearable, and the world is kinda bland and and dull and Gerald…..
-
Isn't DBZ already kinda retarded even though it's damn epic ?
Sacrilege! but I agree.
I am more of a Dragonball fan(or the first 16 volumes) rather than a DBZ guy (last 26 volumes I think), personally.
