This is a long shot, but does anyone have "Dead Joe (2nd version)" by the Birthday Party?

RE: What book are you reading now?
I'm currently reading Meat is Murder by Joe Pernice (33 1/3 vol. 5)
I also just finished Our Band Could Be Your Life by Michael Azerrad.

RE: Western Comics thread
^Planetary is great. Hopefully Ellis will finish the final issue soon.
Also thanks to everyone who gave me advice on what to buy.

RE: Western Comics thread
I know I ask this at least once a page, but is anyone else reading All-Star Superman? The recent issue portrays the Bizarros in a different and interesting manner. Grant Morrison really has brought a lot of great ideas to the book.
I need some recommendations for new reading material. What does everyone think of:
- Annihilation
- Beyond!
- Blue Beetle
- Jack of Fables

RE: Western Comics thread
You'd think that with how popular Geoff Johns is at DC, that they'd reprint his work on the Flash considering that it was one his first big series that he did for the company.

RE: Western Comics thread
I feel bad for hating Liefeld's work, he seems like a cool guy. But he practically asks for it.
Don't be. If it's not his terrible artwork, it's his method of screwing over artists who worked for him and his publishing companies that make him despicable.
For the record, Spider-Man: Reign sounds like it'll be so bad it's awesome.

RE: Western Comics thread
@Cap'n:
And here's something funny I randomly found on Google:
Oh Liefield
Looking at Liefeld's artwork just makes me want to punch Robert Kirkman in the face for claiming that Rob Liefeld is a modern day Jack Kirby.
I wonder who's worse, Rob Liefeld or Greg Land.

RE: SNK vs. Capcom Card Fighters DS
Back when the Neo-Geo Pocket Color was still around, I heard nothing but positive things about the original from my NGPC-owning friends.
I am definitely interested in getting this (along with a DS) but I'll wait until they fix the glitch.

RE: School of Rock 2
My favorite part of School of Rock?
! The fact that not only does Jack Black's band lose, it loses to the band that kicked him out in the first place. Awesome.
I actually thought that School of Rock was a good movie, despite my disliking of Jack Black and Sarah Silverman. Good not great. The sequel should live up to these standards but probably won't.

RE: Western Comics thread
Who is that?
That's the first Iron Man armor that Tony Stark ever developed.
I wonder how they're going to handle Iron Man's origin. Ellis came up with a new origin but I haven't read Extremis yet, and they're definitely not going to use the Vietnam War.

RE: Western Comics thread
Actually, I only found out about Usagi Yojimbo when I was a kid because of the Ninja Turtles toys.
It was a pretty smart move by Stan Sakai to let his character crossover like that, because tons of people found out about him through the turtles.
But other than some crossover stuff, it's not related at all.
Yeah, other than both animated series and some anthology stories, the Ninja Turtles and Usagi really haven't crossed over that much. As an aside, Stan Sakai really did a great job using the Turtles in the Shades of Green storyline.
BTW, Anyone interested in getting into Usagi Yojimbo should start with The Brink of Life and Death. Usagi was moving from Mirage to Dark Horse, and this volume collects the early Dark Horse stories and is very accessible (though pretty much every Usagi trade is accessible.)

Dr Strangelove:
Dr. Strangelove: Sir! I have a plan. Heh. [He realizes he is standing up] Mein Führer! I can walk! Colonel "Bat" Guano: That's private property…OK, I'm gonna get your money for you. But if you don't get the President of the United States on that phone, you know what's gonna happen to you?...You're gonna have to answer to the Coca-Cola Company.
General Jack D. Ripper: A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual, and certainly without any choice. That's the way your hard-core Commie works. I first became aware of it, Mandrake, during the physical act of love…Yes, a profound sense of fatigue, a feeling of emptiness followed. Luckily I-I was able to interpret these feelings correctly. Loss of essence. I can assure you it has not recurred, Mandrake. Women, er, women sense my power, and they seek the life essence. I do not avoid women, Mandrake...but I do deny them my essence.

RE: Western Comics thread
Jimmy Corrigan is an amazing yet depressing story. I'm still trying to get into Chris Ware's other work to no avail. (I wasn't too fond of Quimby the Mouse)
I'm not up to date on the storylines, but is anyone else reading Usagi Yojimbo? It's a pretty damn good series.

