RE: Movies that don't deserve their own thread
I just rewatched Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World recently and it's still a damn good movie It's such a shame that we didn't get some sequels with a prime Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany. I'm almost tempted to read the books by Patrick O'Brian. I hear there is a prequel film in development but I just can't get excited about it with no Crowe, Bettany and director Peter Weir.
I love a good nautical film. I might just rewatch The Hunt for Red October and Crimson Tide next

RE: Why do people hate James Cameron's Avaturd?
That's because it was actually filmed with 3D in mind while other films retrofitted it on after the fact to make a quick buck.
Coraline which was actually filmed with two cameras did it well, and CG animated films in general do it really well since its nothing for them to render alt perspectives. How to Train Your Dragon and its flying sequences in particular was apparently really good.
Yeah, I never saw any of those films in the cinema either. It makes sense though. I did think the 3D worked really well in the first Doctor Strange movie. I saw the sequel recently, alas, in 2D. My friends get headaches watching stuff in 3D, so we had to pass up that opportunity.

RE: Why do people hate James Cameron's Avaturd?
Didn't see the first one in the cinemas when it came out. I only saw it on our small 32" TV screen back in '09. I've always heard people talk about how great the 3D was and how this movie is the only thing that did it so well during those few years when it seemed like every movie was coming out in 3D. I look forward to seeing the re-release of the first film in IMAX 3D as well as this new sequel.

RE: Aoashi
Episode five was wholesome as fuck and had me in tears.
Yeah I was not expecting to be hit in the feels with the family drama in a football anime
-
RE: What manga are you reading and how do you like it? What do you plan to read?
It being by the same guy as Believers makes me interested. I didn't think that was great by any means but I'm interested in seeing more by him possibly.
He certainly has a unique approach to storytelling that makes you curious to pick up some of his work. And the fact that they are not big in terms of chapter count means that you can go for a quick read and not invest too much time in something you may or may not like.
-
RE: Ousama Ranking (Ranking of Kings)
The voice acting has been on point as well. I can't believe Domas and Loid Forger from Spy x Family share the same VA.
-
RE: Jujutsu Kaisen
I like how the fights have been getting more and more creative, like the stand battles in JJBA or the nen battles in HxH, since we started introducing more sorcerers. The fights against cursed spirits seem to be lacking in this regard, IMO.

RE: What manga are you reading and how do you like it? What do you plan to read?
I finished Arigatou by Naoki Yamamoto recently. It was a strange blend of dark/serious subject matter and humorous execution.
Synopsis: A depressing story about how a Japanese family's life goes wrong: an immoral protagonist, her sister who was gang raped before, her alcoholic mother who later devoted her life to a cult, and her father who lost favor with his company… full of sexual content and highly violent.
Genres: Comedy, Slice of Life, Ecchi
I had previously read Believers by the same author years ago. I hear Believers is getting a live action film adaptation soon.

RE: Ousama Ranking (Ranking of Kings)
Huh, weird!
Well, the chapters are digital release, so I would guess the author is just tweaking some stuff as he goes. In that particular case changing the composition so the focus is on the characters and not the big fluffy tree. He might have gotten a background assistant now and maybe there's some hurdles to figure out?
Yeah I guess that makes sense
I updated the first post of the thread with a an update on the scan situation and spoilers. I hope Pepperoni doesn't mind.
No worries
Wouldn't that be why is there a vault in the first place ?
I thought this was sort of hinted at in episode 19
!
-
RE: Ousama Ranking (Ranking of Kings)
So I can see that there are two different scanlation groups working on it. Any idea why there is such a huge difference in the background art?

