in my opinion the Norland flashback was one of the better ones
New to One Piece (Well Sort Of)

I was going to save this for a thread but since people might post spoilers in there about upcoming ones I'll ask it in here. So what was your favourite flashback?
I'd say mine's either Sanji's, Chopper's or Norland's.
-
My favourite flashback hasn't happened yet for you, and i don't feel like spoiling it either.

Yeah you'd better qualify that with favorite flashback from the series up to Skypiea. Otherwise you might get a lot of spoilers coming your way.
So mine up to that point was probably… Norland's.

Episode 190: Angel Island, Obliterated! The Horror of the Raigo's Advent!
Enjoyable episode, true it had flaws but on the whole I had fun watching it. I wasn’t expecting Angel Island to be destroyed at all, I figured Luffy’d beat Eneru before he got the chance to annihilate it but goes to show the power of the plot twist. A minor annoyance with this episode would be Eneru knocking Luffy down and down again, whilst you gotta admire he determination I wanted him to reach the ark and conclude his showdown. I felt sympathy for the Sky Knight in this episode when he’s having his quiet rage, part of me wants him and Wyper to assist in taking God down. Not a lot else to comment on as this episode felt drawn out in a way but it was pretty good and I’m getting a disaster movie vibe from the setting now and as with any good disaster movie you gotta have an amazing climax and I’m hoping Skypiea will deliver.
Score: 8/10
Episode 191: Knock over the Giant Jack! Last Hope for Escape!
If last episode was the calm before the storm then this episode was for sure the end of the calm and then the beginning of the storm. The ending was undoubtedly epic and I believed in those last few minutes that Eneru would be defeated somehow, in a way I’m glad he wasn’t as it allows for a better resolution but also I’m annoyed he’s still standing. Although I did like the method for knocking over Giant Jack I wish it was done faster and sooner to allow more time for the clash between Luffy and Eneru. I’m also wondering if Wyper is a descendant of Calgira as I think it would be nice if Cricket and him met, the 2 ancestors finally meeting or something like that. Music was great in this episode, I think I heard a few new tracks which I liked . Overall brilliant episode and can’t wait for the next one.
Score: 9/10
Episode 192: Miracle on Skypiea! The Love Song Heard in the Clouds!
Epic. Everything about this episode was epic. First up the dialogue, Eneru declaring he is God and then Luffy just responding shut up dumbass or something along those lines made me have a big smile on my face. The music was amazing as well, I’m glad they didn’t decide to use that much throughout as the silence was effective. But perhaps the most epic thing of all was the imagery, Eneru transforming into a giant thunder god and the whole battle in the sky really stood out. Also the dark scenes, everyone praying and such then the light scenes once Eneru has been defeated. As for the defeat of Eneru I liked it a lot, Oda always seems to come up with the best ways to defeat villains, such as Luffy destroying Arlong Park when taking down Arlong and then him blasting Croc into the sky after finishing him and this was no exception. So now that Skypiea is more or less over I think this episode essentially was the best of the arc and also one of the best of One Piece so far.
Score: 10/10

So far from what you have seen the norland flashback is my favorite.
-
Noland's flashback is my favorite up to that point as well.

