I just wanted to know if more of a story develops in later volumes, and if so, how is it? I've only read up to Vol. 4, and I like it, but not enough to understand all the hype, so someone please enlighten me. :)
Lone Wolf And Cub
-
-
I haven't read that much, but I think its pretty good.
-
Soshite Kozure Ōkami: Shikaku no Ko is the latest incarnation of the popular Lone Wolf and Cub manga, and it picks up when Shin Kozure Ōkami (New Lone Wolf and Cub) left off. Dark Horse comics has been publishing the original Lone Wolf and Cub manga with artist Goseki Kojima in North America, and it announced at New York Comic Con 2006 that it licensed the New Lone Wolf and Cub manga run. Media Blasters licensed a Japanese live-action television series based on the original manga. Previously, Amingo licensed a Japanese 1972 live-action film version and its five sequels. A Hollywood film adaptation of the manga was planned, but director Darren Aronofsky , The Wrestler) told Mtv's's Splash Page in January that the project is not longer in active development, despite his continuing interest.

I just read a little bit past the point where that Abe no Kaii guy popped up and boy am I pleased.
So far, it seems like Koike knows what he's doing when it comes to writing comic books. I admit it's possible that things could go downhill later on but I doubt it.
Also, Retsudo is a great bad guy. I mean it.
-
If you're already at Abe No Kaii you've read pretty much 2/3 of the series, the rest is great. Good finale.
-
i've only read the first volume and indeed it's great.
-
Man, Itto killing that Budda guy was pretty damn harsh.
I saw nothing in the chapter featuring the Buddha guy that suggested he was remotely a bad person. Unlike various other kills by Itto.
-
Lone Wolf and Cub beat around the bush monumentally at first but the last ten or so volumes are sublime. It's even better than Vagabond.
-
DURRAHAHURRA KENSHIn ROCKS
-millions of people who have never even heard of LWAC
-
before LWAC i'd say Vagabond over Kenshin.
-
Kenshin is an incredibly mediocre pile of who cares, of course Vagabond is better then it.
-
arn't we being kinda harsh on kenshin though? were comparing it to seinen series that's like comparing apples to oranges.
-

Fine then I'll compare it to One Piece, Dragonball, or Hunter X Huner and other good shonens as opposed to obscenely overrated mediocrity.
-
I've never read Hunter X Hunter.
How is it good.
-
It's good in that way where you read it for years and it starts off sweet but keeps going downhill and every time you get excited about it the 'genius' author decides to shit into your open and eagerly awaiting mouth.
Read it, it's awesome. Don't expect much from it in future chapters, though.
-

now that's more like it
I've never read Hunter X Hunter.
How is it good.
It's great and it doesn't get crappy later on like poster above said.
-
If a person have read Lone Wolf and Cub and Vagabond, he can forget about any other samurai manga.
And lol at Kenshin.
Than again, who doesn't.
-
Well I guess this is the general LWAC topic now.
What with the apparent merger.
-
I like Rurouni Kenshin. And inb4 massive clusterfuck of hate.
I need to give this a try, that and continue Vagabond. And Alen, go read HXH now. It's pretty much on par, maybe greater, than OP.
-

Yes. Please do. At that point, you will see the error of your ways.
-
I honestly don't get Vagabond. Half the time, I feel like I'm missing something super important whenever Musashi looks at a rabbit or something. Definitely better than Kenshin though.
-
stands up against the fire -
Kenshin is fine as a goofy shonen manga, and it has some good moments and character interaction in there.
But countless other Samurai series do the same things sooo much better. And play it straight and research the period and have real character drama.
Its comparing seinin to shonen, but when one is so much better than the other and its in the same genre, it seems only fair. Even without the violence and nudity that are tokens of seinin, LW&C beats out Kenshin on pretty much every level.
Usagi Yojimbo is also very good, in spite of being an anthropormorphic rabbit who ocassionally travels with a rhino.
-
I'm not disagreeing with that. I'm disagreeing with Zephos saying Kenshin is terrible. It's like if a seinin pirate manga is started, being much more realistic that OP is, and then people saying the OP is terrible.
-

You have no idea what you're talking about. You can't compare two things if you haven't even seen one of them.
LW&C isn't better because its more realistic, or because it has boobs and blood.
Its better because of the characterization, research, drama, plot, prose, storytelling techniques, and quality of the art.
-
As I've said, I've yet to read LWAC.

