In what sense is 2009 a hallmark year for One Piece?
2007 and 2008 were much better.
In what sense is 2009 a hallmark year for One Piece?

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is up on YouTube and Hulu now. With any luck, One Piece won't be far behind.
In all seriousness, it was probably something along the lines of "They are safe."
Apply the same principal to Gomu.
Its entirely possible if Oda had intended it to be "Rubber Rubber" he'd have written it in Hiragana like he writes "Gomuningen"
I find that doubtful assuming Gomu Gomu no Mi is written the same as Gomu Gomu no Pistol (and it might not be, I don't know). To my knowledge all of the Devil Fruits have been given explicitly Japanese names.
Not For Nakama, that's almost exclusively used in One Piece. Bleach scanlators tried it for a few chapters and stopped.
Lets say Hypthetically someone were to watch the FUNi dub up until now or read Viz' Manga, decide they like this series and then turn to scanlations and/or Fansubs to get them further. That's well past Episode 38 (Where K-F had their dumb "This word is Untranslatable, it means a bond stronger than family" message)
They would be lost.
I got into OP before I knew Japanese well enough to understand everything, and I was lost for several episode when I picked up K-F's fansubs in the middle of Arabasta.
I actually didn't read K-F's message during Episode 38 (didn't even know it was there until long after actually) and the sudden use of nakama only threw me for the first couple uses. When used in context its meaning became clear almost immediately and whether it was translated or not became a non-issue.
At least acknowledge that I'm right… Gomu is written in Katakana, it's the Japanese character set for ENGLISH words...
Ah ha! So what you're saying is that the way Gomu is written in the manga, it's treated as a word that's supposed to be foreign to the audiance, which for an English speaking audiance would be….. Gomu! Cause remember...
It's all about Matching the presentation the Japanese audience got.
Really though, I get what you're saying, but unless that suggests that Luffy
isn't actually saying "Gomu" and is instead saying "Gum-u" in the same way other English words get random vowel sounds tacked on to them when spoken by the Japanese, that's a pretty weak justification for using Gum Gum in subs. Oda uses plenty of English so if Gomu Gomu were meant to be Gum Gum, it probably would be.
Things like "Ossan" "Aniki" and "Nakama" have NO LOGIC WHATSOEVER!! These are words that are PERFECTLY Translatable, there's no reason not to translate them.
Playing devil's advocate though… these are all words that are easily understandable to anybody that watches fansubs, which means while they are perfectly translatable, they don't actually NEED to be translated. :)
Yes, but we aren't really arguing overall presentation right here as much as we're talking about Gomu Gomu vs. Gum Gum, and at the end of the Day this one is one of the BIGGEST articles from Toei's list.
Hence the "!@#$ING TOEI!" from my original post.
But honestly, I've seen these early episodes in Japanese so many times at this point that since they've come out, I've been watching these episodes exclusively in English. (and if I watched them now I'd do it with the subs off anyway) And I'm sure a lot of people are the same. It has nothing to do with Preferring Dubs Vs Subs, just a lot of us have seen the Japanese version enough that now the Dub is the fun thing to watch because even though these are old episodes, it's something "New" to watch.
Oh yeah. I'm the same. It only became really notable when they started putting subbed episodes online.
And honestly, about Gum Gum Vs Gomu Gomu. If you wana be really techincal about it
I've been working for the last 19 hours inbetween internet debates, so if you don't mind for today… no. I really don't.
:(
How cool that guy must have been. To be 51 years old and writing anime scripts.
What about Luffy saying "Gomu Gomu no Ono"? Should the Axe be left in Japanese too?
Undecided. I could go either way on that one.
It's all about Matching the presentation the Japanese audience got.
Which is an effort in futility. Like you said, they love their English over there so right away there's no way we're going to get the same experience from them.
In Japanese, Luffy's attacks are in a Language the viewer can understand. You're meant to know what "Gomu Gomu no Ono" Means, because the Japanese fan was meant to. Robin's attacks not so. She's just saying some random Spanish and French words, there are no on-screen informants to tell you what Robin is saying, that's the way it's meant to be.
Which makes the "trying to match the Japanese presentation" argument even more invalid. Have you looked at a roll of paper towels or a Hamburger Helper box lately? Spanish is almost as common in North America as English and French is far less foreign to us than the Japanese.
