I knew he sung a song before. (I absolutely loved the English version of "The Sun Will Shine Again.")

RE: The All-New FUNimation Dub Discussion thread!
'I get disgusted'…that just sounds awkward. 'I'm disgusted' or 'XXXX disgusts me' perhaps but that's way too literal a translation. There's just no feeling in it when it's directly translated.
"I'm disgusted" would, in my opinion, be the stiffer-sounding line there.
"…dreams of One Piece, I'm disgusted."
"...dreams of One Piece, it disgusts me."
"...dreams of One Piece, I get disgusted."The last two sound fine (admittedly the second more than the third,) while the first one sounds a bit unnatural. (Maybe due to the wording or the structure of the sentence.) Maybe it's just me.

RE: The All-New FUNimation Dub Discussion thread!
I partly blame Toei for that, seeing as at one point, Toei just sent the video, with NO audio, not even the Japanese audio, or soundtrack, or sound effects.
You're thinking of the next episode previews. Those weren't sent with their original audio. But other than that, everything else was.

RE: Funimation uncut dvd sets
@Lobster:
Anyway, they probably have to keep "Ms. Groundhogs Day", and "Ms. New Years", for continuity =(
For an Uncut DVD only release? Uh, why? Also, if they were doing that for "continuity," this supposed "Alabaster" change would totally screw that up to begin with.
-
RE: If you were 4Kids
I'm just afraid that they would use that line they used in Pirates Carnival.
"Keep on laughin' and keep on truckin'!!"

RE: Funimation uncut dvd sets
I guess I misinterpreted what you were saying, as I was saying that FUNimation's DVDs themselves are playable on those region's players. So if an Aussie wanted, they could import the U.S. released FUNimation Fullmetal Alchemist DVDs, and play them on their DVD players, and if a Japanese person wanted, they could import FUNimation's DBZ DVD box sets and watch those on their standard DVD players. Region codes mean more than just where they're sold.
Oh, I know that, however I thought you were talking about where, in a specific area of the world, FUNi sells their DVDs and what specific region they are exclusive to.
-
RE: Funimation uncut dvd sets
My Fullmetal Alchemist DVDs are regions 1 and 4, and the DBZ box sets as I said are regions 1, 2, and 4. They do distribute outside the US, but they don't do it often.
No, I mean, they usually have someone sub-license them to other parts of the world under their name. FMA and Dragonball Z are distributed by Madman Entertainment to Region 4 parts of the world.
As for Region 2s, I don't think FUNimation can handle Region 2s, either, to the best of my knowledge.
-
RE: Funimation uncut dvd sets
Bootleg. Another thing that gives it away is the Region Code. FUNimation only releases their DVDs in 3 regions last I checked. 1, 2, and 4, or in other words, North America (Canada, and the U.S.), Japan, and Australia. Most of the time they simply do Region 1, more rare is Regions 1 and 2, and I think they only released those DBZ box sets in 1, 2, and 4.
Actually, they only distribute anime within North America. (Region 1.) Any other DVD Regions they tend to branch out on (mostly Australia with Region 4/PAL) are handled by a sub-licensor. This is what I'm recollecting from the best of my memory. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's correct.
However, the fact that the DVD in that link is a Region Free disc should hint to one that it's a bootleg. Outside of a few Asian DVDs and those wacky official VCDs some companies have, there aren't any official Region Free discs.

RE: The All-New FUNimation Dub Discussion thread!
The original, if I remember correctly, has Nami saying (after Sarquiss asks her to join for pay), "Sorry, but you probably don't have enough to buy me," and Sarquiss saying (sarcastically), "Ha! That's pretty expensive!" Him saying, "I like your attitude," and everyone laughing afterwards just seemed odd to me.
If it was like that, which I can't remember because my VCR didn't record that part, then it wasn't all that bad. I thought you meant, "changed the entire point of the speech," which they didn't.
-
RE: The All-New FUNimation Dub Discussion thread!
I just didn't like how they changed Sarquiss' lines when he was talking to Nami and how they edited the simple act of Bellamy taking a drink before spitting.
How did they change Sarquiss' lines?

RE: The All-New FUNimation Dub Discussion thread!
Cole Brown was the narrator of Desert Punk. He does sound like a more gruff version of that narrator, now that I think of it.

