Based on a "novel" by the same name, this is a "slice of life" show that's taking people by the britches and swinging them around sporadically…but DO NOT watch the first episode first, as one will start to hate this series witha VENGEANCE. The second episode puts everything into perspective...well, go ahead and watch the first. I really do not care.

I just saw the first 3 episodes the other day. I think the 1st episode is down to a matter of preferance. I thought it was quite funny in how it was done.
Episode's 2 and 3 were great, especially 3 which was pretty funny.
Looks like it's a great series. Can't wait to see the rest.

Anybody else watching this? I've been wacthing for a few months and absolutely love it! It's too bad there are only a few episodes left.
I don't want to ruin it for anyone, but I just love the idea behind Suzumiya's character and how she is the only one in the dark about everything that's happening around her. Of course, Kyon's dry humor in his narration of the story always cracks me up too.
The random episode ordering is definatly… random, but I kind of like the way it's done; it fits with the mood of the show in an odd way. I can't wait to see how they decide to finish this, but I really don't want it to end. Maybe with some luck there will be an OVA in the future.

Isn't the novel series still running? If so, I don't think you have to be worried about it ending there… it obviously has a huge following, so if there's more material I'm sure you'll see it animated.
i also think there'll be more in the future. But right now i want Kyoto to make more FMP stuff 
ep 12, with haruhi singing was simply brilliant. i think this series has a quality on the animation which is simply amazing and haruhi is very cute.

Well, it just took me one episode for me too get me completely hooked to this great anime series. And yeah igalsfy, the story is a bit unlogical, but its still a good series.
And Haruhi is just one amusing and cute character.

Yes, this has been a wonderful series. Probably the highlight of the year for me so far, considering the piss-poor God awful Naruto fillers amongst other things.
Episode 12 was just awesomeness because of Haruhi singing. 2 great songs.
I'm sure hoping there will be a second series of this. It'd be a crime against humanity if they didn't give us another series.
I also hope there is more to the series, maybe another set of 14 episodes would be nice. TOO many short series this season.
Well one season is 13 eps so it's completely normal. It's just that most popular anime is 2 seasons long and then everyone expects so much or more.
Heh, didn't realize there was a thread for this series. Quite an awesome show and its consistency is quite admirable. It's shame that it's coming to an end. More episodes WOULD be nice, but since Kyoto Animation is a small studio and they're focusing their resources on a remake of Kanon now, I guess it's better that they just end it for now on the supposed climax that episode 14 will bring.

Actually, about 80% of the people here only watch mainstream shows. Stuff like Haruhi get overlooked.

it is, in the anime community. but the global mainstream that Terek is talking about might be watching mostly shonen.

Right. AP is big on OP, Naruto, and Bleach; even stuff like Jojo, Reborn!, or even Death Note pale in comparison to the three major shounen. I'm not sure why, really. ..;

Weird thing is, in AQS, its the other way around for One Piece, Reborn, and Jojo. Like some people who heard of One Piece there think of it was overrated or some overlook the series. However, Bleach and Naruto there are a whole different story..

I was thinking about starting watching it; it looks very interesting. I also really like the animation; I'd really like to see it dubbed. I'd agree that Geneon would make a good choice; they do some lesser known series don't they?

I'd be thrilled. I hate ADV a lot, and I really like Haruhi, but with such a pricetag for the show, licensing it would put ADV back quite a bit for budget (which is why a lot of the popular series currently airing have not been licensed). Haruhi in ADV's hands will get a sour dub, but I'll be happy because Higurashi, Ouran, Zero and Negima?! will have escaped their clutches.
Ouran..I have a feeling VIZ will be dubbing it and releasing it in their Shoujo Beat DVD line like what they did with Full Moon.
Zero and Higurashi definetly in Geneon(Higurashi) or Funi's(Zero) hands and as for Negima?!, definetly Funimation.

Theres no word on season 2 but some people got confussed with the September 2006 issue of Newtype in Japan. In which Haruhi was on it with two fingers up and the term "RETURNS" under her. It was talking about the second DVD being released tho.

Ok, I just finished watching this on request of my roomate. People, if your bored out there, and want a light hearted, fun anime This is the one.
It's so inovative in it's story telling. The episodes are all in random chronological order. This makes it more interesting to try and figure out what is going on. The first episode is a total "WTH" moment. But great, non the less.
The art and animation are supurb. The charicters are all enjoyable in their own way. Tons of comedy. I'm also told, that if you are familiar with japanese culture, and madia, you will pick up on a lot of inside humor. (I didn't get any of it, but I could tell it was there)
I had losts of Laugh out Loud moments in this anime. if I had to rate it out of 10 (10 being tops) I'd give it an 8.5. (only because they didn't resolve everything in the last episode….but this leaves lots of room for more seasons....drool)

Well, the term Esper comes from ESP (extra-sensory perception), which is like telepathy and stuff like that. But I haven't seen this series, so I don't know how it is used (and yes, I clicked the spoiler button anyway).
And I'm fairly sure that the term is originally a western one. You've heard the term in Final Fantasy VI right? Well, the term "Esper" was used for the American localization. The Japanese term supposedely translated to "Phantom Beast", but the translator just chose to use the term "Esper" instead. So actually, that's a case of the term Esper appearing in American culture (since it wasn't used in the Japanese FFVI).
oh, well see, I didn't know that. I thought Esper was the japanese term because I've never heard it otherwise. I like the word esper better, but meaning wise, but neither's definition really suits the charicters.
Concerning the possibility of a second season: There's definitely enough material in the books for at least another 14 episodes. I really hope they delve deeper into the fact that…

After watching this anime series, I went to Otakon with the express mission to buy the Suzumiya Haruhi novels (in their original Japanese!) so I can get more info on Kyon's role in Haruhi's(?) universe. I was disappointed to find only the first volume of the manga (not novel!) in stock. Blegh!
So, a little while later (read: two weeks) I got online, looked for the novels, compared prices, and have ordered the first six volumes ($41.94 total, free shipping). They should be arriving sometime this month or early next month. This is going to be the first time I will be reading a Japanese novel (as opposed to manga) for fun rather than for schoolwork.
I might actually read it too, if I had the books. person who hates reading novels here

Oh belive me, dont expect to see any angst or drama, this is a 100% feel good show and a very popular one at that.

This show was without a doubt one of the best new shows of the year. All the characters were great and I loved the order they showed the episodes in, which helped to build up the suspense.
