So. CBS has announced that Murphy Brown is coming back for 13 episodes. Reallllllly dunno how to feel about that.
I grew up on the show and liked it (I guess. More, my mother liked it so I watched it.) The news media has certainly changed and there's certainly still stories to tell there but…
The old show was always super topical (in namedropping anyway... not actually discussing anything) and it reeeeeeally did not age well. At all. Other similar shows, like Newsradio, Just Shoot Me, WKRP, etc. aged better, perhaps because they weren't so rooted in the exact minute they were airing.
And I just have no idea what kind of place it would have here and now.
I would however hope that, considering Bergen in now 71 years old, that they don't try to just recreate the old show and handle it with a very very different take. (She's pretty much have to be the head of an orginization at this point rather than a reporter, I'd think.)
Also while they'll no doubt get gratuitous cameos from everyone on the old show, (as did Boy Meets World and Full House) that they basically don't have carry over and its mostly a new crew. You don't keep people together at a job for twenty years, you just don't.
They ARE getting back the show's original creator at least, who originally left halfway through the series. So that's something I guess.
This is also interesting because I super distinctly remember it's final episode airing the same night as Roseanne's final episode. And now they're both coming back at about the same time? Weird. Also Will & Grace?
I also have to assume basically the entire show will be Murphy going after Trump.
