@AWB:
Question: how the puck did Snake Eyes, Cobra Commander, Raphael the Mutant Turtle, and Buffy the vampire slayer make it into the top 200 comic book characters of all time? Just because you appear in a comic doesn't make you a comic book character.
The Turtles were first a comic, the series and the movies came later. So with Raphael it's okay to say he's a comic book character. Buffy got a comic, right? I agree that the fact you got a comic book after you made a show or a movie doesn't give you the right to be called "comic book character".
Besides, Buffy is based on Shadowcat, so SHE should get her number!
But where can I see the entire list?
-
Oops, forgot to finish what I had to say about Raphael.
Sure, he was my favorite of the turtles, but why he is the highest rated turtle? I thought that would go to anyone but Raphael. As far as I knew, he was the least popular of the four.
-
I thank you Freeman for the recommendations, but is there anything you could possibly send me or link me to at the moment?
Hmmm I'll see what I can do.
@AWB- Actually Raph was the Turtle that focused the most on in the early comics. Plus how could Raph be the least popular? Maybe because of the cartoon but if anyone's been a fan of the comics from the begging, Raph's popularity could come from the fact that he is the hotheaded one.
…and 60s IronMan is indeed badass.EDIT: BTW what's the reading order for Annihilation?

Raphael was this annoying rebel yeller, right? I never was able to distinguishable them from another, even though they had different color schemes and weapons, because basically, they are all the same.
But again: Where can I see the entire list of the comic characters you are speaking of?

Wow, quite the large PM, Freeman. I'm lost just like I was with your Deadpool PM. But I'm sure I'll manage, thanks!

Why did I just knew Wolverine would be the #1 …? Such lists are so stupid. Either Leonidas nor Buffy Summers have no bearing on such lists, you should contrain this list on the "classical superheroes", not on EVERY character ever appeared in a comic book ... hey, where are Asterix and Captain Haddock?
You could go to such lengths and even split the list into Marvel/DC, but I think it also works this way. Although of course Nightcrawler and Colossus are way to low in the rankings ... and I don't see the Ventriloquist.
-
According to Wizard, his tough demeanor gave hope to people during the Nixon Administraton. Bull. If he really did that, he would have been a house-hold name outside the comic book community before the TV show came out.
The number one spot should go to either Spiderman or Batman. Whether or not you like them, you have to admit they've had the most culutrally significant impact. Spiderman changed the face of comics forever and Batman gives hope to those who have been wronged. Number three should definetly go to Superman, who unlike Wolverine actually did give hope to people when he was first introduced.
How the fuck did Hellboy rank in the top ten? I know he's popular and all, but I see him as Deadpool-level popular, and Deady didn't make it into the top 150. I never understood what made Hellboy so popular, and his description doesn't help.
Glad to see the Joker in as the highest rated villian. As the description goes, "The Clown Prince manages to embody everything the Dar kKnight is trying to combat: He preaches chaos over order, death over life, evil other hope. It's oen thing to embrace crmie - it's another to find human suffering downright hilarious.
Just how does Kitty Pryde make the highest rated female mutant and the third highest mutant? Storm should take that place. And why is Storm number 89? Storm is one of the most physically and mentally enduring characters in comics and I believe should be the highest rated female on the list.
Fone Bone (28) and Phoney Bone (78) from my favorite comic book series, Bone, make the list. I'm quite surprised and happy to see them here.
Luke Cage comes in at 34. Luke certianly has evolved in recent years and has become one of the top men in the Marvel Universe if you ask me, put I think he should be somewhere around the 40s or 50s.
Hawkeye at 45. Glad to see him so high-ranked. I like Hawkeye and see him as sort of a mini-Captain America (see my various posts blabbering about the sentinel of Liberty for more). Nice to see I'm not the only one who truley appreciated him after his death.
Conan the Barbarian at 35. Is he really a comic book character? Once again, having a comic book doesn't make you a comic book character, or else Homer Simpson deserves to be on this list. Also, I never liked Conan. All he does is kill things. There's no depth to him at all.
The Goon is here? He completely lacks depth, just like Conan!
Why the hell is Nightcrawler at 133? He has developed and evolved probably moreso than any other X-Men, so I believe he should be in the top 100.
Etc, etc, etc.
-
hey, where are Asterix and Captain Haddock?
How many people have actually heard of Asterix
-
wow. AP has a dedicated comics section now? ive been gone too long…

You've only been here since 2006 while this thread has been here since 2005.

You obviously haven't read The Goon.

