They called the shots. They were immigrants, freed slaves from the US who thought the idea of going back to Africa and making their own state was cool. They were hugely obsessed with all the same ideas of European colonialism, forcing concepts of their religion and modernization on the local populace.
In a way the first imperialists in the Scramble for Africa were Africans. They beat the scramble by over 50 years.

I watched some days ago a doc on Equatorial Guinea ; that is a real maffia state.
-
Yeah, EG and Gabon have oil and shit and make a bunch of money more then most African countries also due to small populations. They have higher HDI then almost all the rest at least but it should be even higher if not for the corruption that funnels most of the funds away to top dogs.
Looking at Africa right now the high HDI's aside from islands are countries like thta, Libya being another ranker.
So I gotta plug for my horse Botswana again, gonna beat their HDI's eventually without corruption and poor democracy!
-
Speaking of which it's too easy to think of third world countries as the same in temrs of prosperity except maybe South America and Eastern Europe who are like…low rent first world in some ways.
But I mean, using the HDI (see my other thread). The difference between a country like Botswana and Liberia is the same difference between Botswana and places like Singapore.
Third world is a poor term really, we need more categories.
-
Third World is an incredibly outdated term anyways, since it stems from McCarthyism/Cold War era politics. Just labeling almost half the world as "everyone else/people we don't give a fuck about" is a pretty big blanket.
-
Yeah, there's better ways to do it, HDI being my personal fave. Though looking at stability, political freedom, GDP and the like all at once is ideal.
After all can we really keep using First and Third world when the Second world is an obsolete term?
-
90% of Vietnam's population don't know what third world means.
5% thought it means the neutral countries that didn't participate in WWII.
Clean your inbox Zephos. I can't pm you now.

Do you have any idea that you want me to draw? Like reaction images. I think that Kuma-Perona pic you did was cool.BTW, I am going to do a comic like National Coronation Day (if I have enough time), with the main villain is Brennen.exe . It is about his plot to get rid of good posters in the forum (inspired by the recent bans since SMUDGE and Bad-beat) and keep the e1n out of business. I don't know enough about this forum so I think you would be a big help.

They are costing computer users millions with their sneakware system of promotional crap!We have New York Asian Escort some serious problems. These narcissistic bugger programmers that develop application and browser hijackers, pop-up pushers, adware scam New York Asian Escort and other bogus blots of code that only make life worse, need to be taught a lesson or two.

Hmmmm - Just found this thread by chance moving into the outer areas of the forums I was not aware existed O.o
JD - I appologise for thinking what I thought about you - no need for me to air it but this is really interesting stuff - wish I could view more of it at work - hope to contribute some more to it on my days off.

"This video contains content from Channel 4, who has blocked it in your country on copyright grounds."
Errr wtf….Channel 4 is a network FROM MY FUCKING COUNTRY, how is this possible.
Could you post the title of the docu separately please, so I can search for it myself.

Any idea what style of comic you'll go for? Perhaps the POW, ZAP, ZOOM style panels seen in the early batman series would be worth incorporating.

I'd imagine Channel 4 wants us to watch it on their website where they earn ad revenue.

aye proud of that i am. seeing libya develop so finely in a short 40 years is a site to behold. some may say gedafi is an ass but he really did what was best.
the sad part is all the useless fighting going on in other countries namely sudan right now. wasting all theyre money on weapons all the time. -
Yeah, Libya is kind of just an example of good dictatorshipping I guess. Small population and oil is always nice too.
-
Also this years HDI should boost Libya up a level of green into the Poland/Mexico shade.
It's going to stand out so insanely in Africa it's not even funny.

its already standing out too much :s

I wonder just how much Blair got involved with Gadaffi.

@bartholemew:

Yeah, it already is with it's lime green rank.
The normal green will be plain nuts.
The fact that it borders the worst ranked country in Africa (and the world) makes it all the crazier. Niger is gonna feel something awful when they look at this years HDI. -
i reckon its cause the other countries are vastly over populated and cannot keep up with the peoples needs. egypt is somewhere at 80 million, while libya is prolly 7 million maximum
-
@OP: Although I am generally not interested in Politics/Geography, what I have seen of the stuff you posted so far was quite instructive.
Keeps an eye on thread

Niger's problem is it's just a bunch of goddamned sand and dying grasslands. And landlocked to boot.
Good luck to any country pulling yourself into shape with those settings.
Though to be fair Botswana isn't all that different. If Niger can find an extremely lucrative export like they did maybe they can turn that ship around.
Apparently they do have oil and are only just starting to sell it. Could do wonders. Problem is then that they have little political stability and corruption issues. Unlike Libya with one dictator since the 60's, and Botswana with working democracy since the same.Bottom line is unless the government lets that money go back into the community instead of just having it build up in monopolized company pockets, or smuggling it into their own, it's not going to do much of anything.
Western Europe's riches made in the 1800's wouldn't have equaled the modern first world if not for concepts of social infrastructure becoming common place. -

Did you follow Gaddafi's exploits when he visited Italy in like Dec 09/Jan 10? This guy is fucking hilarious, he visits the Italian PM with a picture of Omar al-Mukhtar pinned to his lapel, he travels with an all-female bodyguard platoon, and if I recall correctly he had some hostess hire about 500 Italian women.
They thought they were going to a top dinner with the heads of state, instead he personally delivered a 3 hour lecture on women and Islam to the contingent.
Wasn't he elected the chairman of the African Union or something too?
-
The funniest Gaddafi related thing is when one of the Jersey Shore girls thought he was Lionel Richie when presented with a picture of him on a show.

I laughed when I noticed the cringed expression on severals faces. He's actually pretty solid throughout though. -
Competent autoritarian democracies sort of work, don't they.
Singapore or China or Libiya are becoming quite a sight on a geopolitical map.

I am having to watch the China: A Century of Revolution for my Intro into Modern China class. The first one was really interesting, I have a better idea of some Chinese history and can follow in class now. Haven't watched the other two yet.

Don't misunderstand me, I don't really know anything about Libya, so I'm not going to talk shit about something I don't know/care, but that fucker took 2 swiss hostages a year ago and everybody made a big deal about it.
Seriously, people here wouldn't shut the fuck up about it for months, and I had to hear around 20 bad Gaddafi jokes a day.
Thanks god both of them are back, I was really close to lose it. -

Just watched the Burma thing.
Put together very well.

Also, don't know entirely what went on, but LOL@ that U.N. clip. -
can someone tell me what sumdger's vid was about

this is all good stuff. anyone know anything good on ancient china/japan? i just read sun tzu and it exposed how little i know about the early developement of asian civilisation compared to what i know of ancient europe/africa/south america.

Japan didn't really matter until pretty late in history considering.
China on the other hand… -
@JERK:
Japan didn't really matter until pretty late in history considering.
China on the other hand…any suggestions as to some informative material? i could just do the research myself, but recommendations always make the process easier. china is also one of the few geographical areas which i never studied in history. essentially all i know of its early existance was that it was big, powerful, and fairly isolated compared to other developing cultures to the west.
-
Sadly no.
China is pretty geographically isolated from the Euro-Indo-Arab funland of the west but they still made contact through routes and stuff.Chinese history is in a nutshell a bunch of periods of stability and development followed by periods of disunity and nomads from the north fucking with them.
-
China was fucking with Vietnam many times.
But since 905 we always pushed them out. After about a millennium of domination, Vietnam officially gained independence from China, in 938.
