"One Piece" like any anime isn't the exact same story as the original manga but that doesn't make it any better or worse, just different.
Thank you.

Really, of course there will be differences here and there…
But unless you look at it all magnified like almost every freak'n fan here does, it all shouldn't matter.
I follow both, I enjoy both. I consider both of them basically the same experience.
I could over analyze both and settle down with an answer stating their differences.... But then I remember that this a fucking comic/cartoon, and i'm not gonna waste my time doing so. 'Cause I just don't effing care that much about that aspect, you see. Point being...
Just enjoy 'em, shit.
Man, I hate to say it but I was pretty disappointed with this movie and it sounds like other people were too. I watched it the other day, and I was just excited enough that it felt special without being so psyched that I was putting undue expectations on it. At first I was like "well Oda does like his wacky animals! This is just a fun intro, of course…" but then I was greeted by several very unfunny attempts at humour courtesy of Shiki and his crew.
The problem is that it really doesn't move too far past this. It has a very "movie only" kind of plotline, despite supposedly being from the pen of Oda. There's never any real sense of peril, they just kind of jump around, doing quick fights, shouting a lot. It's One Piece, but without the amazing and epic storyline, without the emotional pull. I also really hate the Thriller Bark/Impel Down school of villain design. Sure, do wacky designs. A merman with a swordfish nose is wacky, a clown that can separate into small pieces and fly around is wacky, a guy with an iron jaw who can eat anything is wacky - but they're also menacing. Crocodile and some of the other villains are played pretty straight and deadly. You have the three totally different Admirals, embodying different senses of justice in three deadly ways.
And then you have a big goat guy who is constantly shitting and farting... You have a pink gorilla who HILARIOUSLY pretends he has to mime all the time, you have a blue clown who has shoes that make fart noises when he walks... Why not just have Barney the Dinosaur and Deputy Dawg as the main bad guys of One Piece? That'd be awesome right! Don't forget to make them both fart all the time too, y'know, for added menace.
i think of the anime and the manga as two separate entities. i do not compare them. though i do favor the anime.
Extremely disappointed by this movie. All that hype for a movie full of Robin and Nami fanservice that basically bored me to tears. Of course, the same could be said about the 7th one..

lol, anyone who says this is the one who only watches cartoons.
This is the basics of story consumption from literature to musicals to movies.
If I could be some dullard immune to quality control maybe I would be, but this whole world you can't even fathom as a taste budless paper bag of a critic, is that guess what. People who don't like things? They generally aren't TRYING to not like things. The thing doesn't work for them and that's that. And by god they say so.
Now go chew on a spinach leaf and call it a gourmet meal. You can't tell the fucking difference anyway.
They're not the same experience but if it's the same story pretty much verbatim I don't really see much of reason to compare so much. "One Piece" like any anime isn't the exact same story as the original manga but that doesn't make it any better or worse, just different.
Of course one is disadvantaged. You're pairing an animation studio that makes frequent use of foreign sweatshops to the authors original vision?
lol, yeah, "different", that's the issue here.
Thank you.

I don't usually level this accusation at others, but you're sniveling BAWWWing in this thread really pins you as the type to define both trolling and lack of reason as literally someone disagreeing with your views.
So sit down, zip it and let people like Firecroutch do the talking.
Whining adds nothing.
A BLOO BLOO TEH MEAN MAN SAY BAD ABOUTT MY CARTOON
My big big big big big problem with the anime is after Alabasta, pacing took a turn for the worst. Eneis Lobby seemed way longer than it ever did in the manga, and while Impel Down was a fair size in both versions, there is no reason it should have been that long in the anime. Granted, so far (the two whole episodes) Marineford has been pretty good, but it's still like a chapter per episode, sometimes not even that! The reason they've been up to snuff, I chalk up to music cues and use of dramatic tension.
I also don't like the inconsistent art. It didn't really hit me until about Eneis Lobby, but it had been steadily getting inconsistent and (not to mention more stagnant animation) around Skypiea. It's kind of ridiculous that people have to be excited about a particular episode because a certain animation director is attached.
Regardless of how I feel, I still watch it from time to time because a) I enjoy the voice actors immensely, b) I am curious as to how certain scenes are handled, c) I kind of have to for certain episodes of the podcast.
Whenever someone I know wants to get into OP, I tell them to read the manga. Or if they MUST watch the anime, to watch the first 130 episodes and go from there because it's questionable after that. If you stick solely to the anime, you are DEFINITELY missing out.

I think I found the root of your problem.
You can't handle anything over one new character per two hours since you've managed to completely mess up the only three you were presented with.
In fact…I'm still trying to figure out this 'goat' character you speak of.
Keep pushing buddy, your ass will be banned before you know it.
Oh no what would I ever do then lol
But mostly, telling people the anime isn't good is not ban worthy just because it makes you cry. At least I'm pretty sure.

No, but flaming all the other posters and being generally offensive to everyone is I'm afraid.
I basically don't watch the anime. I only watch the episodes I am interested in. I have a lot of AMV though.
The anime is quite good, because One Piece's story is really great, but the manga is far better.

