I only use milk for my cereal. I never drink it by itself. Blah. But I HAVE to have my cereal for breakfast in the mornings.
Where are other good sources for calcium?

ice cream. cheese. yogurt. I think I heard of some veggies with calcium in them.

I'm back to where I was before I went to the Puyallup fair two weeks ago.
I mean, DAMN, fair food. That's where they really get ya.
I'm kind of glad that it went back down so fast - it had taken a while to get there in the beginning. Though, now I'm a little worried I'll gain it back again somehow or other since it was easier this time.
I have these stretches I need to do from the chiropractor though that I need to start doing regularly, and I'm hoping they can help firm some areas up as well as help keep me limber.
Now to work on the next ten pounds … ah, shit, Thanksgiving, and Christmas is coming up.
Too much sun exposure = SKIN CANCER. Remember that when you're out in the sun turning into a lobster. YOU CAN DIE FROM IT. I am sooo glad I'm not obsessed with tanning or doing Tanning Beds x_x;; I've read SOO MANY HORROR stories about them holy moly..
Unless you live in a warm country, it's pretty hard to get too much sun exposure. However, you don't have to have long term expose to tanning beds to become a walking horror story. Tanning looks fucking horrible after it's gone beyond 'light tan'. Not to mention the wrinkling skin that comes with the package. Worst thing is, tan-obsessed women don't even realize it until it's far too late. My sister has a pretty dark tan from lying in the sun all summer and she still keeps whining about how she 'looks too pale' and should go to a tanning salon.
Meanwhile she's getting bigger and bigger and doesn't want to do any kind of physical excercise (or even get her huge ass off the couch instead of telling family members to 'go get her tea now').
Man Teach, that sucks x_x;; I'm not even fond of tan people or tanning in general. I see like.. soccer moms come into my store and it's just.. SOO SAD how hard they're trying to be young by caking on the make-up and going to tanning salons shakes head just sad. I'll take my white sheet skin over their nasty sun baked skin ANY DAY.
And since you mentioned Ice Cream CU, I'd like to point out that if I ate Ice cream EVERY DAY to get my calcium, I'd be soo damn fat I'd never leave my house again. EVER. Cheese is a good source of calcium..but..it's soo fatty x_x;;
I don't eat cereal every morning so I don't get milk that way, I usually eat a banana at work then when I get off work I come home, maybe make a sandwich, then have a glass of milk with it. That's where I get my daily milk intake mostly. Somedays I don't drink any at all xD
ice cream. cheese. yogurt. I think I heard of some veggies with calcium in them.

