@Palochka: I'm okay with an occasional Bink's Sake, but I'd really like them to have Brook play something else during downtime/filler, OR if they insist on using BS, make a version thats not just a single violin playing for background music. Chopin's etude in e would have been great for the flashbacks, or even for the entire fight (they would've had to speed the whole ep up though) playing soft and light in the background while Luffy is helpless to save everyone.

RE: Next Crew Member Speculation (Ver 3.0)
But jejune, how does Nico Robin fit then? When she joined she had a MUCH higher bounty than Luffy, the 2nd highest known to the OP world at the time. While I admit a bounty growth is unlikely to occur for a long while, I don't see "not an underdog" as a reason to disqualify a candidate. That said, I'd much rather have Inazuma join the crew, with some reason that explains why (s)he's in the revolutionary movement.

RE: The inevitable - Anime reaches Manga discussion
The anime really needs to put some serious distance between itself and the manga. I rewatched Arabasta recently, and when I saw Water 7 afterwards, it just felt so painfully slow. Having a 2chap:ep ratio again sounds fantastic, but would probably require the usage of ALL the cover stories, each strawhat getting a significant side-story on their respective islands, and perhaps a standalone filler arc after Fishman Island. Ever since Skypiea ended, the pacing has just been terrible ithis frantic attempt to prevent collision with the manga. While recent 1:1 eps have been decent due to Oda putting more and more side-material in per chapter, I don't think he can keep that up forever. What then :P

RE: Powerup Predictions and Discussion
As mentioned, Asura was built up to with the "demonic aura" Zoro kept being seen with up till then. I think they could have built it up a LITTLE more (at least a chapter with a head slightly showing first), but I say fair game.
Sanji's was really out of nowhere. The way he tied it to cooking made it sound like he knew how to use Diable Jambe all along, but decided not to.