If they really wanted to "match the experience" they'd have to change all the French into Arabic and all the Spanish into Russian. Which would be silly, but hammers down the point that trying to make a sub that matches the Japanese presentation is a futile effort that is not worth persuing.
The show was made for a Japanese audience, it was presented for one, so you should be presented the show in the same way, and this is how it was presented to them:
Anything that's in Japanese - you're meant to understand and know what that means
Anything that's in English - You're meant to understand them to an extent (They love English over there, that's why they throw it into everything, including most of their music)
Anything that's In any OTHER Language - You aren't meant to understand these at all without looking them up. In the Original Raw Japanse, Notes are NOT present for these at all.
Oda throws the Japanese words into the manga, yes, but Toei didn't put any kind of On-Screen Attack information (A-la Yu Yu Hakusho) so you aren't meant to understand the French or Spanish words in the Anime.
But every gradeschooler can count in Spanish and 'flure' is a heck of a lot closer to flower than 'hana'.
We aren't a Japanese audiance and never will be one. An American audiance will NEVER get the same thing out of the show as the Japanese audiance anyway due to basic cultural differences.
It should be presented for what it is, a Japanese show being watched by Americans.
and I can HEAR Luffy saying "Kaizoku".
We all know by now Kaizoku means Pirate. Nobody complains about this.
It's the EXACT same situation, Exact.
It's not even close. Specific names are rarely treated the same as a general noun and the fact remains that it's inconsistent with the rest of the show's internal logic.
An example of the EXACT situation is the one you didn't respond to.
"For a sub it just doesn't make sense to hear Gomu Gomu no Pistol followed by Viente Flure and have captions that say Gum Gum Pistol followed by Viente Flure. It's off putting."
You don't like it because you've gotten used to "Gomu Gomu No" so you prefer it, that's all this is.
Give me a little more credit than that. I don't like it because it isn't consistent with the rest of the show.
Luffy's attacks are already bi-lingal. Translating only the Japanese parts of them doesn't make any sense in the first place, and it makes even less sense than that if you aren't translating anything else.
For a Dub, sure. Whatever. But for a sub it just doesn't make sense to hear Gomu Gomu no Pistol followed by Viente Flure and have captions that say Gum Gum Pistol followed by Viente Flure. It's off putting.
You want to talk about inconsistency. We have Zoro speaking Japanese in the dub and Luffy using an English adaptation in the sub.
Note: Funi themselves set this precedent with their Yu Yu Hakusho release. Translated attacks in the dub, untranslated in the sub. In fact, Yusuke's Spirit/Rei Gun is exactly the same situation as Luffy's Gum Gum/Gomu Gomu no Pistol.
Considering the REST of Luffy's attacks are English (The Gomu Gomu no Part is Japanese, but the second part of the attack is English 80% of the time) it makes sense to leave the whole thing in English.
That makes less sense.
Gum Gum works perfectly, and you can HEAR him saying Gomu Gomu no, so what's the problem?
That IS the problem. I can HEAR him saying Gomu Gomu no, so why am I reading Gum Gum?
And the Idea is to let the English speaking fans know what they're hearing means, makes perfect sense.
If that were true then there wouldn't be any untranslated attacks at all.
No, there was a reason. That reason was probably inconsistent, illogical, and idiotic, but everything has a reason.
It may be consistent in ways, but translating Sanji's attacks the first time around was just downright awkward. And I still hate the use of Gum Gum in the subs. It's completely idiotic to read Gum Gum XXXXX one second, and then an untranslated attack from another character the next. It makes no damn sense. !@#$ing Toei.
As for doing English the first time and untranslated every time after that… I'm okay with it, but it seems pretty pointless. So Zoro says Demon Slash in one episode and Oni Giri for the next 400+? Yeah. That'll make a difference. Totally worth the awkwardness of translating Sanji's and I assume Robin's attacks the first time around...
I should order from right stuff, but they're more expensive than elsewhere and I'd have to pay sales tax.
On the other hand, considering the state's financial state, maybe paying some extra sales tax wouldn't be such a bad idea.
What's with all this getting it early stuff? Everywhere I go I see the release date for June 30.
I order mine from DVD Pacific. http://www.dvdpacific.com/item.asp?ID=1094473
I'm just relaying what I heard. P.S. I'm a girl BTW
Well now we KNOW that this is fake.
