Yeah, I hated that in Chicken Little, also. I understand the kid isn't exactly the grade A material that he wants…
Grade A?
…or Grade AA?
! Yohohoho, egg joke!

Okay, after having seen the Tangled trailer on the big screen (before Toy Story 3), I can truly say:
It looks better on the big screen.
It's still not the "OMG it's a moving oil painting!" feeling that we'd hoped for, but it definitely looks more artistic. I get more of a sense of "melding of traditional and CG art."
A dinky little youtube box doesn't do it justice. Here's hoping it looks even better in its entirety.
I saw the trailer with Toy Story 3, but I am still not interested in seeing it (Tangled).
When did this happen!?

Did stupid SyFy's license end so now they can show it over here?
I enjoyed the voices from the English version. Williem Dafoe did the movie for me. But yea, finally a US Release. The movie has been out for quite a while, just the US release is finally coming.
Hmm, looks like it could have some fun action it. But just from hearing "there was a time when humans and dragons were one" I get the feeling this will have a strong message about humans destroying nature. Specifically animals.
Also, IDK if this is common knowledge but supposedly Steve Jobs and president of disney were meeting at Disney last week. I was in Disney World, became friends with a guy who worked their and he said the two were meeting and staying at a hotel on the boardwalk. IDK what this means, but some deal must have been happening. Sorry for the lack of source/ possibly posting common knowledge.
The movie itself was a total shot. Not the best Studio Ghibli film I've seen.
vat?! a new miyazaki film and i didn't hear about it till now!!!

It's been out for a few years, but it hasn't been released here in the States due to copyright issues. Also, Hayao Miyazaki didn't direct it, his son Goro did. Also, I heard it wasn't very good.

ohh…. my bad.
The new one comes out in Theaters in Japan next week.

Though, I'm kinda more interested to see how they'll do their take on the Bamboo Cutter tale.
Not that I'm sticking up for Goro, but the mouths of the people who condemned his film were the same ones that parrot Hayao's views on animation and Japanese culture. So, it's hard to distinguish based on talk alone where legitimate criticism ends and prenatal bashing begins.

LeGuin liked it as a film, but didn't think it was that good of an adaption of the book. That still puts it several levels above the SciFi miniseries, which she hated.

Yeah, pretty much.
Earthsea has the visual awesomeness of Studio Ghibli behind it.
Not so much the writing. I was intrigued the first 10 or 15 minutes cause I kept expecting it to grow and explain more, and I wanted to fall in love with it, but… it didn't. It was pretty meh. Had a swordfight early on and I thout that was gonna be indicitive, but... no.
Same team of usual people on skies, tees, etc. tho. So it looks cool, at any rate.
It did however, get me to go out and buy the books.

It… wasn't an adaptation of the book. It was a midqual taking plae between the first and second... on her reccomendation, so that they would have leeway to do whatever.
It borrowed some plot elements from the different stories, but it wasn't an adaptation.

