Awesome. I can't wait.
Don't get why Square-Enix doesn't want to publish it, though.

Nintendo really want to push DQIX to make it more popular in America like it is in Japan so I guess they took over publishing the game so they can advertise it better.
Would like a better release date than "summer" though.

Isn't it a little too late and impossible with all the Final Fantasy and Western RPG fans running about?
Release dates:
July 11, 2010 (US)
July 23, 2010 (EU)
Good games?
Released over the summer?
Well I never…!
Damn. Heart Gold/Soul Silver, Mario Galaxy 2, Monster Hunter Tri, Metroid Other M and This all in the space of a few months (UK anyways.)
Nintendo. Stop spoiling us~
sweet, bout damn time. been waiting for this for a long time. i hate when games come out in japan first, i mean really how hard is it to localize something.
It's hardly expected to sell well, so why would they rush it.

Considering it was made in Japan…yeah. Lets give it to them last!
Games like this however I can understand. Just think of the amount of text and stuff they have to translate.

In a fighting game? When they have a couple win phrases, menus, and some character names to translate? Maybe demo mode? Not very hard.
In an RPG? When they have thou…. nevermind. please just tell me you were being sarcastic there.

Didn't DQ 4 Sell more than pretty much everything on the 360 the month it came out? XD
Or maybe that was just in the UK. I do remember it happening.
DQV sold a lot less then IV though.
Paradoxically, V is of infinitely higher quality.
and based on your consistent reccomendation Darkstorm, I finally said "screw it" and plunked down the coin to order DQV.
Its apparently never gonna be cheaper than 30 bucks. So 30 bucks I shall pay.
Good thing I was lucky enough to find in a Best Buy bargain bin for 15 :)

Cool. Let me know what you thought of the plot when you complete it.

I didn't even know V was out untill I saw it in a game store. The price slashed from £30 down to £20
DQIV actually got hype in a lot of Magazines here.
Finally, been waiting ages for this, it's my most wanted DS game.
According to this site, DQIV sold 150,000 while DQV only sold 70,000 in Europe. They compiled their data from vgchartz who have been proven to rather inaccurate though.
Yay!
Now all there needs to be is a released date for DQVI
I'm looking forward to six more.
VI spoilers
! I want to fight darkdream
i'm looking forward to numero X actually more than remakes
I'm still bummed that DQIX is offline and doesn't even attempt to offer online play. I mean, you'd figure Nintendo would try setting up a server if they went out of their way to publish the game, knowing there's demand for it and are likely aware of the complaints from the Japanese version.
If it were online, it'd be a helluva contender against Phantasy Star Zero in the online co-op RPG department. You really lose out on a whole experience if you don't have anyone to play locally with. It's worse for the western fans since DQ is nowhere near as big as in Japan. And tbh, I hate seeing the "Wi-Fi Connection" logo on the box and finding out it's only for local connectivity. What a jib. :(
Also, I too cannot wait for DQVI. Considering I never got to play IV through VI prior to the DS remakes, it's a great chance for me to experience them now. Now if only they can do something about DQVII…

You mean like stopping people from falling asleep from boredom halfway through?
I own DQ7. I played it for like, 2 hours before I even saw the first slime.
What the hell.
And then I got killed by something or another (a very basic enemy) not long after, and gave up on the game.
You didn't miss much. I can't believe they put so much time into making such a boring, flaccid game.
DQ VII's not bad. I like it, but it is VERY tedious. The warps are freaking confusing too. Wasn't it like the best selling PS game or something, though?
Never played VI or IX, so I'm quite excited to do so, even if I think DQ III will never be topped.
the only DQ games i played were Cobis adventure for GBC and DQVIII for PS2
so im looking forward to 9, as well as playing 4 and 5( if copies werent so expensive to buy online)
I hope they're still gonna release DQ6 in english for the DS, but I was hoping it would be released first between the gaps of DQ5 and DQ9.
Oh boy, I can't wait for DQ9, i need a new DQ game that isn't the Joker series.