Episode 193: The Battle Ends! Proud Fantasia Echoes Far!
Whilst these episodes are necessary in a sense I don’t particularly like them. As great as it was to see Cricket and the monkeys again I just felt they were underused if that makes any sense. Basically they heard the bell and they were happy, that’s really all you can do with them anyways but those sort of scenes don’t really appeal to me. If there’s one thing I hate about One Piece it’s characters surviving from near death, fair enough if they’re shot but c’mon getting struck by lightening which must have had tons of volts is really pushing it. Not only that but it ruined their supposed deaths by them simply saying I’m alright after all. But one survival I was pleased about was Eneru’s, I was expecting him to survive but I wasn’t expecting him to get away. And endless Vearth is the moon! I was spoiled a little bit about Eneru wanting to go there but unbelievably I didn’t twig it was Upper Vearth as it’s a pretty hard mistake to make, no way does the moon last forever. So overall a nice episode but a little boring, I’m failing to see how Skypiea can last for another 2 episodes.
Score: 6/10
Episode 194: I Made it Here! The Yarn The Poneglyphs Spin!
Great episode, had fun watching it throughout. I liked how the Skypieans were so amazed by the rubber band as opposed to metal and then the ending confusion where the straw hats think the Skypieans after them, these parts were the highlight of the episode along with Luffy and Nami arguing during the night. I was surprised to learn Gold Rodger or rather Gol D Rodger visited Skypiea, makes me wonder more about the real Poneglyphs and what exactly it described. As for the similarities between Luffy and Rodger I certainly hope he’s not his son, that would be a little too much of a coincidence for my liking. On the topic of Luffy’s father I have no idea who it could be, not a clue, whilst I don’t like the idea of Rodger being his dad it seems a logical option. So nice episode overall, very peaceful and pleasant.
Score: 9/10
Alas that is the last dubbed episode I shall watch until I get the DVDS or Funi dubs more. I was planning to watch 195 dubbed but the links I can find are all mega video and my time limit is almost up. So now onto the sub!
Episode 195: Now Heading Towards the Blue Sea!! Memories of an Interwoven Finale!
So for my first subbed episode I’m impressed. I was expecting for me to take a while to adjust to the Japanese cast but for the most part I’m used to them already. My only problem would be I haven’t heard them well enough to recognize whose voice is who so when say they were having a go at Zoro I wasn’t exactly sure who was saying what sometimes bar from Sanji because he said shit head and he’d already said that once, either it’s a popular expression or it was him. My favourite voice so far would be either Luffy’s or Sanji’s but this episode didn’t really allow time to focus on each person in more detail. As for the episode itself it was good to have some closure on Skypiea, Gan Fall becoming the new leader of Skypiea, the monkeys and Cricket giving up their search etc. I thought the octopus was pretty cool and there were some fun moments throughout such as Luffy bouncing on it. As for the ending it’s pretty cool they’ve landed in a Marine Base, tempted to watch more tonight if I have the time. So great episode in general.