RE: The All-New FUNimation Dub Discussion thread!
@dirtmonkeyAL:
Maybe they'll do something similar to what they did with YYH. Either there was already a black box with the kanji over it, or they made a black box over the kanji. I can't remember which.
I suppose I wouldn't mind a black box over the white kanji though if that's how it'll go.
I'm not entirely sure how telop works nowadays. But considering One Piece isn't all that old of a show, maybe they won't have to do that.

Just a quick fix-me-up, since I'm here and I see the song. I also patched some of the Japanese that was mixed up and/or you had problems with. (Heh heh, I need sleep. @__@)

Aren't they still making Detective Conan DVDs? I could have sworn they were pretty far.
-
RE: The All-New FUNimation Dub Discussion thread!
It's fine. Sorry, to give the impression.
I don't really mind any edits. As long as they aren't wacky and the dialogue is sensible and intelligent-sounding, free from bad puns, grade-school potty humor, and non-witty comebacks, ("Give back da treasure…before you become buried treasure." Oh, snap! No Sanji didn't!) I can tolerate CN's biased BS.

RE: The All-New FUNimation Dub Discussion thread!
Yes and we all know Nami spouted a crap too.
I knew that people knew Blackbeard spouted a friggin', but I didn't know if anyone knew that Luffy did as well. If it was stated before, I'm sorry.
-
RE: The All-New FUNimation Dub Discussion thread!
Anyone notice that Luffy and Blackbeard spouted a "friggin'"?
"This cherry pie tastes friggin' horrible!"
"This cherry pie tastes friggin' delicious!"Not much of a big thing, I just found it funny because I hadn't noticed it the first time.
-
RE: The All-New FUNimation Dub Discussion thread!
As long as weapons don't go invisible or miscolored and/or glowy, I'm pretty satisfied.
-
RE: Opening #8 Coming in October! (Plus Filler News)
The Acchino Family, the filler villains this time around.
Also, anyone notice that the Thriller Bark people are drawn and placed in the exact same position they are in the latest manga volume cover, with the exception of Hogback and Moria? (And Odz, since he was never there to begin with.)
The opening is very nice. The rap is an attention grabber for sure, and scrolling-smiling-happy-time ftw!
-
RE: The All-New FUNimation Dub Discussion thread!
BTW, what did they end up calling the drink in the bar that Luffy and Blackbeard are disagreeing over?
"This is one of the worst/best drinks I ever tasted!"
"このドリンクは格別にうめえ(まずい)な!"So, yeah, it's the same.
-
RE: The Use of Speech Patterns in OP
@dirtmonkeyAL:
Oh, yeah, he does slur his words a bit, making him sound a little bit tougher or whatever he thinks he's doing (I find Zoro more funny than scary/badass or what have you). And I get the we talk faster/less clearly than we think, but even his sentence structure seems off to me.
Meh, it's not really his sentence structure. It's just the way he speaks, like ミスターJulian said.
He actually speaks at a pretty normal speed for me, and the annunciation on his words just sounds like he's trying to be tough. I can understand how it can be tough on someone who doesn't have any experience with dialects/talking with actual people. (In fact, without exposure, some of this stuff would just sound like a bunch of clicks and whistles. I was lucky enough to have fast exposure, having an Osakan teach me.)
Besides, I've figured out that nothing is as bad as trying to figure out what Daisuke Gori says in Satsuma dialect performance. (A not-so-well-portrayed one, at that.)

RE: The All-New FUNimation Dub Discussion thread!
@Ao:
She literally laughs and says "No. I'm just kidding" or something. I clearly remember it as I watched that interview and listened to the clips tons of times.
-
RE: The All-New FUNimation Dub Discussion thread!
@Ao:
She asked it then said she was only joking/teasing. And they've said several times his voice does NOT change in heavy form.
Did she say she was teasing? Where did she state this?
By "change," I believe they mean in relation to 4Kids' "Hi, I'm Chopper!" to "RAWR, CHOPPER SMASH!"
-
RE: The Use of Speech Patterns in OP
Japanese used by characters in anime/manga/drama will not sound like it's coming from a normal Japanese person. There is role speech, dialect differentiations, and other little quirks and whatnot sprinkled throughout their speech.
That's all I'm really going to say on that subject. I believe someone could go into a more elaborate explanation. (I was thinking about doing it, but…I have not enough effort to set forth and do so.)
And hmm for the "wari" one… I've heard it as a "thank you" and as a "I'm sorry", what XDD I'm talking about in episode 68 (of cooourse I had to give a Cobymeppo example >>;; shot), when Coby and Helmeppo are hiding from their superiors and Coby says "ok, they won't find us here, please rest for a bit" and Helmeppo answers with a "wari", and it's subbed as "okay, thanks". But also... IF I remember well, after Zoro beats Kaku, he says "wari" and it's subbed as "sorry". Augh I really have no idea XD
悪い (warui) and 割り (wari;) the latter being incorrect.
And people adress her as "-jou", though I'm not 100% sure of its meaning…
嬢 (jou) as an honorific is the rough equivalent to "Miss" in English.
@Brisa:Also, taking the opportunity… I've heard two forms of "thank you" and "sorry"... what's the diference? "thank you" has "arigato" and I'm not sure about how to write the other one... "wari"?. And "sorry" has "gomenasai" and the other one I better not try to write and make a fool of myself XD But I'm curious about the diference.
There are many, many, many ways to apologize and say your thanks. Sumanai can mean "thank you" and "sorry," because its use is really subjugated by the situation.

