! So it seems that the government woman (can't remember her name) is the true villain. At the end when Meicoomon went evil mode and everyone had a gasped reaction, she smiled. Seems like that weird Digimon with the red cape over its head is creating a projection of Ken to make it seem like he's went evil again. Still wondering where the season 2 crew fit into this. Certainly with the main cast thinking Ken's the bad guy they'll try and track them down?

Good thing I wasn't drinking anything when I was watching the movie.

Chapter 3 comes out September 24.
I dunno. I like Mimi's arc and Joe's crisis is hitting too close to home at the moment, but it felt like it needed more. It's chapter 2 of 6 so I get there's gonna be vagueness at this point, but the plot still feels draggy. Chapter 1 I guess did too, but it was the start of the gang coming back together, so I just was hoping for more this time around but instead we got more of the same. Plot did kinda progress, but at the same time…

! Still do not get why Palmon and Goman have been able to enter the dimension but the rest not?
! And if this woman is evil why wqas she so suprised by the Kaiser? Or better what has Ken be doing or was it just a hologram? And what has Huckmon to do with it?
! Do not get this -
! Something was really off with Ken and Imperialdramon. I really liked how Mimi and Jou were handled! Mimi is the best. I think she's now my favorite, too.
-
I want to know why these have to be movies I'm seeing the animation and see nothing that demands it to be a movie.
To be honest even the story arc of characters feels hurt by the fact that these are 6 movies often lacking a lot of context for me and having me scratch my had "so that's really the struggle you're having?".
First movie with Tai this one with Joe. And the only way they attempt to make struggles relatable is a lot of silence and self loathing both times…. urgh...But I guess teenangst....
-
In the meantime, found this abridged series over at tv tropes. Episode 1 was pretty funny (and surprisingly accurate with a certain plot point). Looking forward to the creation of Episode 2.
-
Do you know what is funny?
No one of the "originals" are giving the slightest fuck about the 02 kids… Even Kari and Takeru. For real now. They are meeting each day, go on "parties", inform themselves via WhatsApp left and right but no one seems to wonder where they are or even ties to inform them. It's not like a motherfucking ImperialDramon would help a lot in the situations
Meiko is a better buddy already for them as the 02 kids
-
At this point it seems like clumsy writing, but I personally don't care for the 02 kids except for Ken, so I don't mind.
-
BTW another question
I rewathed 02… Can someone explain to me why they stopped using DigiEggs later on?

Simple: Regular evolutions are more powerful than Armor evolutions. Same reason why you didn't see Greymon as much in the original series after MetalGreymon and WarGreymon were introduced. And besides, like five episodes after XV-mon was introduced, he fused with Stingmon to form the even more powerful Paildramon, making the armor evolutions even more outclassed. Plus there's that whole thing with the enemies they faced also conveniently getting more and more powerful as the story progressed.

Shitty Azulongmon.
PS
Thank You -
Magnamon is also equal to an Ultimate evolved digimon, so keeping that digegg with them would have given a great advantage in the upcoming battles, such as BlackWargreymon.
As for the 02 kids, I dunno, I think we should wait for further information in the next movie, because this one only raised more questions regarding this particular matter. All I recall is in Sakai Himekawa was surveying the locations of all digistined in her monitor, and those 4 were marked as MIA.
-
With the 02 kids, these guys presumably have known for a while that they've disappeared, so they've had no real reason to talk about them yet. So so far I don't have a huge problem with them not informing us about what happened. It needs to happen in part 3, though, considering what happened at the end of 2.

! Do not get this! I think "Ken" made it happen. It seems he's trying to get these guys to reach a new level to fight against a greater evil. Basically he backed those two into a corner where they needed to reach a new level to survive.

Naah sorry it seems like a really weak plot to just keep them out and no one mentioning them for once.
Next questions… Both TK and Kari and their D3 should be able to open a portal to the digiworld... Yet they never use it.
Other strange thing is... People seems to be shocked about Digimon and such stuff yet in 02 they already have spotted them on mass in the real world. At the end Digimon and Huhan lived together. Now they are acting as it is something new for them?
-

They can and they would if there was an urgency. The digital distortions are clearly something of a completely distinct nature with no relation with common portals. Going further from here would be spoiling stuff from Ketsui, and I'm not in the mood right now. But let's just say that for the meantime they don't know how to tackle this problem, as the distortions and the infected digimon appear in their world when you less expect. Knowing this, staying is the obvious and appropiate choice.

To be precise, save for chosen destined and their relatives, everybody else was scared shitless when the digimon started to invade, and just because we are now being shown people cursing the digimons doesn't mean everyone thinks the same. People have also been speculating that the ending of 02 has been retconned, which to be honest I wouldn't mind if it was.