I oughta ban you for that one SANDAI MERA

Well this is a bitch, apparently Marvel are delaying these 2 series again-
Giant Size Astonishing X-Men: Late May
Runaways 30: Mid JuneAstonishing doesn't bother me much, but for fuck's sake I want this damn Runaways arc to finish already.

xman! Very good to see another OAer still exists.
-
@Sandai:

I was being sarcastic. The list lacks of credibility, the Wolverine argument doesn't work for me at all. Although I love Spider-Man more than any other living person on this planet, I think - total clinical - Superman belongs on #1, because he's probably the only comic character on the world everybody knows. He's a giant style icon and an important aspect in american history.
-
I found me a big collection of Goon comics, gonna read them and see what the appeal is.
Gonna also go read a The Spirit TPB. -

hey bucc! likewise yo. it looks like you've moved up since the last time i was here. so
so, is anyone reading up on the secret invasion?

hundreds .

Yeah, I bet.
Bought SI#2, New Avengers#40, and Mighty Avengers#13 (the store didn't have MA#12). Finally, an issue of MA without thought bubbles of what the person says before they say it. That got pretty annoying after the first 490,346,915 times.
But still, MA#12 is pretty drull. Lookie, the new Howling Commandos: made-up of a bunch of characters never seen before in comicdom.
Maybe we'll get a mini-series of who these new guys are so maybe I can actually grow to care for them.
-
Are any of those Frank Miller batman comics any fun?? There was one in the library and only got to skim through it.

Lots unfortunately half of that ain't positive.

How many people drew a picture of Vivi & Kohza making love that incurred the typing wrath of a handful of forum members.

"Dark Knight Returns" one of Miller's most notorious works.

What about the question? I really enjoyed him in the Justice League show and was wondering what stuff was good.
What is Sandai Mera anyway?

You want a good Batman story? Read Killing Joke or either of the two Batman series done by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale.

Question as in the guy with no face?
Well first off, the character in the show is alot funnier than the character in the comics. The one in the show has a bit more in common with Watchmen's Rorshach than with the original Question. That being said, the character in the comics is still really fun and has had some great stories.
DC is releasing the original series in trades now, the first one came out a few months ago. It was called "Zen and Violence" and the second one is due this summer.
There was a mini series in 2005 by Vietch and Edwards, but it was kinda just "meh." It had gorgeous art but the story wasn't too great.
The Question is featured as a main character in the EPIC and AWESOME maxi series 52 (which is available in trades, all 4 volumes are out already) and without spoiling anything, the character goes through quite the big change during this series. (But don't worry, it's a great story and incredibly well written)
And there was a recent Question mini series called "Crime Bible: 5 Lessons of Blood" and that was REALLY good too. Greg Rucka did a great job with the character, but DO NOT read this until after you've read at least 52. The trade of this mini should be coming out soon.
Rumors are in the air of a new on going starring the Question, after the last mini did so well, but nothing has been officially stated.
-
You seem quite the authority of The Question. I liked him in JLU, my only exposure to the character.
I think I finally made up my mind on the worst moment of SI#2.
Vision: I am really your greatest arch-nemesis, The Void. Being your greatest enemy, you can trust me in all honesty and believe me when I say this isn't an obvious ploy, that everything here is your fault.
Sentry: Do not want!
I know the Sentry is mentally fucked up, but this is overdoing it.
-
@AWB:
I know the Sentry is mentally fucked up, but this is overdoing it.
Did you not read the first mini? It's nothing but this. The Void's trickery comes with the package. Bob is truly insane.
Anyway, SI#2 was cool, I'm calling it:
! Bobbi is a Skrull, I don't care what she says. If Skrulls can replicate super powers, they can certainly replicate memories. The latest New Avengers further proves it.
-
I know he's plum loco, but the way he was written in SI#2 makes him look downright stupid and naive.
-
Like I said, read the first mini. And you can't judge the writing considering he's in like three panels in this issue.
-
I've read both series so I'm well acquantied with his relationship to the Void.
-

Seconded, if anything
! Clint should just use her to counter the Skrulls invasion
BTW Nova 13 is also out; GALACTUS BABY!BTW DeadPool will have a SI series in September written by Way.