They are bring out VI, it was released in Japan not too long ago so we'll probably get it Q4 2010 /Q1 2011.
One also has to wonder if it'll be SE or Nintendo publishing the game here when that time comes. I think SE might have given up on the franchise here.
I believe it's Nintendo who are doing DQ9 so I'd imagine its them for 6 too.
I think SE will still publish DQVI. Nintendo are publishing DQIX because they are trying to push the series in the US/Europe (read: get more profit from it :p). Nintendo will probably publish DQX as well.
I think SE's focus on Final Fantasy XIII may have something to do with the lack of publishing DQ on the west.
Just beat the game, oh, five minutes ago. Very rewarding experience. Thank you Darkstorm for constantly harping on about how good it is.
The story was awesome, (I can only imagine how amazing it'd be as an actual manga format with the hero talking and heavy character interactions and whatnot) and even though I had an inkling of some of the plot twists in advance, was pretty continually surprised. I especially enjoyed the multi-generational aspect of it. I really enjoyed the monster recruitment aspect, random though it was. The dungeons and quests moved at a nice brisk pace (the second you finished one adventure it was on to the next) and I really enjoyed it. I'll probably pick up 9 when it comes out.
Even though I usually have terrible luck at these sorts of things, I actually recruited a metal slime fairly early on. (But not before getting married and making multiple saves… curses...) After he got up a few levels so that he had SOME HP he was pretty damn unkillable. Full defense, agility, AND immunity to all spells? I can only imagine the sheer monstrosity of actually having a liquid metal slime. Gave him the sage stone much later and pretty much nothing could do anything to me. I can hardly imagine playing the game without one now... but I'm also not about to hunt one down on another playthrough. It would have to be sheer luck again.
Final party had a golem, gigantes, great dragon, Saber, Hero (Goku) Son (Gohan) Wife (Nera, because she was a dog person) and the metal slime. Several other monsters along the way I liked but got kicked out near the end like slime knight.
played it and got stuck on the queen boss ….. too bad it was a rental.
I got mad she kept casting spells on my characters.
(especially my 2 monsters)
Has anyone from Japan played IX? I also played and beat both this AND IV due to Darkstorm (and Togashi), and now I'm addicted to Dragon Quest. Hope IX is good because the only console I have is a DS.
I've beaten all the DQ games except for VII and IX. I'm looking forward to IX so much that it's almost a problem.
In V, I recruited a bunch of good monsters, but didn't have the patience to really level up Starkers and Rebjorn. They're both in the early 20s right now in levels. I checked a few stat sheets, and apparently Starkers gets 255 in every stat once he reaches level 65 or 70, and Rebjorn hits those same numbers around level 80-90 in everything except for Speed. Jeez, what a grindfest. They're powerful as ****, but not worth it.
But yeah, I'm already planning my class and weapon distributions for my party in DQ IX. It's a problem.
Jeez, what a grindfest. They're powerful as ****, but not worth it.
Yeah… it seems a bit silly to grind things up to uber levels after you've already conquered everything handily
Pokemon suffers the same problem most of the time.
Tho I did wate a lot of time just trying to get monsters to join me... that I then never actually used. I was really dissapointed when the killer robot didn't get two attacks like he had in DQ8 and as an enemy.
Glad you guys enjoyed V.
Really hoping IX has a strong story - and that VI gets a release date soon(It's not quite as good as V or VIII, but has an interesting story from memory).
I'd love to see III get a remake up to new graphics. That would be amazing. Mostly because my only way to play it anymore is on my GameCube's GameBoy Player, and I'd like to see it all shiny.
IX's release is pretty close, though!
God, it's been almost a decade since I played 3 on the gbc. Would be nice to see, although it'd be the third time it was ported now.
You guys get DQIX two weeks earlier then us, might have to import.
I'd like a remake of III since You-Rope never got the game in any form.
I'd also like a remake of VII since II and VII are the only games I haven't played (and VI but that should be out soon enough).
Quite a few shops freely sold us gbc games back in the day.
VII is awful, so I wouldn't be getting excited even if they did.
Basically from best to worst:
V
VIII
VI
IV
III
II
I
VII
Something like that. Although I & II may have aged somewhat, I haven't played them in 10 years.
I never played VII, but isn't that game notorious for having the player go through like, an hour of exposition before they even fight the first monster?
I think it was even longer then that, but I never replayed the game so it's been a long while.
It would be forgivable if the story was interesting, but it's not.

When I played it, it was about 2 hours before seeing the first slime.
I was then killed shortly after.
I never played it again. It unfortunatley gave me a negative opinion of all Dragon Quest games.
Luckily 8 came along and looked amazing, so I gave that a shot. Now I'm sorta looking forward to 9, though I wonder if the job class system is anywhere near what FF has done with its job oriented games.
The fact that a lot of people seem to be getting DQ9 makes me excited for the online.
I think that's a first in ever I've been excited for online.
Of course we just KNOW we'll see someone with their char named 'Fagballs'

So that'll be you, then?
I've been staying away from previews of IX, so I'll be interested to see how they implement multiplayer. I don't really see it working as the battle system has stood for the last 25 years, as that'd be pretty boring. I assume they've made changes.
@robbybedfart:

Of course not.
It's not Robin OR Chopper related in any way. Come on robby.

It's been, oh, 6 or 7 years since I last played through it on the GBC version. My NES version's battery died, so I won't be playing on that, either.
Yeah, if it did get a new remake, it would be the third port, but it still wouldn't be that bad considering that the releases went like this for USA:
III (NES)- Veerrrrrry limited supply of the game.
III (SNES)- 99% certain it was never released outside of Japan.
III (GBC)- A slight downgrade of the SNES version, but with a few extras, like the personality test. At least, I think the personality test was new to GBC.
And the last version came out over a decade ago.
If I were to rank them by my experiences, it would go:
III
VIII
V
IV
II
I
VII
…and never played VI, so I'm looking forward to it's DS remake, and very happy to have IX almost here!
I hate rating I so low, because it is still very good considering it's age and being basically the alpha-JRPG, but that is pretty much how I'd rank them.