RE: Powerup Predictions and Discussion
Luffy: Has been said to train, mentioned in his conversation with Bleuno about how he was worried after the Aokiji fight. Also when he fought Kuma the others all knew about G2, 3 and their effects on his body, hence "is it okay for you to use both gears like that?". Before everyone started blaming his strength on HAKIGEARS (which I detest to the highest degree) there have only been a handful of times hwere Luffy's growth is obvious. Kreig (the first serious beatdown), Bellamy (the 1-hit KO), Foxy (getting back up despite being beaten to death), then shortly before Bleuno (taking down 500 soldiers on his lonesome). All other fights used some weakness (vs Logias, fire for Mr. 3), or were just Luffy being Luffy.
Zoro: Constant training. Only one that consistently grows every arc. If there is a shonen cliche in One Piece, Zoro is it. But cmon, he's ALWAYS training.
Nami: I'm sure she experiments with the perfect Climatact plenty during the ship's downtime.
Usopp: Besides the SK persona, Usopps greatest growth has been in Kabuto, being able to shoot out all sorts of nonsense now. Also his range is battle-worthy now, compared to Arabasta.
Sanji: Only one with ambiguous growth. His attacks just get stronger out of nowhere, really. Major growth from Baratie, to Arabasta (antimanner kickcourse), to Enies Lobby.
Chopper: Monster point was developed pre-crew, as were all his forms/attacks.
Robin: Same as Chopper. Has actually gotten weaker since her joining. Went from taking down the leader of an army with his own weapons, then dropping him off a cliff (Skypiea), to only taking grunts down, and the occasional teamup. She could have taken out the slave-driver of Tequila Wolf.
Franky: Not enough time has really passed to ask of major growth.
Brooke: Same. -
RE: Good filler and bad filler
Loguetown fillers actually were relevant, and Usopp's goggles were planned out by Oda. Sanji's tourney made relative sense, didn't take up too much time, plus we got Buggy extras. Plus we got anime version of Crecent Moon, and the Gold Roger bar was pretty cool.
Warship Island. Kid centric. Stupid fruit. Stupider boss enemy. Fancy animal made to acomodate plot.
Arabasta filler. Slowed the Strawhats down, random poneglyph, stupid bounty hunter's kids, most retarded umbrella heads, other Ace fillers were all cool.
Post-Arabasta. Chopper-Robin stuff made Robin's introduction a little less sudden, paper salesman was… ugh, curry episode was amusing just because I started making curry often right about then, fireworks were kid-centric :(, Johnny/Yosaku was a cool backstory for Zoro
Goat Island. Centered around old man. Stupid profession. Stupid boss enemy. Stupid animal used to acomodate plot.
Rainbow Mist: COMPLETELY kid centric, even the old people were kids, GOD I hated this time traveling normal island, ELECTROMECHA shit. They tried to explain it with "we didn't tell you we were alive because we NEEDED TO GROW STRONGER" Bleach level bull.
G8: Loved it. About Strawhats, had an awesome villain that didn't even need a DF, great comedy "that fine-tempered snake?", and fit perfectly in continuity. Plus, Movie 4 introduced Naravone waaaay back.
Davey Back Fight fillers: Painful and nonsensical, but acceptable because thats the entire premise of DBF. Lame and slow, but acceptable.
Ocean's Dream: Pretty cool, a sneaky way to recap everyone's backstories. There was a kid, but it wasn't the center of it. Arc started out cool, ended meh with the giant seahorse. But it was a nice prelude to Robin's memories. I thought the idea of the arc was pretty clever. Island even had a 'theme' the giant reef.
Foxy's Return: Pretty cool honestly, but this and all Foxy returns don't make sense. Again, the premise of Foxy/DBF, so I accept it. The fights were filler-funny, but funny nonetheless. Really funny in the way that Team Rocket never got ridiculously boring and old.
EL Recaps: I got tired of watching Luffy push everyone off after the FIRST repetition, so seeing it like 8-fold was not cool.
Post-EL fillers: Kid-centric for Luffy and Zoro, generic faces, terrible. Zoro had like 12 kids, especially terrible, with terrible terrible art. Random pirate Oda designed (mikazuki) had more detail than every other character, Zoro included. Sanji's was pretty cool though. Everything made sense, and no retarded designs, and not kid-centric. Old Sanji was fantastic.
Ice Hunter Arc: Island theme, random characters, decent pirate Captain. The crew was somewhat lacking though. The Atchino family was okay, but the fights were obviously filler material (ie pitiful usage of Gear2). That said, the entire arc was a cool way to break in the sunny. Flag substory was great though.
Chopperman: Not REALLY filler, but I enjoyed it anyways.
Mugiwara theatre: Again, not REALLY filler, and I enjoyed it.
Spa Island: Foxy, so I'm not taking it super seriously, and free fanservice. Otherwise, the eps were kind of lame and kid-centric.
Brooke joins the crew: Everyday life, was pretty cool, actually. I was plesantly surprised.
Everything with Edo Japangu: Good in between breaks, a fun way to reintroduce old villains over and over. Buggy is well remmebered, so is Bentham because of these. -
RE: K-F One Piece 257
The K-F crew have all been onboard for so long, their lives conflict with subbing, wheras most younger groups seem to be either in college or younger. Unless they get some new recruits, I don't expect the speed of release to increase anytime soon.

RE: Next Crew Member Speculation (Ver 3.0)
Hancock/Perona are both overpowered. They both have virtually unstoppable attacks, Perona doubly so with her explosions and hollows. Bentham still has the voice issue (which despite examples like Family Guy, I refuse to back down on, as comparing the two, they have EXTREMELY similar voices, so one of the two would have to have a significantly different tambre), and Margret/Keimie etc are out of the picture now. The remaining candidates in my pov remain:
Ivanova, Jinbei.
-
RE: Next Crew Member Speculation (Ver 3.0)
I know he likely won't join, but Jinbei is still my pick.
1. "I have a dream"- Independent protection of Fishman Island, as Whitebeard's reign begins to falter with instability (pure speculation, really)
2. "Fulfilment duties ex: watch, shipwright, musician etc"- Where most cast have an old man/well versed mentor, Jinbei can fill this roll. A Roshi, if you will.
3. "sad past"- Fishman Island, etc.
4. "Valuable asset on the team ex: DF or Knowledge"- Fishman, etc.
5. "follows captains orders"- Indebted to Luffy for the chance to repay Whitebeard, possibly for aiding Fishman Island if something goes wrong later.
6. "A nakama for good times and bad times"- Yes.
7. "Have a comedy level like the strawhats"- Our quirky comedy characters now include Chopper, Brooke, Franky and Usopp. Our super level-headed folks are Zoro, Robin, Nami. Jinbei can be another serious player. But barring Jinbei, I await Ivanova's personality and motivations.

RE: Sanji vs. Laboon
Laboon falls, crushes the Sunny, swallows its remains and swims one body length below the water, then spits Sanji out. Already he's too deep to reach the surface in time.
EDIT: Really, just voting for Laboon out of pity. Poor whale. I'm hungry for some whale now.