sadly, i dont believe that will happen. clint's been a broken man since his return. it seems like hes looking for something to attach himself to, and with skrulls of the 2 people that he used to care the most about out there, he might end up believing any lie they tell him.
! he was willing to believe in "cap" simply because he blocked an arrow that he shot. that doesnt bode well for him.
-
I bought all of the Marvel books this week, and like 3 of them worked for me. SI was not one of them. But maybe I'm just sore that I didn't get Vision back. Mighty #12 was good, but #13 was a bit silly. Garbage kids with C list parents unite. Who the fuck had a kid with the Griffin? ASM was the worst, though.
! The Mockingbird thing pisses me off, because it's still just part of the guessing game. Okay, she knows you spilled margarita on her costume at a Christmas party, she's still most likely a Skrull. How the hell do you retcon her death with aliens? And yet, if she isn't back, then that means nothing happened in this issue except the NY invasion. Didn't Bendis say the "he's a Skrull/ she's back" stuff would be in the first few issues?
-
Bah Cap is dead, and besides that shield of his could be made from any alien alloy to simulate the properties of the one Bucky has. Anyway I read some more stuff-
Nova #13-
! So Surfer is back working for Galactus now? Did that happen during Annihilation?
My guess is that Galactus wants to consume that planet cuz of that evil entity thing.
Still a great issue, Rider is quickly becoming one of my fav. Marvel charactersX-Factor: The Quick and the dead-
! Great one-shot too, guess like Xavier Quicksilver's 'reborn' again and is gonna do better with his life. I haven't read X-Factor since Messiah CompleX, but this issue was fun.
Both were great so give them a read ;)

it all feels like its going to wrap up in a massive clusterfk. the mass of superskrulls(which do look pretty awesome, minus wolverclops) attacking new york which will make super teams come out to save the day, only to have their own betray them and get beat down, and have a new breed of heroes come out to save the day. this sorta feels like that dc bloodlines mini series over a decade ago. whats annoying is that all this series has going for it is the whos a skrull/whos real angle. and that part with the vision… not really convincing of being the real vision, especially not with that fking smirk at the end
-
I still have hope. We're going to to through a few more rounds of "Oh I'm a Skrull! Haha, not really. But yeah, I am" before this is done with, and I hope in the end we have the real Vision back.
-
Bucc, did you read Invincible Iron Man? I've heard nothing but good for that (while Viva Las Vegas is supposidly crappy). I think I need one more good review before I pick Invincible up.
-
If you can tolerate the coloring (poor Stephane died while working on this book) and the slight cheese aroma coming off the new villain, then yeah. It was pretty good, and very unlike most first issues, but probably because it's a second title.
-
Ah, so not everyone is picking daisies and running through fields of flowers for the new book I see.
I downloaded the new Thunderbolts: Reason in Madness since I've also heard nothing but praise for it. Will post a review soon.
-
Review of the new Thunderbolts one shot.
Bump the price down to a penny and this still isn't worth your money. Everyone loves this because Norman Osborne really shows that he's not a man to be messed with. So frigging what, I say. We already know he's not a man to be messed with if you know anything about his history. So the story goes that Venom, on a mission, is offered a deal to turn Norman over to some old cronies of his. The villains want a couple million from Norman's account as well as dirt on his past to use against him. But Venom plays the role of double agent, tells Norman of the villains' plan, and Norman takes care of it. The end. It's also really short.
DO NOT BUY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES
-
@AWB:
I bought Wizard #200 today, which featured a list of the top 200 comic book characters of all time. How the fuck does Rorschach outrank Captain America? I mean, Captain America is an idol to even the strongest, bravest, and most noble of superheroes. He is the very definition of exisiting to inspire. Yet he comes n at number 7. I'm not saying he's number 1 (Wizard choose Wolverine for that, and the reasons why are kind WTFish. They treat him like he's Johnny Carson) but he deserves to be in the top 5.
Also, Iron Man movie director Jon Favreau will be releasing an Iron Man comic this week called Iron Man : Viva Las Vegas. Since I loved his work on the movie, I am going to look into it.
because it is Wizard and Wizard is usually like that
but I do agree with them about the Rosarch Cap bit

and you've named one of the many reasons i hate the new thunderbolts team. you get a bunch of villains that without consequences would end up killing each other led by a man that has no problem taking down anyone from his team. being seen as jokes by the big leagues(nova spidey), and getting their asses handed to them by damn near unknowns(american eagle vs bullseye was bullshit, even though bullseye deserved the beating) is another problem. Zemo needs to come back and take back leadership.
-
Well we have very different tastes. I personally prefer the new Thunderbolts. Then again, Warren Ellis is probably the sole reason I like them. I'll probably stop reading when he leaves unless the new writer lives up to to Ellis.