RE: Western Comics thread
@Cap'n:
I thumbed through the latest She Hulk, and…. god, I swear that series is the dumbest on stands today. The dialogue is so cheesy and terrible, and every issue is about She Hulk trying to get into the pants of different superhero.
Of course in this issue she slept with Stark.. ugh.
"How do you get away with sleeping around? Everyone calls me a skank, but you get called a player. Isn't that a double standard?"
I mean JESUS who writes this shit?
Really? I haven't read SHe-Hulk in a while, but it was pretty enjoyable. Though the sleeping with Stark thing does sound pretty lame.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail:
! Arthur and the Knights arrive at a castle.] King Arthur: Hello? [long silence] Hello! [A guard appears. He speaks with a French accent.] Frenchman: 'Allo! Whoo ez eet? King Arthur: It is King Arthur, and these are my Knights of the Round Table. Whose castle is this? Frenchman: Zis is the castle of my master, Guy de Loembard. King Arthur: Go and tell your master that we have been charged by God with a sacred quest. If he will give us food and shelter for this night, he can join us in our Quest for the Holy Grail. Frenchman: Well, I'll ask him, but I don't zink he'll be very keen… Uh, he's already got one, you see.
King Arthur: What? Sir Galahad: He says they've already got one!
King Arthur: Are you sure he's got one? Frenchman: Oh, yes, it's very nice-a. [[I]to other Frenchmen] I told him we already got one. [[I]they snicker in a very French manner] King Arthur: Well, uh… Can we come up and have a look?
Frenchman: Of course not! You are English types. King Arthur: Well, what are you then? Frenchman: I'm French! Why do you zink I have zis outrageous accent, you silly king?! Sir Galahad: What are you doing in England?
Frenchman: Mind your own business! King Arthur: [sternly] If you do not show us the Grail, we shall take your castle by force!Frenchman: You don't frighten us, English pig-dogs! Go and boil your bottoms, sons of a silly person! I blow my nose at you, so-called Ah-thoor Keeng, you and all your silly English K-nnnnnnnniggits! [makes taunting gestures at them] Sir Galahad: What a strange person. King Arthur: Now look here, my good man — Frenchman: I don't want to talk to you no more, you empty-headed animal food trough wiper! I fart in your general direction! Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries![pause] Sir Galahad: Is there someone else up there we could talk to? Frenchman: A-no! Now go away or I shall taunt you a second time-a![slight pause] King Arthur: Now this is your last chance. I've been more than reasonable… Frenchman: [speaks in French to another Frenchman] Fetchez la vache. 2nd Frenchman: Quoi? Frenchman: Fetchez la vache![Yet another Frenchman is seen preparing a cow for something. Arthur is still speaking outside.] King Arthur: If you do not agree with my commands, then I shall —[The cow whizzes through the air with a loud BOING!] King Arthur: JESUS CHRIST![The cow squashes one of the "horses".] King Arthur: Right! [draws sword] CHARGE!!![The Knights charge at the French castle. The French drop more animals on them, and a battle begins.] Frenchman: Yeah, this one is for your mother! There you go! And this one's for your dad![The Knights quickly lose courage.] King Arthur: Run away!
Knights: Run away! Run away!…[Arthur and the Knights retreat and hide behind a ridge of land near the woods. The French jeer after them.]This is Spinal Tap:
! Nigel Tufnel plays the piano) Marty DiBergi: It's pretty. Nigel Tufnel: Yeah, I like it. I've been fooling around with it for a few months now. Very delicate. Marty DiBergi: It's a bit of a departure from what you normally play. Nigel Tufnel: Yeah, well, it's part of a trilogy, a musical trilogy that I'm doing in D [pause] minor, which, I always find is really the saddest of all keys, really, I don't know why; it makes people weep instantly to play (Nigel plays, and sings) Nigel Tufnel: It's a horn part. Marty DiBergi: It's very pretty. Nigel Tufnel: You know, just simple lines intertwining, you know, very much like - I'm really influenced by Mozart and Bach, and it's sort of in between those, really. It's like a Mach piece, really. It's sort of… Marty DiBergi: What do you call this? Nigel Tufnel: Well, this piece is called "Lick My Love Pump".
Office Space:
Peter Gibbons: Lumbergh's gonna have me work on Saturday. I can tell already. I'm gonna end up doin' it, because, uh… because I'm a big pussy... which is why I work at Initech to begin with. -

@shining:
Thats the one written by John Cleese
I love that one
John Cleese didn't write it, he just came up with the concept. If you're interested in Elseworlds Superman stories then you should check out Superman: Red Son.

