I love how this forum is so old the thread from the original series in 2005 can keep going to the point of the sequel series coming out in 2022.

Well I checked back to see how people were reacting hoping it was a bit less shitty. It might be a little, thanks Robby.

RE: Berserk
IT looks like they're going to go full-CG with this one, which hopefully goes better than the verson switching back and forth between CG and hand drawn. CG can look really good as an anime when it's used properly. I hope they can get the cell shading to work with it. Also, I'm glad as hell they're finally doing more of the story. After like 3 years or whatever passed since the first movie series, I was sure they'd given up on their promise to animate the entire series. I wonder how long this anime will go. You think they're gonna do seasons, or an OVA? Or more movies? I don't think the series did well enough as movies to merit more, really.

RE: Toriko II: Ichiryuu's Slimy Insides!!
If the anime were coming back in 3 months we would've heard about it by now. But yeah, that's what's taking the Dragonball Kai slot once Kai ends.
But who knows. Maybe after THAT ends. -
RE: Toriko II: Ichiryuu's Slimy Insides!!
That's true about Guemon. I was wondering that. It never got brought up at all. Maybe he'll show up next chapter having fallen asleep right when he was gonna go help them.

RE: Toriko II: Ichiryuu's Slimy Insides!!
We've finally finished scanlating Ring!
http://hiwamatanoboru.com/2015/03/08/ring-volume-3-end/So now ya got no excuse. Go read it, it's a great manga.

RE: Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
Also, from what I've researched recently, Gwess, Versus, and Magent Magent are also correct. They're spelled differently from the Japanese names of the products (Versus is a weird case because his name is a line of Versace products, or something? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Versus_(Versace) ヴェルサス).
Ermes seems to be a literal pronunciation of the brand name Hermes (Which is French; the H is not pronounced). This may be a thing similar to Kars where he spelled the name differently officially even though it's pronounced the same.
Magent Magent ends in "to" not "ta" like the Soul'd Out song. マジェント・マジェント VS マジェンタ マジェンタ.
Gwess uses the super-unusually spelling グェス rather than the brand Guess written as ゲス. The small ェ (e) after the グ (gu) indicates it's pronounced like the name "Manguel" apparently (Like this guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alberto_Manguel ). It's a sound rarely used, but it is different.
Similarly, the name for Anasui is like that in Jojoveller, but "Annasui" is how the scanlations did it. They removed an N for the official version despite the names being spelled the same in Japanese. As for Bruno Buchiarati, I still have no idea. His name's pronounced "Bucharatii" in Japanese so I think I prefer that spelling rather than "Buccellati".
For tons more of this, the wikia explains some (but not all) of the reasoning behind the official romanizations.
http://jojo.wikia.com/wiki/Name_Variants -
RE: Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
His katakana name can't be romanized to Abdul. It has a kana that indicates a distinct "v" sound. It's "Avoduru" not "Abuduru". アヴドゥル
Many characters don't have actual real-world names. Like Straizo, the pillarmen, Rudol von Stroheim, Dio Brando, Vanilla Ice, Gray Fly, Mannish Boy, ZZ, Rubber Soul, Cameo, Oingo, Boingo… Like half the cast or more has either a first name or last name that's not a regular name/word.
This has also been written in many official things. It's pronounced distinctly different from the Arab name Abdul.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's name is spelled カリーム・アブドゥル=ジャバー. It's different. -
RE: Gintama Discussion
The problem with that is that tons of characters aren't much like their counterparts. Like vastly so. Especially with historical Takasugi VS Takasugi Shinsuke. But then there's all the characters in Gintama that are original and all that, even if Takasugi suddenly changed his entire philosophy.

That's actually really close to a lot of the lyrics that were in the OP/Eds. Though a bit cooler.

