So, a bunch of short chapters then three long ass chapters. Nice planning.
Final Fantasy XIII
-
-
That's somewhat reminiscent of Dragon Quest 4. Chapter 5 (Hero's Story) is probably about the same length as or even longer than all 4 chapters that preceded it put together.
-
I can't even remember playing an RPG with consistent times in chapters.
-
I've only played 3 hours of chapter 11 but here's what's going on there.
You are FORCED to complete missions to progress through the game. Basically you have to run long distances to the next mission area to fight a new enemy so that you can complete the required amount of missions to proceed in the story. Since the Grand=Pulse area is so damn huge, this probably requires a lot of time.
What's funny is that when you first get to Grand=Pulse it is like leaving East Blue and skipping straight to the New World. I am literally scared of some of the enemies I have seen (they are at least 3x bigger than any of the bosses I have seen yet and they are normal enemies!). It's literally like fighting all small fry but a few Don Kriegs and Arlongs and then only see Sea Kings everywhere you walk (and they kill you before you can perform 1 attack!). This just means that I have to complete the missions and smaller enemies so that I can level my crystarium up until the story progresses and my crystarium level increases.
-
Sounds like fun.
-
Anybody whose ever played Valkyrie Profile 2 should know that chapters are not of consistent length =3
-
I put around 50 hours into Godhand… and that's not even an RPG
-
I physically can't put more than 50 hours into a game at a time, no matter how good the game is. It's sort of like a gaming form of ADD, if I play something for too long I just get bored of the gameplay mechanics and it really makes me want to play something else. It's why I can't get into MMORPG's and why it takes me a year to beat games like FF12, I just have no devotion.
So basically I respect all the people out there who have the dedication/obsession to spend hour after hour grinding away for a tiny increase in their statistics on stuff like WoW.
-
A quick question.
Does this game have optional bosses like ultima weapon, omega weapon, Gilgamesh etc? -

This is me in every way. There's a reason I have over 70 games and only a handful of them are beat.

A quick question.
Does this game have optional bosses like ultima weapon, omega weapon, Gilgamesh etc?i wanted to know this as well.
Ive read the area where RuNa is now, there are hard enemies with 200,000+ HP and also in the last area of the game there are seriously hard enemies.
Cant remember if someone said there bosses/enemies with over a million HP though but there is somthing like 'break damage limit' from FFX where you can deal up to 99,999 and one special attack does around 120,000 - 140,000.Shame this game has no limit breaks tho, that was one of the exciting things in previous FFs
EDIT: sorry, i got facts wrong. apparantly the enemies have millions of HP not hundreds of thousands and gilgamesh is in the game.
The last boss has apparantly 6 million HP.
No idea if any of this is true though, i just quick searched the gamefaq forums.
Also please god i hope this is a superboss… (from 3.50)

Yeah, most of the enemies that aren't in groups (that I can kill at the moment) have 700,000 hp. Of course, my characters have around 2000 hp and can only deal around 9000 (per hit) when they are powered up. A General battle with those kind of enemies takes around 4.5 minutes.
As for optional bosses, I don't think there is any. I think the only "special" enemies are the ones from the high-level missions.

I'm pretty much the same way. I can go a bit longer than 50 hours, but usually if a game is too long I'll just get bored with it and quit. As I've said before, I can go well over 100 hours in the Pokemon games, but eventually I just get bored trying to fill the pokedex and end up just dropping it. Same with FFXII, I got bored trying to finish all the sidequest stuff, but I still need to beat the actual game ^_^;
-
Wow… I'm not like you guys at all XD. I buy one game at a time, UNLESS I buy multiple tri-Ace titles. I don't really have the motivation to buy a hunk of new titles, unless I borrow and those don't last very long at all. I kinda buy games I know I'll finish in 4 weeks (usually it's 2 weeks).
Plus it saves me money. I guess I'm not a gamer with the library as huge as.... a library.
-
Wait, wait wait–NO optional bosses?! The fuck?!
At least Gilgamesh might be in the game…
-

i think the 'optional bosses' your thinking of are in the monster hunt missions. ive read a few times that ultima, omega and gilgamesh are in the game but i have a small feeling people are chattin shit to get people excited.
-
….Beat it…
I'll go more in depth later, but my clear time was around 47.5 hours and I did quite a few side quests.
Ending was somewhat interesting. Last bosses were pretty easy, but having 6.7 million HP with pretty much only one hit kill moves every few seconds and the final form not taking damage from anything but break hits and having a timer to do it made the battles take time.
Game is fun overall, I really like the battle system, but the linearity is not very good at all (chapter 5 being the worst).
There also doesn't seem to be much to do after the game (even though people like to say so) because you pretty much go everywhere within the normal span of the game.
Only after game things are:
-Leveling crystarium
-Missions (and get 5 stars on past ones)
-Chocobo Treasure Hunting (for items) and Riding...and that's pretty much it.
I do like the game's normal length, though, because I find 50 hours to be the optimal time for an RPG and anything past that is overkill (except with sidequests).
Gilgamesh is not in this game.
More later.
-
Hmmmm I'm not sure about this one to be honest. Heard almost nothing but bad things about it thus far. I think I'll check it out and if I cant get away with I'll just drop the whole FF line from now on (excluding Tactics games and the DS remakes)
-
Dropping the whole numbered series? Why? XIV will be an MMO you can play both on the PS3 and PC (they share the same server), and no telling what XV will be, but we'll likely get it this generation (tho towards the end of it) if it follows the X - XI - XII pattern. It could be better… or it could be an interactive emo J-Pop music video.