RE: Western Comics thread
!
Between this image and Seven Soldiers of Victory, I would like to say I love you, Grant Morrison.
-
RE: Western Comics thread
You might want to change the title of the thread back to American comics.
Anyway, I've been re-reading Y:the Last Man and its some good stuff. Also, if you're a Superman fan and you're not reading All-Star Superman, then you better start doing so.

RE: Worst Game
I'd have to say the ECW games (at least the Playstation versions).
-
RE: Fav. Comic covers
Whoah, didn't know there was an old topic about this.
Eh, it was an old topic and nobody read it. Its no big deal, I just wanted to include to be complete.
Anyway, I like that Animal Man cover too. I like most of Bolland's covers.
Bolland is amazing. I'm going to try to get into Judge Dredd just so I can see some of his art. Same thing with Batman: The Killing Joke.
Other good covers (the image combines both):

The Boys has been cancelled. It's a shame, because from what I heard it sounded like a fun book. I'm sure Ennis will bring it to Image or some other company and it'll be back.

RE: The Funniest Face faults in Other Anime/Manga
I'm gonna have to say that Konjiki no Gash has some of the funniest reactions and there's so many to choose from.

RE: Western Comics thread
Here's a few of his quotes from letter columns (and between comic characters):
http://www.rilstone.talktalk.net/sim4.htm
I have a few issues of Cerebus, but not many.
Wow. Oh…wow. I knew about the anti-feminism, homophobia, and the pro-woman beating but Jews bringing the Holocaust upon themeselves? Wow. I'm still torn over who's worse though: Dave Sim or John Byrne.
Cerebus….. is an experience. I was on board for a serious chunk of the ride and some of it I loved and some if it I hated. I was so relieved when it was finally over. All I can really say is good luck.
To be honest, I only plan on reading up ro the second volume, High Society. All my "elite" comics-reading friends have nagged me to read it and apparently its near-legendary. Unfortunately for my free time, social life, and wallet, I'm a completist so I may be in for the long haul.

RE: Where the FUCK are all the DS Lites!?
@Private:
Funnily enough, that was a typo. I live in Maryland.
WHERE CAN I FIND THIS POOL?!!?
Up in New York there are a shitload of them.

RE: Western Comics thread
@Pass:
So…............. Marvel Zombies/Army of Darkness crossover.. Yeah.....
Arthur Suydam misspelled "dessert" on the promo cover.
I just now started Cerebus and Sandman which are two huge series (though I've read the second volume of Sandman and Endless Nights prior to the first volume). Both volumes were great, but I wonder which volume of Cerebus will start showing the blatant misogyny that Dave Sim has become famous for.

RE: Bone
I first read Bone back when the first couple of issues were published in Disney Adventures over 10 years ago. It's an excellent, epic story.
You can probably get the One Volume for around 30 bucks on Amazon.
-
RE: Grim Tales from Grim and Mandy Anime Doujinshi
I concur with the Dude.
If my memory holds up, this is the series that established that Mandy was behind September 11. I didn't have a problem with the idea, but the execution wasn't that good.
EDIT: I am an idiot.
-
RE: Which came first?
Didn't Osamu Tezuka, the father of all manga, copy his style (big eyes) from Disney? I could be totally wrong on this though.
He was influenced by Disney and the Max Fleischer Superman cartoons.
Yhea…
European chariacture and political comics...
To American Newspaper Comics (Little Nemo, The Yellow Kid, Krazy Kat)
European Comic comics that are like comics we think of today(Tintin motherfuckers)
American comic comics (Superman, Action Comics)
Japanese comic comics (Tezuka stuff)
American comics take a hit in the crotch(Comics Code)
Mature japanese comics(Gegika)
American Graphic Novels(Will Eisner)
80's and early 90's boom in mature landmark comics in both japan and America(Whatchmen,Akira,Ghost in The Shell,Sandman,Dark knight Returns, Nausicaa)Damn, I was just about to post something like this. You pretty much hit the nail on the head, but I'd mention the "Comix" movement of the late 60s and early 70s and the independent movement that was evident in the 80s.

