Whoa what's this? I really think that hands down the most INFLUENTIAL Manga is Dragon Ball. I didn't say greatest, cause if one wants to call that title to a manga they must first read evey single manga and then form an opinion. Imo I call Dragon Ball the most influental since it opened all doors to manga for me. It made me see other mangas and anime from Japan and since then all these mangas I've seen today seem to take an element of Dragon Ball. Its goes to show how much Dragon Ball impacted everyone from Oda to Kubo to even Sawai, yes I said Sawai. Even Oda said that without Dragon Ball there might not even be a One Piece. That's my thoughts though. Feel free to point out flaws in my opinion.
What is the Greatest Manga of all time? (not a popularity contest)

-
It's called Homunculous. It's pretty good. The main character is poor, living in his car and he meets a guy who will pay him if he's allowed to drill a hole in the man's skull to test a hypothesis of his. It allows the main character to see homunculous.
-
How someone can rank One Piece first while saying Dragon Ball is shit is completely beyond me. It may be better than Dragon Ball but dismissing its roots is disrespectful and retarded.
Dragonball"s root was Hokuto no ken, nobody mentioned that. Compared to the shonen series nowadays DB is crap.
-
Dragon Ball was ok, Dragon Ball Z on the other hand>.>
-

I thought It was Journey To The West, Astro Boy and Disney's 101 Dalmations? I guess Goku really didn't have a magical cloud, a pole that extends and a tail of a monkey.
-
I don't see how you can get DB from Hokuto no Ken.
-
Dragonball"s root was Hokuto no ken, nobody mentioned that.
Probably because it's not true.
Compared to the shonen series nowadays DB is crap.
-
Obviously Konjiki no Gash Bell.
-
Dragonball"s root was Hokuto no ken, nobody mentioned that.
It wasn't. How stupid can you get?
Compared to the shonen series nowadays DB is crap.
Yes, because Naruto and Bleach leave it in the dust. Please stop posting.

There's something about people making little kids fight that makes me uneasy…

Little demon kids! And so cute!

That..actually sounds really interesting. I think I'll check it out.

@robbybevard:
Hikaru no Go is not my favorite, but I give it points for getting me to learn how to play the game and be interested in it. Thats quite the achievement. Thus…
Hikaru no Go is the Greatest Manga of All Time... to motivate people to learn and play Go.
I have to admit.. After reading Hikaru no Go.. I did want to learn to play Go T_T
(I failed too..)
Dragonball is a good manga.. but I wouldn't say the greatest :)
We all have our own tastes though..lol@naruto
One Piece forum -> One Piece lovers -> One Piece is awesome

MUST I REPEAT MYSELF?!

That's a tough sell.

MUST I REPEAT MYSELF?!
If you were referring to me, I was not referring to you (I just read your post from the quote too.. Just expressing how I believe One Piece is the greatest (though I'm biased cause I love One Piece )
Though I guess I could have wrote something like "all the ones listed are good, but not the greatest except one piece" or something, but everyone was making a big deal out of dragon ball so yeah -
Fuck. I just finished reading all of Homunculus, that's out, and sldkfjsld it's really really good. A good blend of creepy and mystery and interesting characters. Nice. Makes my top five list. Which still has Konjiki no Gash Bell at the top, along with One Piece, and Claymore.
-
You read Homunculus because I was talking about it? I feel so important .
-
1. One Piece
2. Baccano!
2. Evangelion
2. Gintama
2. Mushi-Shi -

