These are the same people that did what they did to Dragon Ball.

I just don't understand how they overlook stuff like Robin calling the crew by their job titles or Luffy's mystery line. If they translate the stuff, they should see those, they shouldn't need to know they're character traits.
It's not Funi's style to do a 100% pure translation. As far as I know, it never has been. They're happy with getting the general 'gist' of it. Without notes to tell them what is and isn't off-limits the script writer has nothing to say 'don't change this part'.
-
Regarding the poll that I just noticed, I'd prefer it if FUNi made a new english version of the song, as the original english song wasn't really that great. Though, it would be a bit ironic if they did that, as they would essentially be making an english dub of a japanese dub of an english song…

Actually, Dreaming of you, the song that Belive is based off, doesn't relate to the series in it's entiety. It's about something else, but what I know of is that it's NOT MADE for One Piece. Therefore, the reason why it's bad is because it's never been for One Piece at all. FUNimation can go ahead and make their own version, because the lyrics of english Belive will relate to the proper opening song and not Dreaming of you. Read the translated lyrics of Belive and compare them to Dreaming of you

….Forgot that. Hold on, let me fix that
-
The Lolita one sounds like Celine Dion.. Not that I have anything against her.. (but it doesn't fit.. at all)
Funi should just make their own version, based off of the Japanese track. With the Japanese lyrics.Of Course

if its the dub we are talking about then i can understand. if its the _subs…_well then, its highly unacceptable. the way people(characters) speak is part of their personality. i dont get why, if they are supposed to be "translating", they dont watch out for how character's deliver their lines and then accomodate that into the translation. character's lose part of their personality when they dont talk how they are supposed to.
but again, i dont know if you guys are just talking about the re-dub or subbing (because i know how dubs can differ from their original counterparts because of speech limitations and such~there isnt any speech limitations in subtitles)
anyways, one thing I hope about these DVDs is that the subs are totally in English… I just remember watching some Funimation DVD once and some of the words in the subs where left in their JP terms.. kinda like fansubs and I HATE that. I rather all the attacks, fruit names, etc are all in English. just looks stupid in JP when the rest of the subs are in English... (HELLO! WANT TO BE MY NAKAMA?!)... just sounds very unproffesional (and slightly weaboo :/).

I never said it was a good thing, but it's not how Funi does dubs. As you can see with Robin, Funi likes to tweak things. Sometimes they make it better, sometimes they don't.
Though I hate to keep bringing it up (but it's really the best example), Yu Yu Hakusho is a completely different show between the sub and dub. Dub Yusuke in particular has several personality quirks that aren't present in his original counterpart.
Sure, the basic gist is there. Tough guy with a big heart masked by a bigger attitude, but the way they go about expressing that is very different.
Good or bad, that's how Funi does things.
-
Sorry to be a bother, but does anyone have an official link regarding information about the uncut DVDs because my friend is asking me for direct proof of them?

Good or bad, that's how Funi does things.Mushishi begs to differ. The translation/adaptation for that is pretty much spot on except for a mistake or two in the entire series. It really depends on the property they're working on, and who they're trying to sell it to.
Funi's bending over backwards and kissing our asses on the One Piece dub, changing stuff because the fans aren't happy. They're pushing back against the Toei overlords for YOU! shakes fist
Yeah, that's all I got.

Agreed, Funi has been busting their asses to make sure that we're pleased with OP.
Hell, to pick up a failed series is usually a huge risk that rarely pays off. I'll definetly buy the DVDs, at least to show that I support them. Plus the fact that I buy almost every piece of OP merchandise that comes out.
-
Same here KoF, I'm planning to buy aleast a copy of the set.
-
Oh yeah. I'm buying one and I'm going to try and convince others to buy it as well.
-
@Vegard:
I know, but the song is called "Dreaming of you". LOLITA is the artist.
Lolita is also a fuckin' SEB artist in Italy. (Super Euro Beat) Of course it's obvious that SEB and the whole eurobeat genre is only popular to Japan. Hence why, I'm 99% sure that we will NOT get Lolita's Dreaming of You.
Has it been stated where FUNI is going to be starting the DVDs from. I've read two fuckin' different things on this forum. That they're going to start releasing from where 4Kids stopped, or that they're going to be starting from the beginning. So what's the dealio?
-
As has been confirmed for weeks the DVDs will begin from the first thirteen episodes of the series.
-
I am buying the set(or at least asking for it for my birthday)
-
I still find it ironic that Funi is calling it a "box set" when it's only 2 DVDs, which is common nowadays.
I guess it's so they can charge extra for it, but if you pre-order it on Amazon now, you can get it for around $35 USD, so that's a plus….
-
Well, it's thirteen episodes. Usually, that counts as a box set. Not to mention it'd still cost fifty what with the episode count.
-
@Yuugi's:

It might be more the episode count than anything. And most places are probably going to sell it for less.
-
Yeah, probably just like the DBZ sets.
-
Yeah, at the right time you can a whole season of DBZ at BestBuy for about $35.
Or just buy it online, really there quite a couple of places that usually sell anime for about 10-25% less than MSRP.

