It's also one of the few cases where I'd recommend watching the anime over the manga (until you've gotten to parts not covered in the anime at least) because it just has an amazing anime adaption and the manga is plagued by gaps and from what I've heard, poor scanlations for earlier chapters

The manga is fine. I'm currently reading chapter 342 and I read everything online. Please stop saying that to every potential new fan that shows up. There are only 11 chapters missing now, and I believe Kewl is working on them. They will probably be out before anyone who starts now catches up.

Yeah, I'm working on V42 and the first chapter of V43 when I have time. Often it seems like I barely ever have any extra time, though. I'm gonna try to do a couple back projects this week. Later, we're gonna redo the issue-scans with volume-scans and go back to some earlier volumes. I haven't really decided how far back to go. But it takes fucking forever to just do like one volume, so it might be wise not to try to tackle too much and just spend my free time doing other projects I've wanted to do.
It's true though. A couple volumes never got scanlated at all, and people just scanned Viz's versions. And quite a few are done by Rufi completelt unedited so they're way off from the correct meaning. More so the further you get back. Rufi kinda bit off more than he could chew, starting with something too difficult too early on. He's getting better but it still needs a lot of editing. I'm trying to help him learn this complicated stuff. But it takes a long time even for me.

About chapter 403, I'm starting to like this guy! However, his always smiling/shonen face is kind of annoying. Is his face stuck like that?

I've heard good things about this series, and I started the manga a while ago but didn't keep up unfortunately. I plan on going through this entire series but probably don't have the time to read both the manga and watch the anime. I heard that unlike many anime series this show is actually very good. Sticks to the story line, is humorous, and entertaining. Would it be okay for me to just watch the anime until the final episode then catch up on the manga? What are your thoughts. Thanks in advance

You should watch the anime first, the manga isn't completely scanned. The anime version is even better than the manga sometimes. It's really different from other anime adaptations. However the first episodes are boring and the show starts for real only after the first dozen of episodes.

I really hope Sorachi doesn't make it out to be something silly in the end.

It was obvious that it was a gag, Okita would never help Hijikata. But I noticed that Sorachi only mess the ends when it's an arc about Katsura. It always begin with a great story to turn out being very silly in the end…
However I don't think that Obi Wan will survive, or else the statu quo will definitively changes... -

It was obvious in the beginning, and that was okay. The problem is that near the end it looked like legitimate character development, which made Okita saying it was his plan all along unfunny and really dumb.
The Elizabeth arc was also pretty dumb with how "oh, that was only one Elizabeth there are more lolololol", but not to the extent of the above since the rest of the arc was pretty silly.
However I don't think that Obi Wan will survive, or else the statu quo will definitively changes…
I don't either, but the pace of this arc so far is really bugging me to the point that I'm starting to doubt even that.

It's mainly a comedy manga.
There're a few serious arcs (like the Benizakura arc), but they're in the minority.

That's disappointing to me at least. I know some people like comedy manga, I like comedy in my manga but not as a genre. I'll stick to Will Ferrel for my comedy needs

I'd say watch at least either up to the end up of Season 1 or up to the end of the Benizakura arc (Episode 61). If nothing else, I'd say watch it for the characters and how they interact with each other. Yes, it's mainly a comedy, but there's so much more that it has to offer and shouldn't be taken just at face value.
And yes, just like everyone here has probably said at one point in this thread, you definately stick with the anime until you have to transition your way into the manga. Luckily, chapters of the manga that take place after the anime ends are being scanlated by a really good group (forget their name at the moment) that are MILES above anyone who has wroked on the series before.

I have the same gripes about 410 as I did the rest of the arc. I like Kyubee and Kondou's friendship, though.
411 was fun.