I love One Piece too I actually think it's got a way better storyline than Dragonball Z. But One Piece is already kicking DB's ass in the longevity section, it's also why I enjoy it more cause Oda actually enjoys his work while Toriyama just wants to get everything Dragon Ball related over with.
-
I cannot also choose a greatest since they're all great in my opinion:
One Piece,Dragon Ball,Bobobo and Yu-Gi-Oh. -
1. One Piece
2. Berserk
3. Monster
4. Death Note
5. HxH…I either did not read or did not like the rest listed here...
-
^ You like Death Note more than HXH? Death Note was okay, I guess I just didn't exeptionally well. It seemed sort of over dramatic and I guess that took away from it.
-
I wouldn't yet say that One Piece is the Greatest Manga of all time. That title could be it's after the series is completed. It still has time to take a downhill roll for the worse. Just look at Naruto.
As of right now, imo, I would say that Dragon Ball is teh Greatest Manga of all time. It seems to have had a greater influence on people and is hailed as such.
-
@Kairouseki:

It had an overall greater impact on me, that's all…
HxH was great during the Ryodan Arc and good during the Hunter Exam, but the rest was really lackluster, especially Greed Island...
They are both really good and really close, Death Note just wins for being more consistently good...(not that it also did not have a downturn during the Yotsuba Arc)
-
How did you not like Greed Island  !? For me HXH has been consistently good. Greed Island was probably my least favorite arc but it was still extremely good. And the arc after it is a lot better. The art is sometimes bad and the delays can get really annoying, but, at least for me, HXH is extremely awesome.

I disagree. HxH has been good stuff pretty much the whole time. Death Note's second half sucked period.

I just didn't…what's so weird about that. Maybe it was too big of a plunge after the extremely good Ryodan Arc that came before it. Maybe my expectations had gotten pretty high. The Arc after it has been too long and has taken too many hiatuses and still no end in sight...that's why I can't exactly speak positively about it...
I disagree. HxH has been good stuff pretty much the whole time. Death Note's second half sucked period.
Good for you…only one question - so what? You think this way, I think differently.
HxH had some pretty boring moments - like the whole Killua rescue arc and the aforementioned Greed Island and Chimera Ant arcs. The only time it kept me at the edge of my seat was during the Roydan Arc...
Death Note did that much more for me both in the first and the second part. The only weak part was the middle.
What's the big deal anyway - they are both great manga to make it to my top 5 list. What's with the Death Note hate? It's not the best thing to come on earth like some people claim, but it certainly isn't bad!

maybe all that Z shit ruined everything before it for him?
-
You can still think that DB is better than Naruto, however I disagree. Naruto has better plot, better characters, it is more emotional etc…., despite the fact that it is becoming shit lately.

I much as I dislike the DragonBall manga it's kind of weird seeing someone actually say Naruto is better than it.

I must have missed that.
better characters,
And that.
it is more emotional etc….,
Reading it certainly make me emotional.
The emotion is equal parts anger, pity and contempt.
despite the fact that it is becoming shit lately.
Five years is lately now?

Its my personal opinion. I find Dragonball boring and unvaried, and I dont care if it inspired a lot of manga shonen writers (including Oda).

Please explain what you find boring about it and in which ways it is unvaried.

How is it boring and unvaried. Have you even read it? Or did you only watch the Dragon Ball Z part of the anime.
-
Come on guys, you might as well just argue with a vegetable.
-
I know, I just asked him out of curiosity.
-
Maybe he's talking about all the Tenkaichi Budokai tournaments that were in DB :ermm: ?
-
i think he just read dragonball recently - after everyone copied it
-
If you compare the Dragonball part of the series to the original Naruto, Dragonball will most certainly come up on top. It's more creative and clever, it actually uses its minor characters, and it's a lot of fun. Pre-Shippuden Naruto's not all that bad, but it's nothing spectacular at the same time. Certainly nothing compared to Dragonball.
Dragonball Z and Shippuden, the two dead horses of their perspective series, also show why Dragonball as a franchise is better. I don't think I need to explain this, as most people are willing to say DBZ was better.
-

