But is it not pronounced the same either way ? I could care less if it's romanized as "Gedatz" or "Gedatsu".
Think of "Raditz" from Dragonball Z. Pronounced the same as if you spelled it "Radits," but spelled with a "z."

Quick questions: I've been reading that Ken-Oh (wouldn't that be translated as King Ken?) is the final boss. I can't remember if I've seen him or not, but the constant image I get in my head is that he fights on his horse (Kokuoh-go, what an awesome name). Is this true?
Ken-Oh ("King of the Fists/Styles") is the final boss, but it's basically Raoh with a hell of a lot more attack and defense (and pumped up attacks.) Also, the horse is "Koku-oh," with the same "-go" suffix used for ships and steeds.
Also, about the whole Yuria/Julia or Yuda/Juda thing, does "J" not exist in Japanese or something? Because they're always being changed up and what not. Makes for some confusing stuff.
Technically, the "Yu" sound can be replaced with "Ju" in English and retain the same pronunciation. The "j" exists in the Japanese language ("ja," "je," "ji," "jo," "ju") and is pronounced as you may expect. But, the "Julia" is sort of pushing the spelling to make it sound more like an English name. (Manga Entertainment ftw.)
However, Viz has nothing to do with Bobobo (outside the manga.) That anime is being handled by Illumitoon.
@Yuugi's:
Horoko-sempai, '-cha' was left in YGO volume eight!
That I know. I believe they also did it for Volume 28 with Jonouchi' calling Malik "Malik-chan." I just wondered why every other suffix honorific was cut off except for that one. Then, you said JN Productions and I remembered they have a habit for doing that. However, I'm debating if it was just a decision on their part or a decision on Viz's part, (which, honestly, makes my head hurt.)
@Geg:
I think the only reason -chan was left in there is because the dialogue wouldn't have made sense without it. I guess they could have translated it as Mai saying "Lil Yugi" or something, but eh.
It just seems really awkward to me to have that one honorific there if they are perfectly content with adapting the others with an English equivalent.
@Yuugi's:
JN Productions
Always wondered why every other honorific under the sun except "-chan" was left alone in some Viz releases. Now I know the reason :P
Technically, there is. However, their "v"s are different than are. It's more of a "Ui" sound for their v's.
The "wi" (ウィ) actually has a "ui" sound. The "v" kana (va, vi, vo, ve, vu) sound much like they would in English.
@Aethos:
I never really got why they called it Vearth in either version. I mean if it's a reference to something it went over my head.
Earth plus a V.
@Really:
Wonder why they kept all of Zoro's other attacks in Japanese except "3000 Worlds."
Probably translation awkwardness issues. I expect his Cannon attacks to be translated as well.
Tests would have been fine, really. Trial, Ordeal, Test, even Challenge would have been suitable. The "I.Q." slapped on randomly just seems sort of unneeded to me.
Once again, damn you, Toei Animation Co. Ltd!
"Shi-ren"
"Or-deal" and "Trial" would be even less syllables.
Damn you, Toei Animation Co. Ltd!
Well the guy who played Enel was the guy who played Dartz in Yugioh! I thought he had a decent voice, but I kind of wanted one that was deeper, not high sounding.
Wayne Grayson is the name. He has a pretty good vocal range when he's not constantly doing bad accents.
The Noa arc wasn't all that bad. It seemed a bit misplaced, though. (A giant base comes out from the ocean just as they're in route to the next canon plotpoint location? Uh-huh…) The ending rocked (and was well animated.)
Doma was pretty well written. They strayed far from the plot with the whole "Atlantis n' the Duel Monsters World LOL!" But other than that, I think they gave the filler characters and the regular cast a lot of development.
Oh, but that first time the Virtual World was mentioned was pure horse shit. (At least it wasn't that long.) But, t's actually the canon stuff they have problems with. The Pharaoh's Memory arc was just...wow...
And while I'm at it, I have to say the Viewtiful Joe adaptation had me fooled into liking it for a while.
It's part of his character. Also, their English translation for Santoryu "Three Sword Style Technique", is twice the amount of syllables (six).
That was only for Three Thousand Worlds. "Three Sword Style Technique - Three Thousand Worlds" (Santouryuu Ougi - Sansen Sekai.) It would normally be "Three Sword Style" (San-tou-ryuu.)
For serious? I coulda sworn that line was "risking life and limb." Sounds more like it and makes more sense too. Oh well.
My thoughts exactly. :blink:
Hm. So it is "Crisp and light and layered"? That line makes me hungry, for some reason.
p.s.-My only problem was that Zoro says "three-Sword Style" instead of "Santoryu".
Question…answered...?
I think I said that in one of the FUNimation dub threads as well, but I don't remember which one.
