Has anyone purchased this game? What is your initial response?
I heard this game is pretty much up there in the charts, and it's got great reviews almost everywhere. What do you think?

The commercial looks awesome….that's all I know lol
GI gave it straight 10's.
It looks interesting, I should check it out.
Have to say, I'm curious about this one; I'm big into Greek mythology, so I'm curious to see what they did with it in this. Plus I like games like this, so it's like gravy. I'd be interested to see what people in here think of it.

Yeah, GS gave it five stars and said that it's a game for all gamers… Or something.
I think I'll go get it today. Or tomorrow.
Ok, sometime this week.
I'm thinking about buying it, I'm a huge fan of greek mythological stuff. But I heard it was really REALLY gorey (you actually have to chop Medusa's head off?), and that paired up with gratuitous shots of women's breasts just makes me cringe.
We'll see what happens when I get to a store (hehe, I have no self control when it comes to shopping).
i heard its REALLY violent and theres acutally lots of nudity in it, too
I was going to rent this until I got sick and started sleeping 20 hours a day.
From what I hear it is indeed ultraviolent and for some reason (I've yet to see an explanation) breasts abound. Normally ultraviolence and utterly gratuitous nudity in a game make me sigh and shake my head but once people start playing it they don't talk about any of that any more and talk about the easy, intuitive controls excellent gameplay and stunning graphics. And suddenly I'm interested again. If I manage to get past wanting to sleep all day I'll try and grab it.
The main character looks like an insane, Greek version of Powder.
Found this on gamespot….
Wow, the buzz for this game is off the chain. We're only a few months into the new year, and we've already got two serious contenders for the game of the year.
Woah, you can chop off a medusa's head and use her eyes to turn enemies to stone and shit.
Woah! I think the Castlevania series could learn a thing or two from God of War.
(Well, the 3D console versions)
How's the playing style? Devil May Cry-ish?

I think. More like DMC 3 in that its more in-depth. for example, your can get many new weapons in addition to your normal weapons, and learn new moves for all of them, like in DMC 3. Go to gamespot to read the article. I really want to get it.

So I hear.
Those chained blades look friggin' awesome…
Well nudity doesn't really bother me and gratuitous nudity just makes me roll my eyes and wait 'til it's over. Gore in videogames doesn't really bother me that much when it's people I'm hacking up. If I have to kill animals, then things get iffy (that's a large problem I had with the first Tomb Raider game), but people don't bug me that much. I'd still be interested to play it.

So… Snake Eater is out of the question, Bevin?!
If it's a monster I won't mind hacking it up, I just don't want to be shooting dogs or anything like that.