But all those dairy products are made with the milk that was processed and boiled and infused with hormones, so you're not going to get any good calcium out of those either.
Sun is vital for maintaining levels of vitamin D, so its good to have in moderation, like most other things. Sunscreen is your friend. Thats a big part of the big reason why most adults now are deficient in Vitamin D, with the fear of sun cancer causing people to avoid the sun almost entirely.
Since human's walked the earth, for thousands of years they toiled and worked all freakin day in the sun, but they weren't getting skin cancers because they used common sense and covered themselves up, even in ancient times people understood the effects of getting too much sun.
The only reason it is an issue nowadays is because we walk around half naked (or almost totally) in the heat of summer, when UV rays are at their highest. People don't use their common sense anymore to wear protective clothing or atleast use sunscreen. That and the obsession with tanning.
If people would just use common sense and cover up/wear sunscreen and not use tanning beds this would not be an issue, as sun exposure does play a vital part in health.
Going back to milk, Braums milk is actually hormone free. It's supposed to be without the bad chemicals that take the nutrients out of milk. The downside of this of course, is it decreases shelf life without the preservatives (but honestly people dealt with shit going bad fast for thousands of years, it can be put up with again if you want to feel good), and honestly, it doesn't taste that great to drink by itself. It's ok, and it tastes just fine in cereal or other foods but I'm not a big fan of drinking it by itself, but I hardly ever desire to just drink a glass of milk so it's not too much of an issue.
As for other calcium sources, the only thing I've been told that the body can naturally absorb are the calcium supplements like Caltrate and Calcitrate or whatever its called.
i had milk with my tea at work today.
That can't be true, then none of our ancestors would have gotten calcium. I'm a firm believer everything we need can be found in our food.
amen sister.
but arie was saying the prossessing the milk and milk products goes through, gets rid of some of the calcium, where as they didn't do stuff like pasteurize milk back in the day. hell, they didn't even refrigerate it. I could see that.
@Ms:
That can't be true, then none of our ancestors would have gotten calcium. I'm a firm believer everything we need can be found in our food.
But our ancestors did not process their food, add man made preservatives and hormones to improve shelf like and make a quick buck, and food was not mass produced. It is definitely quantity over quality now a days.
Yes we should be able to get our food from natural sources, but unfortunately it's not something we can buy in a store. Sadly lots of food marked organic or natural is not completely natural. Very very very very very few things, if any sold in the grocery store nowadays are 100% natural and not tampered with. So many "natural" foods are tampered with so they will last longer or to kill bacteria.
That's why supplements are vitamins are juice/veggie drinks are popping up right and left, there isn't much we can buy off the shelf that will give us the nutrients we need to maintain our health.
There are so many extreme differences between the way we live now then the people of past centuries, there is no comparison.
Even our health has become a heartless tool for making money, it's a sad sad time we are in.
True processing does take stuff out, but I don't believe that some vitamin supplements are the only way to get calcium. Just saying.
I myself take Juice Plus (or will start up again after I'm off my medication in one more month.) I love the stuff, because I don't eat enough fruits and veggies. I could care less though if something is organic. I guess I'm way to thrifty to spend extra on something like that. I will say I'm not big on the growth hormones they give to Dairy cows. I think it is cruel to the cow, and all those are passed on to us. That's why I believe little girls are maturing way too fast (getting breast and starting their periods at 9 or 10.)
Braums milk is wonderful. I LOVE Braums. That was the first place I took CU to when I picked her up from the airport. LOL
I HATE BRAUMS ==;; I dunno about their milk, but HELL their milkshakes are the NASTIEST things on the PLANET.. SICK SICK FUCKING SICK. That is all. I'm sure their other stuff is great, but they'll NEVER get my business again after that shake I got ==;; YUUUUUUUUUCK.
I know organic is supposed to be soo good and soo much better for you..but..honestly..I'd LOVE to eat healthier just as much as the next fatass, but I can't afford to spend extra money on organic stuffs, even if they are better for you.
I used to take Juice Plus but I'm so bad at remembering to take these things…@_@
The supplements are to help get adequate calcium. You need to drink 8 glasses of milk to get your d/v of calcium, and I have no idea how much cheese you'd have to eat but I'd guess it would be a few blocks... neither of which are a particularly good idea o.o
LOL I don't think Braums milkshakes are tasty either. I don't know why when everything else they have is so delicious o.o;;;
I forgot to watch it but something just popped up on the news about some of the veggies and foods we get we think are good for us are actually making people sick/not that healthy. They showed celery and eggs on the preview o.o;;;
I don't care if eggs are bad for you and give you cancer. I FUCKING LOVE EGGS
I had a nutritionist tell me that eggs are good for you. I'll trust her over some hyped up news story.
I'm sorry you guys had bad shakes…but my most favorite thing in the whole world is a mint chocolate shake from Braums. It's heavenly. Or I will get a double dip cone, mint chocolate chip on the bottom and peppermint on the top. All ice cream pales in comparison (except perhaps Breyers)