That is something weird. After 02, Kari stated that people obtained a partner. But in Tri, only the original Digidestined, Meiko and the 02 kids are the only ones with a partner. Nothing is said about the international digidestined or the Oikawa kids.
This is something I hope they explain in future chapters. -

This is something I hope they explain in future chapters. They never specified when everyone in the world obtained a partner, so it didn't have to occur right after the 02 ending/defeat of the bad guy. And IIRC, it has been said that they are keeping the epilogue of 02 canon.

! Given how the crew reacts to Ken in this film, I'm hoping that there are explanations in Chapter 3. The writers clearly set it up so that the whole deal with Ken is meant to be vague/unclear by the end of Chapter 2, so the whole deal with Davis/ Yolei/ Cody/ Ken won't make sense yet. And I might have been okay with that if one episode wasn't a hot springs episode and another episode wasn't dedicated to a school festival. Fanservice galore. It's like the writers were expecting the kids that grew up with Digimon to want to see the Digidestined sexualized.
! I wish the focus was more on going through problems of being an outcast for following the beat of their own drum/ going through depression for being subjugated to the stress of being part of the real world/ the issue brought up in Chapter 1 but glossed over here about Digimon fighting in the real world and the ramifications of it. Because Mimi realizing it's okay to do her own thing at the school festival but not forcing it on others is one thing, it's another when her actions accidentally cause a helicopter to go down. Yes, they said the helicopter shouldn't have been too close, but what about if another fight does occur in a crowded area, like what if the fight with Imperialdramon occurred at the school festival instead of the pocket dimension. Would the kids have waited until everyone was evacuated? -

Sora aso fashion designer (although now it would make more sense after the latest episode), Mimi a cook. Seemed super random.

I dislike Meiko!! She was not that necessary!! She's just there to create love interest for Tai and make a square with Yamato & Sora!! =(
And her look is sooo Hinata from Naruto (which I also dislike)!
Didn't the writers know from 02 experience that we like the original 8 kids way more than the new characters!! Right now I could care less about Daisuke/Yolei/Iori/Ken

BTW another question
I rewathed 02… Can someone explain to me why they stopped using DigiEggs later on?
The explanation in the show was something like "they only Armor Digivolved when forced to by the control spires".
I'm really not sure what to think of Tri so far, other than the obvious: it's not Digimon; It's a slice of life series with the occasional fight thrown in every four episodes. At one point it became straight up Sex and the City, with the Digimon sitting around a coffee table discussing Gomamon's breakup with Joe.
-
And here we go again with "it's not Digimon because there's only one or two fights every 4 episodes". Pay attention for a second, please. The only reason it's split in 4 episodes is because Crunchyroll is streaming it in this format. IT'S A MOVIE.
It's Digimon like it has always been: action sure, but also slice of life, character development, comedy, world exporation, etc.
Meiko is fine and I really like her. She has started to gain chemistry with the rest of the group, give it some time and she'll eventually strengthen herself as the 9th member.
It's always easy to badmouth characters without waiting for them to develop. You don't like her? Fine by me, but take your speculation and false conjectures elsewhere.
Seriously, this fandom…

The show does have all of those things (except for world building, we really haven't seen much of the world at all), but they're radically disproportionate. Previous shows focused primarily on action, and this show focuses primarily on slice of life interactions. I didn't say it was bad, but it's so different from what I expected that I don't feel comfortable judging it yet.
-
"50 long episode seasons and over twenty minutes of lenght each". Tri is comprised of only 6 movies, and you can only pack this much in 90 minutes.
I understand your confusion, though. When you get used to the usual format it takes some time to adapt to the new. Not me, since I always preferred plot development over all out battling.
-
But there isn't too much plot going on? It's unfair to do a 1-to-1 comparison between Tri and the show, but arguably there's been 8 episodes of content, and the pace in the original Digimon Adventure was never this slow, whose episodes are about 20 minutes. And I'm not talking about just battles either, I'm talking about plot development or character development. Take any 8 episodes from the original Digimon Adventure and see how much was covered in those 8 episodes vs. what's been covered in Digimon Adventure Tri so far.
I guess I also just wish the films could stand on its own more individually given they are choosing to format this as 6 films. Chapter 2 feels like a Part 2 and not its own film. The whole thing seems to have been written as 6 chapters to 1 whole story instead of 6 stories to one whole saga (or 6 books to one whole series). Or basically, it's the difference between making a film from a book vs. making two films from the same book. Digimon Adventure Tri feels like it was written like the latter, and it's a 6 part series. That's the biggest takeaway for me.

Also, a Behind the Scenes featurette.
-
I fail to see what you understand as slow pace, but to each its own. And yes, it's a six part story, thst was the intention, so what's so surprising about that? The more I read in this thread, the more I think some are watching this show with rose tinted eyes. I better not stay around here too often, it may be bad for my health.

