I hope it's better than 148, i coudldn't beleive it when they never explained the constant 'Usopp' joke, as bad as it is to say, even Balf or was it HK done that, oh well bar that the qualities sublime :)
i thought they did explaion it? they said the story of norland the lair. in the straw hats, usopp is the liar. but luffy as simple minded as he is, kept thinking the story is refering to usopp.
note: liar in japanese sounds nearly the same as usopp. reason?the name usopp is actually an pun for liar

Although, I find this one a good episode overall, I prefer the next part, due to the fight between Cricket, Shoujo and Masira, and the Bellamy Group.
Most of the few episodes involving Cricket are pretty good, and I find him a cool character, however, I think it was slightly unfair for them to get beat up so badly… even if they do manage to repair and make huge moderations to the Going Merry, all night long.
The scene with the small friendly gathering is great, the adventure in the woods is pretty fun, as is the noise the Southbird makes. Quite frightening, really. Sanji and Nami's fear of insects and Usopp's handling of the spider make for a good comparison of how different people, without considering strength, can be afraid of certain things that don't scare others. I'm of course talking about the phobia of insects, and Usopp being regarded as a weak fighting force.
Somehow, I just got the feeling this episode... despite the obvious need for a Southbird, could be deemed filler. As I put it, this was really just a comedy episode, all in all. There's a lot of laughs, and the scene in which Usopp questions Cricket is quite powerful, somehow.. but frankly, I find the story of Cricket's ancestry quite depressing. And the closing scene in which Bellamy refers to himself as Hyena is quite blunt, yet, has an air of cool about it. Shoujo and Masira's confidence is pretty amusing, too.. but I just noticed how you can actually see Shoujo's hairy ape nipples, through this closing scene.
So... I felt the need to discuss this episode, somehow. So sue me. I figured that's what this thread was for, somehow?**
It's true that there isn't a whole lot of stuff other than exposition going on in this episode, although it is amusing. The animation was exceptionally bad, though. :)

I dunno'. A few moments seemed to be a little bad, but.. I felt the same after watching the first entrance into Mock Town, most of the background characters are extremely poorly animated.
The moments I found bad, during Usopp's confrontation of Cricket, are when Shoujo and Masira appear out of each window, waving their arms, and then stay stationary for about five minutes, whilst Zorro stares at them with his back turned to the camera… and, oh, the random still shots of Zorro, just... well, looking. They get used two or three times, with no real point at all.
Eh, well. I suppose when you have a show in syndication, you have to make do with the budget. Toei Animation, especially... who tend to re-use a lot of footage. This was seen to best effect during Hokuto No Ken, in which they'd re-use the footage of the random biker thugs exploding, and have countless flashbacks… even full episodes with about two minutes of new animation, and flashbacks from previous episodes.
Put it this way, it could be worse. =P
Yeah, well, the quality goes up and down. There are some episodes in which there is actually really good animation, particularly in the more recent episodes in Japan. The more important moments get the better animators and directors.
Another scene in 149 that was really bad was about 13 minutes in, when Cricket was talking about the ringing of the bell. Look at the way the characters are moving. XD

Yeah, get used to the horrid animation. It continues to suck all the way until the beggining of the G4 Marine Filler Arc after Skypiea. -_- Very dissapointing seeing as the Skypiea arc has imo one of the greatest stories in OP.

I've said this before, but.. they can only do so much with a budget, especially with a syndicated animated series, too.
So, would you consider the entire series up until the G4 Marine Base Filler to be poorly animated, then? - I'm still just catching up with the animÃ

That is disappointing, I had hoped Skypiea would have good animation. I've been warned about it before, though. I guess it's hard to keep the quality consistent particularly with such a long arc. Thankfully it does get a lot better after that.
As for the budget, you'd think that with all the money One Piece makes for Toei, it would be pretty high…but maybe that's why the animation did improve eventually. Think they can afford to spend a little more? :)
Oh, btw, I thought it was funny that Nami was trying to get Robin drunk in that one scene in 149...hmmmm XD
