Please let Itagaki lose, I hate that bastard, I want him to get crushed and go all emo about it.
Hajime no Ippo

ya man, what happened at the end of the chapter really caugh me off guard(liked it even though i think Itagaki is ok). Happy he didn't run through the fight like he originally wanted to.
-
I hope Itgaki gets taken out of boxing altogether in this tournament and then his family falls back in to even worse poverty where his sister has to end up selling her self to support the family and Itgaki ends up hooked on meth and ketamine.
He annoys me a great deal.
-
I liked the other student better, Geromichi. At least with him we had some great gags going on.
-
@Zik:

As funny as this would be, that would be pretty f'd up(if anything they would start workin at ippo shop again)
-
How it is possible? I don't think..
Umm… it's possible in EXACTLY the way I stated it. I thought I was pretty clear. Miyata and Ippo's first match was a closed to the public match at Kamogawa Gym, you know. If Itagaki were to win the Class A, but is unable to legitimately challenge Ippo in a sanctioned match for the belt, I could easily see the two having a match of honor with one another, just for themselves and the rest of their gym. Think of the ending to Rocky 3, where Rocky and Apollo just want to have one more match, without the crowd or title on the line, just man to man.
Then after having proven himself, Ippo can feel accomplished on the Japanese Title stage and finally move into the World ranking matches more seriously, while Itagaki could use his Class A win to challenge in the match to determine the new champion competing for the relinquished Japanese Title.
And WOW, I am surprised at the level of hate people have for Itagaki here. He's great.
-
^I can this happening, agree all this hate is uneeded when u have woli to hate even more
-
Hey Strife, I don't really think you need to argue with that Hamon guy. Look at his posts…
-
Woli is just like a mindless no personality happy go lucky genius. What is there to hate?
Itagaki's personality is just mad pompous and his conflict is completely contrived and forced. Where does he get off trying to get with Ippo's woman? How dare he even entertain the thought. Then his sister who looks just like him is just as annoying. I think I said it before but he needs to make up his mind about leaving and challenging. He don't seem about that life if he's willing to wait. Even his rival looks down on him for that.
His fighting skills and improvement are cool though.
-
Hey Strife, I don't really think you need to argue with that Hamon guy. Look at his posts…
lol. Tbh, I'd never seen him before, but was just restating myself more clearly. But, yeah, you're right. :D
@Zik:
Woli is just like a mindless no personality happy go lucky genius. What is there to hate?
The mindless, no personality, happy go lucky, "I have every move in the game," broken, inconceivable, ridiculous, horrid character.
Itagaki's personality is just mad pompous and his conflict is completely contrived and forced.
He's not all that pompous. He's motivated. It's only come off like a pompous attitude recently, and MOST of that is from Takamura just saying "he's better than the other clowns in Kamogawa gym." He's a natural genius, but with limits. So he works hard.
And there ARE people who have really rough financial situations with their family. At least his family shows an example of unity and support. Despite their bad funds, they support him going after his dream in boxing. They have genuinely positive attitudes.
Where does he get off trying to get with Ippo's woman? How dare he even entertain the thought.
The woman Ippo has taken 900 chapters to barely start his relationship? And he's trying to get with her? From what I've seen, he LIKES Kumi, but hasn't flat out made a move on her. He knows Ippo loves her, and that Kumi feels the same about Ippo, but he still has feelings for her. He hasn't pulled anything where he is actually advancing on his feelings for her. Heck, the guy is so light-hearted, he just flirted with the reporter chick while having everything he craves lying in front of him.
Then his sister who looks just like him is just as annoying.
Because she has a crush on Ippo and actually acts on it? Ippo's oblivious as can be anyway. She's cute and good comic relief.
I think I said it before but he needs to make up his mind about leaving and challenging. He don't seem about that life if he's willing to wait. Even his rival looks down on him for that.
While it would be interesting to ME, either way, I really don't see any need for him to leave the gym. We already have that in Miyata, and Itagaki doesn't need to become the poor man's Miyata. Teasing the idea and upping the pressure amongst teammates, while driving the drama between them, but having a friendly and reuniting resolution between them is a much better story path, in my opinion.
His fighting skills and improvement are cool though
Damn skippy, they are.