As I've said.
@robbybedfart:

A seinin pirate series wouldn't instantly be better than OP just because it was more adult. It'd have to match up to all the other things that it does well. Storytelling, characters, backgrounds, worldbuilding, history, research, creativity, sense of fun, etc.
As it is, Kenshin isn't all that good even among its shonen peers. Kenshin's past is pretty much the most interesting thing about the series, and its ignored or waved away with a "I can't return to being that" almost entirely.
-

I never said Kenshin was terrible. I said it was mundane and run of the mill.
It is unremarkable in any way shape or form. And I'm really tired of this bullshit SHONEN/SEINEN thing. Seinen is only defined by it's level of mature content, not the quality of it.
Gantz is seinen, and it's a juvenile pile of vomit that could never even approach One Piece or even Kenshin's more resonant moments. It's just that Gantz has nudity, sexuality, gorey violence, and aims it's attitude at older teenagers.Vagabond and LWAC destroy Kenshin on every level. Their violence, tone, or sex has little to do with anything.
In fact in tone they're very different then eachother let alone Kenshin (Vagabond is much more whimsical and easygoing compared to the dead serious drama of Wolf).Come on man, this is a One Piece forum. Do you disrespect it enough to think it belongs to an innately poorer demgraphic of comics?
And realism, realism has nothing to do with it.
Kenshin's problem with realism isn't that it's too real or not very real, it is in regards to how poorly balanced it's sense of realism is. It will carefully depict things like Okubo Toshimichi and his assassination, then turn around and have wacky X Men inspired fodder villains the size of houses who spit fire. It can be done, but he doesn't do it. -
Where can I download this manga? Am reading it online.
EDIT: Thanks Silvers.
-
I don't know. I bought all of it myself.
-
I have this manga for years now in my hard drive. I only read the first volume. For I don't know what reason I didn't read the rest. hmmmm I'll have to oblige myself to read it.
edit: What do you guys think of samurai executioner, is it good too? I have this one too in my collection, and I also only read the first volume.
-

Theres some interesting short stories in there, and a couple neat characters, but it lacks the narrative, goal and movement of LW&C. It's not bad by any means. Its just not as good. If I'd read it first I probably would have liked it more.
Mostly its interesting because you see the total likeable badass Asaemon for 10 volumes, and he gets killed in one early chapter of LW&C. Gives a fuller appreciation for Ogami Itto's skill, and the fact that he didn't kill just bad men.
The subplot with Kasajiro and Shinko the Kappa is pretty good though.
-
The best LW&C chapter is easily Thirteen Strings from Vol.11

Yeah out of all the chapters I've read it was my favorite.
Edit: Oh yeah. Kenshin was just okay. I don't think it was complete garbage or anything but I don't think it's really exceptional or all that good as far as comic books go.

Thanks Robby, so i'll start with samurai executioner.
-
Well I finished this series.
That JERK DISEASE person was right. The ending was fantastic.
-
I finished this series. pfiew It was one hell of a ride. This is a cult manga. Even Vagabond can't top this.
I can't come up with enough superlatives to describe this manga. I am sure this one was the spark for all samurai/Japanese culture amazement worldwide.
-
Where do you read it at?
-
^I think I got them from gotlurk.net
It was a looooong time ago so I don't know if they still have them. -
Good comic.
My namesake was a good bad guy.
-
Grandson of my heart! says everything about him.
-
Just reread the finale.
Good stuff.
I'm looking into that sequel.
-
what sequel?
-
what sequel?
Information borrowed from another forum.
Kazuo Koike and Hideki Mori have been doing it in Japan; it had to be done with a new artist because Goseki Kojima is dead. The first new part was published as Shin Kozure Okami (New Lone Wolf and Cub) from 2007-2008 in Jin magazine, but that folded, so it started up again as Soshite Kozure Okami: Shikaku no Ko (More Lone Wolf and Cub: Eyes of the Child, more or less) in the Katana online magazine in 2009. Dark Horse announced in 2006 that it had the rights for Shin Kozure Okami; they may be waiting for it to finish before they reprint it.
Also, some pics.
-
Up till now I've just naturally heaped disdain on the forced sequal there. But that art actually looks pretty consistent in quality with the original story. Need to see some backgrounds though.