Yeah, I think Amazon is going for around $37 something. I'm probably going to get it at Best Buy because I might be able to pay for it using my parent's reward zone points in at least part.
-
My local Wal-Mart sells Season 1-3 (tho season 1 is gone now) of DBZ for $29.95. It's selling season 4 for $35. Season 4 will probably be $29.95 in a few months. Same with the Naruto sets. They were also selling the Bleach set which was 20 episodes (wow!) for $35, as well.
I expect if they get season 1 it'll be $35. They didn't get movie 8 in till around a month after it's release…and they only had it there for a week before seemingly removing it from their shelves.
I may just have to go to Best Buy for season 1 like I did movie 8. But god, every time I go there I get jealous as there's quite some other series I wanna buy there. Like the Eureka Seven boxsets. (Oddly, I was impressed immensely by that series...but I like it...but at the same time I'm over it...hm.)

Yeah, I know what you mean. Last time I went in Best Buy intending to buy Movie 8 and ended up picking up the Outlaw Star complete series boxset (the whole thing was only $40, good deal) instead.
I dont even like Outlaw Star as much as One Piece, but I couldnt help it…
-
Best Buy was selling some of the FMA dvds for 5.99 - sadly not all of them but I picked up the ones they were selling. . . then had to return one because I already had it.
But yeah, Best Buy can have some really good deals.
-
There's a place that sells the DVDs for like 28 bucks. I'm not sure if I can say the same if the shipping adds up, but buying in bulk on the site could be worth it if I have the money.
-
going off-topic, I really would like the dvds to feature 5.1 japanese audio, and not only the english one, what about you guys? O.o
-
Depends on what TOEI gives them.
-

It would be nice, but seeing how not even Movie 8, which WAS 5.1 in japan got it, there's no way they'll get that for the TV-series, being that the japanese version was never in surround to begin with. The dub will propably have a surround-track, but that's it.
-
Just a few things I wanted to say, but couldn't cause of the joke ban.
1. The DVD art is quite nice. It does seem to be original art. The only Grand Battle game art I've seen similar to that is Usopp. Usopp seems to be a carbon copy of one of his…just in the art Usopp has his knee up, but he doesn't in the DVD cover. I like the cover, definitely better than the last.
2. There was no need, whatsoever, to post the cover art in all the FUNi topics starting several discussions in different topics about it. It was a DVD cover, so it belongs here, in the DVD thread.
3. People are saying it's thick from the image, this is not 100% proof. You may not be familiar, but a lot of DVD and Game cover art released in that style has a thick side in the image, but the final product is normal DVD size.
That's my opinions at least, not trying to push things as facts. We could get a nice big goodie in it to warrant the thickness!
-
@Dixxy:
Yeah, I think Amazon is going for around $37 something.
After about a month or two, Amazon drops the prices down to $25 per DBZ set.
If anything, the pricing would be similar to Dragon Ball's pricing. $35 for each 2-disc set. DBZ's season sets have a suggested retail price of $49.99, especially from FUNi's store.

copies post from funimation FAQ
i bought the 24 fucking dollar movie 8 dvd today. It wasnt even that good…except for Luffys, Ussop/Chopper and Sanji's fight. Zoro's and everyone elses was too fast. My sister was getting pissed cause vivi cried every 2 mins about something, i am SO happy she didnt join the crew

I can't wait for the English "We are!" and "Memories." When do we get English "Believe" again?
-

We'll hear the English version of Believe in the fourth box set. It'll probably be released around November.

didn't "We are" only last 13 episodes?
-
didn't "We are" only last 13 episodes?
Uh…no? :wassat:
It lasted quite a while before "Believe" kicked in. 47 episodes, to be precise.
-
didn't "We are" only last 13 episodes?
I thought it was the whole East Blue Saga, althought I could be wrong.
-
didn't "We are" only last 13 episodes?
Nope, We Are was used as the opening all the way up to Louge Town (episode 48).
Then came the almost 70 episode long Believe.

Umm, these sales include preorders and both the Movie AND the first boxset are listed as eligible for the sale.
Even though I have a copy preordered at Amazon, I think I'll preorder one here too. Both for my little brother who will want one as well as to see which order gets to me faster.
-
I do believe the RightStuf orders of Movie Eight came in pretty quickly, did not they?
-
I still say I'm gonna wait for Wal-Mart. They'll probably be selling it for $30-$35. I'd only pre-order it if pre-orderers got a special gift.
-
My Movie 8 did come in a few days before it hit stores.
How I do love to gloat …
-
I'll just get it when the FYE across the street from where I work gets it in.
I never feel the need to preorder things, unless I get something extra (like OoT: Master Quest with The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker). I believe that's the only thing I've ever preordered in my life.
-
Man, I already pre-order the boxset from rightstuf, I wonder if they'll let me edit it?
-
You should be able to cancel the pre-order and pre-order it again.
-

True, but I'd rather not if I can help it. On the subject of Rightstuf, how fast are their shipping to the UK?