I like the way you think, lets keep thumbs up for this to happen! Worst thing to happen is to Itagaki pull something like that bullet time shit again and beating Ippos record and coming out even more arrogant.
-
@Syan:
The mindless, no personality, happy go lucky, "I have every move in the game," broken, inconceivable, ridiculous, horrid character.
Well he is a genius. His lack of a personality wasn't anything to hate imo. Him knowing almost every move was cool and really set the bar imo.
He's not all that pompous. He's motivated. It's only come off like a pompous attitude recently, and MOST of that is from Takamura just saying "he's better than the other clowns in Kamogawa gym." He's a natural genius, but with limits. So he works hard.
Comes off pompous to me and what's his name described him perfectly in this recent chap. He's a conceited bastard. The shit he does isn't based on motivation. Bringing up Takamura is a good comparison, there's a guy who's a genius and works hard, has actually accomplished something so he has the right to boast and be an ass. Itagaki already thinks he's better than some and after beating someone grows a huge head and begins to think some fighters aren't in his league unlike Takamura who actually is good enough to know when he has a challenge and knows when he's fighting chicken shit.
And there ARE people who have really rough financial situations with their family. At least his family shows an example of unity and support. Despite their bad funds, they support him going after his dream in boxing. They have genuinely positive attitudes.
That shits irrelevant to me and doesn't really account for all of his personality imo.
The woman Ippo has taken 900 chapters to barely start his relationship? And he's trying to get with her? From what I've seen, he LIKES Kumi, but hasn't flat out made a move on her. He still comes off as a pompous ass in those scenes to me.
Because she has a crush on Ippo and actually acts on it? Ippo's oblivious as can be anyway. She's cute and good comic relief.
I just mentioned her cuz she's annoying too.
IMO Itagaki is a different type of genius than Miyata and I'd like to see him fight Ippo just so his dreams could be crushed and every rib/liver breaking blow would ground his ass.
At the end of the day Geromichi (before and after) > Itagaki when it comes to character.
-
@Zik:
Well he is a genius. His lack of a personality wasn't anything to hate imo. Him knowing almost every move was cool and really set the bar imo.
Knowing every move off of pure instinct is just stupid. I could have accepted insane speed and maneuverability with insanely good dodging capabilities, but when you add in using several moves that other fighters rely upon as their go to techniques after only 3 fights, it becomes ridiculous.
Woli was a piece of cardboard for personality. That is a reason to dislike him.
Comes off pompous to me and what's his name described him perfectly in this recent chap. He's a conceited bastard. The shit he does isn't based on motivation. That's complete BS. Takamura acted in exactly the same way at the very beginning of the series before ever stepping into a major match. Itagaki is SEVERAL years younger than Takamura at that point. Cut the guy some slack before judging him for being like Takamura.
Also, Itagaki still doesn't seem boastful to me. Itagaki just goes in smiling with complete and utter confidence that he will win, which is what a boxer SHOULD feel. Setting a goal to try and compare to the man he RESPECTS more than anyone else, Ippo, is more honor than disrespect any day.
That shits irrelevant to me and doesn't really account for all of his personality imo.
Oh, so background information on the guy's character is irrelevant to discussing his character? You brought up his family's money trouble, and I pointed out why that makes him a better and more developed character.
IMO Itagaki is a different type of genius than Miyata and I'd like to see him fight Ippo just so his dreams could be crushed and every rib/liver breaking blow would ground his ass.
I agree, Itagaki is a different type of genius than Miyata. Itagaki doesn't only use counters, he can be offensive as well. And he doesn't bore the hell out of me with his absolutely slow matches and weight drama. Not to mention Miyata's "I can't go all out unless it's the real match" trash.
At the end of the day Geromichi (before and after) > Itagaki when it comes to character.
Your opinion, but no way in hell is some fat ass who vomited at every turn, then shaved his eyebrows to get the opportunity to be beaten like a pathetic lump by Ippo better than Itagaki.
-
I hated Geromichi.