Let me quote a bit of her review of the film:
Mr Goro Miyazaki asked me just as I was leaving, “Did you like the movie?” It was not an easy question to answer, under the circumstances. I said: “Yes. It is not my book. It is your movie. It is a good movie.”
Book here refers to the entire series and not just A Wizard of Earthsea.
I swear there's never going to be a good adaptation of Tales of Earthsea. Maybe because people don't have the cajones to make the characters dark-skinned like they're supposed to be.
Karigurashi no Arietty looks pretty good though. I'm already digging the song.
And as much as we love Miyazaki, Ghibli DOES need to start fostering more talent, so it's good that more directors are getting projects.
So the Hollywood Reporter has something interesting in it.
Disney developing gargoyles project
With “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” opening Wednesday, Disney is staying on the magic path with an untitled gargoyles project.
The studio is in the process of hiring Zoe Green to develop a story revolving around the stone creatures for a feature project being produced by Lauren Shuler Donner and Jack Leslie via the Donners’ Co.The project seeks to build a mythology around the carvings, originally designed in medieval times to act as spouts but later took on roles as powerful symbols to ward off or attract evil. The story is being developed, but it is known to be set in modern times.
Repped by UTA and Energy Entertainment, Green has carved a little space for herself in the fantasy field. She wrote “Tigress,” which Stan Lee’s POWcq Entertainment is producing for Disney, and sold a fantasy project titled “Book of Shadows” for Castle Rock as a directing vehicle for Rob Reiner. She also was hired to adapt the Neal Stephenson novel “The Diamond Age” for George Clooney’s Smoke House and Syfy.
Oh boy.
Live action Gargoyles, not sure if want.
On the one hand, it's got that typical "magical X set in NY" theme common to so many recent stinker nostalgia movies all set up for it in the original series.
On the other hand…I can't help but imagine LA Keith David as Goliath. If he bulks up for the role, it could be a new brand of awesome.
The animated Gargoyles fandom is up in arms about this.
I wasn't sure what to make of this at first.
From how it reads to me, it's not a take on the amazing 1994 animated series "Gargoyles" without Greg Weisman, it's a take on, well, gargoyles. As in, not a reboot of the franchise, but a new entity. And while on the one hand I'd love to see a well-done movie on Weisman's Gargoyles specifically, for fans to be demanding Disney not do ANY movie involving characters that are gargoyles, or develop another reality/mythology based on the basic concept/species, seems a little… I'm sorry, the phrasing that keeps coming to mind is "ridiculously possessive." It's like saying that the only giant mecha should be EVA-world giant mecha, or the only two people running around fighting supernatural evil and the forces of hell should be Sam and Dean Winchester, or the only vampires should be of Bram Stoker's style of invention.
I'd like to see more Gargoyles, but I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to seeing more gargoyles...provided, as always, that it's done well. (As in, not the ones from Hunchback, mkay?) I would, however, object to a reboot of the Gargoyles world, since it was done so well in the first place.
All that said. They already have a viable, developed intelligent property. Why not try running with that? Its been 16 years, thats a generation. Its time to try again, methinks.
At the same time. Its been 16 years. More hasn't been in the cards for a long time. The fandom can be stupid.
Wait…
There's a fandom for Gargoyles?
REALLY? REALLY?
Is that show still on?

No, but there's a fandom for a lot of things that aren't exactly around.
And yes, Gargoyles has quite the fanbase. Myself and three sisters included.
Wow
I loved Gargoyles, I didn't even know of that
Then again, I don't remember half of what was going on, I just remember the awesome intro
Only in reruns. And 2/3 of a dvd release.
But it was a dedicated fandom all the same. Had conventions every year for the last 12 years.
Wait…

Before anyone makes snide comments, I didn't know one existed either until I came to AP. And this after spending 5 years on boards three times the size of SomethingAwful.

I'm surprised at just how sheltered you are sometimes.
As long as it's not a stupid LA-reboot of the original Gargoyles, I won't care. Gargoyles is one of those series that I don't think ever needs to be made into live action.

Based on their track record, Disney really, really, really hates Greg Weisman and thrives on the suffering of his collective fanbase.
How else do you explain running the last episode of Spectacular Spider-Man without its soundtrack?
Another little update on The Borrower Arrietty (which Disney had BETTER bring over here, I don't think there's any licensing problems), here's a new trailer with more detail:
2pDhIeqRR00
The Sorcerer's Apprentice had a disappointing opening, apparently.
Disney's family adventure "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" was a dud, opening at No. 3 with $17.4 million, lifting its total to $24.5 million since premiering Wednesday.
"It's disappointing to say the least," said Chuck Viane, head of distribution for Disney, which had high hopes for the movie. "I'm perplexed. I have no response, because I honestly don't know what went wrong."
Prince of Persia had a lackluster run as well.
I haven't seen either, but I know that I wasn't very interested from the start despite it being advertised pretty well as far as I could see. Bad early critic reviews, bad timing or just bad concept?
I don't really get it myself, it was a pretty fun movie. Nic Cage and Molina were great in it, too.
My only real complaint about it was that the first ten or so minutes were rushed as FUCK.
It's funny. Reading the first post of this thread, which was made by Taboo in 2005, she mentions upcoming movies. Majority of them are sequels, but amongst them is Toy Story 3.
Immediately, people mention "WHY TOUCH TOY STORY 3! The other two were perfect!" and even better, "But Disney doesn't have Pixar anymore."
Nothing important. It's just funny to look at the past, before even I was here or a fan of One Piece.
Did people seriously think Sorcerer's Apprentice was going to do well?
Nicholas Cage
"I had no idea what was going to go wrong. After all, we starred Nicholas Cage in the leading role with long, greasy hair. This is usually what brings in all the families."
Nicolas Cage with long greasy hair was actually the one single thing that I found possible appealing about the movie.
Don't hate too much on Cage. Go watch Raising Arizona.
@The:

Kukukukuku.
You know that, and I know that.
Just because people liked LotR and Harry Potter doesn't mean they wanna see movies that are, or on the surface from the commercials appear to be, just like them.
Woulda have thought Narnia, Bridge to Terabithia, Golden Compass, etc. would have taught that lesson already. Little children who can't act entering a magical CGI laden world grows old fast.
But, when LotR made bajillions of dollars and all 6 Potter films are in the top 30 grossing films of all time… there will be imitators.
I kind of liked Golden Compass.
But that was mostly because I know Nicole Kidman is hot and the polar bear fight WAS FUCKING AWESOME!
Lesson Learned: In a fight, never taunt your foe with "Is that all!!!".
Yeah, you're right about that. LotR and Hairy Potter stand out because everyone already loves the story and characters, generally just throwing a fantasy concept out there doesn't do well with the general public. (and all the conservative christian people go "sorcerer, ack!")
I guess they thought that using a classic Disney story like the Sorcerers Apprentice was enough, but I think Sorcerer's Apprentice has always been regarded as more of a art piece, not beloved childrens' adventure story.
I actually haven't seen Terabithia, Compass or Narnia 2. Because, regardless of the source material or actual quality of the movies… they all look and feel (in the commercials anyway) as cheap knockoffs cashing in.
So does Last Airbender, for that matter. Granted, it cashed in on a property that it is totally tainting, but...
Worth noting that the first Narnia did pretty decently, and it was actually a known name. But, probably because it was pretty lackluster, the second didn't fare as well.
Also, Eragon was terrible in every possible way.
BBC did a good lion/witch/wardrobe tv series way back when. Didn't think the disney one was that great.

Hey, no problem. I didn't see Bridge to Terabithia. Narnia, I completely agree with you. I hated the kids in Narnia. The queen, the main villian, was fucking awesome, but you can easily guess how things would end for her. At least her end is the coolest scene in the movie.
But Golden Compass had a strange place in my heart, namely cause it was a tad bit weird.
And yes, the polar bear fight was EPIC!

EDIT: Eragon and Airbend are indeed horrible.
I remember I actually saw Eragon in theatres with some friends. After about 20 minutes we realized it was ripping Star Wars scene for scene, note for note, with a sprinkling of LotR, and started accurately calling all the plot points and mocking it in advance. And at the end of the movie, we started adding the line "In the sequal" to the end of every line of dialouge, because there's a really lengthy sequence where the entire cast is splitting up and promising to reunite. "I have to go on a journey now… in the sequal!" "The dark wizard's power will come... in the seuqal!" "We will meet again... in the sequal!"
Me and my friends aren't usually the type to snark during movies. But. It was REALLY bad.
We later found out the book was written by a 15 year old. Which explained everything.
Golden Compass is a great book, haven't seen the movie, but the book is amazing, better than Harry Potter, IMO

Eh, I didn't see Golden Compass, but I loved the book. Watching the commercials I didn't get the feeling that they had adapted it very well (apart from the bear fight, apparently. Although it looks like they cut out the part where Iorek eats the other bear's heart).
One big thing they changed apparently is that in the movie the Magisterium is a totalitarian government, whereas in the book it's blatantly said to be the dominant church (that world's version of Christianity). The whole trilogy is basically about overthrowing a corrupt heaven. I don't see how the movies (if they bothered to make any more) could do that without either A. Altering it completely, or B. Pissing off every evangelist in the world.