Well I didn't watch it so I have no idea what was on there exactly, those were just the pictures they showed. I'm not waiting for the stupid website on this dial-up to load to try to find the page/can't watch the video anyway.
Eggs are good for you, but I can imagine too much of them isn't good as everything else is. Of course, most people don't eat these foods in excess to where they are bad for you anyway.
Eggs have protein in them, but not a huge amount, so probably eating
TONS of eggs daily to get your protein fix is probably not a good thing.
A lot of these "bad for you" articles most of the time address something that people are eating in excess, not that it's bad for you in general (when it comes to fruits/veggies). There are tons of people OCD about what they eat they will overindulge in certain foods. Like drinking a gallon of milk a day, throwing 10 eggs in a protein shake, etc. etc. But again it is a news story you should always take with a grain of salt.
Lol I always thought Braums was the best til I had Marble Slab, that stuff was cracktastical. Still haven't had Cold Stone, Ben & Jerry's, or Baskin Robins to really compare to though =X
Edit: I'm not telling anyone what they should or shouldn't eat so I hope no one is misunderstanding. Since my grandma's been eating differently for her cancer, I've read/watched/been lectured to about nutrition stuff that it's totally changed my view on everyhing @_@ I totally had the wrong idea about stuff before lol.
you guys should all go watch the documenrty food inc.
also, cool. i actually went to that store. :) next time I wanna try this milk.
I think of Braums as your everyday Oh I feel like Ice Cream but not spend a lot place..
Marble Slab and Cold Stone is like a heavenly treat that is for special occasions. They've got coconut ice cream. I mix it with walnuts. MMM
Neko and Charli got me a "tropical priest" gelato from Central Market. That was amazing. BTW Tropical Priest is what we named my favorite con drink of Pineapple Fanta and coconut rum. LOL
Yeah eggs are good for you, just not too much because of the cholesterol in them. I'd eat at least 2.
And LOL at the Tropical Priest. The best mixed drink ever! XD
lol thats probably what the story was about, cholesterol raising foods.
Damn I want Braums now, but its way too far away from here DX Dairy Queen ice cream is low fat, but almost $4 for a small Blizzard is outrageous. I'd rather get the $2 double dip. Blah Sonic being the only other choice… I haven't had much ice cream this year ;_;
Lost a bit more weight.
Now to work on the rest of it.
I keep intending to go out walking to one of the closer by stores, but it never really happens. I don't really need anything from any of them, so I don't feel any pressing urge to walk there.
ah, i was gonna mention, usually, after a day of work, i have just over 5000 steps on my pedometer. after walking around Toronto for 12 hours on saterday, I got 25 000 steps. my dad figures that's around 9 miles.
I don't trust those things. No matter how you shake it, it thinks you've taken a step.
o-o i lost 50 lbs by doing a carb diet. 15 carbs a day- basically eat chicken and some vegetables like celery and crap like that.. no dairy. Water for drinks.. o-o i lost that in like less than a month and have kept it off since then. :x… like 10-15 a week i lost. o-o if you want to know anymore then uh.. Yeeee.
That's ridiculously unhealthy, and all around bad for you.
I didn't get any of that. You were on a carb diet, yet you only ate chicken and vegetables? What's with the '15 carbs a day'? The only thing I can think of when the word 'carb' is used in a sentence like that, is this:
Basically. Itsthe southbeach diet.
You only eat 15 carbs a day.
It's not unhealthy.
Count your carbs- chicken and stuff like that- meats. have 0 carbs basically, so you can eat as much as that. Vegetables have a bit of carbs - so you watch that in your diet by eating some greens a day. Drink water. o-o nothing unhealthy about it. Fish, chicken, steak, etc. that isnt at all bad for your system cause you get all your whatever in their on a daily basis. theres more to it, im just giving the basic thing right there. plus working out helps alot too. o-o thats why i lost as much as i did because i worked out like everyday. but my sister did it without working out and it was like.. 8lbs the first week and like 5 every week after. you do the 15-20 carbs a day for two weeks. and then you can start introducing other stuff like yogurt or other things into your diet. and its all about portion sizse as well.
if you dont want to go through all of that the other best method of weight loss is
Portion sizes- snacking on little things throughout the day so you dont eat so much at dinner or lunch. and cutting sodas and juices out of your drinks- and you will definately see some results.
Losing weight that fast
is ridiculously unhealthy.
no not really, when you are alot bigger than the average size and dont do alot of strong movements in your daily routine the lbs come off really fast.
I mean, if it was unhealthy would they show shows like : The biggest loser. or Dance your ass off?
People go as much as losing like 20 lbs a week or maybe even more. its about your body size and the amount of work you do a day.
Theres nothing wrong with eating alot of healthy foods to be healthy- that makes no sense. o-o so. Case solved.
@dirt:
Losing weight that fast
is ridiculously unhealthy.
why? What are the health risks of losing weight fast? What can be considered 'fast'?
During M-F I've been keeping to my 1600 calorie diet, eating vegetarian every other day and getting enough healthy foods in to make onlookers judge me XD I don't feel like it today because I just got dumped yesterday and I want to die, but I've been working out 90-120 minutes a day, switching between cardio and weight days.
@Usopp:

A few pounds a week is considered healthy.
Not dropping 10-15 in a week.
@D3liri0us:

I've never watched these shows, but I can guess that the competitors are all probably under close observation, and fed good healthy stuff while they're losing weight. Even then, it sounds really dangerous.
@D3liri0us:

Yeah, nothing wrong when it's to be healthy.
If you really lost this weight, I hope you went to a doctor first or soon afterward to make sure everything's all right. Also, if this wasn't too long ago, "keeping it off" doesn't mean much unless it's been about a year or so, and you've really kicked off bad habits.
Bah I need to get on a harder regimine >_> I know I don't work out long or hard enough usually.
Got some protein powder stuff, and I might try drinking two a day instead of one and see if that will help me eat less. Eat a good breakfast and drink one, eat a very healthy lunch, and eat a bit for dinner if I need to and drink another one.
I've found out about the thyroid problem but I need to double check again when I go back to the doctor (though its not till the beginning of December DX I need to lose weight liek now) about looking into the appetite issue. The last couple days have been fine, but most of the time I have days where I'm just starving constantly around mid afternoon (even if I had a big breakfast and lunch) and not even mass amounts of protein can sedate my hunger. I'm hoping if I can get 60 grams a day it'll behave but this bothers me XP
0-0.. Yes I kept it off for 4 years now.. And yes o-o I went before and after this diet and was fine both times. - and all times after . >_>…...kayyy

Yeah, I was going to say that you don't look big in your myspace photos at all. Usually, people dropping 10-15 pounds a weight are either huge, or they gain it back very quickly. Bravo on keeping it off, sista!!
lol @captain usopp - I'm 20 years young …and still living da 'Rock 'N Roll' lifestyle when my parents go on vacation.

.
I was actually reading ur spat about the cosplayers today n that's why I joined hahaha interesting

man how long ago did I ask that. I even forget why I asked. but omg, your only 20. i thought you were older.
I signed up for that online yoga thing, and was actually gonna excersize, which I never do, and someone was hogging the freaking bandwidth here last night. I can't do yoga when the video stops every 5 seconds for 20 seconds at a time. not to menchion that's not very calming. more like annoying. fuuuuu
I'll try this morning when everyone is still asleep/leaving
Fuck, people here are having spicey Thai food.
I can SMELLS the spicey …
Ah, well. At least I stocked up on snacks. I'm trying a new treat too - dried apricots. They're nummy, and not hard and gum hurting like apricots usually are for me.
@dirt:

Not dropping 10-15 in a week.

