Meh…the last couple chapters nearly drove me nuts. Many things were good in them (Mana and Takamichi's sudden arrival in Magic World, Ako/Natsumi/Akira returning, the Chachamaru/Chisame stuff), but others are just getting on my nerves (we get it on how powerful Negi is compared to others, Akira not even putting up a fight against the taskmasters, the moaning tards who want the Library Club and KonoSetsu back in the story) In my head, that puts the series about at .500
Ken Akamatsu thread (A.I. Love You, Love Hina, Negima, UQ Holder)

I enjoyed 190-191 the most though…God Chisame was too adorable.
And as for 195...fugitive in hiding or not with those age pills, Negi better tell the truth to Ako about her "Beloved Nagi" soon...keeping it in longer just raises the heart break. Negi should be telling Akira and Natsumi as well about their age pills...

Akira's basically figured it out, Natsumi…I can't really tell. And Ako...this is going to be hard on her.

And the longer Akamatsu plans for Negi not telling her just builds the damn suspense. So Akira's found out…that explains that expression on her face, but yeah, I dont think Natsumi knows yet...But then again...Ako finding out can lead to so much.
-
I JUST got into the manga several months ago. I really need to catch up a lot. I'm already asking for volumes 3-10 for Christmas.
-
Negima Chapter 196 is out today. Looks like the whole tournament "bet" battle in order to get Ako, Akira, and Natsumi free's finally begun.
Negi and Kotarou's new outfits were pretty awesome. The armor looks pretty good on them.
And of course, another victim falls by their hands.Overall, good chapter.
-
2v1?
cheaters!!!!!! -
-
Another chapter, another victory for Negi and Kotaro…ho-hum. Its like he's literally becoming his father instead of his own person and that they never seem to have a challenge unless its Fate or someone tied to daddy.
-
-
Really couldn't stand the last chapter for multiple reasons:
-With Yuna and Makie found, all of the "non-magic students" now have been located in the story and not one of them are anywhere that could learn anything further or have interactions with someone other than their typical ones.
-I'm really sick of Negi and the whole power structure in this series. Negi is just made too uber to anyone who isn't Fate/Crimson Wing/certain students and it just sickens me that he's like "this is getting me nowhere, I'm uber but not super uber!" And with "swordsman from Crimson Wing" finally appearing…well OK him appearing is cool but its coincidental and is going to lead to another beatdown akin to when he fought Albireo.
-With time thrown out of whack and who knows when they'll return to the human world (considering we don't know how long Magic World time and human world time match up), he's going to miss out on a good chunk of Mahora time he could be using getting further character development to students who need it and instead be stuck with his usual suspects. -

Anyone besides the characters you stated are being made by Akamatsu as if they're small and pathetic against Negi, who apparently thinks he wont meet his match until he faces Fate's group, the Crimson Wing, Takamichi, Nagi, and Eva, but that kind of thinking's a little dangerous. I mean besides the groups/people who Negi looks up to in order to become strong, even against Fate's group, there's a feeling as if he finds his other opponents mere small fish to plunder. That kind of attitude could get him into some deep shit, alias he seems to under estimate or face any opponent who isn't Nagi or the others he looks up to, like he's must be super uber to make his point or something.
New chapter, Negi does run into the sword guy, but encounters to a certain entity that may have some grudge against him or might be part of Fate's group.
Judging from this last page, looks like something does happen to Negi…

Yeah, he became pretty annoying when he started to say things like that since Herrmann Arc.

Looking at you, Zazie Rainyday…
-
Yeah, he became pretty annoying when he started to say things like that since Herrmann Arc.
It was understood he wasn't the best out there with Kyoto, but its like the more training arcs we have to go through, the more he seems to show how uber he is to everyone…not named Eva, Fate, Asuna or a member of the Crimson Wing. I sort of hope or wish there would be some more wild card characters added ala Kotaro to give him a challenge but sadly I just don't even know anymore. Somehow I sort of read Negima for a more balanced shonen in action and character development, not watching a select few go inside a Hyperbolic Time Chamber while everyone else barely gets any character development.

I understand his situation after Kyoto Arc, but the point is since Herrmann Arc he brings out the damn subject that "he needs to be stronger" almost every time. That's just me though.

I watched the first episode. Kinda weird at moments. I have one question.
What the heck is going on here?