RE: Toriko II: Ichiryuu's Slimy Insides!!
I can't believe people are having this "It can't happen in real life" discussion AGAIN. For fuck's sake…
I've tried to understand these opinions again and again and they still seem like the weirdest logic to me. Like none of these arguments follow any sort of thing that people usually discuss when critiquing anything. We had crazy unrealistic pseudoscience in chapter 1, guys. Now we're at a part of the series pretty far down the line from that... For crying out loud...And they have re-used all those things somewhere or another in the series a bunch of times. They usually comment on some aspect of a new thing in the series being related to it as the characters powers get more complex. The thing is re-using tons of stuff from earlier on in the series would be boring. As would making a series based on crazy extremes be SOOOO technical that it totally satisfies everyone logically.
I dunno why I keep coming back to this thread only to see this same stuff over and over again...

RE: Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
I can't wait until they drive around Italy in their new golden Lamborgini that they won in by sabotaging a sabotaged beetle fight.

RE: Toriko II: Ichiryuu's Slimy Insides!!
Just for the record, I wasn't saying you can't negatively criticize it, it's just it seems so odd to me that people act like stuff that's been in the manga for the ENTIRE manga is a new thing. These GM arcs are actually a lot longer than many others. If you don't like the characters or you think a new direction the story is taking isn't interesting, or you wanted to see more of an event or a place or a character, that's a different thing from saying "I wish this manga were totally different from how it's been the entire time".
Toriko's also hardly a cooking manga, given that usually the cooking aspects are very short and they're never the focus. Moreso it's sort of chefs and their relationships/connections with ingredients. What defines "cooking" is figuring out how to get the special preparation ingredients. It's also not really high in terms of 1v1 humanoid fights. Like, seriously, there aren't all that many even if you count every one in the whole series. There's 1 in Gourmet Coliseum (VS Bei), 3 in the Regal Mammoth arc (VS Gido, Cedre and Star), 3 in Ice Hell (VS Tommy, Bogey, and Barry), 1 in Shokurin Temple (VS Chiyo), and a bunch in Cooking Fest.
You can count one more if you count the one in Gourmet Pyramid VS the Nitro, I don't think you'd count the Four Beast. There's a sorta battle against Livebearer that takes place primarily as a card game. -
RE: Toriko II: Ichiryuu's Slimy Insides!!
It never ceases to amaze me that people don't remember that the first volume or so have things like "alligator that looks like a dinosaur and marks its prey with leeches and threw a whole ecosystem out of whack" and "giant 4-armed apes strong enough to crush a tank are Capture Level 5" and "whale-fish that shrinks to a tiny size once a year when it comes to the surface in one specific dangerous cave full of monsters and become poisonous at the lightest touch" and "giant old man that can transform, restart people's hearts, and rebuild eardrums".
And then people in this thread say things like "No way the Cooking Fest has ratings that high!".
People complain about One Piece's plot being too slow, too tangential, then they come here and say Toriko is too fast and should be more slow, predictable, and like tons of other shounen series out there. I dunno, never makes sense to me. That's largely why I don't go on this thread all that much. I've said it for a while now but there seems to be lots of complaints akin to "It didn't play out the way I wanted/expected to do, therefore it's not good". Also there's a lot of judging of arcs based on stuff that hasn't happened yet, like it's going to go down in a totally-expected manner from here on out and there aren't gonna be any twists, you know, like literally every arc has had. Obviously a lot of people like the series and aren't jerks about it when they don't like something, but a lot of the complaining really irks me. Toriko always goes way out of its way to have logical reasoning for how events happen, but still within the realm of the fantastic and absurd. It's always grounded with logic, character motives and established goals within a setting where extreme things happen. If you want to read a super grounded-in-reality manga there's plenty of great slice of life manga out there to read.
Anyhow, I think it's clear that Kaka isn't being truthful and a lot of shit's gonna change because of that. Kaka has some other motive and her "I'm in his debt" thing is just a way to get Toriko and the others to trust her. Her wanting them to leave Komatsu with her is part of it. I highly doubt the rest of this arc is "fight the monkey, go super-saiyan so you can beat him and eat his balls".