Skypiea Arc Review
General Thoughts and Feelings: I wouldn’t call this the worst arc yet but it certainly isn’t the best. Basically my main nitpick is that it had potential and it didn’t really use it. If I were Oda and I thought up a storyline involving Gods and a sky island yeah I would have used the ordeal idea but not just battles, other challenges, like a little competition if you will. That’s not my only problem I have plenty but some main ones are the priests weren’t interesting enough and I quickly got bored of them waiting for Eneru, also there needs to be more battles or more interesting ones, I liked the Luffy/Usopp/Sanji vs. Satori fight for the most part but the rest of the battles bar Wyper vs. Shura weren’t all that great. Enough with the negatives though this arc had plenty of positives, not only did we get some stellar heroes (Wyper, Conis) but also for the main part we got a compelling storyline. Throw in a very good flashback and a quite epic final battle and you certainly have an arc that’s considered a good one.
The Soundtrack: One would think that with a long running series like One Piece you’d have to bring in some new tracks, and yes One Piece does. But even if it didn’t I wouldn’t be fussed cause the music we had prior to this arc was excellent and I don’t tire of it because it’s well amazing. As for the new tracks that debuted I liked them all which is a good thing although my favourite would be a recurring one that seems to play when Zoro battles whose name escapes me. My favourite episode musical wise would be an episode in the Luffy/Satori fight, Episode 161, even if it was just the first half the tracks that were played before the eye catch were just about all of my favourites so they improved a fight I wasn’t too keen on at the moment in time.
Voice Acting: Fantastic as per usual, even though this is when Funi first started dubbing One Piece it was still pretty good. My favourite voice would be Eneru’s as I believe J Michael Tatum improves an already interesting character (his back-story, design etc.) and the voice he uses is awesome, makes Eneru one of the better villains for sure and plus the acting’s great as well. Kudos must also go to John Swasey as I had no idea he voiced Gan Fall which is a surprise as his voice seems rough to me and hard to change but had no idea till I found out later. Favourite returning voice would be Chris Sabat’s Zoro and Stephanie Young’s Robin as the characters they voice are cool in the sense they’re relaxed most of the time and I think their voices suit them near perfectly.
Favourite Battle: Luffy vs. Wyper for sure, the fight was well animated and choreographed in my humble opinion and it flowed really well, great to watch. It’s also quite sad that a fight that took up what half an episode is better than say one that took up about 3. Though honourable mentions must go to the battle against Satori which whilst may not be the best battle in One Piece it was one I was expecting to hate and it surprised me a bit at how much I managed to enjoy it. Part of me agrees with the poster who posted that Luffy/Eneru was a disappointment, whilst that was a great battle they literally fought for what 2 episodes ago if you take away all the distractions and I would have liked a bit more from it.
Favourite Hero: I’m going with Luffy this time again. Mainly because he was the primary focus throughout and everyone else was indisposed for great amounts of time except maybe Nami but between you and me all she’s good for most of the time is fan service. That’s not to say that I’m picking Luffy because he’s the only one left to pick, no I liked him in this arc. He was definitely a fun presence to have around, his determination and humour are all traits that make his character one of my favourites although I would like to see different sides to his character exposed, we’ve hardly seen if not at all sad Luffy or scared Luffy, I think seeing those would continue to improve his character and evolve him.
Favourite Villain: Rather obviously Eneru. I was told that he was the best villain long before I started watching so the bar was truly raised for him and my expectations were high and for the most part he delivered. Right from his debut his scenes were quite often the standout of the weak episodes he was placed in and whilst at times he does feel sidelined when he does turn up a part of me wanted to cheer. As I mentioned in a review I wanted to punch him, at first I was unsure about his reasons for wanting rid of the sky islands but then I realized even with a reason he has no right to kill anyone. I wish we’d seen him fight more as apart from owning Zoro and co the only other time he fought it was when his epic power was ineffective. I thought the priests had potential but they were a let down, not only were there Warship Island Arc (crap) but also the battles weren’t interesting. I know you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover but I hated their design and just about everything about them, I’m all for goofy villains but these are the servants of God more or less and I think most if not all of them should be serious. I suppose Ohm was serious and as was Shura, in fact I thought they were half decent but as I mentioned the battles they were in weren’t interesting and they didn’t have that much time to shine.
Moment that Wasn’t Needed: Great as it was that Luffy wasn’t the only one who got a crack at the villain I wish he hadn’t fallen from the ark. It was just plain annoying and distracted from the fight, ok sure the threat of Eneru is much greater once Luffy aint there but surely Oda could have had Luffy be knocked unconscious and then the rest of the crew try to stop Eneru whilst preventing him from knocking Luffy off the ark? I know that idea doesn’t sound good but anything other than what we got, well almost anything. Also the constant deaths, it makes all the survivals that bit more annoying.
Favourite Episode: I’m not the battle’s biggest fan but episode 192 where Luffy defeated Eneru was about as epic as they come. For some strange reason I like the fights where everyone’s watching, makes it more exciting and then you have the great big battle in the sky, a cool way to defeat an enemy, great episode in general although I think the fight could have reached its conclusion much earlier than it did.
Least Favourite Episode: I’m not sure of the episode, I think it was episode 172, Chopper vs. Gedatsu. That fight bored the living daylights out of me more so than you can imagine. Gedatsu didn’t have an interesting ability and so it sort of fell flat in general. I did like Chopper’s final attack though so it could have been worse.
Final Opinion: Entertaining arc that showcased One Piece at its best and worst.
Score: 8/10

I've never posted here before, but I have always liked reading ur reviews, like a lot of ppl said, it kinda gives u a fresh rewind to OP. Just a little suggestion though, I take it that u dont read the manga? If u dont, u really really should. I dont particularly like the anime, cause of the terrible pacing and lots of fillers. So I definitely think the manga is the way One Piece should be followed
-
I'm just warning you, this next arc is a filler arc. It is the best filler arc in the entire anime though, so you should better watch it.