For half the "Hardcore" crowd it'll always be worse.
-
Yeah well, they need to know games aren't like they were in the '90s anymore. This is nothing new and they need to stop expecting in the market we have today.
-
People need to stop expecting Good Games?
I'm sorry but I really just do not see the logic in this at all.
-
I never said that. Now, if you think ONLY retro games are good, that's your problem.
-
Well that is true. But I do personally think the FF series has hit a slow decline since FF7. Went up around X/X-2 time and then had a heart attack after.
Then look at the likes of Dragon Quest in comparison and you begin to wonder just wtf is happening.
-
X-2 was the heart attack. When I watched that opening cinematic, I wanted to drive my head into a wall continuously until I found a stud (ha ha, very funny, not that kind) that would help make me forget what I just saw via massive head trauma. Still do.
For me, X was the last good FF, and 7 was it's peak. I know it's "cool" to call 6 the best, and 7 is not to be praised because of the fanboy presence (despite that 6 has its own, much more pretentious fanboys), but screw that. 7 was great. 8 was okay, but nowhere near 7 (which was, admittedly, a tough act to follow). 9 was very good, as was 10. 10-2 was a piece of gutter-trash, 11 was a boring MMO, and 12 defined forgettable. I'm worrying for Final Fantasy, folks. I love the series, but damn do they need to get their act together…! 13 looks like it'll be mediocre, but I have high hopes for Versus 13.
Don't let me down, Squeenix!
-
X-2 gets respect from me, just because the game was simply fun to play to me. I really enjoyed the battle system in that game.
And, as awful as the first large story portion of the game was, the Bevelle Underground and Vegnagun set up was very well done and enjoyable for me.
XI was online, so I didn't bother. XII was definitely forgettable for me. I've forgotten a large portion of the story for certain and I still hate the battle system forcing you to just set gambits and let them do as they will, since I'll always prefer to have direct control of my characters like in, say, FF I - X. XIII seems so-so from what I've heard, but maybe it'll be better than I'm now expecting. Gotta wait and see. XIV is online like XI, but maybe (big maybe) I'll give it a shot.
-
It always REALLY bugged me how the main villain of X-2 not only defined the FF cliche of angst, but was literally defeated by the power of love. Eeeugh…
-
I was severely disappointed in X-2 not letting you play Blitzball.
It's all automated I believe. -

This.
The camp was unecessary but the game was fun and they made the job class (something I've hated ever since I first laid eyes on it) bearable. In fact…I feel like playing it again suddenly.
-
I have to admit, FFX-2 had some really cool challenges and game play mechanics, desipite being a bit sugar-dosed and filled with crappy pop.
I also liked the optional bosses. Those were pretty epic, especially that one in the dessert.
-

 So I pressume you don't like Final Fantasy V.
X-2 was fun. It had a fast pace, and each NORMAL battle flew by. And I was always excited for the next boss battle.
But the story and the mini-games fucking drove me crazy!
"Let's make these monkeys have sex!"
"Pass balloons to different people!"
"Try to get this guy laid!"
"Chase a chocobo!"
"Rapidly press buttons to fix lightning towers UNTIL YOUR FUCKING FINGERS BLEED!!!"God I hated that last one. That's one thing I liked about FFXII, it was mostly battle focused. Yeah, the minigames sucked, but they were few and far.
-
I disliked most everything that X-2 had to offer… but it's version of the Active Time Battle system was about the most fast paced and well tuned it has ever been. The battles were intense
Changing jobs on the fly was cool.... just unfortunate given it was dress changing...
That's what ticks me off the most about X-2... is imagining the system in place for a serious FF game...
-
eh the battle system in X-2 was pretty good it was everything else that annoyed me.
Especially the shitty completion system which mae it entirely impossible to get full completion without a walkthrough and even then it was stupidly hard and obnoxious. Forgetting to talk to one random person at one specific point should not cost you 100%.
Also anyone who thinks only "retro" Final Fantasy's were good can go suck a cock.
-
X is currently my all time favorite, much better than 6 or 7 in my opinion.
X-2…I liked watching my best friend playing it, she made it look kinda fun.
I didn't get to play 12 much at all. :( I like what I played though.
And I have extremely high hopes that 13 will become my new favorite.