RE: Toriko II: Ichiryuu's Slimy Insides!!
Toriko passed the 20 million mark a while ago, guys. They publish "total sales" every once in a while.
http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/トリコ
According to that the V30 band said total sales 20 million. So by the point V30 went on sale it had sold 20 million. The 3 volumes that've come since then plus total sales of the series is a bunch on top of that.
Toriko ranks among the best selling manga every year, though after the anime ended the sales haven't been as high. That list of best-selling manga article is waaaaaaaaaaaay incomplete, though. It's missing tons of notable series and a bunch of the numbers are approximations. Like a fuckton of manga are all tied at 20 million.
Then once in a while you see some other list that lists completely different numbers for tons of those and doesn't mention some high-ranking ones at all: http://www.mangazenkan.com/ranking/books-circulation.html because of how hard it is to get official numbers on a lot of that stuff. Then there's weird shit like they're only counting volumes, not kanzenbans or bunkobans or compilation-y things. Makes it kinda complicated so you end up just going with whatever the publishers say or what Oricon says. The thing is though, don't equate "how good a series is" to sales or popularity. There's plenty of shit that's popular and plenty of so-so series that're popular and plenty of great series that aren't popular at all. I still don't get how average series like Kuroko and Haikyuu get such high sales. Or why Ansatsu Kyoushitsu or Shingeki no Kyojin get such crazy sales. They both seemed like purely "okay" series to me. It depends on what the market wants and how they're advertised or presented to their audiences, I guess. Whereas Toriko always feels interesting, original, and surprising to me without ever feeling hackneyed or awkward or poorly developed like it's insulting the audience's intelligence. You're free to disagree, that's just my opinion on the matter.

RE: Yugioh Abridged
Did he say he's gonna do episodes on a regular basis again?
It's amazing to think about how long he's done this series. It's been what, over 8 years? The fact that he's still doing it pretty crazy, if you consider he doesn't even make ad revenue from it. And the fact that he's got to keep developing the series beyond just "The original show makes no sense." which is where the story started out at. Plus all the bonus-y stuff.According to the yugioh wiki, he's at episode 143 now out of 226 episodes. So, maybe he'll finish around… a long time from now.
-
RE: Billy Bat
The series has started up again and I'm still translating it after… however the fuck many years.
These guys are scanlating it now:
http://mangabandits.com/They released 126-127 yesterday and I just got the raws for the next 2 yesterday and translated them. So they should get done in not too long, hopefully.
-
RE: Toriko II: Ichiryuu's Slimy Insides!!
Kinda depends on what you'd call active. A few haven't done anything in a while, a few show up every once in a while, a couple people just joined a couple weeks and haven't done all that much yet. Then there's 2 people just doing JoJolion and high8sky who is only doing stuff like Doubutsu no Kuni and Ring.
It's like 8-ish, I guess? -
RE: Toriko II: Ichiryuu's Slimy Insides!!
I've got 3 long-term projects going now. 81diver, which I have 24 more volumes of to translate (It's light on text though so doing one volume doesn't take too long), 3-Gatsu no Lion (Which is far and away the hardest one to translate) that has 5 volumes to catch up on and Ring which has 2 more volumes to finish.
That's on top of Toriko and Gintama every week and JoJolion every month, plus Billy Bat when it's not on hiatus, a volume of Innocent every few months when the volumes come out, and Wolfsmund and Real once a year. While I'm working a full time job and doing all kinds of other things in my life. And keep in mind I'm also managing the projects in HWMN and helping to manage the other ones in some form (Even if it's just reminding people to work on something, it's also sometimes helping out with redrawing or that sorta thing). So I can't do that right now, though I'd like to work on it. Maybe after Ring and some of the other stuff I'm doing. I also want to get the rest of the novel The Book: Jojo's Bizarre Adventue 4th Another Day done, but I don't think I'm gonna do that until I finish Ring either. Then there's the fact that Takeshi is a like 230 chapter long gag-manga. I've read it and it's a great series that'd be a lot of fun to work on, but translating would take a long time. So would typsetting. So I can't make promises about it.
If you just wanna know what Takeshi's about, it's about that weird looking guy on the covers. He's Takeshi. He's in elementary school but he looks like he's in his 50's. He's a "being of leadership". He naturally has the sort of charisma to be a great leader. It's a parody of battle manga, a parody of school manga, a parody of slice of life manga, and a parody of about every other sorta thing at one point or another. Like Takeshi has an attack that's just like the Kamehameha, and the characters make jokes about how it's just like the kamehameha. It also has One Piece references from back when One Piece had only just started, which I always thought was kinda cool. So it's a little like Gintama but less serious, more loony-toons-ish a lot of the time.