Still don't understand the hate for him. I'm completely indifferent towards him.
But as far as knowing moves off pure instinct is exactly why he's a genius. I don't know what's hard to get. Natural aptitudes come easy for geniuses.
That's complete BS. Takamura acted in exactly the same way at the very beginning of the series before ever stepping into a major match. Itagaki is SEVERAL years younger than Takamura at that point. Cut the guy some slack before judging him for being like Takamura.
Takamura was already one of the best and a rising star when the series started. I don't know what you're talking about. This isn't the same as a rookie in his first year of boxing. You can't equate Takamra's behavior and attitude to Itagaki's. The gap is far too wide as well as accomplishments go. He's the only character in the entire story where it's agreed by everyone that he's unreachable. He's basically a GOD.
Also, Itagaki still doesn't seem boastful to me. Itagaki just goes in smiling with complete and utter confidence that he will win
Smug attitude and over confidence.
which is what a boxer SHOULD feel. Setting a goal to try and compare to the man he RESPECTS more than anyone else, Ippo, is more honor than disrespect any day.
Boxer's shouldn't go about fighting with their guard down but I guess to you that's just his style despite it being pretty unrealistic after the boxer is put in a tight spot.
Oh, so background information on the guy's character is irrelevant to discussing his character? You brought up his family's money trouble, and I pointed out why that makes him a better and more developed character.
I brought up his family's money trouble in hopes that it'd get worse. It's irrelevant as far as what I'm talking about. The motivation Itagakai gets from his family's situation isn't solely I have to succeed in boxing for my family. Mashiba is more like that. Although that's part of Itagakai's character it doesn't account for his pompous attitude and blatant disrespect. His very first match he was displayed as a person that contained far too much hubris and paid for it.
Your opinion, but no way in hell is some fat ass who vomited at every turn, then shaved his eyebrows to get the opportunity to be beaten like a pathetic lump by Ippo better than Itagaki.
Yeah he is. Went from pathetic to a risky dangerous character with a mean streak due to his situation. Much better than watching Itagakai brood in Ippo's shadow, watch Ippo and Kumi from afar, hype and delude himself of his own ability only to get smacked around.
-
(Geromichi = Hammer Nao) > (Itagaki + Woli)/Miyata
SOLARPLEXUS PUUNCH!!!
-
I find this face highly satisfying.

Apparently, you forgot the flashback where it showed a young Takamura before his Japanese title win meeting Aoki and Kimura. He was just as cocky then.

His guard ISN'T down. Itagaki is taking the fight very seriously, but the simple fact is that he's an outboxer and doesn't have the hitting power of an in-fighter, so he has to be more risky if he is to meet his goal of beating Ippo's time.
-
What's with all the Itagaki hate? He's a cool character with genius ability. He works hard, respects his teachers, is gracious, funny, and he's crazy about the sport! His enthusiasm for boxing and the way he flips after a victory never gets old.
-
Apparently, you forgot the flashback where it showed a young Takamura before his Japanese title win meeting Aoki and Kimura. He was just as cocky then.
Wasn't that just cuz Takamura was a delinquent thug that never lost a fight? He had the right to be cocky in front of those 2 losers then too. I also specifically spoke on Takamura working hard and being a genius. He also never lost a boxing match when he started boxing and still has not lost a single fight.
So again, the gap between those two is the size of the grand canyon. They can't be compared

No. His actual guard is down throughout the entire fight like all of his fights. You know the guard you're suppose to keep up when boxing?
-