Edit: If you hate the nakama being left untranslated, get ready to cry emo tears.
I'm normally weary of new sub groups, but that line convinced me to give you a shot. That and your post actually used coherent English, which is a plus for a fansubber.
I think It's a wry comment about how the Dragon Ball Z Dub was
"Sean Schemmel as Goku
Tiffany Voulmer as Bulma
Cynthia Cranz as Chichi
and Christopher Sabat as EVERYONE ELSE"They don't do this with One Piece though, so your guess is as good as mine as to why he thought it was relevant.
It has nothing to do with the DBZ dub and everything to do with Chris Sabot being Funi's go to guy for damn near everything. He's not just in a lot of shows, but voices over a lot of their promos too.
It's a safe bet that they said "Let's have Chris do the trailer," instead of "Let's have Zoro do the trailer."
Wow, that was pretty good. It was kind of weird to hear Zoro doing the preview for the next set. If Season 2 is going to be very long, then maybe they will do a different Strawhat for each one.
I'm guessing they did it because they have Chris Sabot chained up in their basement so he can voice everything.
@ThegreatPirateKing:
TrTG-Bo8-xE
Major thanks to MugiwaraMikey for getting this for me.
One Piece Ending 03 - You've Got Me (FUNimation English Dub) (320Kbps, 48KHz, 2 channel Stereo) - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=SU1AW7K4
Ugh… I'm sorry, but that was terrible.
Not really. All it really shows is that Toei is capable of using copy/paste.
Do you think Funi really wants all those people illegally watching their streams and eating up bandwidth, causing the people trying to watch it legally to bitch about lag and even possibly turn to fansubs because of it?
YES!
Funi doesn't care WHERE the hits come from on their site. They are NOT LEGALLY ALLOWED TO MARKET ONE PIECE OUTSIDE OF NORTH AMERICA. That's why they don't allow it. They are legally obligated to limit it to North America.
And really, to be honest, Funi probably doesn't give a !@#$ one way or the other about One Piece fans outside of North America. They certainly aren't making business decisions based around what the British One Piece Society thinks.
I don't think you guys are seeing the simulcast stream from the correct angle.
The simulcast isn't intended to get rid of fansubs, that's what C&D Orders are for. The simulcast is nothing more than Funi and Toei realizing that there is a market here and finally having the technology to do something with it.
Why do you think Viz started this with Naruto? They saw DB getting 500K to 1 mil downloads every week and said "I want a piece of that action!"
This isn't about killing fansubs. Fansubs are what made this possibile to begin with. This is about taking advantage of the market that those fansubs have created.
It's not Funi's decision to make, it's Toei's. Toei is a very large company. It probably takes three staff meetings to decide which brand of toilet paper to use. Working out this flustercluck between them and Funi means getting all the right people talking to each other in exactly the right order, and these people are on opposite sides of the globe and speak different languages.
And that's before you bring the lawyers into it…
How you can call his points "idiotic", yet completely ignore that horrible exaggerated list (although if it's meant to be exaggerated, disregard this) is beyond me.
A couple reasons.
1. Because only one was serious.
2. Because using examples of 4Kids not editing something as a precedent in discussion of a show that was extremely edited without rhyme or reason is foolish at best. If 4Kids editing standards were as the counterpoint list suggests, 4Kids' One Piece wouldn't be nearly as panned as it is. That in itself is proof enough that the points are stupid. They are in direct conflict with reality.
It's a logical guess.
There's nothing inherently special about episode 403. 403 was the episode they started with because that was the episode that was going to air at the time they were able to set this up.
If they do get permission to start the streaming again, they will start at whatever the current episode is.
If they do upload the older episodes, it will begin at 391? like it did the first time and go from there. If 403 goes up, it will go up after 402 and 401.
I wouldn't hold your breath. That's going to be a LOOONG wait.
I wouldn't wait. If they do decide to start back with the stream, they aren't going to start with 403.
If they were going to put an episode up they would have told us.
Not really, no. Only those who overexaggerate the edits of 4Kids would believe that.
Most of those examples you gave are horribly idiotic. Not only are you using shows with different editing standards for most of your examples, but sometimes you aren't even comparing similar examples.