RE: Aoashi
The animation is really really bad
Most of it is just static shotsI didn't really notice this much. I thought the last episode had some decent animation.
https://www.sakugabooru.com/data/ea02147d67c4f1af58c3d7ebe0692599.mp4I understand that some sports anime can be difficult to animate properly, especially football. I can see why sports like boxing and baseball make for a more cinematic experience, whether it's in anime or live action film- it's easier to convey the narrative of a duel between two boxers or a batter and a pitcher than for a team game between 11 vs. 11. Team sports with a smaller number of participants, like basketball and volleyball, are better for it than football, which is why I appreciate what Ao Ashi is trying to do despite the obstacles it has to overcome.
-
RE: Spy X Family
Anime-only here! The adaptation has been great so far. Looking forward to reading it once the anime finishes airing. Looks like they've already announced a second cour for this October.
-
RE: Aoashi
Last season it was 'Ranking of Kings', this season 'Ao Ashi' is the most under-watched anime that I have begun shilling for The Reddit episode discussion threads are barely getting any attention from the r/anime community. This first 4 episode mini arc has been really good. If anyone is looking for a new anime to watch this season, these first 4 eps might be a nice snippet of what's to come. From what I've heard from manga readers, things are only going to get better as the series goes on.
-
RE: Ousama Ranking (Ranking of Kings)
Yeah it's weird having to read both part 1 and part 2 simultaneously and waiting for the scanlations to catch up in the middle, but it's a whole lot better than where we were a year ago when there were only around 15 chapters translated.
-
RE: Ousama Ranking (Ranking of Kings)
Ok, chapter 68.5 is why I still prefer reading the manga over watching the anime. A lovely short self contained one off would never make into the speedrunning anime.
This is very true. If you ever wondered what happened to the little girl, Poise, from Kage's flashback you should read Chapter 167.5 (Bonus Chapter).
-
RE: General football "soccer" thread
Is anyone else watching Aoashi? It's a more grounded sports anime along the lines of 'Haikyu!!' and 'Ace of Diamond'.
-
RE: Ousama Ranking (Ranking of Kings)
Awesome!
The site that was translating the first chunk is up to chapter 68.5 now.
https://ou-samaranking.com/I know there's a link for 69 but its not up yet, I think they're managing a chapter or two a week, but not consistently uploading them.
Nice  It feels very much like I'm going to be following the manga from here on out. I don't think I have the patience to stay away until (if?) Wit Studio does a second season.
-
RE: Ousama Ranking (Ranking of Kings)
Not even any manga scans to read the few chapters not covered. Truly a long wait.
The only scans I've found are up to chapter 62, which is about halfway. SO yeah, a ways to go. But considering they didn't even start until the show hit, they're moving pretty quick. I wonder if they might start prioritizing the part 2 content now that the show is done?
There's also the raw…. in Korean. There's really not a whole lot of dialogue and the visuals do the job pretty well in telling the story.
https://manatoki125.net/comic/7630310?stx=%EC%9E%84%EA%B8%88%EB%8B%98+%EB%9E%AD%ED%82%B9.
Would you mind giving me a mini-spoiler? I just want to know…
I'm curious about the continuation though. I liked the last episode.
Home Hero Scans is continuing the scanlation of the manga with Part 2, picking up right where the anime ended. They've only done a few chapters so far, but I expect the pace will start picking up again soon.

Aoashi
I couldn't find a thread for this series. The manga has been around since 2015, but as an anime-only, I have only been following it since the anime started airing over a week ago.
Synopsis:
Ashito Aoi is a young, aspiring football player from a backwater town in Japan. His hopes of getting into a high school with a good football club are dashed when he causes an incident during a critical match for his team, which results in their loss and elimination from the tournament. Nevertheless, he catches the eye of someone important who happened to be visiting from Tokyo. How will things turn out for Ashito?I love how it seems to be a more grounded sports anime along the lines of 'Haikyu!!' and 'Ace of Diamond'. And it makes sense that they all give off similar vibes in terms of animation, since Production I.G has been involved with all 3.

RE: Ousama Ranking (Ranking of Kings)
Just finished it…Season 2 is too far away...
-
RE: Ousama Ranking (Ranking of Kings)
First time checking in on this thread since the site went down. I'm happy to see that this series is picking up some more traction with anime/manga fans.
I have seen a few comments about an anime-original ending. What I've heard from readers of the manga is that part 1 of the manga ended last year and part 2 is ongoing. This season will most likely adapt the whole of part 1. I believe there are 155 chapters in part 1 and episode 21 adapted up to the first few pages of chapter 146. So it makes sense that the last two episodes will adapt the remaining chapters and whatever else may have been omitted previously- the anime likes to reorganise certain chapters to give the story a better narrative structure.