RE: Toriko II: Ichiryuu's Slimy Insides!!
We finally got volume 1 of Shimabukuro's previous series (after Takeshi, before Toriko) Ring done.
Go check it out:

RE: Gintama Discussion
I'm sticking by my theory that there's no way this can be the final arc. Because there's still a bunch of hanging threads. Oboro and the Naraku haven't been delved into. Sasaki and how he supports Takasugi's plan hasn't been gone into. Katsura and Sakamoto aren't around, and the fact that Mutsu is a Yato would probably be important. And the Tendoushuu, who are seemingly the guys that control everything would have to come into play in some shape or form.
-
RE: Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
The reason they haven't announced Part 4 is because Part 3 isn't done yet. The series is doing plenty well enough in both promotion of manga sales and BD/DVD sales and ratings and all that to merit more seasons. They said "We cannot confirm" rumors of Part 3 for like a year on the Twitter account, too.
Also, read the whole series. But if you don't read it in order it's fine but you'll probably end up getting spoiled.

RE: Innocent (Sakamoto Shinichi)
I forgot to post this here when this got done like a week ago, but Innocent Volume 5's scanlation is done.
http://mangatopia.net/main/2014/10/en-innocent-v05/
It's really awesome. More great characters and artwork that stem from some level of historical basis.
Volume 6 is out in Japan now. We're gonna try to get it done sooner this time. Maybe we'll even do it before Volume 7.
Meanwhile I'm working on trying to get 81diver scanlated with another group. -
RE: Gintama Discussion
I think a more likely conclusion is that the Shogun succeeds in his plan of becoming "Just Shigeshige" and someone else becomes shogun. But who knows.
I dunno if one of Gintama's arcs ever had a "sad ending". They always end full of hope despite imperfections. The closest thing to that is the death of Shoyou-sensei. -
RE: Gintama Discussion
I was also disappointed with the yato, but it is not that surprising. Gintoki beated Housen and is on par with Umibozu. Remember that Kamui killed a Yato with one shot. So even among Yato there are ranks and levels of power. Abuto seems to be among the strongest ones seeing how Gintoki and the others ran away. I really like the style of this character. In all mangas that I know, I never saw any other villain of this kind!
About this arc being the final one, even if the chances are real, I don't think it will happen unless Zura appears in the next chapters. In the Benizakura arc, Zura and Gintoki said that they will destroy Takasugi together. And there's also the mimawaragumi guy who still didn't appear. And Oboro too. So unless Sorachi wants to rush the ending, I think that Gintama will still be there for another year at least.Yeah, those guys could still appear, though. The arc's not over.
Then there are other possibilities like this arc is just a "transition" arc or something. Like the villains aren't beaten but the series goes into like a different stage, like after the big war in One Piece.
Sorachi's never been one to just do the DBZ-esque "All these guys are out of commission, that's why only the two main characters can fight". Usually it's just some characters are in the arc or not.
We'll see, I guess. -
RE: Toriko II: Ichiryuu's Slimy Insides!!
It doesn't say Bambina's power dwarfs anybody's. It just meant Bambina is stronger than Heracles.
-
RE: Toriko II: Ichiryuu's Slimy Insides!!
Here, go read our thing:
http://hiwamatanoboru.com/2014/09/25/toriko-294/It's pretty cool. I like the way the story's developing. A lot's really unexpected but it still has hints of design. So now some new subspacy-elements are being introduced.
-
RE: Toriko II: Ichiryuu's Slimy Insides!!
Nobody has a motive to kill Komatsu. It looks like Teppei is just trying to kidnap him and somehow ripping his heart out like that makes it easier. I mean he even says it.
The anime oddly started putting way more blood in towards the end. Especially in the Four Beat arc. The anime-only ending was because otherwise the anime would end on a depressing note. Of Komatsu kidnapped, Toriko depressed, Ichiryuu dead, etc. If they continue it, hopefully they redo that part. Or maybe they'll just ignore it and start from the beginning of Part 2 and ignore the continuity errors.
-
RE: Innocent (Sakamoto Shinichi)
A lot of authors use tablets as opposed to paper and pen. But yeah, this sorta manga would be impossible to do weekly that way.
I dunno why it's usually last in the TOC. The thing is seinen magazines don't put heavy emphasis on that sorta thing. It got some minor awards.
Also, this is unrelated, but they're making a digital version of Kokou no Hito sometime soon, according to the author's Twitter. It's probably just gonna be more or less the same thing as before though. Sometimes the covers are slightly different and the color pages are restored in those.
-
RE: Innocent (Sakamoto Shinichi)
Ah, I knew this thread was around somewhere.
Mangatopia's finally finished V4. V5 should theoretically not take as long but we'll see. I've still gotta translate it because they just sent me the raws the other day, and V6 comes out in September.
This volume's got Marie-Joseph!!! She's so cute! -
RE: Gintama Discussion
i saw that you finished it quickly on MH. Hope BDR overcomes, but I'm glad you're there too.