@Usopp:
Why is it unhealthy?
It's a very drastic change for your body, you give it no time to get used to the new weight. I think losing weight a bit more slowly is better so your organs have a bit of time to adapt to the new food intake… or something like that. I'm no doctor :ninja:
Unless you know what you are doing and know how to maintain your body during such a drastic period, then yes normally dropping 10-20 pounds a week is a shock to the system. A lot of people get that way by starvation, which of course if you starve yourself that thin your body will go into shock and you'll get an almost uncontrollable appetite and it leads to binge eating, which also is way unhealthy for you.
Plus if it leads to binging, that 10 pounds you lost one week can come back in a couple of days.
But it doesn't pose any short term health risk. It also depends on how fat the person in question is.
There are diets they use in the hospital for really obese patiences needing bypass or other heart surgeries that allows them to drop 10-15 pounds in 5 days, then you go back to normal eating for a couple of days and can do it again.
There can be short term risk if you have underlying medical conditions.
But there are ways to drop the weight that fast but they're mostly done under medical supervision.
I've got some of those diets on a piece of paper somewhere, though I gave up because dry toast and grapefruit for breakfast would make me want to vomit.
Diets never work on the long term anyway. That's why they're called diets.
If you follow a diet that was given to you by a nutriologist (is this the word for it in english?), it is permanent. They teach how to eat properly and mix vegetables, meats, and everything else in appropriate quantities. As long as you follow the rules there's no reason for it not be permanent, and you can still forget the "diet" every once in a while without consequences.

so much of this is missing in this thread
The diet you have now should be one you plan to follow for the rest of your life - or long term. Dropping carbs entirely or protein entirely or anything entirely for the long term can have a huge impact on your body. What people just need to do is just eat the healthy stuff in the RIGHT portions, and you shouldn't have to worry.
Carry those little snacks around if you get hungry, make lunch so you don't eat out when you don't need to, and GET UP AND MOVE.
Also, I finally have a reason to go to those stores now.
but i'm not carrying a giant bag of catfood that far, so i got to take my car
Also eating high quantities of protein with little to no carbs can do damage to your kidneys and renal system, not to mention raise bad cholesterol.
It is good to eat a wide variety of things, lean meats and fish, lots of fruits and veggies, and good whole grain. Don't be afraid to splurge. It's ok to treat yourself to ice cream, or chocolate every once in a while.
@Usopp:

I'm not part of this conversation, but this post really worried me. Losing even 10 pounds a week is unhealthy. The people on a show like The Biggest Loser only manage to get those kinds of numbers because they're working out almost full time every day, and start out at morbidly obese levels, so it's easier for their bodies to drop 10 lbs out of 400 rather than someone dropping 10 out of 200. Plus they've got people monitoring their condition and controlling what they eat.
I always heard rapid weight loss is bad because it shocks your system, especially if it's a starvation diet. It can be hard on your heart, bad for your skin and hair and generally make you feel like crap. When your body's burning its fat stores, you're not getting any vitamins/minerals that you need from the fat alone.
Here's some backup as to why rapid weight loss is bad for you:
from WebMD:
Gallstones, which occur in 12% to 25% of people losing large amounts of weight over several months.
Dehydration, which can be avoided by drinking plenty of fluids.
Malnutrition, usually from not eating enough protein for weeks at a time.
Electrolyte imbalances, which rarely can be life threatening.
Headaches
Irritability
Fatigue
Dizziness
Constipation
From eHow:
According to the Mayo Clinic, a slow rate of loss–-1 to 2 lbs. per week---is ideal for long-term weight maintenance. Losing more than 2 lbs. each week can possibly lead to significant health problems and other risks. And then they list some problems:
Gallbladder Problems and Heart Conditions
Dehydration and Malnutrition
Loose Skin and Muscle Loss
.> I concur. Jesus, no one needs to lose that much in a week. Take up a sport and slowly adjust week by week. It's like running, you don't do 26 miles off the bat. You start small and keep climbing. As you go higher you'll be losing the necessary weight. >.> I've taken sports most of my life , so at least I know what i'm talking about for myself.
I'd just like to know what I can do besides run because I have asthma Dx sometimes even brisk walking gets me to a point I need to take a puff on my inhaler x___x; I would LOVE TO RUN SO MUCH… sometimes I run to the mail box and then have to rest when I get back inside for a few minutes... xD I know you people aren't like health nuts or know everything I just wish I could get to a point where running or even jogging was an option I really HATE that I can't breath sometimes and Im really not THAT overweight x__x;
I'm hoping it'll quit raining so my sis and i can GO WALKING GOD I wanna go so bad I'm almost willing to do it even if I get sick in the rain Dx I feel so lazy... like a bear in hibernation... damn rain!