It's more like really few plot happening like Gizmo said. If we talking about Slice of Life, tons of other anime are better out there and it's not movie format.
Maybe the problem here is it's a movie format. I expect many things if this is movie format. Harry Potter movies can cover 1000 pages of novels, yet This Digimon barely equal to an arc of a manga.. This is even worse than Sailor Moon Crystal that got 26 episodes but only run every 2-3 weeks and fans complaining its pace. So expect that Tri actually will get more complaints if they don't fix the plot from part 3 onwards….
-
The script was finished before the movies began airing, so take it however you want. Besides, is not like we have little info so far, because there's quite a good number of scenes in both movies that are really important. Only that it will take some time before we get to know how everything ties up. It's called foreshadowing for something.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Anyway, I know I shouldn't be saying this since I assume everyone read the interview, but... in the second movie, Sora helped Meiko out with her oufit...
hinting at her future career as a modist, remember? Part of the reason the ending of 02 left a bittersweet aftertaste in the majority of viewers was because it came outta nowhere and didn't even bother to explain properly how and why everybody took their respective career paths. Tri is there to not only give us a brand new adventure, but also provide with the answers for this... and who knows if it will also fix the Dark Sea stuff and Demon's scheme.
And you should stop naming Toei in anything that isn't either the animation budget or the fact they have the rights to broadcast the show, as the script was written by independent professionals not affiliated to the studio.
-
Just finish watching it and I enjoy it. I enjoy this slice of life more than the actual fight scene but I can see why some people don't enjoy it as much. Anyway this review kinda made the movie more clearer for me.
-
You know what they say: "The last of this is not like the others". I can also undertand that to some people this may have caught them by surprise. Though if one remembers Digimon actually started like this… As a matter of fact, I will always enjoy diversity of genres rather than all out mindless action.

Wow, a well written review in Kotaku of all places. Nice find pal, I'll keep track.

I'm still looking at it based on the TV series format, but you're absolutely right; Movie format was a poor choice for this adaptation. I can't think of a single successful series of six movies where each individual movie could not stand on its own.

That's pretty much what I was getting at with my previous post. And funny enough, the story can be formed such that it's closer to the movie format by making each film "episodic". In many respects, Chapter 2 is the Joe/Mimi "film" where the focus is on their character development along with the inclusion of Mei-Mei in the group. The story had the beginning/middle/end of those three story arcs and have it all wrapped up with the climatic battle while also sprinkling more hints down the line of the overall direction of the plot. I just think it could've been tighter. Films like episodes that are part of a longer running series can actually hold up on its own despite being part of a larger overall narrative if written that way. It's just this series isn't being written that way, and in some respects, the original series/02 was able to write stories in that way so it feels like the show is taking a step back.
The second film I'm just extra salty about given there's a large chunk devoted to a hot springs visit and then another chunk dedicated to a school festival, which isn't ideal given the bulk of the moments didn't pertain to plot/character (and before you jump on me people, I recognize Mimi's arc revolved around setting up the school festival, and we needed to see her be happy at the job/see how she still influences Mei-Mei in a good way so it has character moments, not to mention the confrontation between Joe/Gomamon happened at the school festival. Still it felt longer than it needed to be and most of it felt like fluff).
To be fair though, I've typed a lot of negative thoughts when there's plenty I'm happy about with Chapter 2. Mimi and Joe were totally in character going through things that definitely felt like Mimi/Joe issues, and the resolution felt like how Mimi/Joe would resolve it. Gomamon proves yet again why he's the most interesting of the Digimon. I felt bad for Leomon this right around with his arc, and kudos to the setup of that villain. Makes rewatches have a whole new light to them and interested to see where it goes from here.
-
I'm not sure happy is the right word for me… I was bored for a lot of it.
-
!
Thanks to this I understand now why Taichi hesitated when he realized Alphamon was leaving. If the fusion hadn't broken, Wargreymon and MetalGarurumon would have sustained serious injuries because Omegamon shot the Garuru Cannon at point blank-range.

Real a HQ poster of Digimon Adventure tri part 3
-
Who's the evil looking Digimon next to Patamon? He kind of looks like he could be a new form of Patamon, but I only really know his Angemons and little dragon thing forms.
Looks like part 3 will focus on Izzy and TK. TK was my favorite growing up, so that's cool. I'd have expected his episode to be with Kari, though, since they're usually bunched together.
-
Part 2 hasn't been released yet right? All this part 3 talk makes me feel like I somehow missed the former.

It came out a few weeks ago.

Wada Kouji passed away on April 3rd.
Seventeen years later, and pretty much every time I hear his Butter-fly I can not help it but get goosebumps. That song was the soundtrack of my childhood.
Thank you for everything. May you rest in peace, Wada Kouji.

Man, watching the rest of Adventure Tri is going to be quite the ride now.
Rest in peace Wada, we will always remember you, and thank you for all the wornderful memories you have given us.