I do my own translation every week because it became too much work for me to handle to go through his and edit it. Really the grammar and jokes in Gintama are more than he can handle and his TLs have a lot of mistakes for this series. I sometimes look through his to come up with phrasing ideas though.
-
RE: Gintama Discussion
We got it done fast both because it had few words and also because I'm gonna be away for tonight to next Sunday so I'd rather get it done early.
-
RE: Toriko II: Ichiryuu's Slimy Insides!!
I really don't think I'll ever get the mindset of most people in this thread. It seems like the first reaction to everything is draw a million conclusions, usually getting angry that certain things weren't foreshadowed enough or built up long enough. Or things that were foreshadowed or built up long enough ended too fast… or... a hundred other things like a manga has to follow certain rules. It really doesn't. Toriko's one of my favorite manga because it always builds on what it's done before and keeps the story interesting. It never lulls into "Let's do the same thing a million times now." which I really find dull, and a lot of shounen manga do. I think this is pretty cool and I'm sure it'll develop a lot more as the story goes on. They'll probably explain the sort of stuff in the past about how come Toriko is like this, that sorta thing. Remember there was that speech about "Toriko used to be a chain animal" back in chapter friggin' 20, which still hasn't been explained. Learning about Toriko's true nature, and maybe the true nature of the other kings, will be really interesting.
On top of that, if everything is foreshadowed, then there are no longer any surprises in the series. I read stuff like this so much in manga... People seem to complain that it's "too late to start introducing something that important" or something. I never got that mindset. I think bad writing lies in having no development towards something at all. Just "fooling" the audience by saying one thing is happening, then just randomly making it another thing. Or making characters fall into the background, or having things that have no relevance to established themes or goals stretch on forever so the audience gets board. And most of all, just never doing anything new and re-using one formula over and over. Toriko's powers have always had this ambiguity about them, and obviously something had to happen in Gourmet World so the series doesn't become a collect-a-thon. This introduces new conflicts, new characters, new problems and possibilities. I really like that sorta thing. Whether or not the red-oni blue-oni thing was planned from chapter 1 doesn't make it good or bad writing IMO. It's whether or not it makes the story interesting as it continues.
I seriously don't get this conversation of what defines an asspull or not. You can not enjoy it if you don't or enjoy it if you do. But so far we barely know anything about this. It's not even a "power up" because clearly this blue oni is fucked up and dangerous.
-
RE: Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
We finished our scanlation of Volume 1 of JoJolion:
http://hiwamatanoboru.com/2014/07/16/jojolion-volume-1/
I guarantee it's better than that last one where tons of lines were translated wrong, sentences were made up, and people didn't talk like human beings. -
RE: Gintama Discussion
Well, I've generally liked the new chapters. I mean I wouldn't be working on the series if I didn't like it. Gintama never treads too far into the realm of the ridiculous. And the "lessons" thing is part of the theme of the series. Where characters have flaws and try to overcome them or at least deal with them in some way to see that they're okay with their imperfections.
-
RE: Gintama Discussion
This thread's pretty dead, but I thought I'd mention
We finished scanlating V42-43, which was the last gap of chapters we had to do.
http://hiwamatanoboru.com/2014/06/27/gintama-volume-42-43/Though a bunch of earlier chapters don't have very good translations and that sorta thing. I wrote a big paragraph about this whole thing. So now ya don't have any excuse to catch up on the manga.
-
RE: Hiatus x Hiatus III: Goodnight, Sweet Princes
I was watching the horriblesubs of the Ant Arc and one thing really cleared some stuff up for me. The Crunchyroll translator writes the King's line as he walks away from Welfin as "It would be nice if you could meat again and if you could live as a human." When the original chapter came out, everyone thought it meant "Good if I could live as a human". Which he doesn't. The way it's written it LOOKS completely like he's speaking in the first person, but he's speaking in the second person.
-
RE: Hiatus x Hiatus III: Goodnight, Sweet Princes
The voice actor for Pariston, Hiroki Takahashi, was the guy who played Hisoka in the original anime. Heh. Well… heh. Interesting.
Also, this is still the "getting to know what's going on" part of the story so I'm not really expecting any huge things yet. I mean they're gonna leave for the Dark Continent pretty soon, probably. We're still in the establishing motives part. I'm glad Togashi is putting some effort into developing these Beyond's Group dudes first.
-
RE: Toriko II: Ichiryuu's Slimy Insides!!
Ah, that's pretty cool. So we have some dates regarding like, how old characters are and such. Neat. I need to get that book at some point.