Team Rocket "blasting off again" does not equal Usopp being beaten unconscious and requiring medical treatment. And yeah, 4Kids did once cut a whole episode of Pokemon because the Safari Park Warden pointed a shotgun at the kids.
Poverty, Being basement-dwellers, and Faggotry. HorribleSubs, the Kings of the Jackasses attained this and everything else the internet had to offer, and their Dying words drove countless souls to throw shit at them.
"You want Anime? You can have it! because We hate American Companies for absolutely no reason, so we're complete dicks, kthxbi"
These words lured anime fans to FUNimation.com in Pursuit of their Legal streaming Anime being returned to them.
This is the time of the Great Simulcast Era!
Demon Rin will be the Queen of the Streamers!
And Once again, nobody mentions the DVDs…
They don't mention it because there's nothing to mention.
@Funimation:
ANN: You know who leaked One Piece; how far are you willing to take this matter legally?
The preempting of this content is not only an invasion but a violation of law and it is a matter we take seriously. We have identified the person(s) who we believe is responsible for the downloading and subsequent distribution of this episode. Regardless of the means by which they gained access to the files, the person(s) responsible understood that they were stealing the file and that it was wrong to do so. We do intend to pursue legal action.
Ownage in the name of justice!
You mean FUNi isn't losing the license?! Oh boy, I don't have to hang myself now!
Whoa whoa whoa. Let's not be too hasty now…
Cripes people, the One Piece license is not, has not, and will not be at risk because of this. There has been nothing to suggest that and nobody in authority has even hinted that it's a possibility.
The sky is not falling just because nobody says it isn't.
Considering this is something that could easily be done from the home, "working Saturday" is no excuse.
It's pretty neat, actually. I listen to the press briefings on my laptop on my way to work.
There really isn't enough facepalm in the world for this.
GS is back!
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!
I thank you and your icon for delivering this wonderful news to me in this time of woe.
Cripes. Looks like they changed the FMA video so instead of loading like a YouTube video it streams on-demand. Better for security sure, but that also makes it virtually unwatchable for anybody not running really high speed internet unle… ss t...hey want th... e video... to... skip and... skip.
Dear Funi, simulcast streams that you can't play aren't much better than not having them at all.
Maybe if I ignore you you'll go away :D
don't like fansub, don't watch it.
What are you talking about? I love your fansub. It's hilarious.
Well I could have used the line you subbed right after that one… but you didn't have one!
The what on the what?
A week ago the biggest complaint that could be found was Zoro not being in his candle statue pose on the S2V2 cover. It'd be nice if that were the most pressing issue again.
Man, can you imagine what it must have been like for the 4Kids editing department as One Piece kept going. They can't have known what they were getting into.
Can you imagine what it would have been like for them had they kept the license…
Skypiea: God? The main villain of this arc is God? Come on, give me a break! Oh great, he's even smiting people!
G8: That's... a lot of guns. Put on the coffee, Bob. We're going to be here all night.
Davy Back Fight: What do you mean we have to edit the afro! Political Correctness? Bob! Get the book! See if we can have Afros! What! Are you kidding me!
Water 7: I hear they're introducing a new crew member in this arc. Oh, please god. Let it be Paulie. He uses rope and he's a total prude. God please let it be him. What? Franky? Bob, which one is Franky..... what..... WHAT!
Ennis Lobby: Listen boss, I'm only going to say this once. Either you hire us some part time help to edit all of these guns, or I'm coming down here tomorrow with a "water gun" and I'm going to make some "edits" to your face!
Franky Joins the crew: .................... we can't show this episode. Ever. In fact... I'm not even sure if we should have this in the building.
Thriller Bark: That's it. I !@#$ing quit! Mad scientist making zombie creatures, people burning alive in the daylight, a skeleton, and an goddamn sexual assault! !@#$ this! I'm out of here! What the hell were you people thinking when you bought this show!
I miss the days when when the biggest thing we had to worry about was the clip art on the season sets… you know.... last week.
Considering the 'security' they had before, "added security" could mean pretty much anything.
It is disconcerting, though not unexpected, that the removal of FMA is only temporary. It's pretty clear FMA only went down because with this 403 disaster everybody and their dog knows how to break Funi's "security". They always could do it, but now that somebody's actually done it the threat is real instead of potential.