RE: Mp3 Request Thread
I do have that song, and I can get most of the other ones if someone could teach me how to put links to download songs from on here. (I'm used to html, so I'm not sure how to do this kind of stuff on forums) :ninja:
I do have the uploaded link, though.
http://h1.ripway.com/NuitFleur/[MatthewJay]-LetYourShoulderFall.mp3I couldn't find this anywhere. Thanks a lot!

RE: Western Comics thread
From what I've heard, Squadron Supreme is going to go on hiatus for awhile. Which is kind of…not good, but it'll give me time to jump into the series.
-
RE: Frank Zappa
By the way, the Mothers of Invention's cover of Stairway to Heaven is pretty damn good.
-
RE: Frank Zappa
I love Frank Zappa, especially his work with the Mothers of Invention. We're Only in it For the Money is one of my favorite albums.
-
RE: Venture Brothers
This season really did not disappoint. I loved what I saw, particularly the Scooby-Doo parody and the "guest appearance" by David Bowie.

RE: Western Comics thread
@The:
I want Brock back. I hate Vemon III.
Speaking of, I bought What If: The Other the other day. Interesting read. Peter chooses not to receive his new Spidey powers and the symbiote ditch's Scorpy and sneaks in Petey's cocoon, turning him into "Poison", an evil symbiotic Peter Parker. The end is pretty morose.
Heh. That reminds me of another What If? a couple of years back that was about Secret War never ending. Spider-Man has the symbiote costume and its bonded with him to the point that he uses "we" and "us" to refer to himself, much like Venom does. Some point during the story Spider-Man gets hit with a sonic blast and
! reveals that the symbiote is manipulating Peter Parker's bones
Which surprised the hell out of me the first time I read it.

RE: Western Comics thread

This site allows you to download Golden Age comics that have fallen into the public domain as cbr files. I personally recommend Captain Marvel (if you can get past the blatant racism) and Plastic Man.

RE: Organisations and groups in mangas and animes
Kinnikuman: Seigi Chojins, Akuma Chojins (Seven Devils, Akuma Knights, etc), Zangyaku Chojins, Perfect Chojins.
Kinnikuman Nisei/Ultimate Muscle: dMp, No Respect
(I'm not counting the tag-teams)
Berserk: The Hawks, God Hands (maybe), Gutts' group
Rurouni Kenshin: 10 Swords
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Dio's gang, Jotaro's gang, Josuke's gang, Giorno's gang, The mafia.
GTO: The Angels (I think that's their name)
I'm bad with names. Sorry.
-
RE: Highschool of the Dead
I read the first chapter and a half. It seems pretty good so I'll finish reading tonight.
-
RE: Spiderman 3
I just saw a couple of clips from the extended trailer and I am psyched. Though I hope the idea that Sandman is Uncle Ben's killer gets disproven in the actual film because it messes with the reason why Peter Parker takes up being a hero.
That and the new Green Goblin looks like he came out of a Mountain Dew commercial. Otherwise the movie looks great. I can't wait.
-
RE: Vagabond
I read this through scans for a while but it dropped off my radar. I need to pick it up the hard copies if just for the art.
-
RE: Any alternate reality mangas?
If you mean stuff like What If? or Elseworlds-type stuff, then I'll have to second Carter with Steel Ball Run (alternate reality version of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure) Otherwise, I can't think of anything.

RE: Western Comics thread
@Pass:
Sorry for the double post, but as a Deadpool fan….
Just to let you know,
! Deadpool "guest stars" in the Superman/Batman Annual
Also, Marvel Zombies was a nice, fun read.

RE: Western Comics thread
@Pass:
This caught my eye.
Its great for finding comics that are out of print or are not likely to be reprinted anytime soon. I have the complete Miracleman and Zenith in that format.
On an unrelated topic for those who haven't heard it by now, Nextwave as an ongoing series will end with issue 12.