-
RE: Toriko II: Ichiryuu's Slimy Insides!!
Aw, that's awesome. There's a Takeshi crossover thingy in that 29.5 book. I really wanna read that. I might try scanlating it if we can, like if it's just one short thing.
-
RE: Toriko II: Ichiryuu's Slimy Insides!!
If somebody buys that Fanbook, let me know if there's anything interesting in it. I read the first book, the Gourmet Hunting Book, and that was basically just like the One Piece data books where it's essentially a summary of stuff in the manga. Rarely any new info.
-
RE: Hunter x Hunter II
Yeah, I'm not translating this series anymore. It just takes a huge amount of time and effort to do, and I really don't have that time at this point. Just doing Gintama and Toriko on a weekly basis can be really frustrating at times, and I'm trying to catch up on stuff I had to put on the backburner for over a year because I was doing 4-5 weekly projects for a couple of years.
Also I'm sure the English Shounen Jump translation's good if you're willing to wait/pay for it. Honestly the whole system scanlations of Jump have of trying sooo sooo hard to get shit out super-fast probably makes a lot of this stuff worse. A lot of the translations of HXH I did probably would've been way better if I had a lot of hours and could've done several passes on them and had people proofreading and helping with them, but if you wanna finish something in like 2-6 hours you can't really do/get that. This chapter and the last one would both really benefit from a lot of time and effort being spent on making it flow well and read easily.
I've been watching the Crunchyroll subs of the HXH anime and remembering back when Molokidan and I were translating HXH, and realized how much better they phrased a lot of stuff and how well the're able to clearly express what's implied or how to get the speech patterns just right so much better than him and me when I was 17-18. A lot of it has to do with just how esoteric the speech patterns get. You need to keep track of what's implied, which character knows what, what everyone's goals are, you need to follow all the logical thought processes, everything about the narrative, etc. Otherwise you can't follow the logistic leaps characters make and convey that sort of thing in English well. You end up with "Well, I don't know why he's saying it but that's what he's saying so I'll just write it literally and hope it makes sense later" kinds of situations. And often you'll choose the wrong definition or a phrasing that gives an English-speaking reader the wrong impression. Or you might even lose track of who the subject/object of the sentence are.
Why are there scanlations that are using the Wild Words Brackets that look like little arrow things ->Like this<- like they're actual punctuation? There're at least a handful of bubbles in Mangapanda's version where they totally fucked up the typesetting… Like the same text is on the same page on page 6 and somebody put in a Skype timestamp in the translation. And there's another bubble that cuts off mid-sentence.
-
RE: Toriko II: Ichiryuu's Slimy Insides!!
It looks like voluems 1-9 have color editions:
http://www.ebookjapan.jp/ebj/search.asp?q=%83g%83%8A%83R+%83J%83%89%81%5B&ebj_desc=off
You can buy them there and read them on a PC. I've tested it. I'm really not that interested in that sorta thing to go about buying them and ripping them. Like, it'd cost a lot and such. If anyone wants to do that, feel free. There's a program called Gadwin PrintScreenPro that allows you to use printscreen and save them to files. -
RE: Hunter x Hunter II
I'm not translating this series anymore because… it's a lot of work and it's in English Shonen Jump anyhow. Especially when you have to do something like this in a couple hours (For a chapter like this, you'd really want to spend a few hours just studying the technical terms and researching the best ways to translate them in a way that's understandable). But don't be too harsh on MS's guy. This chapter seems to be full of "We're not going to explain what this is, we're just going to say it and you'll have to figure out what it means based on context later on." sort of lines. Like, people are referencing tons of events we haven't heard of before, possibly ones that won't be explained at all, they're just there to give some context as to mankind's current understanding of the Dark Continent. I forget who that Kakin guy/organization they're talking about is. I think that's Beyond's group? Or what Tokkou is... There's a page where there's an asterisk on the word Tokkou but it doesn't explain it anywhere. Oh wait, ok Kakin is the country that Beyond is using the authority of to make a voyage to the Dark Continent.
Togashi has a very strong tendency towards not going out of his way to make something clear. He'll have a character suddenly change streams of thought, have characters lie about their motivations, have characters speculate about what's going to happen, etc. Sometimes there are big logistic leaps, sometimes things are pretty much explained straight out. Figuring that all out is hard. And this chapter's made up of like... 80% political/business speeches. A lot of the time in these situations you just need to translate things literally because you, the translator, don't really know what they're talking about so there's little room for interpretation.