That's also the same reasoning that could be behind the "Endless Varse" thing.
That "crisp and light and layered" line is actually "risking life and limb." (Sorry for repeating myself. Didn't know if anyone heard it the first time.)
Only because they don't want kids going "ZOMG WHY ARE THEY CALLING 'THE CHAZZ' MANJOUME SANDAA?!"
I can understand why they pulled that with Yugioh GX.
They don't even call Manjoume "Manjoume Thunder" in the manga. It doesn't seem like they plan to either since they haven't even touched on any form of North Branch of the Duel Academia, just the American Academia where David Rabb and Reggie MacKenzie come into play.
Honestly, if they left the names alone, they would have saved themselves a lot of trouble when the American characters come into play. Plus, they left the majority of the names (except for Pegasus, who seemed to flip-flop between names every single chapter) alone in their original YGO release, and everyone knows that the dub anime ran for a long while in the US before the American Shonen Jump even hit shores.
Very nice. Is it too late to register for this event? I'd like to attend this since I'm close to the NY area anyway.
I don't know if anyone posted this, but that "Crisp and light as air" line in the FUNimation version of We Are is supposed to be "Risking life and limb."
But I DO think that guy is an utter crap duelist.
There's nothing wrong in that. But, make an effort to comprehend some words…
I was ironic.I basicly put Judai's entiere duel shitidnes in between his name.I mean,NO ONE CAN TELL ME HE'S GOOD AT DUELING.
That's not being ironic. Your answer to Korobooshi's question is, however.
GX's dub is filled with wooden/unbelievable voice acting, whacked out dialogue accompanied by unfunny jokes, and shitty edits (whenever they seem to pop up; their system of censorship is odd.)
The Japanese version is no great masterpiece, but at least I can watch it and take it half-seriously. (You know, the whole "Judai's relationship with a gender confused Duel Monster who planned to combine dimensions to destroy everything that ends with Judai gaining supernatural abilities" storyline…thing...thingy thing...)
Whenever they couldn't use the original audio for Pikachu cause of audio problems, they had someone else fill in.
Yeah, I know that. I was just being an ass. :P
So, Chopper's new voice actor sounds like the Japanese voice actor?
How I don't look forward to the day the subs get their turn to be picked apart :sad:
Prepared to get your PM box flooded with thousands upon thousands of "IT'S GOMU GOMU!!!1", "NO EFFECTS FOR ATTACKS?!?!", and "NAKAMA, FAG!!" messages.
Well I wasn't saying you said that either. I was just pointing out some of the other things people complained about in regards to Yugioh.
The visual edits are a small akin from the constant pun-shit-and-bad joke-fest that is the English dub.
and I guess you're right about there being room for improvement, but I guess I just trust that Viz knows what it's doing enough that I try not to think too much about the really small things.
I tend to distrust any English manga company, for some reason. I've completely given up on Tokyopop, for example. I heard they've gotten better, but who knows. Meh, I guess that's just me, though.
Besides I would think Gintama's use of netspeak is far worse. XD
Viz's manga department in general needs some improvement. There's so many weird lines in their adapted manga, it's not even funny.
Yeah but my point was that the big white boxes never really affected me, and well I'd have had to read the Japanese raws or the scans or something to know that they edited Jounouchi flipping the bird at someone or editing out crosses.
I didn't even say anything about the art edits. I was merely talking about the stuff that just looks lazy. Like half edited lines, non-edited lines, huge white boxes with super small text, and dialogue mistakes (calling characters by the incorrect name and whatnot.) I couldn't care less about the art edits now, since I know that's bound to happen anyway.
I'm not saying Viz is 4Kids, or something, I'm just saying that there's definite room for improvement.
Well I can agree to the tiny print being annoying… but still I never felt the big wihite boxes detracted too much from the presentation. Overall I liked reading the Yugioh graphic novels and only learned about these "flaws" it had through Janime.
And I'm the one who noticed some of these flaws as they came out as I was on Janime along with others, so you see my distress.
@Gorlom:
Horoko I know roughly what a tankobon(sp?) is. I put it within citation marks because I don't consider the english volumes tankobans. (due to the word beeing japaneese instead of english)
I don't really give a rats about shipping as I'm not trying to buy it.
Never mind, I'm sure Kitsune was jokeing anyway.
Ah, I see. My bad.
could you give me the numbers for how much a "tankoban" costs, how many chapters it has and what the magazine costs and how many series it has? (and if it has more then one chapter of each)
A "tankobon" (単行本) is the equivalent to a Graphic Novel. However, sometimes chapters may be omitted and put into the next volume instead. Prices vary depending on international shipping, but you can search Amazon Japan for a rough estimate.