What I find funny is that that manga is also influenced by (and some may say rip off) Dragon Ball. Even the naruto fans wouldn't hold a candle to the mighty powerhouse that is Dragon Ball. You must be one of those Narutards on YouTube that are jealous that Dragon Ball is still getting all the attention that its getting. I also find it quite funny that you did not respond to my previous post directed at you.
-
I am sorry for insulting your god mangaka , but I will say opinion anyway. I already said about the repetitive plot and the characters I didnt like, but I also found the fights boring, the battle power idea is dump, the Super Sayian transformations seem same to me, and the fusion didnt make it for me. I have to admit that there were some funny moments in the 1st part, but all in all I didnt like it. I also find the drawing style lame.
So I dont care if Dragonball inspired a lot of future mangakas, or if it was copied a lot, dont expect me to kiss Toriyama"s ass because Oda was inspired by him. What I find funny is that that manga is also influenced by (and some may say rip off) Dragon Ball. I am not, but you must be one of the guys who watched the Dragonball anime when you were 10 years old, and you are still trying to convince yourself that it is the best manga ever and that it wont be surpassed, you may read even the other shonen mangas not for fun but just to prove to yourself that Dragonball is the best manga ever….
Anyway thats my opinion, so you should keep believing in your Mangaka god.
-
Normally it would pain me deeply to read such things said against Dragonball, but seeing who's doing the insulting… meh.
-
I have wondered for a while whether I should read Dragon Ball, since everyone here seems to be praising it so much…
The thing is, I have been prejudiced against it for a while, maybe because of DBZ, and I've gotten the impression that it's all about power levels and upgrades and the formula where the hero gets his ass kicked then he trains a lot and defeats the bad guy and then a stronger bad guy appears and the whole thing starts over...
In other words, i heard it's full of shonen cliches which would have been original if I had read it 10 years ago, but now after reading all that shounen I feel like it will be dull...
I made the mistake of reading/watching Yu Yu Hakusho after being exposed to Bleach, HxH, One Piece, Naruto, etc. and it felt pretty boring by comparison...
What would you guys suggest -- is it worth the read after being exposed to all that shounen?
-

So you don't like the final two arcs of Dragon Ball that much.
Welcome to the majority of the fanbase.

I feel like saying "pucker up, buttercup."
No idea why.

Osamu Tezuka?
dump
You must feel quite at home, since kishi has been taking a lot of these on his fans recently.
-
Anyone who thinks DBZ was all about "power levels and leveling up" wasn't watching the show. Sorry, but you weren't.

I'm sorry, but I really wasn't watching the show…

That'll probably be the case unfortunately. It won't seem original, but I think you may still find it enjoyable. It's like how I was disappointed when I watched Airplane because I had already heard so many of the jokes from different sources, but I knew it must have been hella funny when it first came along.
I still recommend the first part because it doesn't really fall into the shonen cliches until much later and is much more gag oriented. Seriously good shit.
-
What was it about then?
I'm sorry, but I really wasn't watching the show…
Depends on when you watch it. Goes from protecting earth from the super-strong, "always comes through in the end" hero's very own race, to a struggle against the armies of an intergalactic tyrant, to a insanely fun chaotic hunt and struggle for Namekian Dragonballs which are constantly changing hands, to the final battle against an ubervillain that's been subtly built up for the last few sagas (as the last few "boss" characters were, in one way or another, his fault). Then there's the prevention of an apocalyptic future, the hunt for a sneaky genetic mutant, fighting to prevent said mutant from evolving, that mutant's tournament and subsequent self-revelation that he is the living apocalypse…
Much of Dragonball, during the "Z" era, was just as story-driven as the old days, just with a way bigger emphasis on fighting. The struggle for the Namekian Dragonballs, the hunt for Cell, etc. all had nothing to do with power levels (which were strictly a plot point in the Freeza saga that were proven to be unreliable, anyway. It went toward the whole premise of "the evil villains are trying to cement the heroes in a 'place,' while their spirit and force of will defies their grey numbers and caste system.") or powering up. DBZ had those things, but they were far from an emphasis.

Pre-timeskip Dragon Ball is very good. Parts of it are a bit cliche, but then they are what many shounen cliche's are based off of so…also, a lot of characters which were made a joke post-timeskip are infinitely more interesting here.