I didn't say Itagaki was on Takamura's level, flat out, I said they are both naturals and have big attitudes. Takamura is FAR more obnoxious with his cockiness than Itagaki's "I've got this" style confidence. Just because Itagaki lost one fight doesn't mean he's not a spectacular fighter. He redoubled his efforts and became much more serious after that loss and grew as a character.
Takamura was a thug with a big attitude who became a boxer with a big attitude. Doesn't make it more acceptable just because he won a belt. An asshole is an asshole. You judging Itagaki so childishly while praising Takamura's attitude is simply a moronic attempt at vindication.
No. His actual guard is down throughout the entire fight like all of his fights. You know the guard you're suppose to keep up when boxing?
That's his style. He still BLOCKS and DODGES. That makes up a guard than having a particular stance. Ippo is the ONLY character who is sitting in the peek-a-boo all day.
-
This manga always needs more Takamura.
-

The reason why it's acceptable for Takamura is because he is UNDEFEATED.
He's NEVER LOST A MATCH.
That's the difference between the two.
You don't get a slide on your cockiness when you've already lost in an embarrassing way and the reason you lost was because of your cockiness.
Also Takamura is hilarious with his boasting, general I'm better than you attitude, and pranks due to his status. The obnoxious angle is only to torture the two guys that always lose and to motivate Ippo. I'm not praising Takamura, cuz he is funny and his attitude definitely doesn't come off the same way Itagaki's does who happens to be quite annoying. The difference between the two when it comes to personality or any similarity you feel is fine for the other in the ring or out is night and day.
I'd like you to direct me to where I said Itagaki wasn't a good fighter because he lost a fight or were you just filling space with that statement and others?
FYI, of course he would grow a bit after having such an obvious character flaw. Problem is the author has shown that same flaw continues to bite him in the ass.
That's his style.
LOL This is exactly what I said you say when I brought it up.
Ippo is the ONLY character who is sitting in the peek-a-boo all day.
Really has nothing to do with what I'm talking about. Don't know why you're going from one extreme to another. I didn't say Itagaki should be in the peek a boo stance the entire fight like Ippo.
-
@Zik:
I'd like you to direct me to where I said Itagaki wasn't a good fighter because he lost a fight or were you just filling space with that statement and others?
I never said you said he wasn't a good fighter. I was making a point, and the fact that he is a good fighter pertained to said point.
LOL This is exactly what I said you say when I brought it up.
Because it IS his style. All throughout the recent chapters you see him putting his guard up. Continuously. When does he have his guard dropped? When he is going for a counter, which is his ONLY shot at a fast KO. The whole plan he has set up for this match. If his guard was up, he wouldn't be open and in position for a counter.
Really has nothing to do with what I'm talking about. Don't know why you're going from one extreme to another. I didn't say Itagaki should be in the peek a boo stance the entire fight like Ippo.
I didn't say that you said that either. Just because I am discussing something with you, then make a statement of my own that is relevant to the conversation, does NOT mean that I am saying that was what you meant.
-
@Syan:
I never said you said he wasn't a good fighter. I was making a point, and the fact that he is a good fighter pertained to said point.
It was kinda irrelevant since that statement was never challenged and is already established within the argument.

I'm sorry but dude routinely keeps his guard down even when he isn't going for counters. He'll keep his guard down when dodging and trying to set up with some jabs. No guard is only a style when throughout the fight you're successful with it. The author even made it a point to say even though he's oblivious to why his counters are failing he still keeps his guard down taking every single punch. We've learned from Takamura, Ippo, and Miyata that keeping your guard up can save you in a match when you're wide open and a counter is coming.
I didn't say that you said that either. Just because I am discussing something with you, then make a statement of my own that is relevant to the conversation, does NOT mean that I am saying that was what you meant.
Excuse me for thinking you were trying to make points to support your side of the argument and not stating miscellaneous facts in the middle of them. I tend to call bs when I argue something like Itagaki is a cocky prick while mentioning he's a genius fighter and has impressive skill to get a reply like "Itagaki isn't annoying. Itagaki isn't a bad fighter."
-

That's flat out not true. In the recent chapter, when he went for the counter the second time, he was only saved from being knocked down again because he expected a hit and braced his guard. If you look at the panels throughout, it is obvious he puts his guard up.

