Now, back to the issue of all the "huge" mistakes Viz makes....
Zoro is the biggest one...and it's not Viz's fault. They HAD to change the name because of 4kids and I think Shueshia.
Going Merry - Merry Go; It's wrong, but c'mon is it really THAT bad? It's ALMOST the same.
Tweet Tweet / Diggy Diggy - They only appear ONCE. This is a ridiculously minor complaint.
Roguetown - Yeah, we get it....they changed the name of Loguetown. Other than a neat literary reference that half the people out there won't get, does it really detract anything at all from the story? Does it cause a plot hole? Yeah, I didn't think so =/
Kami - They do this with some T rated manga, likely to avoid issues with parents who have something against God. I'm kind of annoyed that they consider the word God offensive....if we can't talk about God in literature in this country anymore, I think we've got bigger things to worry about than editing of manga. But honestly, as it's the Japanese word for a god, it's actually not a bad way to leave it exactly as it's intended, with Eneru believing himself to be a diety without using a lame term like "Sky Lord" or just calling himself a king. I think it's clear the higher ups in Viz have some lame thing against using the word god, (even though Eneru is only a delusional villain, not in any way, the God in One Piece) so I find it a tollerable way to get around any issues without unecessary editing.
Sanji's Attacks - a few minor changes - big deal. I still think they sound cool =/
Law's Finger - don't jump to conclusions; Don't complain about edits that haven't even happened yet...for all you know, it may be left; They left a middle finger in Black Cat and have been allowing cursing in YuYu Hakusho recently.
Now, really all of those complaints amount to very little. I've got 4 real complaints with Viz, and none of them prevent me from buying the volumes - in fact, they hardly diminish how much I can enjoy them.
Zoro - Zolo
Logue Town - Rogue Town
Okama - "Oh Come My Way"
"Blast" and "Darn"
And honestly....what use is it buying the Japanese volumes other than collection purposes / the huge gap (which will be closed w/ the speed-up)?
If you can't read them, then you're really just immagining what the text means right? So you find it easier to immagine what text, in a language you don't know says than to replace an l with an r as you're reading? =/
Honestly, if you care about truly re-reading and fully enjoying One Piece, I don't see how you can do that with volumes in a language you can't read. Sure enough, Oda's artwork is great, and it would be cool to look at the manga in it's original language...the Japanse volumes....from time to time. Maybe some people teach themselves a little casual Japanese...but to fully read / experience One Piece, it's just impossible unless you're fluent in the language you're reading it in. You can only get the jist of the story from the pictures and from your memory with the Japanese volumes.
With Viz, you get a few edits, but also 95% of the exact same dialogue in a language you can read fluently and get the entire story as you're reading.
Also, might I point out that if you cannot read Japanese and are "reading" the Japanese volumes, for all you know it could say Zolo, Tweet Tweet, Diggy Diggy, Merry Go, etc. (for the sake of argument)....you only immagine it to say Zoro because you know that's right. So basically, it makes you feel better knowing you have something that says Zoro....you can't actually read the word Zoro, but you know it's there. Somehow that's more enjoyable than a volume with readable text and about 5% error in translation?