[qimg]http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h176/CaptainRootbeer/windeup.jpg[/qimg]
What the heck is going on here?
Hakase's winding Chachamaru, and Misa's doing some cheer leading. Take my advice, go with the MANGA. The anime completely bastardized character designs and the main storyline, plus the anime's finale sucked.
-
But why does Chachamaru need winding? That's my question.
-
Because according to her profile, in the manga… she likes that.
:ermm:
-
@Pass:
But why does Chachamaru need winding? That's my question.
What Kuroneko said, and it probably helps her functions a little. But again, dont bother with the anime at all, the manga has way more better arcs and more fighting once you hit volume 6.
-
So I'm all caught up.
It's annoying that Negi can't seem to break into the "upper level" of these power monsters - it's like in order to be utterly strong, he'd have to throw away his sense of self and turn out to be a Nagi or Asuna. He can't do that, meaning he'll never kill Fate.
I mean, the whole "SO A "AA" LEVEL IS TOO MUCH HUH" - in the past, Negi managed to come out OK against Takahata (yeah, he was going easy on him, so what) and Eva, and Akamatsu ret-cons those wins out the window with everyone else being so absurdly powerful.
The strength difference between Kotarou and Negi is astounding as well, but the difference between those two and the Crimson Wing is just bleh.
@Pass:
But why does Chachamaru need winding? That's my question.
She's a karakuri ningyo (wind up doll), so she needs to have magic power thrust into her to work. Apparently, the whole winding experience is a big euphemism for something.
-
In short, Negi has to stop going to his throw of sense and start thinking more before gets killed. Yeah, I agree though, Negi is smart but he's starting to become like his father and this could be some development in the story. I mean, LOOK AT HIS FACE in this page.
I can bet by the end of this arc, young or adult, Negi can find himself developing into an attitude similar to his father, -
I watched the second episode.
…....
This is a preteen boy's wet dream. Seriously, some parts were embarassing to watch. The no panties scene. The fake kiss. And the preview for episode three features Asuna in her underwear? Not to mention the volleyball scene in the opening. If it wasn't for the fact that these girls are like 14 or 15, I'd enjoy it.Daisuke told me the manga is better but I got a friend who keeps telling to me stay away from the manga. -_-
-
The manga is very Akamatsu. Lot of running gags and innuendo and such. People who have developed a hatred of Akamatsu won't like the manga, but if you like his stuff…dive right in.
The first anime series was horrible. Just plain horrible. The second season was better, had a weird style but was otherwise more kosher - it was better, but not very faithful to the original story either.
Neo...talk to Daisuke. He'll probably be more accurate than I ever could.
-
Manga: Has more awesome fighting to it (post volume 6), way better art, more development, still running Unlike the 1st anime's rushed and mega crappy ending), and way more of an expansive environment. That friend of yours Rootbeer, probably only read the 1st two volumes.
-
I've only read the first two volumes -_-
But I like the manga, I just need to read MOAR

At this point, I rather have the second anime over Akamatsu. I'm sick of these training arcs and seperating the "uber" from those who need character development or giving Negi any sort of challenge if its not Eva, Fate or a member of the Crimson Wing. I really wish Negi could be his own man instead of obsessively walking to become a clone of his father.
As for the first series…yeah, there are a few good episodes from what I hear that are similar to the manga (Eva arc, the episode with Negi, Konoka and the cheerleaders), but bail out after the "decent" Sayo episode so you won't get stuck with the crap.
-
Why didn't anyone tell me Chachamaru was a robot/cyborg/whatever? That was the answer I was looking for you guys!
Also, in what episode does Asuna first show her powers?
-
Wow you just noticed it later O_o?
I don't know really the episode where Asuna shows her powers by the first time (I didn't watch any of the animes anyway), but I tell you that happens during Kyoto Arc, during the first confront with the witch that summons monkeys.
-
And that is arc number what?
-
After Evangeline Arc

Don't you think I'm in the same boat? I just stopped following weekly during the tournaments because it all felt irrelevant and dumb. I've never been a fan of the fights in Negima!, if anything I prefer the romance stuff and what Daisuke seems to like (since the fanservice is never appealing to me, outside of the unique stuff like "winding" Chachamaru).
What I want to see is more "magical teacher" moments, where Negi solves his student's problems while struggling as an alcoholic, single ten-year old in a dead-end job that drudges on day by day…:D
An older Negi is fine too. I await the day he turns into Garlock - not Kamina, not Starlock, but Garlock.
-
It would be cool to see the PS2 games over here but I HIGHLY doubt that'll happen…
-
Well as long as this thread has been bumped…
The latest chapter was alright if only because we get more Ako. I would have liked it more if it wasn't so filled with Negi angst.
-
Yeah, glad to see more of Ako in this chapter, hopefully she'll find out soon about Negi.
-
Negima 200 is scanlated. I concur..
Rakan's one of the best characters so far.
-
Rakan is amazing. About time we get a member of Nagi's group that isn't a bishonen.
Oh, and the latest chapter..OK, its great Kazumi finally got her Pactio but it sort of just "came out of nowhere" even if its been promised for a long time. But hey…it wins at least for having "adult Chisame".
-
I like Rankan, but I don't like the implication. One of the themes of Negima! in my mind is "power is hollow without a purpose" and Rankan seems concerned only with giving Negi power. I want Negi to get a cynical edge but by heaven I hope he doesn't turn into Nagi.
-
Rankan's poses made me chuckle in 201, and honestly hoping for more Chisame development somewhere in the "Mage world" arc.
-