RE: Next Crew Member Speculation (Ver 3.0)
Our goofy:neutral:ungoofy ratio on the crew is something like 4:3:2, has been getting on the high side again, a serious contender would be a nice balance.
(zoro robin on the serious, sanji nami usopp on the 'normal' side, and all else on the goofy)
@zik: how many chapters did it take to show Robin had anything but a polite chuckle when everyone else was cracking up?

RE: 398: ''Admiral Kizaru Moves! The Sabaody Archipelago in Chaos!''
Man, some COOL animation going on this episode, almost as awesome as last week. Filler fighting material with new characters should be banned.
"are these guys really rookies?!" nyuk nyuk nyuk. Law's ability animated is nice though. Hopefully Kidd's ability will be less lazily animated less time (sprites moving across the screen, moving in circles as they do! woooo). And now I'm pretty sure a good nap and lots of water is in store for me good night all!

RE: Is Haki a Technique? Should it be Translated?
This, among their disregard for formatting and font variety are why I don't read FH for OP and FMA.
-
RE: Is Haki a Technique? Should it be Translated?
Oh christ. Let's use D.Gray Man here as an example. They say AKUMA (ooh, special word, its in JAPANESE, its goddamn COOL), but it is translated as demon. Perhaps Demon, since it is a proper noun in the context of the series. The same with haki. Unless there is some pronounciation-specific meanings (ie Zoro's Oni Giri) or it is already in another language (Oda is pulling the ANOTHER LANGUAGE IS COOL schtick) or the romanization of that word is seen constantly on signs or something, then it SHOULD be translated. God, I GET that some of you think anything said in another language is some fantastic awesome new thing, but really, its not. I can say Shihada in english, and GOD it could be THE MIGHTY SWORD OF AWESOME. But in reality it is "I'm taking a piss" in Korean.
And on the issue of untranslatable words, ANY close translation, even vague translation, is better than "lets leave it alone and let the readers/watchers define it with magic". When translating perhaps a TL note could be used to clarify its original meaning during the word's early usage. But "ambition or willpower or determination or power derived from the prior definitions" will not be as effective. A word gains some meaning in its simplity.
Actually, I have another example from comics. So its already in English, no translation fury required. Take Iron Fist, who is a martial artist who does not have a metal hand. The energy of the Iron Fist has been used in the past to give arrows or other more destructive power. See how that's like haki? He can imbue a bo staff with his Iron Fist, and it has some of his strength. See how its in English, but you understand that Iron Fist doesn't mean "A clenched hand made of an element mined from the earth". You can just say "Iron Fist" rather than "Energy of the Iron Fist", and its still comprendable.
Perhaps I'm a bit ranty, but really, this doesn't require so much heated discussion, to which I am now participating in.
EDIT: And since I'm pretty sure a mod will read this, could a space be somehow added to my name, since the forum format breaking was really unintentional and an undesired side effect.

RE: 397: ''A Huge Panic! The Struggle in the Auction House!''
@Skull Kid: Much thanks. :( next two episodes should be fantastic.
@m00n: to be fair, this arc has been pretty great so far in terms of animation, let them off with this one. We have the three captain fight and then Kuma coming up. That said, even the freeze frames looked horrible, ie all of Rayleigh's frames. Oy.

RE: One Piece 396 by Yibis
Just curious, what media player do you all use to play Yibis's mp4 releases? I've been fine with vlc, but their subtitles are honestly underdeveloped, and the new version takes forever to load them. MPC doesn't load them at all. Whats your preference?

RE: 397: ''A Huge Panic! The Struggle in the Auction House!''
University network; they frown heavily upon p2p applications, and here they've gotten quite good with tracking that sort of thing. Which means I've learned to adapt to irc and megaupload. Megaupload is my friend :)