RE: The All-New FUNimation Dub Discussion thread!
With all these names…Trace, Trace Heat Fist, Grand Compass, Eternal Compass, Zolo...I'm worried when the uncut comes around and they record the replacement lines for this...if they just say the words and they spliced it in...would it sound good? Or are they gonna completely re-record the lines that mention the terms..and if so, will the delivery be as good as the edited?
When they used to do edited and unedited episodes of Yu-Yu Hakusho, the delivery was pretty much identical except for the dialogue changes. (However, that series was originally broadcast uncut, and then edited for later broadcast on Toonami, but the principle still stands.) The same with their Dragonball releases.

RE: New Official Viz Manga Discussion
@Preston:
Ahh, I was under the impression that Shonen meant Young Man or something like that.
Yes. It means that as well. However, the focus of Weekly Shonen Jump has always been the young males/boys.
And, of course, I know when you flip that picture over to the US, things have to be adapted as so, and thusly, you attract a different audience…mostly older. Some things that are acceptable as a standard for a young boy to know and/or view are a bit more taboo over in the States.
-
RE: The All-New FUNimation Dub Discussion thread!
might have been kinda unintended though… more foreshadowing than anything else so I can forgive it
I think that it was in the original episode preview, but I'm not entirely sure.
-
RE: The All-New FUNimation Dub Discussion thread!
He calls it the land of something in the preview. It was REALLY hard to make out. It sounded like the land of "Skills" or "stilts"? Maybe he says "Land of steaks?"
From the CC: "It's an island of springs!"

An EYECATCHER?

