Smoking in One Piece

Sanji is a different character to Luffy altogether, what are you even talking about silly? Unless somebody can actually link me to the page of the manga that tells us why Sanji started smoking, i'm sticking with, "Looking cool for the ladies", and "it fits his image of a slick guy". Why would he start smoking to show Zeff he's tough, he wouldn't want to impress Zeff, they have a love/hate relationship.
erm .. seems like someone doesn't quite understand sanjis character and relationship with zeff. he started smoking coz he didn't want zeff to treat him like a kid. gosh he still complains when zeff calls him "kid" or "little eggplant", if he didn't care for zeffs acceptance he wouldn't give a fuck about that. he wanted to be accepted by zeff, he wanted to be tough and strong coz he thought that's all that mattered for a pirate like zeff. that guy threw his whole life away for a kid he didn't even know .. and sanji still feels guilty for that. that's why he stayed at the baratie and didn't want to leave, not coz everyone was so 'nice' to him, but coz he felt like "my life for his". he just wanted some respect from zeff for all the work he's doing and for his decicion to not live his life .. that's just how children are. ever wanted to impress your father or mother? they don't hate each other, it's just that both are to much of an ass to show their love. -__-
Done.
you beat me to it!
To be honest, eating like Luffy eats is far worse for your health than smoking. Eating that much meat would guarantee you a heart attack by a young age. Smoking like Sanji does would raise your already existing chance of getting lung or mouth cancer by a small fraction.
In terms of it being a bad influence on kids, well how about the fact that the Straw Hats solve pretty much every problem by beating the shit out of everyone? We take it for granted that Zoro has attacked countless people with katana but some people are like "Oh but what if the kids decide to smoke 'cause of Sanji?"
yeah, i totally agree. furthermore … why don't people complain about how kids are beaten up to make them strong? (garp, zeff etc.) O___o that's like .. if a kid gets physically abused by his father, shouldn't we worry about the child believing this is a good thing coz in one piece ... it means though love?
in my opinion ... one piece isn't as innocent as some think and overall not really suited for little kids. helloho .. nami nearly got raped by absalom in the shower ^^'' i don't think smoking is the biggest problem ^^

I stand corrected.
It's not that i dont understand the relationship, but i imagined that Sanji only stayed at the restaraunt because he felt he owed a debt to Zeff. The way they treat each other is not what i think when i think father/son. I know that Sanji is grateful to Zeff and had been the only male rolemodel in his life.
But anyway, apologies for the mistake.

You're right, it isn't. And frankly, when I have kids, this is one of the things I'm not letting them near until they're old enough. I totally agree that this is NOT a children's series, despite however many children watch it in Japan. Maybe they're more mature over there? :wassat:
But something I've noticed as of late is that here in America the media has started paying a lot more attention to smoking and making people aware of how dangerous it is. You used to never see "tobacco use" or "smoking" on the MPAA movie ratings and now you do. For those of us who know not to smoke, it's like, "okay, so?" or at least, that's how I view it. But yeah, maybe that's why people are taking notice of the smoking in the series when there are worse things to worry about. Just a thought.

seriously, if people want to talk about smoking in One Piece, then bring back the "Who would smoke weed in One Piece?" thread from the HoS.
I agree with this man right here. That thread belongs in the non-existant Hall of Fame.

You're right. It's a FAMILY series. If it was a children's series, I doubt most of us would be here.

I meant that I think it's more of a series geared towards teenagers and up… or at least, with the rating it's been given here in America I'm inclined to think that.

That's why it's published in Shonen Jump.

this reminds me of the debate i had in one of my college classes discussing how disney is corrupting and brain washing the youth into a horrible moral stigmas of the 1950s.
….
goes back to lurking.

Japanese ethics for what they put in their media content is VASTLY different from the standards in the US. At times it hardly compares. Why are people always forgetting this. And the simple fact THIS IS A STORY ABOUT PIRATES. Booze and smokes are their luxuries. Why do people not remember this fact?

if some one starts smoking because a fictional character soes they deserve lung cancer