I intend to at some point, maybe once I've finished the anime. If the pacing is as bad as I hear later on I'd rather be in the dark about what's filler and what's not as I might not enjoy it as much if an episode I liked was just filler or the other way round.

In this arc's case it shouldn't be a problem, since the arc is just as awesome as any canon arc.

The problem isn't filler arcs but canon episodes that are dragged on. Remember how slow Goku vs. Freeza fight (and how long it took) was? Yeah, the One Piece anime gets like that after about 50 or so more episodes.
-
It already started to drag in Skypiea.
-
that's like 150 episodes in. They had to slow the pacing down eventually or risk giving us tons and tons of filler arcs in a row.
-
Or, you know, animate all the other cover stories they skipped. And how awful would that have been?

Well actually they did that already with Buggy
-
Well actually they did that already with Buggy
They only animated Buggy and Coby's cover-stories. Everyone else got left out, even though several of them are plot-relevant. (For example, Jango's coverstory shows how he came to join the Navy. Not exactly a crucial detail, but if one hasn't read the coverstory, this twist comes completely out of nowhere.)

I meant in say an episode that has awful pacing, like it covers 6 pages or something I'd rather not know that the episode was awfully paced cause I think I would enjoy it more whereas if I knew it was dragged on I'd be like "Oh great, hurry up" beforehand, I'd lose some of the will to watch it if that makes any sense.
In other news off school today having been sick half the night and I'm going to try and watch a lot today. My goal is to catch up with One Piece by the end of the year which I think is possible which means more than 3 episodes per day from now on, more like 6
Episode 196: Emergency Official Announcement! Notorious Pirate Ship Infiltration!
This episode was a bit of a mixed one for me, I wouldn’t call it bad but neither would I call it good. G8 has potential to be a great filler arc but for me this episode didn’t really exploit the Straw Hats being in a marine base, I’m sure that’s to come but I would have rather this episode focused more on our heroes than some marines who think their ship is ghost one. Really enjoying the performances so far but it’ll be a few more episodes before I can properly decide who is my favourite; music wise pretty dam good, and the art seems a lot better and different, is this the episode when the show went HD? Not a lot else to comment on except liking where this arc is going, I just hope they use the advantages of being in a marine base to its full potential. Bon Voyage is a bit better in Japanese but I still don’t like it, not my kind of song. New ending is great, liking the tune and the singing, definitely one of the best so far. And one final note love the G8 mini song.
Score: 7/10
Episode 197: Sanji the Cook! Showing His Real Worth at the Marine Dining-room!
Now this is how a cooking episode should be handled, just like the Logue Town episode it was fun. Cooking’s a everyday part of life so in a show like this for me to like it the episode in question has to be fun amongst other things and this episode was. Luffy eating all 100 meals was classic and Sanji just being cool and making a great dish out of leftovers was neat. I liked the little side plots as well, the 2 brothers are amongst my favourite filler characters and even though it’s pretty much guaranteed that all 7 of them would escape it’s still exciting to see whether Nami or anyone else for that matter would be discovered. Zoro’s small part to play was excellent as well and what a cliff-hanger. Overall amazing episode and one of the if not the best filler episode yet.
Score: 10/10
Episode 198: Zoro's imprisonment and Chopper's Emergency Operation!
Like last time this episode focused on an everyday part of life and made it that bit more interesting. I don’t think One Piece has ever had the primary focus of an episode be something to do with doctors so it was certainly a welcome change. A highlight for this episode would be Nami’s little adventure, out of all the crew at the moment she seems to be the one that manages on having close encounters with the marines and for that reason alone I think hers is the best; initially I thought the doctor with the purple hair was her as she was reading up about operations or something similar. As for the main focus I enjoyed it a lot, I thought Chopper’s speech to the doctor about how she could save everyone was good if untrue. Zoro calmly recounting how they came down from heaven in a octopus balloon was another highlight too. Another great episode for sure, definitely the best filler arc yet.
Score: 10/10
Now to get some much needed rest and later this afternoon more One Piece.
-
G8 is the best filler arc, not only in One Piece, but in all animes I've known. Awesome animation and art, the plot is just terrific…I think you'll enjoy it!
-
So I was sick again yesterday and I didn’t really want to go sit in front of a laptop so I’ll probably watching 6 per day when I feel better which is hopefully soon.
Episode 199: The Search of the Approaching Marines! The Second Person Who Was Captured!
These reviews are going to get really repetitive because they’ll just be filled with praise for this fantastic arc. I haven’t enjoyed One Piece this much since the episode where they had to find the South Bird, hard to believe this is filler! The marine inspector story was excellent, as soon as Usopp declared he was in fact said person I went “Oh no” cause Robin had taken on the same guise as well and then of course long nose is captured. The parts with Luffy and Sanji were equally impressive, Luffy in Jonathan’s room devouring the meatballs had me smiling. Easily the best filler arc so far and I’ve only seen 4 episodes of it, can’t wait to find out what happens next.
Score: 10/10
Episode 200: Luffy and Sanji's Desperate Decision! Large Rescue Manoeuvres!
As much as I enjoyed this episode I don’t think it was as good as the last few episodes mainly because it lacked the excitement they produced. True the rescue of Zoro and Usopp was entertaining to watch with the flavour dial and all but it didn’t really captivate me as such. The real inspector being thrown in with the crew after Usopp claimed he was a straw hat and then they leave him bloody behind I thought was just plain careless although I would have done the exact same thing. As for the figure who fixed the Going Merry I’d forgotten about it, I wanted to know then and I want to know now: just who exactly fixed it, I’m guessing we’ll probably find out in the next canon arc. Overall pretty good episode although not G8’s best.
Score: 8/10
Episode 201: Hot Blood Special Unit Participation! Bridge Offensive and Defensive Battle!
Terrific episode, not only did it have a blend of action and suspense but in general it was just fun to watch. Nami and Chopper’s scenes were the best of the episode for me as suspense is the factor that I admire most about this arc thus far and their scenes had plenty of it, I really thought they would be discovered but goes to show what I know. As for the battle against the marines not bad at all, didn’t expect Luffy to destroy the bridge like he did Arlong Park as he can’t swim but then again he’s reckless. Not a lot else to say as there isn’t a lot of short scenes like episodes in say Skypiea but more long scenes that I’ve covered. Great episode in my humble opinion.
Score: 9/10