RE: Ousama Ranking (Ranking of Kings)
Episode 9 was heartwrenching, beautiful and visually stunning. I cried.
Oh man…there is just so much to unpack in terms of story and characters. The animation and voice acting was on another level in this episode.
-
RE: Ousama Ranking (Ranking of Kings)
I would also plea to the manga-only guys to give it a chance. It's suberb! The delivery is great, and I feel like they are slightly better paced in giving weight tothe needed scenes; sometimes doing a better job than the manga
I second this plea. Please do check out the anime adaptation. It's bloody brilliant.
-
RE: Ousama Ranking (Ranking of Kings)
Haven't read the manga, but I've been watching this since it started airing and it's arguably the best new show this season.
Wit Studio have some of the best talent in the industry working on this show which has me excited for future episodes. Episode 9 will be directed by Arifumi Imai (who also did the storyboard) which makes me think it will be a cracker of an episode.

RE: Ousama Ranking (Ranking of Kings)
Regarding the last episode:
! I wonder why Bosse needed so much strenght, perhaps it was for the sake of it, but I hope not. Really interested in learning what the deal with Miranjo is, since she and Bosse knew each other before he was a king.
! Also, the episode was fine, but for the first time it felt like they put too much stuff on it, still fun to watch though.Pd: My bad, I thought it was an anime thread.
! This episode, like episode 4, felt like it would've done better with a longer runtime. The amount of content covered felt like what you would find in a 30-40 minute episode. It definitely would've been helped with some breathing room but it didn't affect my viewing of it too badly.
! I find the conflict between Bosse and the Monsters/Underworld interesting. I don't think the monsters are as bad as portrayed initially. Especially since we've seen what appears a peaceful society down in the depths.
Also speaking of character designs, Despa reminded me a lot of yesteryear actor Errol Flynn
And Desha kind of reminds me of Douglas Fairbanks Jr.

RE: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part II: Do the Dio Walk!
How they will manage Bohemian Rhapsody then?
Replace Disney properties with ones from Warner Bros. since they are involved in the production of the anime
-
RE: Ousama Ranking (Ranking of Kings)
I believe it's in chapter 11 that
! it is confirmed that the King made a pact with the Devil to sacrify his family to gain power. I mean, the anime was walking that path with the ressurection spell but to have it spelled like that from such an early point of the show…it just makes sense to post-pone it. Kudos to the anime team.
Yeah I like that they didn't tip their hand too early and saved it. Should be in the next ep according to the previews.
-
RE: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part II: Do the Dio Walk!
The leaked ED is also very fitting for the tone of this part
-
RE: Cowboy Bebop
Having seen it, I think I enjoyed it for what it was- "very expensive fan fiction" (as John Cho said). And I am looking forward to a season 2. Maybe the show runners will take the criticism and make adjustments.

RE: Ousama Ranking (Ranking of Kings)
I really like this series characters designs, everyone looks so different from one another, my favorites designs so far are Bebin, Apeas and Desha´s. It´s also cool how the author makes them more complex than they appear to be at first glance, suspassing the people´s expectations.
Hoping that it gets a second season though, since it seems the manga just finished it´s first half according to some sites.
Yeah I think Bebin and Despa are my favourite designs so far. Bebin, especially, is giving me major 60's/70's vibes with his hairstyle and facial hair. Like a Frank Zappa or a Charles Bronson (the actor, not the prisoner).
I love that the characters are hard to figure out. Keeps you on your toes as to who is trustworthy or not.
Yeah, I could only find the first 23 chapters…and while skimming it, I saw some "spoilers" for the anime only watcher. So I'll probably stick to the anime from now on.
Yeah unfortunately I had a look at the volume covers and I may have been slightly spoiled (just a teeny bit)
-
RE: Ousama Ranking (Ranking of Kings)
I've watched it all in one swoop and it's awesome! I'm after the manga to catch up, but I fully plan to see the whole season. Amazing!
Unfortunately the manga translations are way behind what we've seen in the anime

RE: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part II: Do the Dio Walk!
I listened to it a few times and it's starting to grow on me
Can't wait for Wednesday!