@Aethos:
Well as long as I'm able to read the manga I'm not exactly going to call it a shitty job.
You're making it sound like it's unreadable.
I'm not saying their unreadable, but they're handled pretty lazy. And sometimes, it is a little hard to read.
The "Duelist" volumes gradually got a little better after Volume 1, but it's kind of hard to read something that's in super super tiny text and placed in a big white box because someone was too lazy to do some Photoshopping.
Urg, thanks for reminding me about Gan Fall. Now we're getting to an old man…hopefully FUNi either got an old man to voice him or someone who can sound like an old man. Last thing I'd wanna hear is the ol' Master Roshi effect where a young guy tries too hard to sound young. >_o;
Well, they got the Gorosei to sound like elderly men, so I'm not thinking that they'll do something over the top and wacky like they did for Dragonball Z.
Meh well I have all the yugioh graphic novels so I wasn't complaining. Heck if anything I got pissed when Yugioh Millenium world pulled that October 2007 release. I mean that was just plain dumb considering Yugioh could have ended by now. Talk about dragging the series out.
I'd rather have them do a through job and take their time than rush them out a do a shitty job. But, mostly in the case of Viz's manga department, they sometimes do a shitty job and delay things for no reason. :/
well not really. Didn't they only show the first seven volumes and the final arc in the magazine? Yugioh was handled a little differently than YYH.
They finished up to the Monster World story (Battle 59) in the manga before Viz went "lol arcskip" and jumped all the way to Battle 279. Then, they did all the middle stuff in graphic novel form, (which meant more laziness, such as white-boxes-o-doom and missing text, and non-edited Japanese text.)
Yeah, it could be a meat pun, but I think it's more descriptive than subjective. Botan (牡丹) can also be used to describe something that is big and brilliant, and sometimes the subject does actually look like a flower, (like fireworks, snowflakes, etc.)
Actually, it's ゴッド(神) エネル not ゴット エネル. Furigana (the little hiragana/katakana above kanji and such) is used to differentiate the readings between certain words. (IE: "Fairy Vearth" from "Endless Vearth.")
Raoh: "I, Raoh, need not the aid of others to return to the heavens. Farewell. I'm returning to the heavens. I have not one bit of regret in my life!!"
Narrator: "These men once fought…They left behind peace for a time and scattered it across the heavens and the earth."
I'm specifically talking about the edited TV version though.
So am I. It would be pretty odd if they skipped two entire episodes just because they weren't relevant enough to the main plot, even if they are a continuation of the previous special. Especially after them saying they wouldn't be doing any skipping to begin with. Who knows, they might dub the Specials too.
Actually, since those episodes were actually counted as episodes (and given numbers), I don't think they will.
@Tokoro:
Actually the anime version of the finale is a bit nicer: Kaiba actually watches the ceremonial duel instead of appearing for no reason whatsoever at the end and they sort of have a "life goes on" epilogue. I think that at this point, Takahashi just wanted to end it since he pretty much was at the end of the story's line anyway. (even if he did character designs and maybe early concepts for YGO GX)
But they practically raped all the stuff prior to that. Seriously, 70% of the stuff the anime did made no sense at all. This includes possessing Honda, a Zork VS Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon fight, Atem having a Triple Millennium Contact Fusion with Chaos Soldier and Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon, a random fight in Kul Elna with random Egyptian-themed monsters…The list goes on.
The anime just added a lot of unnecessary fluff. It was like they were trying to appease all those who wanted to see all the characters again.
And Takahashi-sensei works along with Itou-sensei and Kagemaru-sensei on the YGO R and GX mangas respectively in the storyboarding process. So, it's not like he completely denies those two even exist like some people think.
Besides the song sounds like they are saying "Fun is just something that grown ups in bed did."
Now I have new reasons to hear that song again! Huzzah!
It'sall in walk point (full raindeer form). I mean come on… "walk boost"? how is it boosted in anyway its the way he was born.
Heavy "boost" suffers a bit of the same problem. it sounds silly to have it cvalled a boost.
Technically, I can see where they got "Boost" from. Since the kanji 強化 = "Power up" and that's what's below the furigana for "point." Same thing with that whole "Endless Varse" thing for "Fairy Vearth." It's 4Kids's handywork, but I can see the sense in it…somewhat. (Actually, my explanation only explains their pointlessness in a way.)
From the first half of the movie that I saw, the best thing about it was the voice actors imitating Bon Clay when he changed into them. I don't remember them doing that in the tv version.
They did in the anime.
"RUN, ROBIN! GET TO DA BOAT!"
G-Zass Christ…
We Are but did you say hes doing Believe also?
But Believe was original sung by a woman…