Why would your enjoyment of the anime matter once you've started reading the manga.

Zephos, you do know your signature isn't really appropriate for the anime section.

Episode 202: Smash the Barricade! The Going Merry is Recovered!
Not the best episode for a few simple reasons. The man being is that it was slow paced, not a lot happened in the 20 or so minutes which was a little annoying. Certain parts of the episode were good such as the battle against the marines but the rest didn’t interest me much. I was wondering what happened to Robin and why the crew were seemingly leaving her behind but it was a kinda cool if random moment when she came swinging in. I thought this would be the last episode of the arc when they seemingly smashed the gate but no doubt Nami’ll make them go back for the stolen treasure which in all fairness seems a little pointless. Solid episode overall but I didn’t enjoy it as much as I hoped.
Score: 8/10
Episode 203: The Missing pirate Ship! 2nd Round Assault on the Fortress!
This seemed a bit of an odd episode to have a flashback on the Going Merry, I would have thought the only time we’d be seeing one is should they ever get rid of the ship somehow. But it was nice to see clips from some episodes I hadn’t seen in ages; also I thought it was quite a clever idea to paint the ship as a marine one. Another thing that’s a little confusing is them suddenly deciding to get a maintenance man, especially seeing as it was filler. As for the episode itself I liked it, there wasn’t a lot going on so not a lot to discuss but I thought the scene where they were trying to steer the ship out of the path of some marine ships was pretty exciting.
Score: 8/10
Got a maths exam tomorrow, counts as part of my GCSE so it’s probably for the best if I revise hence I’ll only be watching 2 today.

Actually, the part where they are on the Going Merry IS in the manga. It takes place on the sea after Skypiea and the whole ship carpenter discussion sets up the next canon story arc.

Yea they do that sometimes, they add small canon parts to a filler arc and where are you?