RE: Which Straw Hat member do you think has the most tragic backstory?
I'm going to just quickly run through your article
The monkeys: Isolated from birth, they have no social contact to draw upon. While Anderson, McCain and a few of the other POWs were able to return to society mentally whole (their reabilitation times were relatively short), Felton was not. Why? Because he did not have anything to cope with. The more the mind has to draw upon, the more it can occupy itself with before social incapacitation will fall upon it. They generally attempted death before submitting to insanity. And well,… look at Brooke, thats exactly how he coped. By saying he was already dead.
Brook dealt with his madness with memories and bone-dry humor (okay, not really dry humor. But you know what I mean). He also had his ship and the bodies of his crewmates to keep himself physically occupied. I don't deny that that is still terrifying, but he has those memories to draw upon, and with the exception of reflex-defensive bad and dirty humor left from his withdrawl/insanity of the time, he came out relatively sane.
And yeah, Sanji is placed way too low on everyone's scales. Starvation scares the shit out of you, I'll testify having a) survived college (joke, i joke!) and b) survived being stranded in the woods for days (after which you convince yourself to identify what food is edible/water sources/you know. surviving).
EDIT: I must add that for Robin, I personally put more weight on the trust issues that came with her past, as the "everyone died" bit is in everybody's past.
-
RE: Which Straw Hat member do you think has the most tragic backstory?
Robin, Robin, and Robin. How is this even a contest?
Let me elaborate
-Robin had no family except an abusive aunt and an uncle who didn't care enough to stop his wife.
-Brook as far as we know had no tragic family issues.-Robin is shunned by her entire community for the first 8 years of her life. Not "people don't talk to her" shunning, "parents actively guide their children away from her and the children throw rocks at her" shunning.
-Again, we can assume because it wasn't mentioned, that Brook's childhood was relatively untragic.-Robin and Brook both find a family to be around, the historians and the pirates
-The government destroys the only people Robin is close to, and though she meets her mother, it is for barely a few hours. The giant she befriended recently is frozen before her eyes by another man. The second home (only home), the library, is burned before her eyes by government bombardment and fire. Her mentor is shot thorugh the heart point blank. She knows that everybody else from the island also died, for the 'crime' of researching the past, not by a impersonal source like disease or natural disaster, but from human intent to kill.
-Brook's captain was killed off by an unfortunate disease, but the remainder of the crew continued happily for months to years after (no timeframe given). It was only in a pirate battle that the entire crew was poisoned and were able to die with at least the single thought that their good friend would recieve their message, and with that they died in good spirits. Brook died, but CAME BACK TO LIFE. Yikes.-On the issue of solitary, the reason solitary is so horrifying is because there is nothing you can do. Prison and research solitary is so horrifying because you can't interact with anything, and you are often deprived of your senses, with only a tiny space to move about. Brook was still able to navigate, and while lonliness over years and years is an excruciating ordeal, could DO something, so no, it is not the same as solitary.
-I do concede however, Robin's past was slightly less tragic in this aspect. She was able to have brief moments of belonging at the least, before the government would hunt her again, but at the end of every story, she would be betrayed by everyone she knew again. And again. And again. From 8 years to 16 or 17 years old, the vast majority of her growing up consisted of betrayal left and right for money, for what reason?
-Brook on the other hand had nearly 40 years of fulfilling life, with friends, nakama, freedom. There was no given timeline about what happened when after Yorki died, so I can't really compare that well, but at worst, 50 years of life with the happy memories of years past to sustain him were had. I changed my mind. Robin's lone past of betrayals is worse than Brook's lone past well, alone.Come ON.
EDIT: Oh lord, I'm sorry my username cramps this up.
@Spore: Robin's childhood may be more understandable to the highschool/middleschool crowd, but the degrees are drastically different. Imagine you're in second grade. Now nobody talks to you, except to throw rocks or to yell at you or to scold you. You have no parents. The people you live with just use you to do menial work while they go out with their kid and leave you at home. Teen angst doesn't touch this. -
RE: When Do you expect of the New World?
Floating islands. Water displaced by some invisible force. Currents that go straight up.
Skypiea. Snake currents. Knock up stream.
The supernova are the "challengers" to the title of one piece. For them to be taken seriously, they need to do things like this.
You forget the supernovas are the rookies of the new world. Who knows who else is waiting there?
I'm also expecting a lot out of the yonkou. Considering they rule this place, I expect a change of dynamic. In the 1st half, the marines seem to have the most power. In the 2nd half, is that the same? It doesn't seem like it right now. The New World might be a world ruled by pirates. That will be something to see. It may be a place where even the admirals and smoker are challenged.
I'd love to see Smoker DO something finally.