Sadly he already is. With all the uber powerups and encounters with Nagi's group, he's just becoming more and more like his daddy instead of finding his own path.
-
he's just becoming more and more like his daddy instead of finding his own path.
Dont really see what's wrong with him becoming like Nagi, unless there's some flaw I forgot about his dad.
-
I think the bad part of it is that he is not himself, but a sort of copy of his own father.
-
@Daisuke:

Nagi's a horrible character, as far as I'm concerned. Pompous, irresponsible, and exceedingly dangerous. It's like giving a machine gun to a fourteen year old boy who is infatuated with Doom and other first person shooters and letting him lose in society.
I'm not partial to Takahata either because of the "duty to my old friends is greater than anything" vibe. I get the impression from Takahata he'd be willing to kill Negi or any of the Mahora characters if Nagi asked him to; he's almost not like their friend at all, but just an acquaintance of a unknown relative. Eva never gave off this vibe even though she has a history with Nagi, though she was never in Nagi's "clique" as it were.
I really think Negi needs to move beyond his tired-old "I'm extremely prim and proper" personality. I mean, I'm not expecting a lot of change, but just some change would be most welcome.
-
My problem with Negi wanting to be a Nagi clone is that it just doesn't seem too befitting. While I've seen many shonen heroes who have an important father, many times they rather find their own way as opposed to cloning everything that their dad did (in one way or another). Look at Luffy: his dad is a dangerous revolutionary who wants to literally change the world, his grandpa is an honored marine…and here he is running around as a pirate trying to gain the ultimate treasure. Yes Luffy has the lineage but he's still able to do his own thing with his own skills.
If anything, Negi is slowly falling into the same problem that is held up by Naruto: a kid who has a very famous father and who is slowly learning bit by bit how to exactly be like him. At least in Naruto's case his father was dead before the story started...but he's still getting guidance to both inherit and surpass everything Minato did. As for Negi, he's just too obsessed in being a little Nagi clone instead of finding his own way to grow and change into a better person. Unlike Minato, Nagi is still out there and Negi just thinks that the only way to be as strong is to do everything he did: hang out with the same people, learn similar styles of fighting etc. And the fact that several of his students and faculty are so tied to his dad so easily (Asuna, Konoka's dad, Albireo, Takamichi) just makes it so much harder to escape this.

The planet Neptune just EXPLODED OUT OF MY CHEST IN SHEER UTTER AWE OF THE AMAZING AWESOME OF THE LATEST NEGIMA! CHAPTER. Read on, dear hearts. It brings tears of wonder to my harrowed eyes (Period 205 spoilers).
@4chan:
Negi is given a scroll from Evangeline. There is a spell placed on it so he can only read it if has made up his mind and chosen the path of darkness
If he choses the path of light he won't be able to open it. He still has time to change his mind if he wants to.
Later, Negi goes to Rakan and lets his decision be known. It might be the wrong choice, he might end up astray in his path because of that, but in order to continue his journey with everyone, in order to reach the greatness his father once achieved.
..he chooses the path of darkness and opens the scroll
Rakan is quite a surprised and ask his reasoning. After, all, choosing the path of darkness is inverse of what Nagi was.
Negi says that he had come to realization that no matter what, he is not his father, nor will he become his father. If he has a talent of darkness then he will grab this chance and grow.(omgwtf!!)
Furthermore, he says he really adores his master Evangeline
Rakan laughs out loud. He tells Negi that what he said sounded like a love confession. Negi panics.
But enough of that, Rakan confirms once again if Negi really wants to embark on the path of darkness. It is not not an easy path, in fact it is quite harsh. Negi says he was prepared for all of that before he opened the scroll.
Just than an apparition of Evangeline is summoned from the scroll. She says that the path of darkness is not by any chance and quick and easy path. She grabs Negi by the head and engulfs him in her magic. This is his first test, he must survive the darkness or perish by it.
At first I was all,
Then,
I beamed!
-
Meh, didn't like the chapter. Just because Negi isn't his father doesn't mean he has to be Evangeline either! Can't there be another way that goes down neither path?
Not to mention that it seems like the only people Negi respects anymore are those in his big uber warrior group…with only Makie and Ayaka even barely there in his memories. I just hope this doesn't means the rest of the class isn't abandoned and the series stays in Magical World.
And my final complaint: why the heck is all of Negi's group lucky and not the stowaways? Every friggin member who was "trained and failed" found the perfect place for them to get even more uber (Yue: school, Nodoka: treasure hunting, Asuna and Setsuna together) while those with potential as well (Ako, Akira, even Yuna) are servents and waitresses! If it weren't for Chisame, Chachamaru and maybe Ako and Akira, I really wish I could wipe this whole arc from my memory.