**X-2 had a fun engaging battle system that was definitely ahead of its time.
I personally think Square Soft messed up by not following Blitzball up with a deeper sequel. I spent hours on that side game until I was unstoppable.
Anyways back on topic I will not be purchasing FXIII…directly. I will buy a used copy since I have a disgust for how Square-Enix has treated PS-3 owners this gen.**
-
how exactly has Square-Enix been treating ps3 owners?
Both XIII and XIII-Versus are on the ps3.
unless you're talking about the couple games they developed exclusively for the 360… but infinite undescovery and the last remnant were very mediocre as far as i've been told
-
They've also released an awesome looking KH game for the PSP. Look at their piss-poor DS effort.
Although to be fair, they've been giving Nintendo Dragon Quest games quite a bit. New Tactics game too and remakes of early Final Fantasies.
Trying not to mention the Crystal Chronicles and etc

I'd defend the DS KH game….but I'm not a fan right now.
It feels like......bad fanfiction.

**SE has treated PS3 owners like the red headed step child. FFXIII is their first release on PS3 this gen…It's like they completely abandoned one format and told us to wait until FFXIII since it will be so good and is exclusive, but then turned around and went multiplatform, which I dont have a problem with except it took more time in development.
More time in development means I the N/A PS3 owner is getting the game even later than normal because of the 360 crowd, whom has had SE titles developed this gen for exclusively for them. So I ask SE after being a loyal customer to them where's the love? and they don't have a good answer.
Versus isn't an answer since I have no clue when that is coming out and was further pushed back in development because they had two teams working on FFXIII. One for the PS3 and the other for the 360 so again the PS3 owner is told to wait because of the 360 crowd. I could care less about the loss of exclusivity but same day launches....screw that give me the game first as I haven't had a chance to play any of your games this gen and tell 360 owners to wait the additional time.**
-
hmmm… yah know, I do understand your point about having to wait due to extra development time for a system that most of Japan doesn't even care about. But FFXIII is coming out a LOT sooner than i'd have anticipated, why are you complaining?
I mean.. March? And it was JUST released in Japan this December? Sounds good to me! If this had been a few years ago, we'd have had to wait until around the fall for it to finally hit shores. You can thank the extra speed due to the release's popularity (which has been heightened in the states thanks to it's port to 360).
I honestly don't mind waiting for Square games anymore.. mostly since I just don't care as much as I used too. It's not like the PS3 doesn't have a great selection of games to play.
I'll admit that it has been lacking in the RPG department. But like I said... I'm certainly NOT missing the 360 "exclusives" one bit.
one a different note, I just found this and thought it was hilarious:
hiding it for those who aren't trying to see clips of the beginning of the game (nothing big but can't be too careful):

Yeah I understand where your coming from. The time isn't that much but its greater because of the added 360 time. I just generally feel spurned by SE this gen and coming as a gamer who bought a ps just for FF7 and has supported them since.
They have disregarded me and hell if I'm going to support them.
-
I'm fine with it, I don't really have RPG time anymore… Hopefully soon tho.
-

Well im not sure if you knew but Square have been doing that since FF started. It all started on Nintendo and then went on to Sony (As i remember, nintendo fans were not happy just like some of you) and now its gone multiplatform.
Personally i dont care, i was expecting the game to come out at least 8 months after japan release (similar to others) so the fact that its coming only 3 months after is a miracle in its own right. And also, even if it remained a ps3 exclusive, i very much doubt it would be released any earlier, they had to do the english VAs which they started much later in development.
The only negative thing i can think of with the multipatform move is that it most likely delayed the development of versus XIII (which im hoping is not an action-based rpg ie kingdom hearts) -
Review of the Japanese version

Response to review:
This game deserves a 10! Not only does FFXIII have stunning graphics, it also has a compelling story. I say this because I imported the game & am a fluent Japanese speaker.

This installment does seem promising & I'll definitely get it, but sumthin tells me that I'll suck at it since the battle system looks too complicated for me. :(
-
Wait, that review was from Play magazine? But they give like, EVERYTHING 9's and 10's.
A 7.9 from them is a pretty bad score. (its incredibly rare they go below a 7 on anything. They even stopped using scores in the magazine entirely like a year ago because they always put the pros ahead of the cons, so early every review was mostly positive and their scores were meaningless and they knew it.)

Worthless company.

I don't see why they think they have to abandon the franchise altogether. The core of FF doesn't necessarily lie in the gameplay, but in the little details.
Basically, as long as you include Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Chocobos, Moogles, Cactaur, Dramatic Storylines, and Very Pretty Characters, it'll be Final Fantasy.
But again, part of what makes FF so big lies in part of its familiarity. It's like putting on a favorite pair of shoes, it's comfy and you love wearing them. So while I applaud moving forward, I admit it would feel weird to play a FF game and NOT be able to cast Blizzara.
