Just found this in my 1950 edition of Funk & Wagnalls New College Standard Dictionary:
Luff : (noun) 1.The act of sailing a ship into the wind. 2. The rounded part of a vessel's bow. 3. The foremost edge of a fore-and-aft sail. –verb. To sail into the wind. Also spelled loof. [ <d.[i] loef,="" loeven]<br="">It certainly is consistent with the spelling and pronunciation, if one uses the common practice of adding -y to a noun to form an adjective. Moreover, it could be said that Luffy is always sailing into the wind: the wind of adventure! But that sounds too corny..
