I don't see anything wrong with adding a little romance to the story…note I said A LITTLE. Nothing more complex than the thing with Bulma and Yamcha (i mean, a love story for the ages it ain't.)
That said, if you want romance deeply intertwined with a shonen manga, go read some Rumiko Takahashi.