I don't see your point??
All magic in the Negima! universe derives its nature from light/dark elements. Wind/thunder are light, ice/fire are dark. As one specializes further one type of magician gets chosen. Remember, Chao was a fire user.
And how could you complain when this is HUGE development! It tops almost everything except the biggest secrets in One Piece since for like the whole manga, Negi's one objective was, "I want to be just like father". And he didn't even have to be told, "No, Negi. You can never be the father. Then Negi was the son" - he figured it out on his own! Rankan sort of clued him in I guess though…
Finally, yes, Negi is his own man. Remember there are traditional mages/magic swordsmen and there are light/dark mages. Nagi is a light, magic swordsman. Eva is a dark traditional mage.
Negi is a dark magic swordsmen.

Definitely not, but don't think he's rejected his friends just because he's undergoing training. I definitely think now though that Negi's going to surpass his father - Nagi sounds like a cheat, which is why he had so many pactios.
@Tokoro:

There's no potential for Ako, Akira, or Yuna. No way in heck - Chisame has a better chance then they do! Arguably Akira's one of the filler girls in the class who barely gets screen-time at all!
And I think rather than being "lucky", the girls ended up in interesting situations because the magic world is an interesting place. OR, that spell that blasted everyone apart had the intention of taking them where they wanted to go. We don't know yet!
-

But at the same time, it feels like you can't just mix and match them together. It just feels like if Negi sacrifices himself into darkness, then he'll just force himself to be more like Eva.
What Negi should be is himself, not Nagi and not Eva. He's just throwing one support figure away to follow on the path of the other, particularly now that he's conveniently with the member of Nagi's troupe that specializes in Dark Magic. When I see Negi's evolution of training, I more imagine things along the line of combining Ku Fei's martial arts with his own magic to create something new, which he has done. While I don't credit the kid for making these decisions, there has to be some sort of backlash in making this choice instead of him just becoming uber powerful. (see Sasuke)
Finally, yes, Negi is his own man. Remember there are traditional mages/magic swordsmen and there are light/dark mages. Nagi is a light, magic swordsman. Eva is a dark traditional mage.
Negi is a dark magic swordsmen.
He doesn't seem like his own man to me. He seems like a kid who's taking in a combination of his father's battle ability and Evangeline's magic. Some say that's becoming something different, I say that's becoming a hybrid.
Definitely not, but don't think he's rejected his friends just because he's undergoing training. I definitely think now though that Negi's going to surpass his father - Nagi sounds like a cheat, which is why he had so many pactios.
I didn't say he rejected his friends. All I'm saying is that in the memory section, he only shows that he wants to be like certain students in the class that have battle abilities and skill instead of taking in a bit from all thirty-one of them. As it stands, his group just gets more and more solidified the longer this arc goes along with no means of change or possibility that someone else may show something or join in with their own thing.
That's where you and I differ. When this series began, all thirty one girls had massive potential to do something in this story. If you take out the whole ecchi factor of the early volumes, I saw Negi in an experience where he could be connected and learn from all of them as they can learn and change from them. And as it stands, of all the allies and connections he's made so far, he's only needed four of them: Asuna (the main heroine), Konoka (the daughter of one of his allies), Evangeline (his enemy turned tutor) and Chao (the possible connection to his future). From there, any of the other 27 girls could have been connected and brought into this world and shown themselves as possible and amazing allies and inspirations.
The only reason Ako, Akira and Yuna (among the many others) seem like such a drag is because they aren't in the group yet and haven't shown themselves. All of them have potential, the same potential that characters like Nodoka, Yue and Haruna had at the beginning. If Akamatsu releases the potential of some of his students and not others, then its a waste in the story. Its like the circumstances allow some girls to go from nothing to uber and others to just remain nothing turning them into what could have been…and this is supposed to be a series where everyone is important and defined. This is why I'm really peeved at him throwing the sports girls and Natsumi in the servitude and waitressing jobs and the Ala Aba coincidently in places that would make them even greater than they are now. Girls who have amazing potential to do something with latent talent (such as Yuna's magical gunmanship) and those who could get closer to Negi's group and their own truth (Ako) get nothing while the ones Negi has already bonded with seperate themselves even further. At the rate we're going, I'd bet most of the Negima fans wouldn't care if they come back from Magical World, magically kill off every other student in the class and then just go on to another uber opponent after or connected to Fate...they've got the ones they love and who cares about the others. (even if those "wasted" ones include some of my favorite characters)

wait...

Basically Negi wants to play Eva now?