Broke down and bought it (found a used copy already! w00t! Cheapness!).
Ummm… wow.
So, uh, SPOILER WARNING**
Ok, maybe not major spoilers, but spoilers all the same.
Anyway, first impression: I saw it playing in the store and was impressed. Just to look at its amazing that its a ps2 game and not xbox. It looks awesome.
The game opens in the Agaean sea where you have to fight some generic undeadies on smashed up ships dealing with the occasional hydra head for good measure until you eventually reach the boss, a pair of hydra heads that annoy you for a while before you have to deal with the big hydra head (which heals the two lesser heads until you sopt the key to killing them). It played fun all the way to the boss. The boss battle took a while, not sure how long. Its funny, the big hydra head (the real boss) was much easier to deal with than the two lesser heads. The two lesser heads nearly killed me but I finished the big one with full health.
There is a thing where sometimes it will show you a button over an enemy (happens in all the boss and sub-boss fights so far). You hit that button and then either hit specific buttons which appear on screen or move the analog stick in certain patterns and you get off bigger badder moves (often finishing an enemy) and get more life of magic or red stuff (Gems? I forget). So far only one of them was painfully frustrating (Medusa) and most of them have been pretty doable.
The sub-boss and boss fights have been fun and challenging (Medusa, who looks badass by the way, was a lot more challenging that she was fun) and always feature some impressive graphics. Medusa was extra hard because you get another pain in the ass batch of critters right after you kill her and get her head (which is fun to use).
Can't vouch for the Mythological accuracy. I had my love of it crushed out of me in school. So far there isn't much to vouch for. Ares is being an ass and having armies of critters he somehow got out of the Underworld (don't know how he managed that yet) attack Athens. Zeus has forbid direct war between the Gods so Athena charges your character with the grand task of deicide. That's right, the goal of the game is to kill Ares. Sounds easy. The immediate issues I have are with the presence of the hydra in the sea (he doesn't belong there does he?), the multitude of minotaurs (I thought there was just the one Minotaur), and killing Medusa (umm… didn't she die once already - or is that later? Either way, we have multiple Medusa slayers running around. I can accept that Hera might not have wanted her to stay dead, having cursed her and all, and brought her back.). I thought that there was another gripe, but its not coming to mind right now.
Anyway, in an interview HERE the director of the game talks about his approach to research and putting things together. He wanted fun and cool, not accurate. He wanted a mythological feel, which the game delivers. I'm sure somebody obsessive will start a Wiki regarding its mythological shortcomings so I'll just ignore it all and enjoy the ride.
Oh, and all the talk about blood and ultra-violence and breasts? So far its super-bloody, super-ultra-violent and I think the breast count is hovering around 10 (including Medusa and ignoring some annoying things that flew around really fast and were probably harpies and completely ignored by me as I did the button mashing bit). I'd say the breasts weren't necessary for the story, but they fit where used. It wasn't like you'd walk in a random room and there would be a horde of naked women just haning out (yes I am aware of the terrible pun). After playing about 2 1/2 hours (I hear you can expect 12 hours from it which means it will take me at least 20 - I suck at twitch games) I can say that its very fun, very gory, very violent, and very definitely not for kids. I will probably try it again on one of the harder difficulties (there is easy, normal, hard and God I think - I am doing normal right now) when I finish the first trip through.
My plan right now is to polish off all of my work that is due by month-end tomorrow and take Thursday off so I can finish kicking this damn cold (gonna be a nice lazy day: a little reading, finally watch The Incredibles dvd, play some God of War and just plain take it easy) and will hopefully have it finished by sometime Friday at which point I will share my closing thoughts and probably write a real review to post up on my website (Content at last! Not just funny news and my stupid dreams!).
Bloody good fun.
God of War…
Possibly the bloodest game I have ever played...
Also, possibly the greatest fun I've ever had!
The combos are endless, the various ways to kill a mythical creature astound, the number of different gameplay elements in itself...
There's even a sequel in production already!
I have already beaten the game, and I must say, it is quite satisfying...
The only thing really wrong is that it seemed too short. It'll probably take you a good 9 hours, but that might all be completed in a weekend's time because you just can't put down the game and wait until later to play it.
All in all, God of War deserves the 10 out of 10...
It's definitely not for the weak of heart or those who faint at the sight of blood...because you'll be fainting every 3 seconds...
Just got it.
Imagine a version of DMC where you can rip off an enemy's arm and beat them to death with it.
Somehow, I think MB might like it. o.o
I rented it on Friday and beat it on Sunday. A FANTASTIC game. I don't watch TV much so I wasn't expecting it and knew nothing about it till I started seeing near perfect online reviews. I decided to give it a shot. The first portion of the first level had me rolling my eyes with boredom but as I progressed stuff kept getting cooler and cooler, culminating in the first boss battle which is a legendary video game experience.
Almost even above the bosses, the game's levels shine as a very enjoyable part of the experience. The levels not only look quite good, but the design, puzzles and feel of running through the areas gives the player a huge sense of immersion and success. The level design in the second large segment of the game is just cool as hell progressing through the rings of…well you'll see. The high point of the game was without doubt the first boss battle though. Not that the entire game is bad, but the first boss battle is just so testicle-numbingly fantastic that everything else, no matter how good it is, pales in comparison.
I guess my other complaint would be the balance of boss battles. Three. One of them in the first section of the game, then one MUCH MUCH later and of course the end. Hopefully they'll be able to fix that for the sequel!
I was very surprised. AMAZING game.
Sweet!! I'm renting it this weekend, it sounds like a kick!

I actually bought it the day after I posted, and I forgot that I started this thread (oopsies!). Anyway, this game has no mercy!
ok this weekend im SOOOOOOOOOOOOO renting this
Just got the game, playing it tomorrow
It's a good game and all but the only thing I don't like is:
1.Nudity
and
2.The game way too short
Another then that, it's a great game and like Magax The Great said it's not for the weak of heart and this game definately is the bloodiest I've ever seen so far…..
Too short? Really? How long did it take you to beat on God Mode?
i dont get why theres nudity…. is it like excessive or just like here and there?