They aren't miscellaneous facts. They are facts about Itagaki during a conversation about Itagaki. You seem to be zeroing in on small portions instead of the statement as a whole.
I don't find him annoying. I greatly enjoy his character, and the little Itagaki spirits who hover about him during the match. He WOULD have won this match already if it weren't for the special strategy that Sanada helped Karasawa develop to screw with Itagaki's perception. That much is clear, and so he deserves to have his confidence up, but the strategy was sound and has gotten him confused. He'll volley back in it in the next few chapters and nail the timing.
I'll just say that I like him, and you are being WAY too critical of him. But whatever, lots of people don't like Vegeta for mostly the same reasons, but he's my fave in DB, so enjoy hating a good character, I guess.
-
Please don't compare Itagaki and Vageta. Please.
-
Takamura is an ass.. but in the bottom sometimes he cares for the others… a bit xD
also comparing itagaki and vegeta... wtf
-
Ay yi yi! I didn't mean specifically that Itagaki and Vegeta were completely similar characters, they just both have confidence issues which have led them to disastrous losses, but continue to carry their pride. Not saying he was based on Vegeta or anything.
-
@Syan:

That's where you lose me since I'm talking about specific things about Itagaki not if he's a good fighter or not. No one has said he isn't a good fighter. I don't even know how that helps your argument since I'm talking about his personality as a character.

Well this is exactly why the author is successful. He tells a compelling story. Nobody wants to see Itagaki just cruising the tournament after it was hyped up so much and the fighters have trained hard for it. Especially with this challenge Itagaki imposed upon himself. Of course he's poised for a come back, this is not really news and I don't see how this doesn't make him annoying.
I'll just say that I like him, and you are being WAY too critical of him. But whatever, lots of people don't like Vegeta for mostly the same reasons, but he's my fave in DB, so enjoy hating a good character, I guess.
Don't mind Vegeta at all. LOL @ comparing Itagakai to Vegeta.
-
I Agree with you guys in different ways. I'm glad that we had a argument battle in the Hajime No Ippo topic. It al most look like that the series is Populair.
It really sucks that Hajime No Ippo DVD (Witch are really expensive) are hard to find and that the manga will never be released in the U.S.A or my country.
Can't wait for the next chapter espcially that One Piece has a break.
-
Well, that was a fun debate. I don't see Itagaki cruising through this tournament and anyone can quote me on it. He's going to get bloody, extremely tired, hurt, and pushed to his very limits. He may not even win. I don't know, but his sensei did it so he stands a good chance too.
Instead of his sensei's monstrous stamina and power he is a genius fighter with natural ability far exceeding normal capacity. I think both quality sets are just as handy, it all depends on how well you use and develop them.
-
^For sure. His match with Saeki is going to be even tougher, I bet, seeing as how he's getting information about Itagaki's mindset from Ippo himself. Itagaki can't trap and pressure the way Sendo did to Saeki, so it's going to be another difficult match. I do think he will win, however. Itagaki got the Rookie King, I can't see him losing Class A.
-
Takamura needs to fight in a serious bout already. Preferably the next weight class (super-middleweight) championship title bout.
-
Chapter 906 is out!
-
Nice chap. The author knows the deal with the annoying fly.
Looks like he's obviously going to fail with his goal but still win though, especially if he takes Ippo's desperation short term goal each round approach. For a minute I thought he was going to figure out that he isn't slightly slower and the trick being played on him.
-
I really hoped that Itagaki would get pulverized and become nerve wrecked after match but I guess he will win afterall…
He wont beat Ippos record and even will be so sweet but he will most likely win, even though he does not deserve it...
-
He's still got time to beat Ippo's record…
-
You expect him to figure out what Karasawa is doing, create a counterattack for it, and knock him out in a minute?
-
You find it impossible?
-
Yeah, he's going to win…too bad. But maybe he won't be as annoying after this? Maybe?
He won't win within a minute though, that would be ridiculous.
-
He won't knock him out in a minute, I figured that since he's decided to adopt Ippo's build up strategy. I like this turn of events. Instead of desperately trying to surpass his sensei he's now fully concentrating on the match. He has a better goal than beat the clock. Win. I admire him for trying to outdo Ippo but I admire him even more for coming to his senses and realizing if he can't obtain one goal might as well try for the better goal.
-
@Syan:
You find it impossible?
I find that to be pretty bad plot development. This isn't Bleach where he can just suddenly find a hidden power and overpower his opponent especially within a minute where he would have to decisively knock out his opponent.
-
Isn't that likely to happen when he finds out that his just being tricked? The guy already is faster, its like discovering your superpowers back in just minutes and KABOOOM… a successful Jolt.
But.... that would be not that interesting to look up to. We just barely survived from the Ippo Woli hurricane.
-
@Zik:

Yeah right, just about his last match where he suddenly discovered Bullet time? I am sure Itagaki will pull something out of his ass and suddenly easily dominate rest of the match…
-
Yeah right, just about his last match where he suddenly discovered Bullet time? I am sure Itagaki will pull something out of his ass and suddenly easily dominate rest of the match…
That was because of who he was fighting and if you think he's going to win within a minute you're ignoring a lot of what makes this manga any good.
We saw Ippo have a hard ass time in the class A tournament. Itagaki isn't going to win the whole thing and reach all of his do better than Ippo goals as well.
He's been portrayed as an over confident fighter that is still very inexperienced despite his skills and potential talent. You all are basically saying he's going to figure out the trick, figure out a proper counter and knock him out with a jolt in 60 seconds ignoring Karasawa altogether.
-
@Zik:

I really hope it wont happen like that but I fear its still in range of possibilty… Itagaki will most likely end up winner but its either by taking it step by step or he can do something drastic like going for in-fighting and deliver suprise KO-combo that ends match right there.
Itagaki is outfighter and he should have not that much strenght opposed his amazing speed but its still possible that he pulls of 'desperate' stunt and pulls it off, even winning the match.
I really hope Itagaki would lose but its very very unlikely but I hope atleast that he wont win so damn easily either.

I'll say it now I feel if Karasawa is hit with a jolt in this round he'll get up. He's already recovered from the counters and jabs Itagaki gave him last round.
If there's one thing we can count on in this manga is the will of the opponent. Once Karsawa gets knocked down we'll see some inner monologue or mini flashback about how hard he trained after losing to Ippo and how he dreams of fighting him again and maybe even another trick or some secret weapon/technique/last ditch strategy that'll make him get up for the 3rd round and Itagaki will realize he shouldn't underestimate his opponents.
In the end I don't think Itagaki will lose even though I'd like to see that.

Somewhat, but Karasawa is also throwing out his own pride by using a strategy that he was said to think was cheap. If Itagaki hits a full power Jolt on Karasawa when he is using a strategy that he doesn't love using, but is confident in, Karasawa is more than likely to be caught HEAVILY off-guard and get KOed.
If Itagaki wins, but is not even close to Ippo's time (I'm still saying he's going to be within a few seconds of Ippo's time, possibly even tie it), then it would completely write off Itagaki as the successor of Ippo.

The way I saw it is Itagaki would figure out Karasawa's cheap trick and make sure he's right first, meaning he'd adjust his speed or something to get a counter or a jab in. At that point Karsawa would be a little more alert even if he doesn't know if Itagaki figured out the trick.
Itagaki just figuring it out and jolting him for a K.O. would feel cheap imo but maybe this fight wasn't planned to be too long. I'm just factor in everything as the fight progresses and there'll be a part where everybody watching comments on Itagaki possibly losing soon and then comments after he turns things around.
Itagaki just figuring it out and jolting him for the win is too Takamura like.
