I disagree with Pascal only because I think you should believe what you do because you want to.
That kind of, "Well I have nothing to lose,", is kind of half-assed and more self-beneficial than anything.
That's not to say people don't believe in the deity of their choice because of benefits they think they might get in this life or the next if there is such a thing.
I don't believe in an afterlife.
I don't believe in the Resurrection.
I don't believe in actively pursuing (even they don't see it as such and TECHNICALLY it isn't) weak people to help then join a cause (atheist and believer alike)
I don't believe in miracles.
I do believe in odds resulting in 'luck'.
But I also believe that we aren't the greatest thing in the universe.
THE FUCKING UNIVERSE.
There's something out there. Dunno what it is. Maybe it is 'perfect'. The most incredible argument I've heard for the existence of something perfect (literally a perfect being) is that we all understand the concept of perfection but cannot experience it ourselves. That's pretty creepy. Whatever this thing is be it God or a tremendous beetle dreaming about us due to indigestion, I believe it's out there because I believe in something greater than myself. I don't feel ANY personal connection to it but I believe it's there.
I think far too many people lump believers and non-believers of all kinds together far too often.
"HOLY SHIT! Teacher used a Bible quote in class! FIRE HIS ASS!"
Suck a cock.
or how about:
"The love of Jesus can cure your homosexuality!"
Go fuck yourself dipshit.
Religions were established to maintain order, peace and preserve mortality at a time when life was REALLY FUCKING DIFFICULT.
No wonder homosexuals were persecuted. If you weren't playing target practice with an egg and sperm you weren't doing HUMANITY AS WE KNOW IT any good.
Those are archaic remnants of something we simply don't need as a part of religion today.
But when all people are lumped together as so very VERY often happens these days on both sides, you're really ignoring so many that are trying to say, "Hey look, my faith (or lack thereof) is flawed. No big surprise since I'm human. But that doesn't mean you have to be a cantakerous cunt-sore because of it."