RE: Ousama Ranking (Ranking of Kings)
A lot happened in terms of story in episode 7 but the biggest thing that grabbed my attention was the technical aspects of this episode. There were some interesting animation and directorial choices.
Take just this scene

RE: Ousama Ranking (Ranking of Kings)
just watch episode 5 since i don't have a premium for the last one. It was a very good episode. The reunion scene is very touching. Who doesn't want to cry with them.
Domas struggle is also quite hard. He seems very lost in what he should do.
Damias appear less than a bad guy desperate for the power in this episode which makes him more interestingYeah the reunion was great. At the time, I thought when Bojji fell off the tower and landed perfectly on the bag, that it was very convenient. Nice to see that Kage had his back from even back then.
Domas is a very complex character. He's not bad per se and you can see the anguish within him when he's confronted with doing morally questionable things and his loyalty to the crown.
Bebin has been the most surprising character for me in terms of how much I like him compared to how little we've seen of him (as of episode 6). I doubt he actually died in that duel against Apeas so I'm looking forward to seeing him pop up in the future.
-
RE: Ousama Ranking (Ranking of Kings)
When we see him fighting the gryphon it looks like he is in the presence of the two scythe guys that made the potion plus a woman that could be the person in the mirror.
Yes you can even see the mirror behind her in that scene! I wouldn't be surprised if the story later revealed that the mirror was someone/something that was acting in the best interest of the kingdom but was going about it in a shady way, a la Lelouch. There's a lot of hidden depth to these characters.
-
RE: Cowboy Bebop
Oof, early reviews are not kind.
Eh…early reviews for The Witcher season 1 were mixed as well and I still enjoyed it. I'll go into this with an open mind. If it isn't any good, we'll still have the anime anyway. The existence of Dragon Ball Evolution or the M Night Shyamalan Airbender movie don't diminish my enjoyment of the source material.
-
RE: Ousama Ranking (Ranking of Kings)
Yes, good that Daida didn't fall for it. It gives him some agency as a character instead of becoming the mirror's puppet.
Yeah I like how you can never tell what the characters intentions are. Even the spear guy, Apis, is giving off ominous vibes. The fact that he's already been in the "basement" before makes me question whether he's motivated by good intentions in his support for Bojji.
-
RE: Ousama Ranking (Ranking of Kings)
About episode 5, The scene where they made the potion was hilarious and disturbing at the same time. Like what the actual fuck
Oh yeah that scene was so elaborate and intriguing I was almost disappointed that we couldn't see the outcome. Good on Daida for not falling for it? But I guess he's just too prideful
-
RE: Ousama Ranking (Ranking of Kings)
Just got around to watching episode 5. Man… the world building in episode 4 and 5 has been something else. The characterisation has been great too. The anime depicts the characters in complex shades of grey in terms of morality, instead of black and white. The mirror seems like an exception for now (and possibly Daida). It seems very nefarious but who knows, maybe the mirror will get a fleshed out background sometime in the future.
I couldn't help but notice Takahiro Sakurai's name in the voice cast so I'm really looking forward to seeing him turn up
-
RE: Midnight Mass
Midnight Mass references in Gerald's Game and Hush.
Love the work that Mike Flanagan keeps churning out. Looking forward to his future projects
-
RE: Ousama Ranking (Ranking of Kings)
It looks like the manga translations and the anime episodes will be neck and neck in terms of release.
I didn't think there was that much of a difference between the way the anime and the manga introduced the Rankings was there?
-
RE: Ousama Ranking (Ranking of Kings)
Thanks for pointing out this series. Both the Anime and the Manga are great in their way. The condensed heart and tragedy within 20 chapters or the first three episodes is just One Piece Level epic.
No worries  The series is doing pretty well critically but I just hope more people tune into it. I know Wit Studio has had some financial difficulties of late.
I too have read the manga and I think Wit has done a stellar job of adapting it. I know that the manga presents everything in a pretty straightforward way when compared to the anime so I appreciate the choices that the studio has taken with regards to rearranging and/or reframing certain events to keep the viewers anticipating.

RE: Ousama Ranking (Ranking of Kings)
So…..did anyone watch the last episode?
This blog post about the first 3 episodes was an interesting read https://blog.sakugabooru.com/2021/10/31/ranking-of-kings-ousama-ranking-production-notes-01-03/