RE: Next Crew Member Speculation (Ver 3.0)
@Nyssane: by that logic, Iva is a fucking lock.
-
RE: Next Crew Member Speculation (Ver 3.0)
@Drake:
Jinbei: Size is not really an issue in my opinion. Brook and Franky are both too tall for the doorways, but they manage, the anime will just magick him through most of the doorways. I hope :(Bentham: He was in Movie 8, in which they omitted the existence of Franky (who had been in the crew for a reasonable amount of time already). Franky's "AAOOO" and Benthams "DONT JOOOOKE AROUND" have that same nasal tone.
-
RE: Next Crew Member Speculation (Ver 3.0)
Could someone refresh me on the reasons we disqualified Jinbei? Or was it just because he's too damn powerful?
As of now I see possible candidates as
Hancock:
Broken power has been fixed in the past, see Robin, but Hancock is a bit much. Almost anyone is vulnerable to her attack, and plus she has political responsibility, like the one that restrained Vivi.Caimie: Rather weak, can barely move on land, would have to be in the ship mainly to be plausible. Also, no fighting ability, not even a weak one that could be developed later (see Nami).
Hachi: His history with Nami is easily excusable, but the fact that 2 swordsmen already exist, plus his second occupation is just Takoyaki makes Hacchi rather a weak candidate.
Rayleigh: No. You know what? Just no. Go away. Go die.
Jinbei: The main opposing argument is either overpowered, or is a shichibukai. Being a shichibukai in Jinbei's case really isn't much, it doesn't seem like he's in it for the prestige or anything. His power is rather alarming, if we're using bounty as an indication. I see him as a guide at best, though if he became a crewmember I would be totally stoked. The crew has no giant/ogre/brute. Franky is more based on his built in weapons, and strong hammer is like a finishing move. I'd like to see a fishman with a hand-to-hand style.
Bentham- As plenty have noticed, kazuki yao already voices Franky. The two voices next to each other would be easily noticable. Group outbursts would probably be the most obvious violation of this.
Inazuma- Didn't really think about it, but yeah, a possible new member. Seems odd to introduce him/her (weird jawline changing) and give him/her lines and then suddenly cut to Ivankov.

RE: Next Crew Member Speculation (Ver 3.0)
Sidenote: @Crossword: Holy shit, those cannons are huge. That, or Oda missed the scaling mark by quite a bit. If those are the right size, the cannonballs are easily as tall as someone's torso.
-
RE: Next Crew Member Speculation (Ver 3.0)
Seeing as how they're surrounded by Marine ships, I'd have to say Jinbei is a shoe-in to get them out. I don't see a "ESCAPE REALLY FAST" comin through this time.
-
RE: Next Crew Member Speculation (Ver 3.0)
@Croy: Jinbei disliked pirates though. Its not much of a stretch to assume then that outside of merman affairs such as keeping the island itself safe from other pirates and kidnappers, he'd be relatively distant from the age of pirates? Since he was there when Whitebeard declared protection over the island, it seems like he stayed there for a considerable amount of time.
@Zik: Understandable. I'd see Jinbei as a the weathered vet rather than the 'disconnected but cool outsider'. I'd see it like… derno, Tom joining the crew.
And concerning Hancock: Yeah, definitely will play a further part. She's been built up way too much at this point to toss away that easily.
-
RE: Next Crew Member Speculation (Ver 3.0)
Woof, that was a long thread. It seems like there are only two arguments that prevent Jinbei from joining:
- Former captain, too much pride to join under another captain.
- Overpowering, would match or surpass the monster trio.
And trust me, I read everything.
Even if he was a former captain, he has no crew to assemble as of now. Assuming he escapes ID alive, the only available fishman we know would be Hachi, and maybe the other Sun pirates. In the same way that he owes and respects Whitebeard, Jinbei probably would take to Luffy, and his defiance of the World Government, Tenryuubito, etc.
As for being overpowering, sure 250mil is quite up there. I have no end-all retort to this, except perhaps Jinbei might be a guide/vivi until the end of the fishman island arc, by which point enough time will have passed for updated bounties, bringing the monster trio into a bit below his range, and Luffy into some hideously overpriced range.
At first I thought it was ridiculous, but all the signs seem to point to Jinbei for now.
EDIT
In addition, for this to happen, the amount of time Fishman arc and all the stuff before it will take will have to be lengthy. The last time it took from Arabasta to Enies Lobby before there was an update.
arabasta/skypia/longring/water7/enies. But the update happened primarily because of enies. So now we have
Enies Lobby/Florian/Sabaody/Indiv Crew Stories (room for notorious actions?)/Impel Down/???/Return to Sabaody/Fishman
Seems like enough time, although Skypia and W7/Enies were both ridiculously long arcs, while we only have a kinda long Thriller Bark this time around. So?
-
RE: Next Crew Member Speculation (Ver 3.0)
Anyone else feel the crew needs strong hand to hand fighter? Franky feels more mechagimmicky. Jinbei would be a strong physical fighter, and Smoker would be awesome.