RE: Berserk
So, at least for now it looks like they're trying to portray Falconia as a paradise and Griffith as the second coming of jesus. Now, let me know if I forgot something, but does him really being Phemto matter? Can we say he's genuinely doing good things with his power, or is he going to turn into an evil king later? Obviously Guts wants revenge, but do we know why the Skull Knight wants him dead? Is it just because he dislikes the whole "stream of fate" thing and wants to rid the world of God Hand so people can control their own destinies? I've read this series like twice and I can barely remember this.

RE: Toriko II: Ichiryuu's Slimy Insides!!
I spot four treasure chests, they better go collect em.
and I wanna see that dual wielding swordsman too.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Oh and thanks Kewl, it always impressed me how you stay up to 2am for this. I thought you'd have more time given A-Destiny has nothing to do at the moment, but I guess not?
Basically, regardless of how many projects I'm working on have we get raws for Toriko on Tuesday night and have to get through the whole thing in a few hours. Largely this has to do with the fact that people on the team live in Europe and don't really have time to be up to 6AM or later working on this. It's simply that there's a small time frame where it's possible to do unless we are going to wait for everyone to sleep, go to work, and get home the next day. So as I translate it and do some of the typesetting and redrawing as well as releasing, I tend to have the most work to do and can't really just relax and take my time all that much. I also need to manage things and make sure we have people on every task.
Also, with the two animes in Anime-Destiny done or at least between seasons right now, I've got a whole bunch of back projects that I've had to put off for a year or more which I now want to go back to. The last couple months I've been finishing shorter things (The end of Doubutsu no Kuni, Wolfsmund, catching up on Innocent, that sorta thing) and once I'm done with all those I'm gonna try to go back to translating 81 Diver, 3-Gatsu no Lion, Omoni Naitemasu, and The Book (The Jojo novel). I also wanna scanlate Ring and Seikimatsu Leader Den Takeshi at some poin, and hopefully HQ volume scanlations for more of Gintama and Toriko will get done, too.