Dan's first post recently:
I hate pompous arseholes who like to get on their soapboxes and preach about how the manga is soooo much better and people should stop watching and enjoying the anime.
I wonder what he was trying to accomplish with this.
I really hope the Anime doesn't report me for me calling it an "anemic clown version", I know inanimate studio properties tend to be very sensitive.
I wonder what he was trying to accomplish with this.
I was expressing my annoyance at people who put down others solely for enjoying something they don't. I thought that was obvious.
Anime is good for family.
There's no way my dad is going to read tiny-ass print Japanese OR English. But he loves the stories.
Enter anime.
Each year we sit down and watch a year of the animation and it's great. I can skip through the bullshit and I know the story well enough to fill in the blanks.
"oh yeah, Hachi actually got that ship through a series of random acts of kindness OR By the way, the wings are important BECAUSE Ener actually…" etc.
But sweet Jesus. I could NEVER imagine watching the series anime only.

I found a fanmade Calvin and Hobbes animated short on YouTube and despite being in a LANGUAGE I DON'T SPEAK/UNDERSTAND even though I started to watch it, I had to turn it off before Calvin spoke. I can't imagine what that'd do to it every time I read it.

Don't worry, the wonder was rhetorical
I know exactly what you were "expressing".
I was expressing my annoyance at people who put down others solely for enjoying something they don't. I thought that was obvious.
I know, look I apologized to the Anime, and I'm pretty sure it accepted it. Why do you have to keep this burning?? The Anime's moved on and it's already back to repeating animation frames on a guy punching a wall like normal.
You really don't need to instigate this further.
Alright, just saw this movie
Quick comments
-I'm 100% this movie looks even more awesome and completely mesmerizing on the Cinema, it was really really good
-Brook's attacks were all very well animated, the Anime tends to give Brook the short end of the stick, but this time, him finishing off those spiders was awesome
-Kishi is absolutely amazing, Toei (or rather, Oda) did a really good job in making him look like one of the strongest men in the world but still giving him a credible loss against Luffy (the bird, underestimation and the whole situation where he was)
-It'd be nice to consider this Movie canon, I'l consider it canon as of now, but if Oda introduces Kishi later down the line without any mention of what happened, then I guess I'l grumble and put this on the filler box.
-The filler kid and the filler village was the worst thing ever, as usual, this time being particularly stupid, what with them flying and shit.

I like when the background "animated characters" freeze when the character in the focus talks with his "animated mouth".
Great animation there. And i mean it is like that 95% of the time. How can't it be better than the manga?
Oh my, I've been missing quite a lot in this thread, haven't I?
I've kept away from this not to be spoiled about the movie, but seems like I just missed an awesome discussion going on
BRB, gonna read it all

My Goda have pity of your soul
You manga-is-god people can't deny that you watched the anime in order to hear Ivankov's voice.
You manga-is-god people can't deny that you watched the anime in order to hear Ivankov's voice.
I didn't. Personally I don't care who sounds like what because I don't bother trying to imagine a characters voice in my head while I'm reading.
You manga-is-god people can't deny that you watched the anime in order to hear Ivankov's voice.
And what do you want to say with that?
You manga-is-god people can't deny that you watched the anime in order to hear Ivankov's voice.
I'm not sure I understand your point. I don't think we'd really have any right to criticize the anime if we didn't watch it every now and then… so...
You manga-is-god people can't deny that you watched the anime in order to hear Ivankov's voice.
Why would you think that.
I think its because Oda mentioned Ivankov's voice actor in the SBS.
I couldn't care less but ok some people might have interest in those things.
You manga-is-god people can't deny that you watched the anime in order to hear Ivankov's voice.
Don't tell me you don't read the manga. I also started with the anime, but after I see this was a really great story, I thought I needed to see how the real creator wanted us to view it. I mean the real One Piece is the comics books. If you like this story so much you register to this forum, you should really read the manga.

That's really well put, but I'd take it a step further even: anime is good for new fans. Once you've finished watching, or as you are watching, give them the manga and say: "this is actually how it goes." Personally, I am a big fan of the anime (though it's not what it used to be): it has amazing music, some amazing visuals, and some amazing seiyuu (particularly in the secondary characters). It's certainly not the primary One Piece experience, but it's perfect sometimes when you just want to sit down and watch something, or introduce someone to the One Piece universe.
Shit, I know I'm very late…
@Zach:
So sorry Mr. February 2010, I'll leave right away. Sorry to impose on your forum.
But I also want to add my "lol" on this
You manga-is-god people can't deny that you watched the anime in order to hear Ivankov's voice.
Last time I watched the anime was to see Kuma pawing away the crew, and before that, Binks sake. I have no idea what Ivanokov sounds like, and don't much care. I hardly ever watch the anime, its been pretty lousy with the pacing since after Alabasta.
I've heard horror stories about how filler was added to the Davy Back fight and ruined it entirely. Glad I missed out on that.
Hancock is apparently the voice of Sailor Moon. Yeah. Don't care to add that to my impression of the character.
I prefer the anime. I'm not saying the anime version is better then the manga version, just that I prefer watching the anime then reading the manga. I can't really tell you why because the only reason I can think of is, I just do.
I know the anime doesn't do everything perfect, but what does? Whether it is an anime, a TV show, or a movie, nothing based off a book or a comic does everything perfect.
And tell me why the people who like the anime better then the manga aren't "true fans"?
So what's this thread about again? Something about a goat man and a man with farting shoes?
@robbybedfart:
.