RE: New Official Viz Manga Discussion
Shonen = Boy
Shueisha's Japanese Shonen Jump is a primarily targeted towards children and pre-adolescents.
-
RE: One Piece: Unlimited Adventure (Wii)
But, really, "Chaser" was expected. Remember, that the tv dub is keeping some names from the past dub for continuity sake. Don't see why people are surprised on that particular note.
I'm just particularly surprised because I heard that "Zolo" would be "Zoro" in this game. So, I assumed that all that other stuff would be taken care of as well. Apparently, it was not, but it's no big deal (to me, at least.)
-
RE: New Official Viz Manga Discussion
Actually, it's Viz complying with corporate policy; their parent company Shueisha owns the Roronoa Zolo trademark.
I'm not completely sure this is the same with all of Viz-owned properties, though. It probably is, though, and I'm just being stupid. XD
-
RE: New Official Viz Manga Discussion
Well, that's just on part of Viz conforming to whatever the holders of anime license want to do. But, they don't really fix typographical or graphical mistakes all that often.
-
RE: Opening #8 Coming in October! (Plus Filler News)
Yay! I get to translate pigeon-scratch summaries here too! (Although, I must admit, these are written much better than some of the others are.) This is probably all I can do though, because I got more Yugi-mons to translate. :D Mysterious Party of Pirates! The Sunny and a Dangerous Trap
The Strawhats, who have all safely departed Water Seven and added Franky as a new part of the crew, still sail smoothly on their voyage with their new ship, the Thousand Sunny, straight towards "Fishman Island." Before they know it, the ship plunges into Winter Island ocean territory. Luffy and Chopper are simply estatic to feel the snow after a long time, but it is there that signs of a ship draw near.. -
RE: New Official Viz Manga Discussion
not really.. why would he have to save it if it's unbreakable?
Well, "unbreakable" is a valid translation. And the reason he would say so is because the flag is still standing, even if he is holding it.
I don't think SJ's editors ever doing anything with updating a mistake. They're pretty damn lazy when it comes to that stuff.
-
RE: The All-New FUNimation Dub Discussion thread!
Played around with it a bit…Sorry :D
Robin: They say the proof is in the puddin'…
Sanji: Or in dis case, a treasure chest. Offscreen Though, puddin' is a great side dish, ya know?
See here? This explains everythin' about everythin'.
Seeing as this picture looks old, I would say that the abandoned ship is equally old. This is one handy book.
Even the one in this lockbox? -
RE: One Piece: Unlimited Adventure (Wii)
@EvilGamerX:
The reason the content will be edited is because the game is marketed towards a family oriented environment and there is no need to include content such as nicotine use or the japanese voice-overs as they will neither add to nor remove from the overall enjoyment of the title.
Duh, whuh…?
Well, looks like I'm not buying this one. Off to Play-Asia!!
-
RE: The All-New FUNimation Dub Discussion thread!
Don't forget, there would've been a LOT of pointless dialog during the scene where Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji were exploring the sunken wreckage.
Sees picture of lady"Hey, look at dis beautiful lady."
Sees the spear through its head "Yeesh, looks like she had a splittin' headache." -
RE: The All-New FUNimation Dub Discussion thread!
海王類 [and snip]
You know, I actually mistook what he said as "What are the words for 'Sea King.'" As in, the actual word, "Sea King." My mistake.
-
RE: The All-New FUNimation Dub Discussion thread!
What is the exact literal translation for whatever Japanese words we've come to understand "Sea King" to be?
海 = Kai
王 = Ou"Kaiou" = "Sea King"
However, "Kaiousei" (海王星) is the name for planet Neptune in Japanese. And any word with 海王 in it is mostly referred to as "Neptun[word]."
-
RE: The All-New FUNimation Dub Discussion thread!
@Pass:
The banana with hair line, now that I've reheard it, is the only line I didn't like. What was the original line in the Japanese version of that scene?
Basically the same thing, only switched around in order. Replace bananas with hair with pumpkins/squashes.
-
RE: The All-New FUNimation Dub Discussion thread!
I thought the re-writes made the show ten times better, but alas..
I thought so too. And it made Desert Punk twenty times more enjoyable.
-
RE: One Piece: Unlimited Adventure (Wii)
I'm hoping that this guy is like…you know...wrong.
-
RE: One Piece: Unlimited Adventure (Wii)
So, they are calling him "Chaser"? I thought they alleviated all of that. Didn't they?
-
RE: New Official Viz Manga Discussion
Yeah. (Damn, that was the choice of wording I was gonna use, but didn't.) "It will not fall to the likes of you!" The wording was a bit different in the anime than in the manga, but it's still basically the same thing.
And if you like that, you should listen to this gem of a beauty from their YGO collection:
"If you want to kill me…you'll have to kill the cards!" from "俺を殺すなら,カードで殺せ!" ("If you're going to kill me, kill me with cards!")
Damn genero-translations. Sometimes I think that some companies run dialogue through Excite Translator and fix up the results…
-
RE: New Official Viz Manga Discussion
Looks like a context error.
「お前なんかに折れるもんか」 <–[talking about the flag:] "None of you guys are gonna break it!"
「ほらな、折れねぇ...」 <–-[talking about the flag:] "See? Not broken…"I remember the anime made it a bit more specific, but that's what I remember from the manga. But, don't worry, I can assure you Viz has made a mistake on more than one occasion. (And you can usually tell, because the sentences make no sense whatsoever.)
-
RE: The All-New FUNimation Dub Discussion thread!
I just thought they might be better examples to get the point I've been trying to make across.
Probably. If I had seen the series in question, maybe it would have.
But I guess what I'm trying to say is, the japanese have a tendency of just slapping a deep voice in any character who's tall or acts tough… Maybe because they have deeper voices in any general... More so than other languages. And I'm not just talking about english here, just about any language. Just my opinion, though.
There's a difference between "gruff" and "deep." You can have a gruff voice that is not deep at all, and you can have a deep voice that isn't gruff.
Kazuya Nakai's rendition of Zoro is a tad lighter than Chris Sabat's, to me. This is mostly because Sabat has a lot more natural bass in his voice than the average human…I mean, person. However, as you could see in the recent 144, Nakai can control his pitch better when yelling to take hold of the boat or in bits of comedy ("できるか!!"), whereas, Sabat slips into Piccolo-ish deepness. (I now see what everyone was talking about there. I had to check the beginning of the episode to make sure.)