RE: Toriko II: Ichiryuu's Slimy Insides!!
Dude, a bunch of Jump isn't scanned at all. We're only releasing it like 12 hours earlier than we were because we were able to get an earlier raw source. It's barely any different. But glad you're happy about it anyhow. It's hard as hell to keep up, I keep ending up staying up to like 2AM.

RE: Kingdom
@Purple:
One has been doing releases from chapter 1 with a good amount of dedication and requesting donations only to cover expenses for the volumes they need to buy. The other uses them as complete clickbait.
I know scanlations aren't exactly all legal and everything, but especially because we're just playing the catchup game here with a constant flow of releases from either, Mangajoy really are a bunch of scumbags.
They didn't start at chapter 1, TP started at the end of volume 2. I started working on it at chapter one (TP started like the week after I posted my translation for chapte 1 and then the group I had gotten to work with was competing with them for a while) and then got fucked over by the people I was working with to do a short-lived joint with them. So now I'm only working on the anime. I never got any donations for that, nor do I get any in any groups I run or work with beyond something small like ~50 dollars a year. They're not saints or anything like that. They're just scanlators like any other group of scanlators who occassionally make themselves out to be special possibly because they're working on a popular series. They haven't done anything special worthy of being treated special. The vast majority of scanlators do exactly what they do. They actually posted a really scummy post a few weeks back calling other scanlators lazy and a bunch of other stuff like "They're lying to you if they're asking for donations because they're making tons of money off ads" which is illegal (Also most scanlation groups' sites get very few hits and have no ads anyhow. Most people just read manga off aggregators.) and groups should "just hire better cleaners" which is not something you can "just do", you need people to volunteer and be dedicated and hard working on their own, and call scanlators "slow" just because they're doing just one series, a series which doesn't have that much text in it (it does on some chapters but not every one. Though it can be a bit dense and difficult when it gets wordy) and doesn't have a lot of redrawing/doesn't have very hard redrawing and they're working from high quality digital volume raws, plus they have a dedicated translator for it. They act very condescending, which really annoys me on top of the shitty way they're romanizing names.
That said, I don't think they're doing a bad job scanlating it in general from what I've seen, and if you prefer one group's scanlations over another, feel free to do so. Obviously some groups scanlate stuff just to get their site more hits/be more popular or because they own an agregator site and want ad revenue or whatever. There are certain groups that are much worse and there are plenty of reasons to prefer one group over another and you're certainly allowed to dislike a group because of shitty behavior like how the treat others. And some groups just run a procedure that auto-levels magazine raws, doesn't redraw or join anything and sticks a bad translation on with left-aligned comic scans font and people read them rather than another group doing it in high quality a week later. Also no one's a "thief", they're just breaking copyright, it's a completely different concept. There's no thing being "stolen" which the original holder of the thing doesn't have. One way or another, it does take a lot of work and dedication to scanlate a series to the point of completion no matter who you are. And most scanlators are just trying to share something they love with fans that speak their language.
I really should catch up with this series. There's a gap of like a few volumes I never read between where the 2nd season of the anime finished and where I started keeping track of weekly raws. Ah, I wish I had more free time. I'm just reading the series raw, by the way, as I have been the whole time. I'm glad to see the scanlatiosn are at least about caught up with the releases in Japan now. Last chapter in YJ is I think 286 or so.

RE: Oricon Manga sales
Shingeki no Kyojin's sales thing also includes the like 10 spinoffs Koudansha started. The Junior High parody manga, that flash anime with the swirly eyes, the shoujo thing with Levy, the "Before the Fall" thing. There's a novelization of something, too. Most of those sell at least sorta decently.
Isayama also said the series is only gonna go like 20 volume or so. So like 2~ years from now it'll probably end.