It didn't ruin it entirely, but some of it was just too silly for my tastes.
But yeah back on topic, the shitting and farting goat man I guessed was Magellan, but he wasn't in Movie 10 so that doesn't count. I dunno I guess Shiki is hairy like a goat, but he doesn't fart and shit all over the place, just makes bad gags.
@robbybedfart:

They changed the ending of Tonjit and the crew meeting Ao Kiji to Tonjit and the crew meeting his super mole son. Basically they threww out the entire purpose of the arc and made it bona fide filler.
@robbybedfart:

Eh, her voice is actually pretty fitting .

Accuracy? Do you really think that's the issue? Really?
And tell me why the people who like the anime better then the manga aren't "true fans"?
Basically because the "true" One Piece is the one Oda drew.
Basically because the "true" One Piece is the one Oda drew.
Yeah that's all it really comes down to, being the original version. I get the reason but I still think it's kind of shallow. "One Piece" is "One Piece" regardless and it doesn't matter which version came first..

Don't even pretend the author is shallow as a reason.
@JERK:
Don't even pretend the author is shallow as a reason.
You must've misunderstood what I was saying. I'm saying it doesn't really matter what was the original, what was the adaptation, there's no such thing as a true fan. You can like whatever you want for whatever reason and still be just as much of a fan as anyone else. There's really no such thing as a true fan.
I know the anime doesn't do everything perfect, but what does? Whether it is an anime, a TV show, or a movie, nothing based off a book or a comic does everything perfect.
And tell me why the people who like the anime better then the manga aren't "true fans"?
The hate from the anime can be found in any remake of anything. There's fans everywhere that will hate remakes because they don't carry the original author's vision.
And anybody that likes the anime more than the manga are fans and they like One Piece, but the manga is One Piece. If people don't like the manga but they like the anime, then they're not One Piece fans. If you like it better…well that's your opinion. It's just Oda's story is Oda's story, and to some, anything less isn't as great.
Comparing the anime to the manga is like comparing the 4kids version to the original version.
And before any flaming comes, regardless of people's opinions of the hatred of the 4kids version, the basic arguments boil down to be the same :
there's stuff that edited from the original
the copy will never be the same as the original
voices don't match, music doesn't match etc.
pacing problems(though 4kids tried to keep it short while the original anime stretches everything)
These arguments could be applied to any book made movie or any remakes period.
And even though 4kids has near universal hatred of one piece, there's still some aspects of it that can be enjoyable. The anime does have it's flaws...but it's a good representation of One Piece that could be a lot worse.
It didn't ruin it entirely, but some of it was just too silly for my tastes.
This is the only arc IMO where One Piece is severely poorly represented. This was horrid.
According to DBF, Luffy thinks Shelly is more important than Chopper.
Losing crewmates doesn't matter in the DBF as long as you have an all or nothing bet, and even then as long as they're "dismissed" I guess you can reunite later on the seas.
Foxy and co. became "Team Rocket" in the anime.
The anime writers didn't know about Chopper's rumble ball rules so they messed up there.
The games weren't that bad for filler games, but that final bet…but this is more about me hoping that the DBF or just Foxy would become important in the future and the anime crushing these dreams with their shenanigans. They just seemed to throw the rules and any vision of Foxy as anything but comic relief off the table.
You must've misunderstood what I was saying. I'm saying it doesn't really matter what was the original, what was the adaptation, there's no such thing as a true fan. You can like whatever you want for whatever reason and still be just as much of a fan as anyone else. There's really no such thing as a true fan.
It does matter which came first, this is what decides canon.
And for someone to never even experience that for the always shallow reasons (seriously, name me one good one), is just ridiculous.
I am a blind man, and the manga isn't printed in braile. So I need the audio of the voices and the sound effects to follow the story.
The anime is so much more time consuming too. All those 20 minute episodes. I can read a manga chapter in like two minutes, less if it's fighting.
@JERK:
It does matter which came first, this is what decides canon.
Why does that even matter? I'm talking about appreciating and enjoying something, not what makes something the author's original intent.
@robbybedfart:
I am a blind man, and the manga isn't printed in braile. So I need the audio of the voices and the sound effects to follow the story.
You guys really should stop using arguments like the above (and its variant "Derp derp, you don't have imagination, so you can't follow images")
If the Anime was well animated and had good pacing, it would be better than the Manga, because if that was true, it would pick what the Manga had and it would had good elements to it
Would you still use this type of arguments if it was like that?
Who cares about "who's the better/truer/shittier fan"? We're just pointing out why the manga is better than the anime.
I for example started to watch the anime untill Arlong park and then started reading the manga - everything was far more better in the manga than the anime, the emotions it unleashed more genuine, even the fights were very well done in the manga and didn't need any animation to be understood.
I kept on watching the anime afterwards, skipping the fillers, untill eventually I didn't give a damn about it.
